Purchase a copy of Baptistland: https://amzn.to/3R6MzP2About the Book:It began with just wanting to tell the truth. But truth-telling has a way of snowballing. When Christa Brown first spoke out about the sexual abuse she endured in her Texas childhood church, she never imagined it would expose the ethical chasm at the core of the Southern Baptist Convention: male religious leaders so focused on institutional protection that they sacrifice the safety of children.A book about speaking out and speaking up, Baptistland weaves together Christa's revealing story of hope amid Southern patriarchy and religious fundamentalism. You'll meet the young Christa who endures family dysfunction, the trauma of bodily desecration, and the death blows of a gaslighting church and faith community. Then you'll meet the Christa transformed who finds her voice and rises above the limited expectations of her given culture, becoming a successful attorney and earning the title of advocate for clergy sex abuse survivors.Ultimately, Christa Brown grows into a vivid tree of life, rooted in love, individuality, beauty, and goodness. But it was unrelenting honesty, to herself and others, that guided her to this ordinary paradise. Baptistland speaks to the power of truth-telling—to ourselves, our relationships, and our institutions.✖️✖️✖️Support the Show: Patreon.com/PreacherBoys✖️✖️✖️If you or someone you know has experienced abuse, visit courage365.org/need-help✖️✖️✖️CONNECT WITH THE SHOW:preacherboyspodcast.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@PreacherBoyshttps://www.facebook.com/preacherboysdoc/https://twitter.com/preacherboysdochttps://www.instagram.com/preacherboysdoc/https://www.tiktok.com/@preacherboyspodTo connect with a community that shares the Preacher Boys Podcast's mission to expose abuse in the IFB, join the OFFICIAL Preacher Boys Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1403898676438188/*as an amazon associate I may receive a small commission on purchases made through links in these show notesSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/preacher-boys-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Today's episode touches on some highly sensitive but really important topics--domestic abuse, relapse, and death to name a few. It is a story that must be told so the shame and stigma of violence and addiction loses its power over us individually and as a collective. Part one of Amy's story describes how it all began---the addiction, the rock bottom, and the journey into early sobriety. Stay tuned for Part two, where we discover what was behind the curtain of her tumultuous marriage and how she has survived abuse, loss and single parenting. More About my:Amy Davis is a sober single mother and interior designer. After spending her twenties and early thirties partying, she realized she would never live up to her full potential nor have her “happily ever after” if she kept on the same path. And on the outside it looked like she found it. But behind closed doors it quickly became a marriage fueled by domestic violence, drug and alcohol addition, financial secrecy, pathological behavior, and extreme familial enablement. After fleeing her marriage with their three year old daughter during covid, she navigated the often unfair and very expensive world of family law using every dollar she had with the support of her family and friends to secure full custody, never giving up hope he would find sobriety and peace. But one month after her divorce was finalized, her ex-husband died from a drug overdose exposing widespread financial deception and enablement, leaving her and her daughter drowning in devastating grief, loss, and confusion. Catapulted back into the legal worlds of family law and estate and probate law, the past 15 months have been very dark, but time and healing, have allowed light to pierce that darkness giving way to moments of joy and excitement for the unknown inspite of difficulties. She is learning that speaking up about her experience is taking away her story's power over her while also helping others. Amy is passionate about de-stigmatizing the taboo topic of domestic violence which often victim-blames and bringing awareness to how dangerous, and sometimes deadly, enablement is when it comes to both domestic and substance abuse. She is also learning that “Happily Ever After” has nothing to do with what is on the outside, but everything to do with one's own character, honor, morality, ethics, self-love, self-respect, and self-forgiveness. Even if you feel ashamed or embarrassed, a trusted friend will understand and realize the abusive behavior of your spouse is not your fault. 2. Find a mentor or counselor who is trauma informed. Someone who will know what you are going through. Ask your friend to help with this step. If you are a Christian, find a trauma informed faith-based coach or counselor. 3. Be honest with yourself, don't excuse the abuse, and don't accept the blame for his behavior. Pray and ask God for guidance and courage. Emotional abuse comes in many forms: withholding affection, withholding sex, withholding money, and the particularly torturous one – gaslighting. That's when your partner tries to convince you that what you're feeling, thinking and seeing, and that you know to be true, well isn't. You're told you're too sensitive and all your suspicions are just a figment of your imagination. With no money, no family and no support, my guest survived this and more emotional abuse. Margot is so confident in what she's accomplished that she's asked me not to disguise her voice or change her name. This is one badass woman.

Naghmeh has one of the most incredible stories I've ever heard. Raised in a Muslim family, converted to Christ through her brother's dream at age 9, helped start a massive house church movement in Iran where she faced tremendous persecution, which eventually landed her husband in prison. She then found herself on a national stage fighting to get her husband out of prison—talking to major news outlets (CNN, Fox, etc.) and to presidents Obama and Trump. She then had to face some hard truths about her abusive husband, and when she spoke out against abuse, she faced a backlash from some high-profile American church leaders. Naghmeh currently lives in Boise, ID and speaks out against the abuse of women in the church and continues to serve the house church movement in Iran. Even though that culture devalues women, the church in Iran is growing rapidly through the leadership of women, of which Naghmeh is a part. Naghmeh has written about her story in a forthoming book: I Didn't Survive: Emerging Whole After Deception, Persecution, and Hidden Abuse. You can learn more about Naghmeh from her website: https://www.tahriralnisa.org/about/naghmeh-panahi/
TRIGGER WARNING** Today Jeannine interviews Mary Beth O'Connor, retired federal judge, author and recovering addict. Mary Beth's book "From Junkie to Judge: One Woman's Triumph over Trauma and Addiction" chronicles the extreme abuse of her childhood, early drug use and ultimately is a guide book for anyone looking to find a recovery that is not centered around a Higher Power concept. About Mary Beth: For Mary Beth, childhood abuse and other traumas led to substance use disorder (addiction). Beginning with alcohol at age 12, she spent several years abusing various drugs. She found methamphetamine at 16 and started shooting up at 17. Mary Beth struggled with meth until she was 32 years old. By incorporating ideas from multiple sources to build a secular (not 12-step or faith based) recovery plan that works for her, Mary Beth has been sober since 1994. She used similar techniques to address the trauma and related anxiety as well. Mary Beth is a board member for LifeRing Secular Recovery and She Recovers Foundation. She speaks on behalf of these organizations, about multiple paths to recovery, and about all topics related to substance use disorder and recovery. She also speaks about sexual abuse and rape, child abuse, domestic violence, ptsd, anxiety, and recovering from these as well. Professionally, 6 years into recovery, Mary Beth attended Berkeley Law. She worked at a large firm in Silicon Valley, then litigated class actions for the federal government. In 2014, Mary Beth was appointed a federal Administrative Law Judge, a position from which she retired in 2020. **depiction of sexual assault and physical and emotional childhood abuse throughout episode Mary Beth website Chasing Heroine IG Jeannine IG
