No one disputes that America has a problem with drugs. In 2021 alone there were almost 100,000 overdose deaths. This is why we need the government sponsored war on drugs, right?  Just imagine how bad things would be if no one was doing anything to resolve the various issues surrounding drug use. But is that true? Is there any data to support that our policies are even working? Join us as the late activist David Poses explains why we are thinking about overdoses and drug policy all wrong, and how the War on Drugs is actually a war on our own people – a war that is literally killing us. To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official episode page here. Guest Bio David Poses (1976 - 2022) was a writer, speaker, and activist. After hiding his struggle with depression and opioids for twenty years, he started opening up and challenging conventional addiction wisdom. He has been published by the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and New York Daily News and has appeared on national TV programs, including The Doctors TV Show, and numerous radio shows and podcasts. With candor, humor, and a unique perspective informed by science and experience, he advocates for evidence-based approaches to drug policy, prevention, and treatment. David lived in New York with his wife and two kids and entirely too many guitars for such a mediocre player. See more at DavidPoses.com. RMA-Episode 77 Show Notes:   This week Mike and Nat continue their mini-series on mental health in recovery by tackling the multi-headed beast that is PTSD. What is it? How does it manifest?  Most importantly,  what can we do about it?  Traditional treatment of substance abuse in America often focuses on the symptoms (alcohol or drug use), rather than the underlying problems, (trauma and underlying mental health issues). Much like giving someone an Advil when they have a brain aneurysm, treating the symptom may bring temporary relief, but it doesn't address the underlying problem. Is it time for a paradigm shift in the way we look at addiction and recovery? The guys break it down. PLUS, Mike drops a story of acid and delinquency at a Dead show in the not too distant past,  The Monksters share what they've been thinking about lately,  Recovery in the News looks at the latest research on the health benefits of alcohol (there are none),  and the week in weird wonders whether that thing on the sidewalk is an alien or an embryo, on a psychedelic, empathetic, copacetic episode of Recovery in the Middle Ages. RMA-Episode 76 Show Notes:   AND, we're back! After a week of darkness, RMA returns with an episode for the ages. Mike and Nat dive into a review of David Poses groundbreaking 2021 work, The Weight of Air: A Story of the Lies about Addiction and the Truth about Recovery. In The Weight of Air, Poses chronicles his struggle to overcome mental illness and addiction. By age nineteen, he'd been through medical detox, inpatient rehab, twelve-step programs, and a halfway house. He saw his drug use as a symptom of depression, but the experts insisted that addiction was the problem. Over the next thirteen years, he went from one relapse to the next, drowning in guilt, shame, and secrets, until he finally found an evidence-based treatment that not only saved his life, but helped him thrive. Tragically, Poses passed away at the end of February. The cause of death has not been announced. Mike and Nat utilize the review of his book as a launching-off point for a discussion about depression and anxiety and how recovery from substance abuse doesn't make other pre-existing mental illnesses magically disappear.   PLUS, Grant drops a Big Three segment into this week's show, The Monksters speak about their experiences with depression and anxiety,   Recovery in the News looks some quasi-scientific claims being made by the weed industry, and the week in weird asks, “is that a mermaid in your museum or are you just happy to see me” on a medically assisted, not overly anxious, slightly under the weather episode of Recovery in the Middle Ages. Portugal decriminalized all drugs more than 20 years ago, in 2001. In this episode, I share my thoughts on Portugal's drug policy and I explain how it works: the good, the bad, and the not-yet-finished. Portugal's decriminalization efforts have lowered overall drug use rates by almost 75% and greatly reduced the most dangerous types of drug use through education and (barebones) compassion. I also discuss Methadone Vans, a new trend in the US which Portugal began using long ago to curb heroin addiction and the crimes associated with it. This episode is dedicated to the late, great David Poses. Your work was invaluable; we won't stop until it's done. We sit down with David Poses, author of The Weight of Air, to talk about his book and the world of science as it applies to opioid addiction. David's, through the story of David's life and trying to find recovery from heroin and pill abuse, tackles many of the tough topics around medication assisted treatment and the many misperceptions our society has. We talk about harm reduction and how our practices have not caught up with the science. David tells us how alcohol is not legal because it's safer, it's safer because it's legal and regulated. We investigate the science that is showing how much safer it is to use assistance in recovery as opposed to the old ideals of complete abstinence which are based entirely on a moral belief. We debate the old belief systems versus the new scientific evidence. Listen in and then go check out David's book, The Weight of Air. In this episode, we talk to Jay Shifman, the host of the Choose Your Struggle podcast who has experiences coping with addiction to prescription medication and self-identifies as a drug user in long-term recovery. We talk through the history of drug use, going all the way back to the first drug laws in the 1800s, all the way up to today, and consider what the next steps should be in drug policy evolution, looking at models like the Portugal Model. By the end, we may not come away agreeing on what our ideal society in terms of drug use should look like, but we all agree that we do need to conduct more research around the root causes of drug problems, given that so much of America's drug policy was rooted in propaganda and scare tactics. His writing has been published by The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and New York Daily News,, and he has appeared on national TV and radio shows including CBS' The Doctors, and many newspapers, magazines and podcasts. With grit, humor, and a searingly honest perspective formed by science and lived experience, David advocates for a shift from punitive, self-defeating prohibition laws and logic to an approach based on evidence, compassion, and the Harm Reduction philosophy. He lives in New York with his wife and kids and dogs and entirely too many guitars for such a mediocre player. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dhts/message

The expression goes, “Sometimes you gotta fight fire with fire.”  In the realm of the opioid crisis in America, that can be a suggestion to start an inferno. A pill for a pill? Does it even make sense?  We commonly  make the association with illegal drugs such as heroin when the topic is brought up, but many opioids are regulated by the FDA for the use in treatment for pain and derived naturally from the opium poppy plant.  Statistics show that 95% of opioid addicts have a co-occuring mental disorder.  The world is dealing with a disease that can be treated with drugs such as buprenorphine. It was this exact drug that helped David Poses kick a heroin addiction that overtook nearly two decades of his life and kept him successfully sober for more than ten years.   David gives a very detailed and poignant account of his battle in the highly anticipated memoir, “The Weight Of Air,” from Sandra Jonas Publishing available to sign up for pre-order and debuting May 2021. He's also shared his knowledge in speaking engagements and bylines in the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, NY Daily News, The Doctors and more.    The Weight of Air details how Poses led a double life, fueled by addiction and mental illness. The memoir pulls back the curtain of highly publicized and popular treatment facilities (including AA, Celebrate Recovery, and rehab) to show why the relapse rate is so high.  The book highlights the need to address mental health early on, and the connectivity of science to cure- not cause more pain.     The Weight Of Air is a raw and darkly comedic first person account of addiction, probing into the disregard for science and evidence in treatment, prevention and drug policy, racist catalysts behind US drug laws, and reasons that -despite its proven efficacy- Buprenorphine is inaccessible to the vast majority of 20 million addicts. Nobody wants to be labeled as a junkie. Our system is designed to punish, not save.  David Poses is on a mission to change this.

In this installment of The Way Out we've got an incredibly enlightening and supremely relevant interview with Author of the new book “The Weight of Air – A Story of the Lies About Addiction and the Truth about Recovery” and person in long term recovery, David Poses. David's story is rooted in the all-too-common dual struggle of having a mental health disorder such as depression and addiction, which creates an often incredibly difficult and complex chicken or the egg, which is the problem and which is the symptom, kind of issue to address. Are the substances causing the mental health disorder or is the mental health disorder the root and the cause of the addiction? Certainly, there's plenty of evidence to support the fact that drug and alcohol abuse and addiction can exacerbate mental health disorders, and indeed make difficult or impossible to effectively treat. Indeed, addiction can cause what might be best described as situational mental health issues like depression and anxiety and once the addiction is treated effectively and recovery is achieved the depression and anxiety lift or substantially improve. Conversely, the opposite is also true for many folks who are suffering from any one or a combination of a severe and often chronic clinical anxiety, depression or other mental health disorder that is causing such acute pain the only option is to kill it or numb it with a substance of choice, which often turns into a near intractable addiction. For David, his severe depression ultimately led to heroin use, which ultimately led a decade plus long addiction. David shares how a medication, buprenorphine, along with therapy was the key for him to achieve rewarding and enduring recovery when nothing else prior had worked, and why this can and should be a viable and available treatment option for those in the throws of opioid addiction and desperately looking for a way to safely and effectively stop opioid abuse and misuse and address their mental health so they can begin the life changing process that is recovery so listen up. The stigma of addiction is so bad that people who are struggling with it choose to hide it. However, addiction is not the real problem, but rather the symptom of all these underlying hurts, pains, and suffering.  Today's episode is a replay of an interview with David Poses, who recently passed away, in honor of his life and legacy. A writer, speaker, and activist, David was a tireless advocate for all who struggled with mental health or addiction issues. David is the author of The Weight of Air: A Story About the Lies of Addiction and the Truth of Recovery.  David struggled with addiction, which he chose to hide for a long time. After trying to find a treatment that worked for him, he soon discovered buprenorphine, an opioid used to treat opioid-use disorders, which also saved his life from heroin. David also realized that being sober only means abstaining from whatever it is you're addicted to, while recovery happens only when you've healed the wounds that led you to addiction in the first place. That being said, there are different ways to treat addiction, and so, ultimately, you have to find one that works for you. In this episode, you will hear:Resorting to heroin due to depression but it was also heroin that caused his depressionWhy AA wasn't the right solution for himFinding the treatment and recovery method that works for usHow opioids affect the brainTwo medications that have been proven to dramatically reduce your risk of death, relapse, and overdoseHow buprenorphine saved David's lifeAchieving recovery through healing the wounds that led you to addictionThe stigma of addiction Key Quotes:[13:58] - "For every kind of vice or addiction, your neurotransmitters rewire, and they seek out the next hit. There's the idea that sobriety gets easier with time and your brain heals in time and things go back to normal... But there have been a lot of studies about opioids that show that it doesn't necessarily go back."[21:12] - "There are two medications that are proven to dramatically reduce your risk of death, relapse, and overdose: methadone and buprenorphine. All other forms of treatment or medications do not, and many others actually do the exact opposite."[21:31] - “Any kind of abstinence-based treatment, whether it's forced or voluntary, increases your risk of overdose because you come out of it, you have no tolerance, and that's when people die.”[23:10] - "Addiction has been so siloed off away from medicine for so long. Even with doctors, I tell the doctor the history and they assume I'm in there looking for drugs."[35:03] - "If sobriety is I'm not taking drugs anymore or abstinence. Recovery is healing the wounds that led you to drugs in the first place."[39:09] - "The stigma of addiction is so bad that I was seriously contemplating suicide."[41:02] - "Addiction is not the problem. Addiction is definitely a problem but drugs are a form of self-medication."[47:12] - "With any physical or psychological thing, we identify the source of pain, and we treat it so you can heal. With addiction, we explicitly tell you to ignore the source of pain because it's an excuse."Subscribe and ReviewHave you subscribed to our podcast?
