Reality is the optimized solution for solving some federal problems involving artificial intelligence; other issues need to consider quantum. Today, Murray Thom puts the ability of quantum computing in a better perspective. For example, when it comes to aerospace maintenance, there are so many variables that classical computing is challenged to provide an answer. We all know that a traditional computer would use bits (0s and 1s). Quantum allows an approach that is not as linear and can provide faster answers to many questions. The crus of the interview was not a debate on the origins of quantum and Einstein's remark about God not throwing dice. The debate is over—quantum work. Quantum computing can help the federal government find solutions to public sector challenges like optimizing public services, transportation networks, and defense. The core of this interview is whether your federal agency is looking for a problem that is too expensive or too time-consuming to solve using classical computing. D-Wave is the latest company to claim that they have achieved quantum supremacy. In simple terms, according to Marin Ivezic, founder of Applied Quantum, D-Wave announced that its quantum annealing processor solved a problem that classical computers essentially cannot solve in any reasonable timeframe. Quantum annealing is a specialized approach to quantum computing that focuses on solving optimization and sampling problems by exploiting the natural tendencies of quantum systems, adds Ivezic. This is fundamentally different from gate-based (circuit-based) quantum computing, which is the model companies like Google, IBM, and others mostly pursue. Ivezic's blog, https://PostQuantum.com, reports that D-Wave's bold claim has naturally stirred debate in the quantum computing community. Dicen que, con un millón de qubits, se podrían analizar problemas complejos de química, ingeniería y hasta criptografía, logrando avances en medicamentos y en la creación de nuevos materiales. Microsoft afirma que su enfoque reduce drásticamente los errores que hoy frenan a la computación cuántica, y podrían alcanzar un rendimiento muy superior al de los líderes actuales. ¿Será este gran salto la clave para cambiar el futuro de la tecnología?Pero, a pesar del entusiasmo, la comunidad científica pide pruebas más sólidas  Los qubits son el corazón de las computadoras cuánticas, permitiendo procesar información de forma mucho más rápida que una computadora tradicional. Mientras que los bits de una computadora clásica pueden ser 0 o 1, los qubits pueden ser ambos al mismo tiempo, lo que les da una enorme ventaja en ciertos cálculos. Pero construir qubits estables es un reto. La más mínima interacción con el exterior puede alterar su estado y arruinar los cálculos. Hasta ahora, IBM y Google han liderado la carrera cuántica, pero su tecnología aún tiene muchos errores. Microsoft busca solucionar este problema con una nueva técnica.  Microsoft apuesta por los qubits topológicos, usando una partícula teórica predicha en 1937 por el físico italiano Ettore Majorana, quien propuso la existencia de fermiones que fueran su propia antipartícula. Esta partícula no ocurre naturalmente y solo se forma en materiales llamados superconductores topológicos, que deben estar a temperaturas cercanas al cero absoluto. La idea es que los qubits topológicos sean más estables porque almacenan información de forma protegida contra interferencias externas. Si funcionan como esperan, podrían eliminar muchos de los errores que hoy afectan a las computadoras cuánticas. Pero, aunque Microsoft ya publicó un artículo en Nature y presentó su hoja de ruta, la comunidad científica aún no ha verificado de manera independiente que el Majorana 1 logre todo lo que promete.  Microsoft asegura que su tecnología podría llevarnos a la computación cuántica escalable en "años, no décadas". Su objetivo es construir una computadora cuántica con un millón de qubits, lo que podría resolver problemas imposibles para las computadoras actuales. En respuesta, los mercados han reaccionado: las acciones de empresas de computación cuántica como D-Wave y Rigetti han subido más del 10%. Pero aún falta mucho. La historia de la computación cuántica está llena de promesas que tardan décadas en cumplirse. ¿Podrá Microsoft probar que su tecnología es realmente funcional y estable?  Este no es el primer intento de Microsoft en computación cuántica. Desde hace más de 20 años han investigado los qubits topológicos, pero los avances han sido lentos. Su gran apuesta ahora es el Majorana 1, un chip que, según ellos, permite almacenar información cuántica con menor error. Pero hay un problema: su diseño aún no resuelve todos los errores, especialmente el llamado T-gate, una operación cuántica esencial. Aunque su corrección sería más sencilla que la de otros sistemas, todavía es un reto pendiente. Además, para que el Majorana 1 se convierta en una computadora funcional, se necesitan miles de qubits funcionando en armonía. La pregunta es: ¿Microsoft podrá construir un sistema funcional antes que IBM o Google?  El Majorana 1 de Microsoft podría cambiar la computación cuántica, pero falta verificación independiente. Nvidia-baas Jensen Huang slaat de plank compleet mis met zijn voorspelling over de levensvatbaarheid van quantumtechnologie, stellen quantumbedrijven. Volgens de topman duurt het zeker nog 15 of zelfs 30 jaar voordat quantumtechnologie commercieel rendabel wordt, maar dat klopt dus niet volgens quantumbedrijven. Niels Kooloos vertelt erover in deze Tech Update. In een interview met CNBC vertelt topman Alan Baratz van quantumbedrijf D-Wave dat Huang 'dead wrong' is met zijn toekomstvoorspellingen over quantum. Hij nodigt hem daarom uit om er eens over te praten, zodat Huang zijn kennis over de technologie kan bijspijkeren. De koersen van quantumbedrijven stegen afgelopen jaren explosief nadat Google zijn nieuwste quantumchip, genaamd Willow, onthulde. Zo kreeg de koers van D-wave er 178 procent bij in december. Hoewel er deze week miljarden aan beurswaarde verdampt zijn door de uitspraak van Huang, noteert D-Wave nog steeds 600 procent hoger vergeleken met januari vorig jaar. El volumen ya está bajando en Bolsa y las sesiones empiezan a ser un poco aburridas. Today, we will attempt to clear up some of the questions listeners have about how to apply Quantum to federal problems. Our guest Murray Thom has been working with Quantum for years. Further, his company, D-Wave, has been in business for 25 years, has two hundred patents, and employs over two hundred subject matter experts. So, D-Wave is not a startup without any proven record. Murray sets the stage by setting up a contrast:  classical computing compared to quantum computing. Traditional computers allow for a limited number of answers, while a quantum computer is not limited to the binary nature of the way we have been using computers. Rather than diving into the philosophy and mathematics behind quantum, Murray looks at applications that can be boiled down to use cases. If you look at the millions of containers that enter the United States each year, you can understand the complex nature of logistics. Effective use of quantum can allow for reduced fuel consumption, faster delivery times, and happier customers. The federal government can apply this technology to areas like weather forecasting and even managing the 30,000 satellites that are projected to be circling the earth by 2030.
