Episode 158 - Freedom's Path, The Story of Salem Chapel and the Underground RailroadDo you have a significant historical landmark in your community - have you spent time there? Well I did. I spent time at the last stop of the Underground Railroad, where black slaves seeking freedom found community, safety and the true freedom they desired. I had the honour to sit in this small chapel and to let the walls and the wood pews tell me about the history of this lighthouse of freedom.WELCOME TO THE SALEM CHAPEL SANCTUARY OF HISTORYPeople of African descent began settling in the St. Catharines, Ontario area around 1788 and they brought their religion with them. Many were followers of Rev. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. Wesley was a staunch abolitionist and advocated for the end of slavery and the slave trade. Many of the freedom seekers that relocated to this area were also followers of Bishop Richard Allen, the founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AMEC).An AMEC Society was established in St. Catharines, Ontario between 1814 and 1820. A small chapel was built to serve the faithful in the Queenston Street area. When construction on the first Welland Canal began (1824-1829) in their neighbourhood, members of the Black community relocated to the under developed area of Geneva and North Streets. In 1835, they purchased property on North Street from abolitionist businessmen William Hamilton Merritt and Oliver Phelps to build a new AMEC. This church would be the second in St. Catharines and it would hold about 70 members. In 1837, the St. Catharines group sent a petition to the AMEC New York Conference asking for pastoral care and to be received into the AMEC Connection. As a result of this action, AMEC missionaries stationed in Upper Canada were instructed to "regulate the existing Societies, organize more in other regions and also communicate that they shall be subject to the order of the Bishops, and amendable to the Annual Conference of the New York District." One year later, the New York AMEC Conference organized a church in St. Catharines with forty members and two local preachers. The church was named Bethel Chapel. In less than a generation this Methodist group would out grow the second church. The Black community inSt. Catharines began to increase immediately after the US Congress passed the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. Thousands of free and escaped African Americans living in the Northern States moved to various parts of Canada West to secure their safety and freedom. The new fugitive slave laws also caused thousands of fleeing enslaved African Americans to settle in Canada. In order to accommodate the influx of new comers, the AMEC congregation in St. Catharines decided to build a larger church. Resident freedom seekers began to construct the third church in October 1853. On November 4, 1855 the new AMEC was opened and publicly "dedicated to the Service of Almighty God" by Bishop Daniel Alexander Payne. In less than one year (September 1856), most of the Canadian AME Churches would separate from the AMEC Conference in the US and establish the British Methodist Episcopal Church (BMEC). This was partly due to the 1850 Fugitive Slave Act. Most of the AME Church members in Canada refused to attend Conference in the US because of the fugitive slave laws. They also wanted to identify themselves more closely with the country that granted them their freedom and equal rights. As a Methodist meeting house, from its early beginnings the AMEC in St. Catharines hosted anti-slavery lectures, civic protests and provided shelter and aid to the newly arrived freedom seekers until the end of the Civil War. It's Thursday, September 5th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Sudanese conflict has displaced 8 million International Christian Concern reports the body of Christ continues to suffer in Sudan, Africa after civil war broke out in the country last year. The conflict has displaced over eight million civilians, including many religious minorities. Christians are a minority in the northeastern African country and have faced persecution for decades. Both sides in the civil war have targeted Christians through attacks on churches and even killing religious leaders. The Tahir Institute for Middle East Policy noted, “Muslims who converted to Christianity continued to be prosecuted and tortured, even though the ‘crime' of apostasy officially no longer existed in the statute books.” Sudan is ranked eighth on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most dangerous to be a Christian. 14-year-old Georgia student killed 2 students and 2 teachers A 14-year-old student named Colt Gray opened fire at a Georgia high school and killed four people on Wednesday morning, sending students scrambling for shelter in their classrooms — and eventually to the football stadium — as officers swarmed the campus and parents raced to find out if their children were safe, reports the Associated Press. The dead were identified as two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in Winder, about an hour's drive from Atlanta. At least nine other people — eight students and one teacher — were taken to hospitals with injuries. Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith became emotional as he spoke during the briefing. SMITH: “I never imagined that I would be speaking to the media in my career over something that happened today, the pure evil that happened today. “This hits home for me. I was born and raised here. I went to school in this school system. My kids go to this school system. I'm proud of this school system. “My heart hurts for these kids. My heart hurts for our community, but I want to make it very clear that hate will not prevail in this county. Love will prevail over what happened today.” The gunman is in custody. African Methodist Episcopal keeps ban against homosexual “marriage” The African Methodist Episcopal Church held its General Conference in Columbus, Ohio last month. The historically-black denomination, also known as the AME Church, has districts in the U.S. and Africa. At the recent conference, AME voted to keep its ban on faux homosexual marriage. In contrast, the United Methodist Church voted in favor of such vile passion relationships earlier this year. Since Roe overturned, attacks on pro-life centers have increased The U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade back in 2022. Since then, state governments have been increasing their attacks on pro-life groups. Daniel Schmid with Liberty Counsel told The Christian Post, “We saw attacks on pro-life centers significantly occur across the country after Dobbs, and now it has transitioned from criminals who are engaging in vandalism and threats to state efforts, government-backed efforts, to suppress the speech and views and sheer existence of the crisis pregnancy centers.” Pro-life groups are now having to fight for their free speech in states like New York and Massachusetts. U.S. abortions are up Meanwhile, the number of abortions in the U.S. are up since the overturning of Roe v. Wade. The pro-abortion group Society of Family Planning released their latest data. The average number of abortions per month between January and March of this year was 98,990. Chemical abortions are on the rise through virtual visits, allowing doctors to ship abortion kill pills to other states. These so-called “telehealth abortions” averaged nearly 20,000 per month between January and March. In Matthew 15:19-20, Jesus reminds us, “For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, slander. These are the things that defile a person.” Kamala leads in Wisconsin and Michigan; Trump leads in Arizona CNN released a new poll of voters in six battleground states ahead of the presidential election. Vice President Kamala Harris leads in Wisconsin and Michigan. Former President Donald Trump leads in Arizona. The two candidates are nearly tied in Georgia, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. However, many voters are undecided. Fifteen percent of respondents across the battleground states said they have not firmly decided their choice for president. Americans are getting more isolated and lonely The Survey Center on American Life released a report on social isolation in the U.S. The report noted Americans are losing touch with their social networks as loneliness and isolation increase. Americans are generally not involved in social groups with the exception of religious ones. Religious organizations draw from both the less educated and the college-educated. Although, those with less education are becoming increasingly unattached. Also, young adults are also becoming unattached from the church. Only 28% are members of a religious organization compared to 43% of seniors. Thief steals kids' lemonade stand money And finally, two children from Virginia have become a national example of forgiveness, reports CBN News. Over the heat of summer, 10-year-old Rebecca Caldwell and her 8-year-old brother Joshua opened a lemonade stand in front of their house in Chesapeake. Sadly, a man dropped by seemingly for a drink, only to make off with the children's earnings of $40. As the story spread, the Caldwells used it as an opportunity to talk about forgiveness. REPORTER: “Why did you pray for the man who stole your money?” JOSHUA: “Because I wanted him to become a Christian.” Rebecca had this thought. REBECCA: “I just think it's better to forgive than to just to always be mad at the guy, because then you're just always going to think back on the day and be like, ‘Oh, I'm so mad at that guy.'” And their mother, Mrs. Caldwell, weighed in about the importance of forgiveness. MRS. CALDWELL: “We've talked a lot about forgiveness in our interviews, Some people have asked why we choose to forgive. If God can do all this through a lemonade stand, he can do it through anything. He can do the impossible. “We just want people to know that God forgave us. So, we can forgive other people.” In response, the community organized a lemonade event that raised over $6,000 for the kids. The youngest of 7 siblings, Rebecca and Joshua are giving some to their eldest sibling to fund her missionary trip to Asia. In Mark 11:25, Jesus said, “And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, September 5th, in the year of our Lord 2024. Little compares to the powerful spiritual force of joining voices to harmonize in songs of freedom. It's a transformative occasion when done with the fullness of our being that creates a sense of communal solidarity. We become part of something larger than ourselves. It plants the seeds of hope and compassion in the face of face of oppression and injustice. Reedy Chapel, located at 20th Street and Broadway in Galveston, is a historic church that played a role in the announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas on June 19, 1865, a date now celebrated as Juneteenth. Established in 1848 and known as the "Mother Church of Texas," it became the first African Methodist Episcopal Church in the state and hosted the first two annual conferences of the AME Church. Despite being rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1885 and damaged by the 1900 storm, Reedy Chapel remains an active community space and houses one of the oldest pipe organs in Texas.Galveston Unscripted What is Galveston Unscripted?Follow Galveston Unscripted on Spotify or Apple Podcasts! White Pastor Defends Slavery And Calls Martin Luther King Jr. A 'Non-Believer Who Misrepresented Christ'News One, By Zack Linly, on March 1, 2024https://newsone.com/5047878/john-macarthur-white-pastor-martin-luther-king-jr/In this segment, the discussion revolves around John MacArthur, a Christian pastor at Grace Community Church in California, who has garnered attention for his controversial views on race, slavery, and religious freedom. MacArthur criticized a group of Evangelical pastors for honoring Martin Luther King Jr. during Black History Month, labeling MLK as an unbeliever and accusing the pastors of succumbing to the "woke movement" and racial baiting. MacArthur's comments reflect a supremacist interpretation of Christianity, justifying racial disparities and advocating for slavery as part of Christianity's history. This narrative contrasts with attempts to whitewash MLK's legacy, portraying him as a colorblind figure, while MacArthur depicts him as a threat to white supremacy.MacArthur's interpretation of Christianity rationalizes bigotry by misusing biblical passages, such as citing the curse of Ham to justify racial disparities. His stance aligns with a history of controversial statements on race and slavery, reflecting a supremacist view emphasizing the subjugation of Black people. The discussion delves into the effectiveness of MLK's nonviolent approach compared to Malcolm X's more militant stance, highlighting how MLK's pacifism made him more acceptable to the American public at the time. The panelists discuss the deep-rooted segregation within Christianity, tracing it back to historical divisions enforced by white supremacy. They reference figures like Absalom Jones, who founded the AME Church due to racial exclusion within white-dominated churches. The conversation extends to systemic racism's pervasive influence in society and the responsibility to challenge such narratives through education and advocacy.Throughout the discussion, panelists express a commitment to challenging bigotry and promoting inclusivity within religious spaces. They emphasize the importance of education, compassion, and self-reflection in combating racism and dismantling unjust systems. Despite acknowledging the challenges and exhaustion in confronting systemic racism, they encourage continued efforts to push back against unfairness and inequality. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.13.2 featuring Jimmy Jr., Blatant Blatheist , Cynthia McDonald and Kelley Laughlin

In a powerful rebuff, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris refused an invitation from Florida Governor Ron DeSantis for a conversation on Florida's revised Black history curriculum. DeSantis, a 2024 Republican presidential hopeful, had sought Harris' engagement following her disapproval of the state's new teaching guidelines. These guidelines Harris criticized seem to teach a revisionist history of slavery, emphasizing instances where enslaved people could develop skills for their benefit. She addressed a crowd in Orlando earlier this week at an AME Church event and said, "There is no round table, no lecture, no invitation we will accept to debate an undeniable fact. There were no redeeming qualities of slavery." So how will these tension-fueled exchanges between Harris and DeSantis impact the 2024 presidential race? Learn more about your ad choices. In 1793 a yellow fever epidemic almost destroyed Philadelphia. The young city was saved by two Black preachers, Richard Allen and Absalom Jones, who organized the free Black community in providing essential services and nursing the sick and dying. Allen and Jones were assured of two things: that stepping up would help them gain full equality and citizenship, and that they were immune to the disease. Neither promise turned out to be true. About Innate: How Science Invented the Myth of Race “Calamity in Philadelphia” is Episode 2 of Innate: How Science Invented the Myth of Race, a podcast and magazine project that explores the historical roots and persistent legacies of racism in American science and medicine. What life lessons can we learn from Rosa Parks beyond the bus? Today's esteemed guest, H.H. Leonards, relates insights she learned during the time Rosa Parks lived in her home. H.H. Leonards is a wife, mother of three, and founder of O Museum in The Mansion in Washington, DC, where Mrs. Rosa Parks, her friends, and business associates lived with her, at no cost, as part of The Mansion and O Museum's Heroes-In-Residence Program. Throughout her professional career, Leonards has focused on making it economically feasible for corporations to leverage their philanthropic contributions for their benefit—and the benefit of society. She has tirelessly worked to encourage companies and individuals to translate their personal visions into a mission of service. As a consultant to Ogilvy & Mather, she helped them create (and make real) cause-related marketing for their clients. A staunch advocate of social justice through music and storytelling, she is Co-Founder of 51StepsToFreedom.org, a non-profit organization that is developing a city-wide trail that traces America's struggle for equality and freedom. Leonards said she didn't initially recognize Rosa Parks as a civil rights figure, but instead took the 81-year-old guest into her home as someone who needed a place to recover from a horrific assault. Yet even before she learned Parks' historical role, the impact of Rosa's faith and character made a profound and unforgettable impression on H's life. Leonards shares the following ways Rosa Parks modeled a life of eternal resonance and wisdom: Rosa withdrew to heal before speaking publicly. Loving others remained her utmost priority in all she said and did, even including how she considered her appearance. Rosa exuded a powerful and nearly tangible presence of grace and love, even when silent. She cherished opportunities to enjoy moments of silence with others and listened beyond words to hear her neighbors' hearts. Parks exemplified the art and blessing of forgiveness impeccably. She taught everyone to live an exemplary life so that no one could use your past against you. Leonards notes that Rosa Parks' time is now, just as much as it was in 1950 when she refused to give up her seat on the bus. Leonards explained that Parks accomplished more in the final decade of her life than in all the years prior. Rosa learned to swim at age 90 and had children teach her to use a computer in her late 80's. Parks received the congressional medal of honor and the presidential and accepted them only in order to share her mission and vision. She fought for human rights, not just for a single group's rights. Rosa Parks fought for equality and unifying hearts upon common ground. She helped found the organization NOW for women. Rosa spent hours at church every Sunday and served as a deacon there. Rosa overflowed with humility and humanity. She invited people of all races to accompany her to her regular attendance at the AME Church. H related how others felt Rosa's love even when they didn't recognize her as a public figure. Rosa died penniless because she prioritized giving above her own comfort. She gave all she earned to others. Leonards describes not realizing Rosa Parks' historical significance for the first three years of residing with her as a blessing. She also did not recognize Willis Edwards, the gentleman who brought her to live there, as the head of the NAACP. H encourages listeners to adopt the message of Rosa Parks and become disciples of love and of Jesus. Living with Rosa Parks grew H as a disciple to the extent of stripping away unimportant things. Rosa modeled compassion and forgiveness. After surviving multiple assaults, Parks emerged with undiminished grace. Rosa demonstrated reliance upon faith to forgive when it would be impossible to do so in human strength. She refused to respond rashly, but carefully thought over her words and responses. When the driver of the bus passed away, the press asked Rosa about her reaction. Parks thought for a while and then stated she was sure his family misses him. Connect with H.H. Today's Daughter of Change, Marilyn Laken, is a woman who was ahead of her time in a male-dominated world - and with grit, determination, and a strategic mind - rose through the ranks of medical academia. After earning a BSN from the University of Md and a master's degree from Boston University in Maternal/Child Health Nursing.Marilyn, who enjoyed asking questions and experimenting with more effective ways to provide health care, decided to get a doctorate in biological anthropology to pursue an academic career with an emphasis on research. Health equity has always been a passion for Marilyn, so most of her academic work focused on how to improve access to quality health care for vulnerable populations such as low-income pregnant women and children, and members of the AME Church. This required working with state and national government agencies and Congress on laws and health policies to improve access to care and with professional organizations on changes in practice guidelines to better meet the needs of vulnerable women and children. Marilyn retired after working for 52 years and is now focused on learning more about the needs of aging people and identifying ways to reduce isolation and stimulate our brains.I'm excited to have the opportunity to converse with this wise woman who has helped to pave the way for the women who came after her. Cop Kills Congolese Immigrant, AME Church alleged $90M funds loss, Black Women & Sarcoidosis Eight years ago, the Lyoya family immigrated to the US to escape the violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, only to be faced with the violent killing of their son by a Grand Rapids, Michigan police officer. On today's program, we discuss financial abuse of the elderly. Some charity scams target old people, but there are things you can do to protect yourself and your family. A new law will require Christian ministries to file their Form 990s electronically. I'll explain why that's a good thing, but it won't solve the problems at the IRS. We begin today with new developments in the case of the AME Church's Retirement Funds. There's a new way to give to MinistryWatch. You can now give via text. I've got to admit that this is not my preferred way of giving, but I'm kind of old school. If this is your preferred way of giving, just text @ministrywatch to 52014. Again, that's @ministrywatch to 52014. I tried it myself, and it was pretty easy. So if I can do it, anyone can. Also: If you have a story you'd like us to cover, or a ministry that you think needs a closer look, please email us. Our email is info@155.138.219.249.
