We dive into the latest 2024 UCI Crash Statistics report and some low-hanging fruit solutions to make road racing safer. Alvin talks about why CES 2025 matters if you're a bike nerd, even if they call it 'personal transportation.' Aulson Explains Goats Stay Warm and Amuse Themselves with Discarded Christmas Trees

Those looking for a different way to dispose of a Christmas tree, have some fun with goats and help the homeless at the same time, Goats to Go in Georgetown has a solution. As WHAV reported earlier, Goats to Go is collecting Christmas trees and making a party of it for the seventh year on Saturday, Jan. 11.Michelle Aulson of Goats to Go last week visited WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program, and noted how goats and Christmas trees are good for each other.“So goats, especially if they are eating, they are staying warm. Think about fueling a fire. Their little bodies will stay warm if they have a warm place to eat. We give them free range hay all winter and minerals, but the Christmas trees, goats need excitement. They need something fun to do. They use as scratching, rubbing their fur, rubbing their horns on it and nibbling. They nibble on the greenery of the trees, and the greenery is actually a natural dewormer,” she explained.Aulson says the goats like Douglas Fir trees the best. There is a suggested donation of $20 per family or tree that will go to Emmaus, a Haverhill based charity helping adults and children transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency, while the tree goes to the goats. The goats actually have a pretty busy schedule.“It started back in 2017, with the small goats coming home for the summer, and we thought we'd like to do a class with the yoga teacher. Goats like to jump on things, so they jump on people during classes—babies only we use because they're small and they learn to jump right up there with some goat treats, just like a dog. We kind of train them a little bit. And, everyone loves it. The smiles on the goats' faces—oh wait, maybe that's the smile on the people's faces, a little bit of both. Goats actually like people who are smiling and that definitely rings true when you see the classes,” she explained. But, when it's time to work, Aulson says the goats and sheep at the farm, have their grazing specialties.“They do. I like to say goats like to jump up and eat things that are high off the ground. The goats have a little bit more fun with what they eat. Stonewalls are a specialty. They can get in hillsides where people can't really mow. Sheep, on the other hand, eat grasses mostly, but they will eat poison ivy if it's on the ground cover. Sheep won't eat off a tree, they won't eat brush and shrubs. They mostly will eat the ground. So, depending on that, they're really good with our solar field grazing, where they have panels that goats have a reputation of jumping up. That's why goat yoga is so good.”Aulson says their sheep and goats also enjoy working at the John Greenleaf Whittier Birthplace in Haverhill, as well as a number of backyards and cemeteries around the area.Goats to Go seventh annual Christmas tree drop off takes place Saturday, Jan. 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Great Rock Farm, 201 Pond St., Georgetown. There is a reservation fee of $5 per car and suggested donation of $20 per family or tree cash or check. Venmo is available in advance. Checks may be made out to Emmaus. Are you Cold Weather prepared at home? We had a close call, hear how to stay warm and protect your home! Plus we tackle foods to serve and what not to have on this funny Christmas episode! Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News!   Episode 216 Details Be Prepared for Utility Outages 1. Test Emergency Equipment Regularly Ensure that your backup heating equipment, portable generators, or other devices are tested and in working order before an outage occurs. This includes checking the hoses used to hook up to propane heaters such as a portable Buddy Heater! 3. Check in With Neighbors & Report Outage Call or text neighbors to confirm the outage. Check if anyone, especially the elderly or vulnerable, needs assistance. A group report of the outage can prompt quicker action from utility providers. 4. Conserve Heat in Your Home To minimize heat loss: Close doors to unused rooms. Place towels under doors to block drafts. Keep curtains closed to retain indoor heat. How to Prevent Pipes From Freezing During a Power Outage Frozen pipes can burst, causing costly property damage. Here's how to protect your pipes: Insulate Your Pipes Ahead of Time Pipes running through unheated spaces, such as basements, garages, or external walls, are most at risk. Insulating them is the best long-term solution to prevent freezing. Short-Term Steps to Protect Pipes If pipes aren't insulated, take these actions during an outage: Open Cabinet Doors: Allow warm air to circulate around pipes under sinks. Let Water Trickle: Keep faucets slightly open to allow a slow, steady flow. Moving water is less likely to freeze. Well Water Users: Plan Ahead If you rely on a well, remember that you won't have running water without electricity. Store an emergency water supply for drinking and household use. Backup Power Source: Portable Generators Having a portable generator is a reliable way to power essential appliances during an outage. Here's what to consider: Fuel Supply: Stock enough fuel for several days. Proper Ventilation: Operate the generator outdoors to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Essential Devices: Use the generator to power heaters, refrigerators, or medical equipment. Important Safety Considerations During an Outage Medical Needs If you depend on electricity for medical devices, develop a backup plan with your healthcare provider. Ensure you have access to power sources or alternate locations. Carbon Monoxide Safety Generators, kerosene heaters, and other alternate heat sources must have proper ventilation to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. Always: Use generators outside. Install carbon monoxide detectors with battery backups. Never use grills, stoves, or ovens for indoor heating. The woman was walking with a cane when she placed it on an X-ray machine.  TSA officials stopped the machine and removed the cane. They pulled it apart and determined it was a cane sword where the blade is concealed inside the core of the cane.  Army Of 50 Inflatable Santa's Take Over Town The NY Post says an army of 50 giant inflatable Santas has taken over residents' front lawns in Lehi, Utah. Visitors driving through the neighborhoods say The Santas just kept coming with every turn, leaving everyone laughing so hard. Residents are embracing the holiday spirit in a big way with the imposing matching decorations. Coloradans Vote Down a Big Cat Hunting Ban: A Win for Hunters & Conservationists Colorado voters rejected a proposed hunting ban on mountain lions, lynx, and bobcats in a significant win for hunters and conservationists. The measure, Prop 127, would have banned hunting and trapping of these animals and limited the state wildlife management experts' authority.  The proposal was seen as a potential gateway to more hunting bans and a shift away from science-based wildlife management. The ban failed by a margin of over 55%, with 1.3 million "no" votes against 1.1 million "yes" votes. The opposition, including hunters and conservationists, argued that the decision should remain with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, not through public ballots. Wildlife professionals also expressed concern that the ban could set a troubling precedent for future wildlife management decisions. This vote follows the controversial 2020 approval of a gray wolf reintroduction, showing that Colorado voters are closely watching wildlife policy. I would love to take a poll — and maybe you can follow up with me by email and weigh in on this! — to find out whether you're team Spring & Summer Style or team Fall & Winter Fashion? Because often, I find that my clients have an easier time getting dressed in either the warmer or cooler months and the struggle to transition from one to the next can present a lot of challenges.   This is true for our friend, Rachael, who submitted today's Q&A Thursday question as well. Rachael has a soft, feminine style she loves, but she finds it difficult to incorporate her beloved pastels and girly embellishments when the temperatures require bundling up and the stores start pushing dark, moody hues.   So in today's episode, I'm going to offer up 3 simple tips to transition your style from an easy breezy summer vibe to the more practical needs that come with the fall and winter seasons. Whether you share Rachael's love of all things light and frilly or you prefer a different aesthetic, I'm confident these tips will make shopping and styling in the next season and whole lot easier. Let's dig in and get to work on building a fall and winter wardrobe you absolutely love!   FREE 5-MIN PERSONAL STYLE QUIZ: https://herstylellc.com/quiz HER STYLE BLOG: https://herstylellc.com/blog HER STYLE ON INSTAGRAM: https://www.instagram.com/heatherriggsstyle/ GET FEATURED ON A Q&A THURSDAY EPISODE: https://herstylellc.com/podcast JOIN HER STYLE COLLECTIVE: http://herstylellc.com/collective SIGN UP FOR MY FREE VIP EMAIL COMMUNITY: https://herstylellc.com/vip   Related Episodes: 90 - Want to Be a More Intentional Shopper?
