I've known about David Wilcox since I first heard "East Asheville Hardware" back in the mid 90's working at a summer camp.  I was absolutely captivated and delighted at what I was listening to, and knew that this was something that I needed to pay more attention to, being a budding songwriter myself.  What followed was a few decades of wonder and inspiration at the levels of depth to which a songwriter can go when it comes to communicating an idea.  David is in a realm all to his own, and you get a good sense of this right off the bat in this episode. Please do yourself a favor and make some time in your day to explore davidwilcox.com for loads of music, events like workshops and retreats, his tour schedule, and even a way to find which song can cure that which ails ya. David is part of that sweet "Asheville Contingent" including David LaMotte, Barbie Angell, Chuck Brodsky, and Jamie & Ian Ridenhour, all of whom you can catch up on from previous episodes. I was really hopeful to speak with David at some point, and I was fortunate to catch him at a good time, just before a big week in Oregon (Sept 26 - Oct 1), when he will be teaching at the Americana Song Academy at Camp Sherman and performing at the Sisters Folk Festival.  Go if you can! I hope it'll be as soul-enriching for you as this chat was for me   Some of David's music featured in this episode include “The Soul of It”, “Tattered Old Kite”, “The Beautiful”, and the one I teased you with at the beginning of the episode, "The View from the Edge", which can be experienced here, in his official video. Relationships! Let's Talk About It with Pripo Teplitsky

David LaMotte is an award-winning musician, speaker, and author. I've known David and have been a huge fan of his music for about 20 years, watching his concerts in Asheville and Black Mountain many times over the years. But it was through his book, Worldchanging 101: Challenging the Myth of Powerlessness, that I got to know his work in peacebuilding. David is someone who has spent many years of his life cultivating peace, both within himself and in his community. In 2008, he suspended his career in music to accept a Rotary World Fellowship and study International Relations, Peace, and Conflict Resolution at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. He has spoken and facilitated conversations about race, privilege, and positive change, and his talk for TEDxAsheville discusses how music can teach us how to understand peace and conflict. He is the Co-Founder and President of PEG Partners, a non-profit for literacy, critical thought, and artistic expression in Guatemala, and was named “Madison World Changer” for his work in the country. Today, David is writing his next book, tentatively titled “Harmony: What Music Can Teach Us About Peacemaking in a Troubled Time.” David joins me today to dive deep into what peacemaking is. We discuss the importance of building inner peace so we can portray it outward in our homes and communities. We explain the etymology of pacifism and highlight why it's not just about being passive. We describe the role of hope in activism, the usefulness of vulnerability as a means of change, and the impact of creativity in interrupting hate and prejudice. We also underscore the power of names and words as well as contemplate the wisdom of the civil rights movement and activists such as John Lewis and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.   “The work of peacebuilding is about approaching conflict in constructive ways.” - David LaMotte   This week on Relationships! Let's Talk About It: Rethinking peacemaking and how David's first understanding of peace and harmony has evolved Why it's important to distinguish kindness from niceness How peace requires stepping towards conflict, not away from it Getting comfortable with the uncomfortable and how conflict leads to deeper understanding in a relationship How couples can work on conflict resolution The two facets of sensitivity and using sensitivity to move towards somebody Choosing vulnerability as a means of change and a look at the model of the civil rights movement Non-violence, its misconceptions, and why pacifism isn't about being passive The activism of love and our cultural narrative about what hope means The relationship between inner peace, outer peace, and activism Why the only way to know what integrity is to be out of it The name of peace and why I changed my name How David cultivates peace in his family An exercise in conflict mediation Creative interruption and the Coup Clutz Clown counter-rally David's principles for recognizing social privilege Accepting the possibility of human transformation   Related Content: The Secret to Love is Just Kindness   Resources Mentioned: Music Can Help Us Understand Peace and Conflict | David LaMotte on TEDxAsheville   Connect with David LaMotte: Let's Be Neighbors David LaMotte Website David LaMotte on LinkedIn David LaMotte on Facebook David LaMotte on Twitter Book: Worldchanging 101: Challenging the Myth of Powerlessness Book: White Flour Book: S. Ok. To be fair, Brian and I don't answer the question proposed in the title, but we make some headway. I thought I knew Brian pretty well, but I learned so much while we were talking. Did you know he taught Junior High? Well, ok, maybe you did. But did you know he holds a Masters in Special Ed in addition to his MDiv? Aha - got ya... you knew that too? I didn't. Well maybe y'all do know Brian better than I do. We didn't talk about hardly any of that. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. The song we heard in this episode from David Lamotte was called Hope. Find David's complete catalog and all the other peace, light and life giving stuff he is doing at http://www.davidlamotte.com I wanted to address something I said about 5 minutes into the discussion. I said "the George Floyd thing." Now, I edited out the extended period of silence and me stammering around trying to find the appropriate word(s) for the issues and actions surrounding the death of George Floyd and everything that has happened since. "Thing" is what I came up with and the conversation continued. As inarticulate and inadequate as labeling the incredible movement started by his death and subsequent events a "thing" is, I still struggle with what to call it. It is larger than his death - decades larger, centuries larger, everyday larger. Its more than Black Lives Matter, White Supremacy, white privilege, white guilt, white fragility. Its oppression, repression, violence, hatred, inequality, inequity, racism, Its a lot of, well, things. I am not trying to minimize the movement - just the opposite. I'm trying not to pigeon hole it or reduce it any way. Its too big and way too important for that. What do you call it? Anti-racism covers a lot. And I have a lot of work to do.

I first met David LaMotte at a weekend retreat in the WV mountains where he was performing.  He and his newly-wed wife Deanna were there, and it was fun hanging out with them both.  As it goes, though, with many traveling gigging musicians who bounce around the world bringing music and great joy to thousands, my memory of the moment was a little more vivid than his.  On the night of his performance, after most everyone had retired to their respective cabins, David and a handful of us hung out of the porch of the camp lodge with a few guitars and just made some music.  It was pretty grand. And this is David.  Behind the professional touring musician, he really is one who yearned and still years for close community, regardless of whether that community is filling a theater, a church, a concert hall, or a campfire.  He has spent his career trying to build and nourish that community, through 12 albums, three books, two trios, a massive move to Australia to study Peace and Conflict Resolution at the University of Brisbane, developing a non-profit organization dedicated to the enrichment and education of children in Guatemala, countless workshops, seminars, weekend retreats, & online gatherings, marching and speaking out in movements for peace and social justice, welcoming rich conversation and thoughts on navigating difficult times through his 25-episode Crowdcast "Sustaining our Spirits" series, and on and on and on. Finding the time to pick David's brain on everything I'd like is obviously a daunting if not unachievable task, at least in the time frame we generally have for these kinds of things.  I picked his brain on a few things, though, and I hope you enjoy the conversation we had.  I really did.  I also got a chance to chat with David's 11-year-old son Mason, about his passion of playing Celtic fiddle and the kind and supportive community he found in a weekly "Celtic Jam" in their town.  That was a fun talk too. You can find all things David at www.davidlamotte.com.  Also, something that might interest you is becoming a part of David's Patreon Community, which I can say from experience, really is true community, which isn't always easy to nourish and grow over a webcam. Lastly, Abraham Jam's "Braided Prayer" documentary will be arriving later in 2020, but in the meantime, here is the trailer to whet your appetite.  Find out everything you ever wanted to know about the dynamic trio and buy their music at www.abrahamjam.com. In this episode of Everyday Spirituality, we talk with singer, songwriter, author and peacemaker, David Lamotte. During this part of our conversation we talk about how the work of Worldchanging is done by movements of people, not individual heroes. Given the current state of the world, we are seeing this lived out first hand through the work of Black Lives Matter organizers across the country who are leading a movement of people inspired to act by the death of George Floyd. —— "There is a toxic narrative in our culture when it comes to changing the world—It takes someone heroic, to do something dramatic, in a moment of crisis. The advantage in that narrative for those of us to want to see change, is that If heroes fix things, and I’m not a hero, therefore it’s not my job; my job is to clap." David Lamotte "It’s important for us to remember that what makes the change is the small, undramatic, consistent effort over time. And there is good news there, which is that YOU are not powerless. We can show up and do the work." David is a songwriter, speaker and writer from Black Mountain, NC who just released his 12th album, “The Other Way Around”, and is also the co-founder and President of PEG Partners, a non-profit organization that supports Guatemalan schools. In this episode, I caught up with David about our strangely intertwining lives in the Presbyterian world, as well as his own journey into Quaker-dom. We also talk about his life as a touring musician, how to help kids develop critical thinking and artistic expression, and the main challenges of peacemaking.      Award-winning songwriter, speaker and writer, David LaMotte returns to cringe for a second time! David and I sit down in his home in Black Mountain, North Carolina, to talk about his first studio album in a decade, "The Other Way Around." We go track-by-track (more or less...we jump around a fair bit), and David shares behind-the-scenes stories behind every single song from this new record...and David even performs one of them live right here on the podcast.

Rev. Derek White, a.k.a. "The Geekpreacher", joins Grant and Peter once again! Derek joined us previously on Episode 38, "Christians on the Convention Scene", and he's back with us to discuss another weighty topic: Walter Wink's "myth of redemptive violence" and René Girard's concept of the "scapegoat" and collective violence. We also take a moment to remind everyone about our ongoing fundraiser for The Bodhana Group, and hear about Derek's growing role as a convention pastor. Lastly, David LaMotte was kind enough to give us permission to use his song "Peter" in this episode; it was particularly appropriate, especially since David's a Walter Wink fan too. If you enjoyed it, find more music at his website, and on iTunes, Spotify, and Google Play. Also referenced in this episode: The GenCon 2015 Worship Service (and specifically, Derek's "Here There Be Dragons" sermon); The GenCon 2015 "Faith and Gaming" panel; Walter Wink's "Facing the myth of redemptive violence"; René Girard's The Scapegoat; Dan Carlin's "Hardcore History" podcast; and Ursula K. le Guin's "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas". Scripture: Hosea 6:6, Jonah 3:10-4:2, Luke 22:47-52
