Send us a textIt is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.  Domestic violence affects people across all demographics, and the workplace is no exception, as we uncover how leaders can recognize and address signs of abuse among their employees. We navigate the intricate dynamics of domestic violence, focusing on the subtle signs that may manifest in the workplace. Changes in employee behavior, communication, or performance can often be indicators that something is wrong.  The discussion is framed around the ACTS framework—ask, confidentiality, trust, and support—to create a compassionate and supportive work environment.  Let this episode serve as a call to action for leaders to foster safer workplaces and contribute to a more understanding world.Additional Resources in relation to this episode:National Domestic Violence Hotline:https://www.thehotline.org/1.800.799.SAFE (7233)There is a Chat feature on-line. Abuse is a lot more common than a lot of us would admit. It's not just physical. It's more than that and it cuts through to someone's core. And while it may not be directly related to menopause, some of us may be in abusive relationships. Understanding more about how to handle, get out of and heal from an abusive relationship is so important. Nobody deserves to be abused physically, verbally or emotionally. In this episode of The Best of The Menopause Movement Podcast, I'm with Miki Sturges where we talk about the cycle of shame, angel syndrome PLUS: The cycle of abuse How we live in a patriarchy and how that affects abuse Breaking the cycle Miki is a life coach and an expert in the field of resilience and survival from domestic abuse. She established a company called the Rise Up, Women Movement, where she aims to empower, encourage, and inspire women in conquering challenges from abuse. One out of every four women in the United States experiences domestic violence in their lifetime. The most crucial step in getting away from this trauma is contacting a domestic abuse hotline. If you need immediate assistance for domestic abuse, call 911, or you may call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233). They will provide help by assisting with crisis intervention and initial safety planning. There is also a hotline for teen victims of domestic violence, called Love Is Respect, which you can call at 1-866-331-9474.   What's Discussed in This Episode: (02:11) Miki talks about her journey and how she became a life coach. (08:16) Leaning into your fear. (09:13) Miki shares about her healing from an abusive marriage. "I put up the facade, I was very confident at my job, but when I went home, I was this little person, worth nothing." (14:06) The cycle of abuse. (20:02) How the fear of leaving affects women in an abusive marriage and why it's not easy to leave. (21:41) Transforming beliefs. (25:50) Emotional and verbal abuse cuts through your core. (26:55) The cycle of shame. (29:36) Learning to get through your subconscious. (34:10) Miki shares how the need to protect her son was the biggest jump in finding the courage to leave her abusive husband.  (36:55) We live in a patriarchal society, and that plays a significant role in perpetuating abuse. (40:17) The importance of having support in escaping and recovering from abuse. (47:55) You are not responsible for anyone else's feelings. (49:00) What is angel syndrome? (52:15) Approaching a relationship in a healthy marriage. (56:47) Freeing and forgiving yourself from thoughts of the past. (1:03:48) The Rise Up, Women Movement.   About the Guest: Miki Sturges is a bilingual (Japanese-English) Women's Empowerment coach, Abuse Recovery Ministry Leader,  Master-certified in Neuro-Coaching,  certified in Christian coaching, and Splankna Trauma Release Practitioner in training.  She helps women let go of past hurt, overcome long-standing insecurities, and get back lost confidence so that they feel empowered, capable, and worthy to step into their God-given greatness and the person they are created to be. Unlike conventional therapy or counseling, she uses her unique "G.R.A.C.E" methodology, combined with a neuroscience-based technique to reveal what's programmed at the subconscious level, along with God's guidance and wisdom.   Resources: Check my latest podcast or listen to the previous ones (https://www.menopausemovement.com/podcast) Connect with me on Instagram (@drmichellegordon) Follow me on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/drmichellegordon) Check out my LinkedIn posts (https://www.linkedin.com/in/drmichellegordon/) Reach Miki on her Facebook page You can also listen to her podcast Visit her website   For more podcast episodes, you may also visit my website. Today I speak to Becky Bell Jenkins, a victim of Domestic Violence and a son who was murdered at the hands of her abuser.  Full disclosure, this may be a trigger for some so please make an informed decision before listening and if you or someone you know needs help, please call the National Domestic Hotline at 1-800-799-7233. I don't know where to begin, as a mom of two sons herself I found my heart breaking with hers and tears with her own.  Becky talks about the tragic shooting of her beloved son, Adam on that night of violence.  Its still sometimes a blur of how it happened but from that day she tells us how she was made out to be the shooter and how she NEVER got any help for advocates or anyone concerning her rights as a victim of DV.  Its been a year and she is still fighting for those rights.  From her family distancing themselves from her to virtually no support she gets through it one day at a time and she is thriving.  She has her bad days as you can  imagine but she gets back up and fights for Adams Voice.   She describes Adam as her world, her life, her protector, her SON.  Adam saved Becky that night.  Its an all too common story of Domestic Abuse.  Someone gets hurt or in this case killed.  Its an epidemic we need to eradicate and educate everyone on.   Becky's mission now is to help those in need, to be a voice to know there is hope and to fight!  Please listen in to the story and if you would like to reach out and be a source of support or need support if you have a similar circumstance, she will be there for you.  This woman is a fighter and I just love her and so blessed that she came on the show and was vulnerable to share her story.  Her second life is just beginning! Crushes and love are a HUGE part of the teen years. But are we talking with our daughters about what healthy romance looks like? Or are we leaving it to the movies and social media to teach them? Let's make sure we're talking about love with our girls. Help them define love Do they confuse it with lust, obsession, infatuation, idolization What are they attracted to and why? Teach them what a healthy relationship looks like Point out relationships in shows you watch or books you read  Signs of a Healthy Relationship (national domestic violence hotline)  Freedom to be yourself Mutual Respect Limited Jealousy Support Privacy Boundaries  Communication Teach them what an unhealthy relationship looks like Unhealthy relationships are based on power and control, not equality and respect. Signs of an unhealthy relationship possessiveness,  Insults jealous accusations Yelling Humiliation pulling hair, pushing or other abusive behaviors Remember that abuse is always a choice and you deserve to be respected. There is no excuse for abuse of any kind. Teach them about Consent Don't wait until they're in a relationship to talk about consent and what's healthy and what's not.  Basics of Consent mutual agreement between partners  needs to happen every time your relationship status does not make consent automatic consent is not a free pass there's no such thing as implied consent  it's not consent if you're afraid or unable to say no nonconsent means stop. if anyone involved isn't consenting, then what is happening is or could be rape, sexual assault or abuse.   Resources: Dr. Robyn Silverman, How To Talk to Kids About Healthy, Caring, Romantic Relationships, https://drrobynsilverman.com/how-to-talk-to-kids-about-healthy-caring-romantic-relationships-with-dr-richard-weissbourd-rerelease/ Planned Parenthood, What Should I Teach My High School-Aged Teen About Relationships, https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/parents/high-school/what-should-i-teach-my-high-school-aged-teen-about-relationships Sarah Aswell, The Complete Guide to Teaching Kids Consent at Every Age, https://www.healthline.com/health/parenting/consent-at-every-age Amy Joyce, The Washington Post, The Sex Talk Isn't Enough: How Parents Can Teach Teens About Healthy Relationships, https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/parenting/wp/2017/05/17/how-to-teach-teens-to-have-healthy-romantic-relationships/ Michelle Drew, Love vs Infatuation, https://psychcentral.com/lib/love-versus-infatuation/ National Domestic Violence Hotline, Teaching Teens About Healthy Relationships, https://www.thehotline.org/2013/02/28/teaching-teens-about-healthy-relationships/ Love Is Respect, Healthy Relationships, https://www.loveisrespect.org/healthy-relationships/ Love Is Respect, Understanding Teen Dating Violence and Sexual Assault, https://www.loveisrespect.org/understanding-teen-dating-violence-and-sexual-assault/

Many women are going through or have survived traumas like domestic violence, emotional manipulation, betrayal, and divorce. These traumas take a significant toll on a person's self-esteem and cause a lasting feeling of loneliness and unworthiness. This week, we're joined by Miki Sturges. Miki is a life coach and an expert in the field of resilience and survival from domestic abuse. She established a company called the Rise Up, Women Movement, where she aims to empower, encourage, and inspire women in conquering challenges from abuse. Today, she shares her story and more with us. Don't forget to subscribe to this podcast and make sure that you tune in to this episode to know more about the cycles of shame and abuse and the steps you need to take to break that cycle.    Here are the discussion points of this episode: (02:11) Miki talks about her journey and how she became a life coach. (08:16) Leaning into your fear. (09:13) Miki shares about her healing from an abusive marriage. There is also a hotline for teen victims of domestic violence, called Love Is Respect, which you can call at 1-866-331-9474 You can reach Miki on her Facebook page.
