Over the past month, there have been two dominant stories in American foreign policy. One, of course, is the war with Iran. The other is the much-anticipated summit between President Trump and Xi Jinping of China. And I think if you look closely at both of these stories, you see that our foreign policy has entered into a period of absolute incoherence. I'm not even sure what the status of the Iran war is at this point. What is Trump trying to achieve? What is he willing to accept? Taking a more hawkish approach to China has been a core and consistent principle of Trump's since his first term. He's been insistent that China has taken advantage of the United States and that America needed to change that dynamic and flex more power. But is that happening? Is that even Trump's position anymore? So I wanted to do an episode looking at China and Iran and trying to assess Trump's foreign policy in general and the ways he's remaking what America means on the world stage. New research led by Trinity College Dublin's AI Accountability Lab pinpoints the growing threat posed by the influence AI companies have over the rule of law, and people's lives, as well as outlining how society can stem the tide. The international team behind the work, which comprised researchers based in Ireland, the United States, Scotland and The Netherlands, mapped the growing and outsized influence that the "Big AI" industry exerts on the capture and control of the narrative, and of the regulatory measures related to AI and its ever-growing use in society. Growing risks of Big AI's control of narrative and regulation After taking a deep dive into literature and media reports, the multi-disciplinary team identified 27 established patterns of "corporate capture", a process by which regulation and public bodies come to act in the interest of corporations rather than people. Applying their classification to a dataset of 100 articles, specifically published around four critical events between 2023 and 2025 (the EU AI Act trilogues and the global AI summits in the UK, South Korea and France), they found 249 cases fitting capture patterns. Of these instances, the most prevalent relate to: 1) Narrative capture, dominated by narratives such as "regulation stifles innovation" and "red tape" whereby regulation is portrayed as unnecessary, excessive, or obsolete; and 2) Elusion of law, pertaining to violations and contentious interpretations of antitrust, privacy, copyright and labour laws. How does Big AI exert such influence? Growing evidence, outlined in the research, suggests that Big AI has undermined and resisted regulation, oversight and enforcement in a variety of ways, such as lobbying; retaliated against whistleblowers, researchers and law-makers; and benefited in some cases from a "revolving door" model where former policymakers go on to advise or take employment with major AI companies. There are also many examples of Big AI making significant donations to political parties, public officials owning equity in regulated companies, while some governments and political leaders have also set the stage to undermine existing rules. For example, after previously calling for "simplification", in October 2025 EU Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen explicitly advocated for deregulation. Dr Abeba Birhane, Director of Trinity's AI Accountability Lab, based in the ADAPT Research Ireland Centre and Trinity's School of Computer Science and Statistics, led the new research. She said: "In addition to 'narrative capture' and the violations and contentious interpretations of antitrust, privacy, copyright and labour laws that were most recurrent, we also found that Big AI frequently uses the notion that 'regulation stifles innovation' and that 'red tape can stymy national interest' to rationalise their control of the overall narrative." Zeerak Talat, one of the co-authors from the University of Edinburgh, added: "The regulatory and oversight structures and processes that govern the industry deeply impact everything from fostering public trust in systems marketed as AI to the credibility of scientific knowledge, and from educational and healthcare services to information ecosystems, the environment, rule of law and even the integrity of democratic processes." What is the potential impact of this research? Over the past decade, the AI industry has come to exert an unprecedented economic, political and societal power and influence. And that continues to grow. This work: 1) provides a new framework for understanding and identifying the many different ways in which Big AI controls the narrative and influences associated regulatory measures; and 2) categorises the most prevalent mechanisms in which the industry does that. In my continuing series of themes for your yoga classes, today we'll take a look at teaching classes that focus on balancing. This is such an important skill from a mobility perspective and as people age, balance degrades so it's helpful to focus on it in your classes. Recent studies from the past week highlight new insights into Ozempic and similar GLP-1 medications for weight loss. Researchers from the University of Eastern Finland, Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, and Griffith University in Australia analyzed large-scale data and found that semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic, significantly reduces risks of depression, anxiety, and addiction alongside its weight loss effects. According to their work published in The Lancet Psychiatry, users experienced a 44 percent lower risk of depression and a 38 percent drop in anxiety disorders during treatment periods. Psychiatric hospital visits fell by 42 percent, and substance use disorders decreased by 47 percent compared to times without the medication. The team suggests these benefits may stem from lifestyle changes or direct effects on the brain.Another study from Washington University School of Medicine, reported by Fox News, warns that stopping GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic quickly erodes heart health gains. Continuous use over three years lowered cardiovascular risk by 18 percent through reductions in cholesterol, blood pressure, inflammation, and insulin resistance. However, quitting for six months raised risk by 4 percent, one year by 14 percent, and two years by 22 percent. Restarting the drugs provided partial protection, only 12 percent, indicating some lasting damage from discontinuation. Lead researcher Ziyad Al-Aly described this as metabolic whiplash, with silent reversals in metabolic health that could lead to heart attacks or strokes.Oprah Winfrey continues to draw attention for her weight loss transformation using GLP-1 medications. The List reports that recent before-and-after photos from events like the 2025 Tony Awards reveal Ozempic neck, a sagging, crepey skin effect under the jaw due to rapid fat loss outpacing skin adjustment. Outside investors circling law firms may help some shoulder the growing costs of artificial intelligence, according to Mayer Brown's Jon Van Gorp. "I could see private capital providing specific funding for AI with a use agreement between the firm and the AI vehicle where it's tailored, just like litigation funding," Van Gorp, the firm's chairman, said on Bloomberg Law's On The Merits podcast. Still, the unique aspects of the legal services business pose challenges for broader outside investment in large firms, Van Gorp said. The "practice of law is still a profession, and lawyers still have their way of doing things," he said. Van Gorp spoke to Bloomberg Law reporter Roy Strom about AI's "big question that everybody's talking about." He also discussed his firm's focus on servicing energy markets, the turbulent times for private credit markets, and the impact of President Donald Trump's war on the legal industry. Spanish indie folk artist Guitarricadelafuente has come a long way since his days of posting covers on social media. Back then, he wasn't only inspired by his own culture, but American folk music as well, reinterpreting songs of Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. Eventually finding his own vein within the art of storytelling, Guitarrica began drawing inspiration from folklore, viewing it as not a snapshot from the past, but “something that already lives within us”. In his two albums, La Cantera and Spanish Leather, this is the concept he embraces, embodying the curiosity and joy of a kid that lives in a village, discovering the city for the first time.  There is a delicate melancholy in the music of Guitarricadelafuente, but a celebration of love and laughter, too.
