This week, as we continue our look at pulp-heroes as part of our annual "Fantasy February", we're taking a look at the pulp hero who arguably started it all. The character who influenced everyone from Superman to The Shadow. This week we're looking at Doc Savage! More to the point, we're looking at the 1975 movie, Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze! In the film, which takes in the 1930's, Doc Savage (played by Ron Ely) and his five adventuring companions are drawn into the mystery of Doc's father disappearing in the wilds of South America. The maniacal Captain Seas tries to thwart them at every turn as they travel to the country of Hidalgo to investigate Doc's father's death and uncover a vast horde of Incan gold.

Michael Berryman has an unmistakable look that has served him well for decades in Hollywood. His one-of-a-kind face helped him land two gigs in the Star Trek universe, but his career is certainly one where you've seen the man plenty of times, and now you get to know his story. Berryman was a Starfleet communications officer in "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home," and then Captain Rixx in the first season "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode, "Conspiracy," where he played the first on-screen Bolian. Michael tells us about his early days, being discovered in an antique store by George Pal, his first gig in "Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze," stories from "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" with Jack Nicholson and Louise Fletcher, and the connection to the original Star Trek series with makeup artist Fred Phillips. From there, we discuss his time in Trek, the unique prosthetics he wore for those parts, spending time with Michael Westmore, and much more in this expansive career spotlighting the humble beginnings and explosive trajectory of the career of Michael Berryman. He's an adventurer and a hero with a keen mind that no criminal can defeat, he is Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (1975). Based on the pulp novel and comic book character from 1933, Doc Savage jumps off the page with rippling muscles, bronzed skin and ripped shirts in a camp adventure that is so weird and bizarre that the Invaders couldn't resist trying to remake it in this week's episode. If you ever wondered how gods are made, our guest today will tell you they start out as heroes. They become big enough to thrust out at Brad Pitt and decide the fate of thousands of women and children. Hector must have been like that… a giant like Priapus or Goliath standing in the way of Achilles. Probably a good sized lad. Maybe even 6 foot 4 and full of muscles. Our guest today is very much like this. She is larger than life and it makes sense that she married a Golden God like Derek Ireland and bore him two children. They used to make statues of people like them (think Venus de Milo). These two took a heroes journey that the rest of us just read about or gaze at in museums. Kristina Karitinou sits with us today and talks about her epic life story, including her true romance with Derek Ireland, nursing him through cancer, and her subsequent depression upon his death. The pain of this event along with their two small children, shaped the rest of her journey. Is there one of us in the Ashtanga Yoga culture more wrapped into the fabric of this legendary tapestry? Derek looms larger than life. He who practiced in Mysore, India wearing body, ankle, and wrist weights; he who ran up and down Chamundi Hill every morning like Lester Dent's “Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze!” (Russell's wouldn't have been surprised at all to find Doc Savage practicing Ashtanga Yoga next to Derek and Kristina in a cave on the island of Crete, recovering from some epic adventure). The Ashtanga yoga practice is a method that brings the maximum beauty to both the male and female body. - Kristina Karitinou Kristina is an Ashtanga Yoga teacher and Zen practitioner from Athens, Greece, who's been teaching in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois since 1991. She was qualified as an Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga teacher by her late husband Derek Ireland, authorized by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and Certified by his son, Manju Pattabhi Jois in 2012. After many years of assisting Derek Ireland around the world, Kristina became one of the first Ashtanga yoga teachers in Europe. In this episode we have special guest, Chuck Welch, who has spent the last 25 years bringing together fans of the pulp fiction character Doc Savage through The Hidalgo Trading Company website and the Flearun Facebook group. When he isn't discussing Doc Savage online he edits the Bronze Gazette, a magazine devoted to Doc Savage. Pre-COVID, Chuck hosted an annual convention for Doc Savage fans called the Bronze CONversation. In 2020, like many other activities, the CONversation was held virtually. He'll tell you he's not the world's foremost expert on Doc, but he is thrilled to host opportunities for those experts and fans to get together to discuss the fiction they fell in love with. Codex is joined by comedian Peter-john Byrnes to burn it all to the ground (hypothetically). You can find the book online and at the local Bronco dealership. If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer by OJ Simpson Get the full story in O.J. Simpson’s own words! On July 31, 2007 Federal Court Judge A. Jay Cristol awarded the Goldman family the rights to If I Did It. Thus began one of the strangest odysseys in publishing history. The book, called “one of the most chilling things I have ever read” by Barbara Walters, skyrocketed up bestseller lists across the country in fall 2007 as the national media relentlessly covered O.J. Simpson’s dramatic Las Vegas arrest for armed robbery and kidnapping. Originally written by O.J. Simpson, this edition includes essays by the Goldmans and a member of the Goldman family legal team that reveal the fascinating story behind the bankruptcy case, the book’s publication and the looming court proceedings, that would eventually lead to his conviction. In 1994, Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson were brutally murdered at her home in Brentwood, California. O.J. Simpson was tried for the crime in a case that captured the attention of the American people, but was ultimately acquitted of criminal charges. The victims' families brought a civil case against Simpson, which found him liable for willfully and wrongfully causing the deaths of Ron and Nicole committing battery with malice and oppression. In 2006, HarperCollins announced the publication of a book in which O.J. Simpson told how he hypothetically would have committed the murders. In response to public outrage that Simpson stood to profit from these crimes, HarperCollins canceled the book. The Goldman family views the book as his confession, and has worked hard to ensure that the public will read this book and learn the truth. This is O.J. Simpson's original manuscript, approved by him, with up to 14,000 words of additional key commentary. Nat, Cody, and Robert have no fear, because Doc Savage is here. Once again the Still Watching the Skies crew shows their bravery, intelligence, and superior upbringing by grappling with films that lesser podcasts wouldn't touch. That's right, this month we're on an adventurous undertaking with 1975's DOC SAVAGE: THE MAN OF BRONZE.
We look at the year 1975 in film this week... besides Jaws... what other films debuted this year? The good (A Boy and His Dog, Cleopatra Jones and the Casino of Gold, The Devil's Rain and Monty Python and the Holy Grail among others) and the bad (Barry Lyndon, Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze, The Happy Hooker and The Stepford Wives among others). It was a turbulent year and one that marked the start of a new era in hollywood. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiodrome/support

In this episode, Mike Toole and I review Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze -- quite possibly the Greatest Movie EVER!
Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (1975) is reviewed this week in an effort to better understand the origins of Buckaroo Banzai and patriotism in general. Plus we are shown how to make a room full of people join in on your evil laugh. Second half we forgo voicemails and instead talk at length about […]
Ely won the role of Tarzan in 1966 after playing supporting roles in films such as South Pacific (1958), as an airplane navigator, The Fiend Who Walked the West (1958) and The Remarkable Mr. Pennypacker (1959).[citation needed]During the filming of Tarzan, Ely did virtually all of his stunts for the series,[3] and suffered two dozen major injuries in the process, including two broken shoulders and various lion bites.[4]Ely's height (6'4") and athletic build also won him the title role in the film Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze (1975), as well as various guest shots. He was in five episodes of the series Fantasy Island; in one, in 1978, Ely portrayed Mark Antony in a Roman military short tunic and breastplate. Also in 1978, Ely starred in the Wonder Woman television series two-part episode "The Deadly Sting."[citation needed]Ely starred on the series The Aquanauts in 1960–1961, in the western adventure film The Night of the Grizzly (1966) opposite Clint Walker, and later appeared in Jürgen Goslar's slavery movie Slavers (1978). In the 1980s, he hosted the musical game show Face the Music, as well as the 1980 and 1981 Miss America Pageants, replacing longtime host Bert Parks.[5] Later in the decade, Ely starred in a 1987–1988 revival of the 1960s adventure series Sea Hunt as Mike Nelson, the role played by Lloyd Bridges in the original series.[citation needed]In the 1990s, Ely’s roles included a retired Superman from an alternative reality in the 1991 two-part episode "The Road to Hell" of the Superboy syndicated television series, and a big game hunter named Gordon Shaw in the 1992 episode "Tarzan the Hunted" of the syndicated Tarzán TV series (starring Wolf Larson). Until about 2001, Ely made appearances on such television shows as Sheena and Renegade.[citation needed]Ely had retired from acting in 2001, but he returned to acting with an appearance in the television movie Expecting Amish (2014).[
