In some ways the story of Rev. Dr. Deborah Brooks is the story of returning. First, there was her returning to live in Cranford after spending the first ten years of her life in town. There was also returning to St. Mark AME church, first as a member and then as the pastor. In this week's episode hear about Rev. Brooks journey, a bit about the congregation and an upcoming Family & Friends Day to which the community is invited.
In a harrowing case that has shaken the city to its core, a New York man, Stephen Giraldo, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the heinous attempted murder of his estranged wife, Sophia Giraldo. This conviction comes a month after he entered a guilty plea in September. Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz's office provided the details in a press statement released this past Friday. The Heart-Wrenching Incident The chilling incident occurred during the early morning hours of December 27, 2022. Security camera footage captured Stephen Giraldo outside the residence of Sophia. The events that unfolded were nothing short of nightmarish. As the 41-year-old Sophia made her way in front of the vehicle, Stephen allegedly turned to their three children inside the car—aged 11, 9, and 6 at the time—and chillingly advised them to "keep your seat belt on," as previously reported by PEOPLE. He then deliberately ran over his wife. The horror did not end there. As the statement from the DA's office narrated, "After colliding with the victim, the car turned onto its side. The defendant allegedly crawled out the passenger side window of the vehicle and continued his attack, stabbing his wife with a knife." Sophia, though having miraculously survived the brutal onslaught, was left with catastrophic injuries. She has remained unconscious for the ten months since the attack, suffering from severe neurological damage, a punctured liver, and multiple broken bones. Their children, the traumatized witnesses to this brutality, were fortunately physically unharmed. The Prosecution's Stand Reflecting on the grievousness of the case, DA Katz asserted, “This is one of the most brutal cases we have prosecuted.” She further commented on the unimaginable nature of the crime, stating, “To tell your children to ‘buckle up,' purposefully hit their mother, and then climb over your son to continue your attack with a knife is unconscionable.” With the sentencing of Stephen Giraldo, Katz expressed hope that it brings “some measure of justice.” Community Support and A Ray of Hope In the wake of such a horrifying event, the community has rallied together in support of Sophia and her family. A GoFundMe campaign initiated shortly after the attack, by Sophia's father Chuck Brooks, has amassed over $50,000 in donations. In a heartfelt note on the fundraiser page, Chuck termed the incident and the ensuing journey as a "whirlwind of a tragedy." He went on to thank the generous donors and supporters who have been pillars of strength during such tumultuous times. The funds raised have been instrumental in aiding Sophia's family, who have traveled from Maryland to New York. The money has substantially assisted in offsetting the significant costs associated with their frequent and taxing visits, as elucidated in detail on the GoFundMe page. Coincidentally, the sentencing took place a day before what should have been a day of celebration—Sophia's birthday on Saturday, as shared in a poignant social media post by her mother, Deborah Brooks. Conclusion Stephen Giraldo's sentencing is a sobering reminder of the dark corners of human behavior. While the judicial verdict has been rendered, the healing journey for Sophia and her children remains long and fraught with challenges. It's a hope that, with the continued support of the community and the strength of the human spirit, the family finds the resilience to rebuild their lives. The UNEXPECTED podcast is a pregnancy and parenthood podcast hosted by Deborah Brooks. In this episode, Deb chats with fellow Speech-Language Pathologist, Allison Fors about the recent birth of her daughter who was born with cleft palate and micrognathia. A cleft palate is an opening or split in the roof of the mouth that occurs when the tissue doesn't fuse together during development in the womb. A cleft palate often includes a split (cleft) in the upper lip (cleft lip) but can occur without affecting the lip.Micrognathia, or mandibular hypoplasia, is a condition in which a child has a very small lower jaw. A child with micrognathia has a lower jaw that's much shorter or smaller than the rest of their face. Children may be born with this problem, or it can develop later in life. Here's a little more on Allison: I'm Allison, a speech & language resource author. A little bit about me…I have primarily worked with diagnoses of autism, Down syndrome, and developmental delays. My journey began when I realized most materials I was using weren't engaging enough and weren't targeted to effectively teach these populations. I realized I need to adjust my teaching to each child's learning style and that the best learning happened when it didn't feel like work! That's when I began making my own resources – especially for my pre-verbal, low attention kids. I found that interactive and engaging resources were an effective way to make progress with my students. I also found that if I made the resource flexible and adaptable with multiple goals to target (to meet a variety of needs and levels), I could use one resource with most of my students. After a few years, I began sharing and selling them!My speech therapy resources are interactive and engaging, even for the hardest of kids to reach, and easily adaptable to target many goals and use with many students. Whether you are an SLP, special education teacher, ESL teacher, behavioral therapist, or parent, I hope you find my resources helpful! I am especially passionate about early language, understanding and incorporating sensory strategies into my sessions, and creating no prep and no print resources.I also began making clipart to use in my resources and subsequently started selling them for other teachers to use in their educational materials! The images I make are functional and versatile to meet a variety of needs. They are appropriate for all ages (older students as well as younger) and are intentionally made to be able to teach language concepts and life skills. Each set comes with both color and black & white images in high-resolution PNG formats.I love seeing how you are using my speech therapy resources and clipart in your classes and projects from around the world. Please share them with me – on Instagram, Facebook, or via email!I live in Sacramento, CA with my husband, our son and daughter, and 2 cats! I'm originally from the San Francisco Bay Area (Palo Alto) but I've also lived in Los Angeles, Utah, Hawaii, and Texas. I love all things outdoors, going on adventures, and traveling. You can find me featured in the ASHA Leader (Jan 2018 edition, Jun 2019 edition, Mar 2020 edition) and on the Real Talk SLP Podcast and the Speechie Side Up Podcast. Thanks for stopping by! That's the pain kind of by your hip/pelvic area as your ligaments are stretching. I think I had that pain around 16-18 weeks. So don't be alarmed if you feel that down the road! Best of luck!!
