Beyond the Classroom: Laurel Ridge's Dental Hygienists Go Global

The Valley Today

Over 100 patients in four days, many of them experiencing a professional dental cleaning for the very first time. On this bonus Laurel Ridge Community College edition of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael connects via Zoom with a team live from Negril, Jamaica — Brandy Hawkins Boies (Director of Communications and Outreach at Laurel Ridge), longtime Rotarian Kathy Kantor, and three recent graduates of Laurel Ridge's dental hygiene program: Stacey Escobar, Dahye Seo, and Nataly Hernandez. The conversation traces how a casual hallway idea between a Rotarian and a college administrator a decade ago has become a fully-supported, equipment-rich mission program — built on Rotary global grants that converted a shipping container into a working dental clinic. The three graduates share what it's been like to put their fresh credentials to use in real-world conditions, the moments that made it click (one patient asked for a hug), and what's next for each of them. Plus: how community members can volunteer for free cleanings at the Laurel Ridge dental clinic in Middletown, and how churches and groups can join Rotary's ongoing trips to Jamaica. WHO'S ON THIS EPISODE • Brandy Hawkins Boies — Director of Communications and Outreach, Laurel Ridge Community College • Kathy Kantor — Rotarian (Strasburg Rotary Club); co-architect of the Rotary global grants funding the Jamaica dental clinic • Stacey Escobar — Recent graduate, Laurel Ridge Dental Hygiene Program (16 years in the dental field; heading back to practice in Burke, VA) • Dahye Seo — Recent graduate, Laurel Ridge Dental Hygiene Program (joining practices in Fairfax and Loudoun counties) • Nataly Hernandez — Recent graduate, Laurel Ridge Dental Hygiene Program (returning to Jamaica for a second mission trip in just a month) ABOUT THE PROGRAM The Laurel Ridge Community College Dental Hygiene Program admits 18 students every two years — a competitive cohort with a rigorous workload. Since 2018, graduates have had the option to participate in a post-graduation mission trip to Negril, Jamaica, working at a dental clinic established and equipped through Rotary International global grants involving Woodstock, Front Royal, Warren County, Winchester, and Strasburg Rotary Clubs, in partnership with the Negril Rotary Club. The Jamaican clinic is also open to other visiting dental teams and groups year-round. HOW TO GET INVOLVED • Volunteer as a patient — free cleanings at the Laurel Ridge dental clinic in Middletown help students complete their lab hours. Get on the waiting list for the next class (starting August 2026). • Support future mission trips — donations help cover flights, lodging, and supplies for graduating students. • Join a trip — Kathy and Byron (Brill) host teams in Jamaica three times a year. Churches and community groups are welcome. LINKS & RESOURCES • Laurel Ridge Dental Hygiene Program: laurelridge.edu/dental • Strasburg Rotary Club Facebook page  ALSO MENTIONED • Drone Show at Jim Barnett Park — Saturday • free admission • approximately 250 drones • details on Winchester City Parks' Facebook page THE VALLEY TODAY with Janet Michael — A decade of conversations. WESLACO, Texas - The city of Rio Bravo in Tamaulipas has more than 250 illegal dumping sites, says an environmentalist with Rotary International.Dr. Bricia ElAwar, chairwoman of the environmental committee for Rotary District 5330 in Riverside, California, has led efforts to clear the dumps. She first visited the city 18 months ago and returned this past weekend with over 100 volunteers to help Mayor Miguel Ángel Almaraz Maldonado with his clean-up efforts.“Mayor Almaraz has been doing amazing things. He has already cleaned up over 100 illegal dumps."“The beautiful thing is he is working in the middle of a very dangerous city and he's doing amazing things. He can be example to mayors around the world, in terms of a government dealing with environmental challenges.”On her first visit to Rio Bravo, ElAwar and her team cleaned up a lagoon so that butterflies, birds, fish could return. But, once the Rotary members left more trash was dumped there. “I asked to the Rotarians to set up a meeting with the mayor. He said he would give us 15 minutes of his time but we stayed for one and a half hours. The mayor brought in eight new trucks to collect the trash.”ElAwar continued: “These lagoons can be beautiful for ecologic biodiversity. It is a great habitat for birds and the Monarch butterfly. If we protect our natural resources, I think mankind can have hope. Right now, I feel like Rotarians believe in what we're doing, and I think some governments are starting to have conscience about protecting their own communities too.”ElAwar said that for Rotarians, working on environmental issues goes “hand-in-hand” with efforts to secure world peace, having a humane migration policy, and fighting disease. “Everything is connected and working with the government is key,” she said.Asked how her environmental group came about, ElAwar said: “During the pandemic, COVID 19, I had many sleepless nights. I kept thinking of my family in Mexico that I could not see. I decided to take action. I had previously been in so many countries, helping so many people around the world. I thought, why not help Mexico?“I wanted to connect with people who are passionate about the river, people who care about their families, and I wanted to have a heart to heart conversation with governments in many (border) cities.”Go to www.riograndeguardian.com to read the latest border news stories and watch the latest news videos.

Partir un an à l'étranger ou accueillir un étudiant : comment faire et quelle formule privilégier ?

Y'a de l'idée

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 31, 2026 3:38

The UN has been vital in preventing World War 3, providing humanitarian assistance to hundreds of millions of refugees, developing partnerships with groups such as Rotary International to eliminate the scourge of polio, and sending peacekeeping troops into dangerous areas to restore stability. Other basic UN services are to develop international agreements to safely move aircraft, ships, telecommunications, mail and weather information worldwide. The Trump administration has drastically cut US donations to the world body, which is damaging the US and the world. The US benefits more from the UN than probably any other country.

Take a moment to let this settle in your heart. Some women reach great heights yet quietly wonder, "Is this all there is?" Others dwell in the shadows of shame, unable to untangle their worth from their wounds, not realizing that shame steals joy. There are also women who pour themselves into endless responsibilities, forgetting to show themselves the kindness they offer others. Their voices whisper, "I'm tired," and sometimes cry out, "I'm tired of being tired!" The Frankly Speaking table becomes a sanctuary, a place where women leap bravely into vulnerability and discover restoration, renewal, resilience, and joy waiting on the other side. Iyanla Vanzant, life coach and best-selling author, reminds us, and I quote, “the greatest service we can offer is to stand confidently in both our worthiness and our power. We have gifts. We have the gift of intellect. We can think ourselves in and out of any situation we are confronted with. We have the ability to speak for ourselves. We can defend ourselves. Promote ourselves. Encourage ourselves, teach ourselves. Correct ourselves. We have a heart. Through it, we experience love, grief, compassion, empathy, joy, peace, and an entire realm of emotions that let us know we are alive. As long as we draw breath, we hold the power to create, dismantle, and rebuild, whether shaping a child's toy or the spirit of a city. We are life-givers. Through this gift, we spread compassion, express love, delight in giving, and watch life bloom before us. That is real power. We are powerful. When we claim that power, we become the change itself, understanding that impossible is only a word for what is difficult, not what is unachievable. In leadership, we continue to strive to erase and confront limiting metaphors like the one born in 1978 called the glass ceiling. My guest storyteller this week claims, owns, and shares her power with a servant heart. In doing so, she is a unique example of women in leadership with the capacity to guide, influence, and inspire others toward achieving common goals and objectives. She provides direction, fosters commitment, and creates a positive environment where and when she leads. She is Ravi Cooper, Rotary International's 7610 District Governor 2025-2026, President and CEO of the United Way of greatest Charlottesville Virginia, and recently named Charlottesville's Regional Chamber of Commerce, Business Leader of the Year, and so much more. She definitely lives in a place where leadership, service, and sustainability MEET. Take a listen and learn.

"The Invitation" is the story of the man and the little boy inside him wrestling with a past they both know so well, and of stepping into a future that is still being determined.Taulbert is a trustee of the University of Tulsa, has been recognized international by the Sales and Marketing Academy of Achievement, the Library of Congress, the NAACP, Rotary International as a Paul Harris Fellow and has been a recipient of the Jewish Humanitarian of the Year Award and the Richard Wright Literary Award. At a time when true heroes can seem scarce, Voices Against Trafficking brings together extraordinary accounts from ordinary people who refused to look away in the face of injustice. These first-hand narratives spotlight individuals who saw something, said something, and took action—changing the course of lives forever. The stories remind us that the courage of a single person can create ripples of hope that reach across communities and even nations. Andi Buerger, a survivor of brutal child sex trafficking, shares her journey from victim to internationally recognized advocate who has rescued hundreds of at-risk teens through her nonprofit work. Lisa Babbage brings her expertise as an educator, nonprofit leader, and survivor of abuse, working to restore dignity to women and children. Chris Meek, co-founder of SoldierStrong, combines lessons on leadership, resilience, and humanitarian service from decades of working with U.S. veterans and global causes. Eric Caron, a decorated former U.S. Special Agent, offers a law enforcement and national security perspective on dismantling trafficking networks and rescuing victims. Together, they discuss the harsh realities of human trafficking, the systemic challenges in combating it, and the urgent need to unite voices from all walks of life in this fight. This compelling conversation will challenge listeners to confront the uncomfortable truth about modern-day slavery—and inspire them to believe that courage truly is contagious. Guests Andi Burger: Andi Buerger, JD is an international speaker, author, and advocate for victims of human trafficking & exploitation.  Andi herself was a victim of child sex trafficking and unspeakable abuses by family members for 17 years. She founded Beulah's Place, which provided temporary shelter services to at-risk unsheltered teens for 14 years.  300+ youth were successfully rescued and assisted earning national recognition. Andi later founded Voices Against Trafficking(VAT) to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves — the voiceless victims of human trafficking and exploitation. VAT advocates for the protection of every human's rights regardless of race, gender, culture, or socio-economic status.  Voices Against Trafficking-The Strength of Many Voices Speaking As One, gives a portion of proceeds from each sale to survivors of child abuse and trafficking, as does Andi's first book,  A Fragile Thread of Hope - One Survivor's Quest to Rescue. Andi launched Voices Of Courage magazine in 2023.  It is distributed internationally and accepted into the U.S. Library of Congress. It honors everyday heroes who selflessly fight to protect human rights. These champions come from all walks of life to change communities and the world for the better. A television series by the same title debuts in 2025. Chris Meek: Dr. Chris Meek is co-founder, chairman, and CEO of SoldierStrong, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that focuses on helping America's servicemen, women, and veterans take their next steps forward. This passion emerged from her own need, recovering from childhood sexual abuse and homelessness. Since working through her personal trauma, Lisa went on to receive a doctorate in Public Policy and Nonprofit Leadership and is recently received her second Masters, this time in STEM Education. After twenty years of educating Georgia's children as a K-12 educator and TEACH Gwinnett Supervisor, and over ten years in the mission field of Atlanta, Lisa says her work has only just begun. Steve Schlesinger authored "Act of Creation: Founding of the United Nations. “ The UN mandate expanded since it was formed on June 26, 1945 to achieve three basic goals: eliminate scourge of war, promote economic and social development and enhance human rights. The US was the most important player at the UN; however, it is considerably weakened since the Trump administration withdrew from the UNHRC and WHO, and applied counterproductive policies that make China stronger. The UN covers the world  in working with Rotary to defeat polio, helping companies move ships, aircraft, mail and weather information worldwide, providing assistance to refugees and combatting climate crisis and dozens more. Polls show most Americans support the UN. Now, the US is the laughingstock of the world for its counterproductive policies at the UN and surrendering its leadership.  Generally speaking, most of the us Media have been incompetent in coverage of the UN.

DALTON BIOGRAPHY Lacy J. Dalton (born Jill Lynne Byrem on October 13, 1946 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania), is an American country singer and songwriter with a career that has spanned many decades and touched the hearts of millions of music fans. In March 2017 Lacy J Dalton was inducted into the North American Country Music Association International Hall of Fame, and in 2022 she was awarded a Lifetime Career Achievement Award from the Josie Music Awards, the largest independent music awards show in the country.   She's one of the most instantly recognizable voices in music – the woman People Magazine called “Country's Bonnie Raitt.” From the first time Lacy J Dalton caught the public's ear, that soulful delivery, full of texture and grit, has been a mainstay of Country Music. When you sit to listen to a Lacy J Dalton album, you find yourself pulled in by the very power and heart of this vocalist, because she's not merely performing a ten-song set, she's bringing each and every tune to life. It's as if they were all written especially for her.   Prior to recording with Harbor Records in 1978 as Jill Croston, she like many before her, held many jobs to survive and support her family. As a truck stop waitress and singer, she would wait tables and then take the stage to sing a few songs. In June 1979, Lacy J Dalton was signed by Columbia Records and quickly rose to national prominence with Crazy Blue Eyes, which she wrote with her longest friend, Mary McFadden, and which raced to #7 on the Billboard Country Charts.  Her hard work and dedication paid off in 1979 when she was awarded the Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist of the Year.   Lacy's success was powered not just by the artist's recordings, but by a stage show that truly electrified audiences. She quickly became one of the few women who could successfully open a show for the likes of Hank Williams, Jr., Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard or Charlie Daniels. Not only could she do it, but she left audiences across the country hollering for more. Her signature song 16th Avenue, became the Anthem for Nashville songwriters.  Her other hit records are legendary million-airplay cuts and include Crazy Blue Eyes, Takin' It Easy, Everybody Makes Mistakes, Hillbilly Girl with the Blues, Hard Times, and the worldwide hit Black Coffee.   In addition to her Top New Female Vocalist award, she also brought home numerous Grammy nominations and 3 prestigious, back to back (1979, 1980, 1981) Bay Area Music Awards for Best Country-Folk Recordings. Lacy appeared on those shows with the likes of Neil Young, The Grateful Dead, Grace Slick and the Jefferson Airplane.   Lacy's collaboration with Willie Nelson on his platinum Half Nelson CD was a high spot for her. Lacy is the only woman featured on that recording (which included singing legends Ray Charles, Neil Diamond, Merle Haggard, Julio Iglesias, George Jones, Leon Russell, Carlos Santana, Mel Tillis, Hank Williams Sr., and Neil Young), and was awarded a Platinum Record for it. She also received a Gold Record from Hank Williams Jr. in 1985 for her support performances throughout his Five-0 Tour, where she opened for him at a time when it was unusual for a woman to do so. Her career includes accomplishments in music, film and radio.  In music, they range from her instantly recognizable charted hit songs to her notable duets recorded with George Jones, Willie Nelson, Bobby Bare, Glen Campbell, Eddie Rabbit, David Allen Coe and many others. Her film debut was in the motion picture Take This Job And Shove It, and her acting has also included live stage and theater performances. Until recently, Lacy J Dalton also hosted a weekly radio show called Mustang Matters.  Podcasts of past shows are available to listeners on the internet at www.americamatters.us   Following a successful career in country music, Lacy decided to draw on all her musical experiences including country, rock and folk, and cross over into the Americana genre.  This blend of musical styles allows her to express herself in a way that demonstrates all the facets of who she is as a singer/songwriter.  She became an independent artist and formed her own label called Song Dog Records.  Under this label, she has released three albums to date.  The first was Wild Horse Crossing in 1999, followed by the Last Wild Place Anthology which went #1 on the World Independent Chart, and a year later went #1 on the American Western Music Chart. Then Allison Eastwood, Clint Eastwood's daughter, used the hit song Slip Away from the Anthology CD on the sound track of her independent film, Don't Tell. In 2010 Lacy also released a tribute to Hank Williams Sr. entitled Here's To Hank.   Today, Lacy continues to record new music and perform live shows whenever possible.  She tours mainly west of the Mississippi and loves small boutique venues and old theaters with great sound quality and warm, receptive audiences she can really connect with.  She recently recorded some electrifying new music for an EP that was released in January 2019.  When hearing the signature song Scarecrow, her good friend Reverend Barbara Ann Fletcher remarked “that song makes you a whole new you, and it makes me a whole new me.”  And that's exactly the response Lacy was hoping for.  In 2024 Lacy released an album titled For The Black Sheep, a collection of songs with meaningful lyrics and messages of unity and acceptance for all of us.   In addition to her musical career, Lacy has been involved in various service projects through several charitable organizations – namely, the Let ‘em Run Foundation, William James Associates Arts in Corrections, and Rotary International.

His new book is “The Guatemala Reader: Extraordinary Lives & Amazing Stories”.  Today we are focusing on the important soft power vs. hard power concepts that are under intense discussion.  Soft power, as opposed to hard power, is an example of how international overseas groups interact to make a difference in the lives of people abroad as well as benefiting their country's image, business opportunities, diplomatic initiatives and partnerships. Some of the most prominent soft power organizations are the US Peace Corps, USAID, CARE, Rotary International, faith-based groups and other humanitarian service clubs. America's credibility is devastated through the slash and burn of the USAID programs by Elon Musk and DOGE.  Russia and China are delighted that the US has weakened itself and is unilaterally surrendering its international leadership.

Rotary International offers a solution through its unmatched global platform of 46,000 clubs, bringing 1.4 million people together across over 200 countries.John Hewko, Rotary's General Secretary and CEO, shared in today's episode how Rotary's mission addresses this growing issue. “Our clubs are all about bringing people together, about building connections,” John explained. “It provides an outstanding vehicle to stay connected, not be isolated, and to make a difference through that connection.”Since its founding in 1905, Rotary has evolved from a professional networking organization to a dynamic platform for community service. Members find opportunities to engage in local, regional, and international projects, making a tangible impact. John emphasized the organization's flexibility, allowing clubs to pursue initiatives that resonate with their members. “Rotary is exactly the opposite in terms of top-down,” he noted. “Each club has significant autonomy to carry out those things that the members are passionate about.”One of Rotary's most inspiring examples of grassroots initiative is the organization's decades-long effort to eradicate polio. What began as a small vaccination project in the Philippines has grown into a global campaign, reducing cases from 350,000 annually in 1985 to just 88 last year. “Rotarians have contributed over $2.7 billion to that effort,” John shared. “It's a great example of the power of individuals rallying around a cause.”Rotary's adaptability and global reach make it a powerful antidote to isolation. Through fellowship and service, members build deep connections while contributing to meaningful projects. If you're looking for an organization where you can engage locally and make an impact globally, Rotary might be the perfect fit.Visit Rotary.org to find a club near you and join a community of changemakers.tl;dr:* Rotary's 46,000 clubs combat loneliness and isolation by building community and fostering connections.* Members engage in local, regional, and global projects, including Rotary's polio eradication campaign.* Rotary's adaptability includes online and cause-based clubs, attracting diverse, younger members worldwide.* John Hewko's superpower, visionary leadership, transforms strategic ideas into impactful global initiatives.* Visit Rotary.org to join a network empowering individuals to make a difference globally and locally. How to Develop Visionary Leadership As a SuperpowerJohn's superpower is his ability to envision strategic goals and rally people around them. “It's grasping a vision, a strategic direction, or an important idea and driving it to a successful outcome,” John explained. He highlighted his role in promoting regional flexibility within Rotary to adapt to different needs worldwide, demonstrating his knack for strategic thinking.John's leadership was pivotal in transforming a local Rotary fundraising event, the Tour de Tucson bike ride, into a global effort. Initially raising $15,000 annually, John mobilized Rotary's global network, helping to generate over $70 million for polio eradication in 12 years. His passion for cycling and strategic vision turned a modest initiative into a monumental success.Tips for Developing Visionary Leadership:* Analyze challenges critically to identify barriers to success.* Pilot ideas locally to build momentum and demonstrate feasibility.* Use thoughtful arguments to build consensus rather than imposing solutions.* Foster adaptability by recognizing when traditional methods are no longer effective.* Leverage networks and communication to amplify successful ideas.By following John Hewko's example and advice, you can make visionary leadership a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileJohn Hewko (he/him):General Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, Rotary InternationalAbout Rotary International: Rotary unites a global network of volunteer leaders dedicated to tackling the world's most pressing humanitarian challenges and creating lasting change. Engage to support our work.Devin: Carol, what is your superpower?Carol: I think my superpower is I believe in hard work and persistence, and that's what helps drive forward the progress in polio eradication.Polio eradication is one of the most remarkable global health initiatives of our time. Today is World Polio Day, a day to focus our attention on history being made.As I discussed with Carol Pandak, Director of PolioPlus at Rotary International, in today's episode, the end of polio is not just a dream—it's a real possibility. Carol highlighted that Rotary's commitment to this effort dates back to 1979 when the organization first launched a campaign in the Philippines, making a promise to the children of the world.Rotary leads the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, a collaboration that includes UNICEF, the US CDC, the World Health Organization, the Gates Foundation and GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance. This isn't just about numbers. As Carol emphasized, "We made a promise to the children of the world, and as Rotary members and a community, we live up to those commitments. We are in it until every child is protected from polio." Later, she added, “Making history is hard!”The progress is staggering. In 1988, when the Global Polio Eradication Initiative began, there were 350,000 polio cases annually, paralyzing children worldwide. Today, that number has dropped to just 36 cases, restricted to Afghanistan and Pakistan. Carol noted, “The fact that India achieved the goal is a proof point that we can indeed eradicate polio in some of the most difficult places.”What makes polio different from other diseases is its eradication potential. "It is possible to stop the transmission of polio through vaccination," Carol explained. The novel oral polio vaccine (NOPV2) has already made a significant impact, reducing vaccine-derived polio cases worldwide. The possibility of eradicating polio and protecting future generations from paralysis is within reach. This effort represents a historic opportunity, and Rotary's leadership in the fight against polio is a powerful testament to what can be achieved through global collaboration. To learn more or support the effort, visit endpolio.org.tl;dr:* In today's episode, Carol Pandak emphasized the critical role of persistence and hard work in driving the progress of polio eradication, which Rotary International has been committed to since 1979.* Carol shared that the eradication of polio is achievable, much like smallpox, through vaccination efforts that stop the transmission of the virus among children, particularly under the age of five.* Despite significant progress, with only 36 cases in Afghanistan and Pakistan in 2024, Carol stressed that continued effort is necessary to eliminate the wild poliovirus.* A new oral polio vaccine introduced in 2021 has significantly reduced vaccine-derived polio cases, demonstrating the power of innovation and global partnerships, including the Gates Foundation's contributions.* Carol highlighted a remarkable success in brokering a ceasefire in Gaza to immunize 560,000 children, showcasing the extraordinary global collaboration required to continue these efforts, even in conflict zones. How to Develop Persistence and Hard Work As a SuperpowerCarol defines her superpower as a belief in hard work and persistence. In her role leading Rotary's participation in the global effort to eradicate polio, Carol emphasizes that such long-term, ambitious goals can only be achieved by staying committed, even when the path becomes difficult. This perseverance has been critical in pushing forward the progress toward a polio-free world, showing that unwavering dedication can lead to historic results. An anecdote that exemplifies Carol's superpower involves her decision to shift focus mid-way through her doctoral dissertation, a daunting challenge given the established path she had already committed to. Carol pivoted from her original topic to study civil society in post-communist Hungary, requiring her to secure a grant, live in Hungary, and adapt to local conditions for her research. Her hard work and persistence paid off, resulting in her dissertation being published as a book, a proud accomplishment that highlights her ability to overcome obstacles through sustained effort.Tips for Developing Persistence:* Focus on the End Goal: Stay motivated by keeping the ultimate objective in mind, even when immediate progress is slow.* Learn from Setbacks: Use challenges as learning opportunities to adjust strategies and continue moving forward.* Have Hard Conversations: Engage with others, listen, and problem-solve together, particularly when faced with difficult situations.* Celebrate Small Wins: Acknowledge incremental successes to build confidence and fuel further persistence.By following Carol Pandak's example and advice, you can make persistence a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileCarol Pandak (she/her):Director of PolioPlus, Rotary InternationalAbout Rotary International: Rotary unites a global network of volunteer leaders dedicated to tackling the world's most pressing humanitarian challenges and creating lasting change. I think my superpower, if I have one, is that I will lean into things that scare me. I may appear fearless to other people, but I'm not. Trust me! I feel the fear, but I'm never going to run away from fear. I will lean into fear.Author's note: North Carolina, especially Asheville, but also including the broader region, was devastated by Hurricane Helene. Please consider joining me in making a donation to Rotary International, where the funds will be distributed locally where needed and will be matched by the Rotary Foundation. In today's episode, I had the honor of speaking with filmmaker Kerry David, who has dedicated her career to telling impactful stories through her lens. Her latest project, "Open Secret," delves into a difficult subject—systemic child abuse and the corruption that allowed it to continue in North Carolina schools. Despite the heartbreaking topic, Kerry finds and showcases the resilience of individuals fighting to make a difference.Kerry's journey with this project began unexpectedly when she moved to North Carolina. Initially hesitant to take on another heavy subject, Kerry ultimately decided to lend her talents to highlight a story of immense courage. “The film really is about the courage to challenge something in your community that isn't working despite this being detrimental potentially to your own self,” she shared. What makes this project truly unique is Kerry's decision to raise funds through a regulated investment crowdfunding campaign on Wefunder. This approach allows people from all over the country to participate in the movement against abuse in schools. “Allowing people everywhere to invest in this film is a way of helping to maximize your audience, maximize the impact, maximize the reach,” she explained. By involving the community, Kerry aims to spark a national conversation and prevent future tragedies. This opportunity to invest in a project that combines social impact with powerful storytelling is rare, and Kerry's passion shines through every frame of her work. If you're moved by this story, consider joining the effort to support change—just as Kerry has done.tl;dr:* In today's episode, Kerry David shared her experience transitioning from working at Paramount Pictures and with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman to starting her own production company and directing impactful documentaries.* Kerry discussed her latest project, "Open Secret," which explores systemic abuse in North Carolina schools and the courage of community members who fought against the corruption that enabled it.* Kerry emphasized her superpower of leaning into fear, recounting a challenging decision to change filming locations for safety during her previous project, demonstrating her ability to balance courage with prudence.* The episode highlighted Kerry's initiative in founding the nonprofit Over and Above Africa, which supports anti-poaching efforts and raises awareness through film.* Kerry explained her decision to use crowdfunding on WeFunder for her latest film to involve and empower communities nationwide to tackle systemic issues beyond North Carolina. How to Develop Leaning into Fear As a SuperpowerKerry's superpower is her ability to “lean into fear.” She doesn't ignore or try to eliminate fear—instead, she faces it head-on, refusing to let it control her decisions or actions. This willingness to confront fear, rather than shy away from it, allows Kerry to push boundaries and take on challenging projects that make a difference in the world. One powerful example of Kerry leaning into fear came during the production of her last film. She and her crew were scheduled to travel from South Africa to Uganda, but just days before, a nearby kidnapping involving three British citizens left her in a state of intense fear for her team's safety. Despite initially wanting to go ahead, Kerry made the difficult decision to pivot and film in Vietnam instead. This decision, rooted in both courage and concern for her crew's safety, ultimately kept them out of harm's way.To develop this superpower, Kerry suggests several actionable strategies:* Evaluate the consequences of not acting. Consider how avoiding a fearful situation could lead to missed opportunities or negative outcomes.* Honor your moral compass. When you know something is the right thing to do, face the fear and act anyway.* Start with small acts of courage. Practicing courage when the stakes are low helps build confidence for larger challenges.* Accept that fear is normal. Understand that feeling fear doesn't mean you're weak—it's an opportunity to show strength by moving forward despite it.By following Kerry's example and advice, you can make leaning into fear a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses.
