Prayer is the door we enter to discover God's heart of unending grace and the home we have always wanted. The place where we can crawl into our Father's lap and find our purpose. In today's episode we are leaning into a topic that is foundational to our lives as followers of Jesus and that is PRAYER. It's through prayer where we learn to trust that God has immeasurably more for us through His Son Jesus. As I am watching God grow and develop this dream He put on my heart through Rise Collective Women, He continues to teach me so much about the power of prayer and the gift of communicating with Him. If you struggle with prayer, find yourself doubting the effectiveness of prayer, or want to know if God even hears you when you pray, this conversation will encourage you today. Dr. Derwin L. Gray joins the conversation today to talk about what prayer is and to help us lay a theological foundation for our understanding. Dr. Gray is the founding and lead pastor of Transformation Church, a multiethnic, multigenerational, mission-shaped community just south of Charlotte, North Carolina. He has written several books, including the bestselling The Good Life and most recently God, Do You Hear Me?. Links from the show! Derwin's book God, Do You Hear Me? Friend of the show Derwin Gray has a new book! When did he have time to write it? We don't know! But he also found time to sit down with Skye and talk about it. Derwin says the Lord's Prayer isn't just a prayer, but an entire catechism of faith, a lesson in communing with God, and a call for the people of God to engage in issues of justice. He unpacks it all with Skye. And did scientists find the biblical city of Sodom? Have psychologists found the number one predictor of atheism? How do we move from a homogenous church or group to one that welcomes full participation of people from different ethnicities? Why is it so important for churches to reflect their communities and be ethnically integrated as a reflection of the full Gospel? What can we do in our small groups to help create safe spaces for people to discuss issues related to ethnicity and socioeconomic differences as part of our discipleship? Listen as Dr. Derwin Gray envisions and calls churches to "grow out of ignorance, classism, racism, and greed into the flourishing, vibrant, and grace-filled communities of believers that God intended." My guest for this Encounter episode is Dr. Derwin Gray. Dr. Derwin Gray is the pastor of the multiethnic, multigenerational church Transformation Church in South Carolina. In this show, Derwin tells us about his childhood growing up around violence and trauma, and how he used football as an escape from the things around him. While playing in the professional league, a teammate of his (nicknamed “The Naked Preacher”) shared the Gospel with him in the locker room. It was at that point that the wheels began to turn in his mind and he committed his life to Christ, having no background of Christianity whatsoever. From that moment on, Derwin's life was forever changed. He says “For the first time in my life I felt loved, and the love was not a love I earned. It was a love I was given.” For the full summary and links to the show, click the link below! About Derwin Gray: Derwin met his wife, Vicki, at Brigham Young University. He played for the BYU Cougars football team. They have been married since 1992 and have two children. After graduating from Brigham Young University, Derwin played professional football in the NFL for five years with the Indianapolis Colts (1993-1997) and one year with the Carolina Panthers (1998). During that time, he and Vicki began their journey with Christ and experienced God’s faithfulness and direction as He moved their hearts to know Him and make Him known. Derwin and Vicki began an itinerant speaking ministry in 1999, One Heart At A Time Ministries. Derwin went on to graduate magna cum laude from Southern Evangelical Seminary with a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree, with a concentration in Apologetics, where he was mentored by renowned theologian and philosopher, Dr. Norman Geisler. Following God’s call on their lives and their desire to shepherd people towards transforming their world through the mission of Christ, the Lord transitioned Derwin from his primary role of itinerant speaker to serving as the Lead Pastor of Transformation Church in January of 2010. Coupling his dynamic speaking style with a shepherd’s heart, his intense passion for seeing lives and culture transformed is both contagious and inspiring. In 2015, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Southern Evangelical Seminary. In 2018, he received his Doctor of Ministry in the New Testament in Context at Northern Seminary under Dr. Scot McNight. Lamenting the way things are is tied to longing for the way things ought to be. In addition to lamenting the state of the sin-infected world, Christians should long for a world cured by the gospel, a world completely invaded by the kingdom of God in Christ. Before a person can be on mission, living in and for God’s kingdom, they must lament the idolatry and injustice of the world. This pain, seen in the light of the cross, sends us into our purpose. Out of a broken heart, we cry out to God, and his comforting grace moves us to be comforters.Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ overflow to us, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. (2 Cor. 1:3–5)The good life is found lamenting the brokenness of the world, longing for the way things ought to be, and helping God make others’ lives better.Jesus lamented the state of things as they were. He was the happiest person to ever live, yet he was still called “a man of sorrows” (Isa. 53:3 NLT). Lament was not absent from Jesus’ life. He can relate to us in every way.

Daughters of Darkness features a stunning cover and four authors; Stephanie Ellis, Alyson Faye, Theresa Derwin, Ruschelle Dillon. Plus! At the end of the video I have an update on the grand giveaway happening at @darkbetweenpages : https://youtu.be/RUZiWU7V8ro Conjure a copy of Daughters of Darkness: https://amzn.to/39izht4 00:00 - Introduction 4:01 - Francois Vaillancourt 4:39 - Theresa Derwin 5:33 - Ruschelle Dillon 6:19 - Stephanie Ellis, 7:44 - Alyson Faye 9:53 - The Giveaway! The last time I read a book that I can recall that involved more than one author as a short story collection was Triage featuring Jack Ketchum Edward Lee and Richard Laymon. it was fantastic and I don't have a copy anymore - had I known then what I know now I'd have hung onto it as it is hard to come by. Daughters of Darkness, on the other hand, is a fresh release that came out in February of this year so 2021 and it came out in the very middle of women in horror month, so I'm a little behind on my review. This was a graciously gifted review copy from Ruschelle Dillon, one of the authors featured here and who you may recall from a previous new releases video with her book of the stain and she had also equally graciously interviewed me for the horror tree 2 years ago. Also featured in this book are Stephanie Ellis, Alyson Faye, and Theresa Derwin. So, we have a group of four women writers who specialize in horror of varying kinds in one book. From the back cover: A quartet of established female horror writers from both sides of the Atlantic have joined supernatural forces to bring you - Daughters of Darkness - a publication from the women-run indie press Black Angel. These stories will take you across the centuries, from Whitechapel to New Orleans, from dark humour to Gothic, weaving the weird with the macabre. Within these pages, meet the myriad monsters these female writers have conjured, letting them loose to roam and cast long shadows. The gorgeous cover as mentioned I absolutely adore and it was designed by Francois Vaillancourt who is Canadian and you may recognize from many other books covers an author's if you're out there he often designs covers and then has them up for commission beautiful at work and of course on my list of things to achieve the cover by Francois Vallencourt. A fantastic collection that I do recommend if you are not familiar with these authors or just want to line your shelf with some really nice dark female offerings. I hope to see more of this being that this could be an annual tradition it would be really cool, or just more collections with more than one story by each author. I'd be very interested in collections like that as opposed to the traditional anthology. There comes a point when our faith has grown strong enough that we can turn outward and put it to work serving those who need it most. Gary Sinise comes from a long legacy of supporting the military, from brave family members who served as far back as World War I, to portraying wounded Vietnam vet Lt. Dan Taylor in the iconic movie Forrest Gump. After the events of 9/11, Gary was inspired to find more ways to serve those who sacrificed for our nation, which he details in his book Grateful American. Dr. Derwin Gray created a successful life for himself in the NFL, desperate to escape the dysfunction that surrounded him in childhood. But after achieving his career dreams, Derwin realized he wouldn’t ever be satisfied without a greater purpose. He bravely stepped into God’s calling for his life and founded Transformation Church, a multi-ethnic church seeking to help others live a Jesus-centered life—what Dr. Gray calls in his new book The Good Life. These two men have grown their faith and been encouraged by the people they serve, and they demonstrate the beautiful things that can happen when we use our gifts and talents to bless those around us. And I just felt compelled and called in a certain way to serve. And so you go from this singular focus on self to this broader focus on serving others.” - Gary Sinise “I am a grateful American. I'm grateful for so many things.” - Gary Sinise “Having veterans in my family, having been involved with supporting Vietnam veterans, I just knew where I was going to employ my services, and it was going to be to help our men and women get through the next phase of deploying to the war zones and helping them and their families get through that. And that just that lit a fire under me.” - Gary Sinise “The more I got active, the more I gave, the more I healed, the more I wanted to do.” - Gary Sinise “I've seen the needs in all these different places and I want to try to continue to help fill those needs.” - Gary Sinise “When Jesus called me, when Jesus loved me, when Jesus met me, He literally put things in me and brought gifts out of me that I didn’t even know was possible.” - Dr. Derwin Gray “By my third year in the NFL at age twenty-five, I said ‘There's got to be more to life than this.’” - Dr. Derwin Gray “It was like I was chasing my shadow and I finally caught it, but realized it went right through my hands, and I was looking for things that only Jesus can give.” - Dr. Derwin Gray “He gave me unconditional love. He gave me a new identity: beloved child of God. He gave me a new purpose, and that is to know Him and to make Him known through every facet of my life.” - Dr. Derwin Gray “Jesus's blood not only forgives our sins, but He gives us a family with different colored skins.” - Dr. Derwin Gray ”So often we are so self-sufficient that we can't be God sufficient. So often we're so centered upon ourselves that we can't be Jesus-centered.” - Dr. Derwin Gray ________________________ Enjoy these videos on Jesus Calling YouTube channel: Audio podcast: https://bit.ly/2uCnNM0 Original Series video podcast: https://bit.ly/2WzFY0O ________________________ Connect with Jesus Calling Instagram Facebook Twitter Pinterest YouTube Jesus Calling Website
