Our conversation with Professor Goode explores her recent book Agrotopias: An American Literary History of Sustainability. Two recent phrases form the impetus of her book: "We Can't Solve the Climate Crisis Unless Black Lives Matter" and "Climate Change Is also a Racial Justice Problem". Goode traces these back to the enigmatic Thomas Jefferson to illuminate and enmesh the supposedly protoecological American past with its racist and eugenic histories by analyzing agrotopias. She defines agrotopias as "seemingly ideal worlds of agrarian stability and productive labor" (3).   Below are the three texts Goode offers as examples of alternatives to Agrotopian thinking:   Earth Democracy - Vandana Shiva Braiding Sweetgrass - Robin Wall Kimmerer Replenishing the Earth: Spiritual Values for Healing Ourselves and the World - Wangari Maathai (As part of the Green Belt Movement)   For more on Abby Goode:   https://abbygoode.wordpress.com/     ASLE EcoCast: If you have an idea for an episode, please submit your proposal here: https://forms.gle/Y1S1eP9yXxcNkgWHA   Twitter: @ASLE_EcoCast Lindsay Jolivette: @lin_jolivette   If you're enjoying the show, please consider subscribing, sharing, and writing reviews on your favorite podcast platform(s)!   Episode recorded February 5, 2024. Isabella Alexander's book Copyright and Cartography: History, Law, and the Circulation of Geographical Knowledge (Bloomsbury, 2023) explores the intertwined histories of mapmaking and copyright law in Britain from the early modern period up to World War 1, focusing chiefly on the 18th and 19th centuries. Taking a multidisciplinary approach and making extensive use of the archival record, this is the first detailed, historical account of the relationship between maps and copyright. As such, it examines how the emergence and development of copyright law affected mapmakers and the map trade and how the application of copyright law to the field of mapmaking affected the development of copyright doctrine. Its explorations cast new light on the circulation of geographical knowledge, different cultures of authorship and creativity, and connections between copyright law, print culture, technology, and society.  The book will be of interest to legal historians, intellectual property scholars, and historians of the map and print culture, as well as those interested in the history of knowledge and how legal control over data has been exerted over time. It takes the reader back to the earliest attempts to establish who can own and control geographical information and its graphic representation in the form of a map. In so doing, it establishes a long history of tension between the interests of private enterprise, government, and the public. The book's investigations end in the first decades of the 20th century, but the tensions it identifies persist in the 21st century, although today paper maps have been largely replaced by web-based mapping platforms and digital geospatial data. The eBook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. The Literature of the Classical world can seem distant to us, separated by 2000 years and all the changes that came during those years. But throughout that time, Classics has been understood and used in ways which enrich our understanding of these original texts as well as our understanding of the time at the point of reception. Reception studies attempt to work with this idea and think about the interesting and important afterlife of these classical cultural models. In this episode of OxPods, Classics and English undergraduate Amelia Glover-Jewesbury interviews Professor Fiona Macintosh and Professor Constanze Güthenke who teach on the Reception of the Classics in poetry post-1900, to discuss questions of the reception and legacy of Classics in general. They discuss the place of Classics and Reception in academia, as well as some of the questions around the workings of the disciplines of Classics and Reception. Looking to make the most of Oxford's world-leading professors, we decided to set up a platform to interview these academics on the niche, weird and wonderful from their subjects. #turkey #folktale #turkiye Today we are back in the book of Turkish folklore written down by Ignaz Kunos. This story is about a prince in need of a princess and the adventures he has getting her. Also, it has the guy with the balls of day and night in the last Armenian story. A listener said that they might be related and here's a very similar story. Listener Shoutout: Gaborone Botswana Named after Kgosi Gaborone, or King Gaborone, a king of the Tlokwa people. There is evidence of people residing where the city stands, going back to around 400 bce. During the early 19th century, there was a lot of upheaval and migration in the area. In 1966, it became only the 11th British dependency to become independent. It is on the very edge of Botswana and South Africa. It is a great place for seeing lots of beautiful wildlife. Within evolutionary anthropology, a persistent yet pervasive question is that of the traits of the LCA. The LCA is the last common ancestor shared by the humans, or the Homo genus, and chimpanzees and bonobos, otherwise known as the Pan genus. Learning about the LCA can inform us of what it really means to be human. What traits are unique to the hominin lineage? And how did these traits contribute to the success of our species? Izzy Rycroft, a third year Human Scientist at St Hugh's College, discusses these questions and more with Thomas Püschel, a Professor of Evolutionary Anthropology at University of Oxford. Why do some international institutions fail in their stated aims, while others succeed?  In this episode, Jack Morrin, PPE 2nd year at New College, speaks to Ranjit Lall, Associate Professor in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Oxford, to discuss his book 'Making International Institutions Work', which presents an explanation for this variation in institutional performance. The trajectory of evolving species is strongly affected by the environment in which they exist, and one particularly interesting example of this is when organisms evolving on islands differ predictably from their continental counterparts through a suite of morphological and behavioural traits, known as ‘The Island Syndrome'. But what is it that's so special about islands that leads to this process, and what can biologists learn from the species that exhibit the syndrome? In this rendition of The Way Out I'm pleased to bring you my interview with Founder of Bellwhether Executive Development Firm, author, podcaster, and person in long term Recovery Jim Frawley. Jim shares with us his journey to and through recovery to this point and his individual pathway which on the surface may appear to be unconventional in that Jim didn't follow any particular pathway per se nor does Jim consider himself a member of any recovery organization or group. Despite these surface level differences to those who do follow a defined recovery pathway like the 12-Steps or SMART Recovery, as is so common among us who identify as persons in recovery, there's far more that unites us in our shared experiences prior to Recovery and in our individual Recovery journeys. One overarching message that comes through Jim's story is summed up in his favorite quote “It is hard to be satisfied with life, if you're never satisfied with yourself.”. In other words, the journey starts with us and for Jim it was a process of becoming increasingly satisfied with himself so he could then create and sustain meaning and purpose in all facets of his life and ultimately experience the satisfaction of a sober life well lived so listen up. We are not anti-alcohol crusaders here on The Way Out Podcast, rather we aim to illuminate the spectrum that substance use and abuse exists on, and elevate all of the pathways we possibly can to help you Recover and indeed discover the person and life that is waiting for you on the brighter side so listen up. The winter anime season is just getting started and Shaun found it a good time to show Remington 3 episodes of last season's yuri gem “I'm in Love with the Villainess”. In this edition of The Way Out I'm pleased to bring you my interview with husband, father, person in long term recovery and Author of the book Finding Myself Sober, Dean Anderson. Dean shares his journey to and through Recovery to this point with us with genuine humor, humility and an unmistakable wisdom that can only come from doing the work and practicing certain recovery principles on a daily basis. Dean's story is proof positive alcoholism and addiction doesn't discriminate. As we demonstrate often on this podcast, having an idyllic childhood is no guarantee against developing alcohol or substance use disorder despite the high prevalence of trauma and mental health disorders among those of us who identify as persons in Recovery. Dean's story and his book bring to light key Recovery principles that underlay the 12-Step program of Recovery that are in fact universally applicable to all of us whom are looking for a practical way to implement positive change in our lives as we progress in our individual recovery so listen up.   Learn more about Finding Myself Sober by Dean S Anderson: https://a.co/d/4AZB7xz Recovery literature (quit-lit) recommendation: The Shack by William P. In this rendition of The Way out Co-host Jason sits down with person in long term Recovery, Greg Greene. An additional word of caution, this episode contains subject matter that may be disturbing, including graphic discussion of drug use and suicide. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please call or text 988 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Greg shares his story with us from a very open and vulnerable place. A former IV meth user, stints in jails and prisons, and a suicide attempt survivor, he pulls no punches in his sharing, and he even got Jason to share some pretty hard stuff for anyone admit on the air. Indeed, it was a fine opportunity for a couple of men in Recovery to connect and get gut level honest about how some things affected their mental health, as well as how drugs diminished their moral code. As Jason said about this interview and I quote:  “I don't know the last time I said ‘you're telling my story' to someone so many times!” We hope you come along for the ride as we get to know Greg and see how far he has come on his recovery journey and we're convinced you'll be glad you did so listen up.
