Executive Director of Visit Pella Ann Frost and Trish Klok with the Kerstmarkt committee discuss the Christmas Tour of Homes and Dutch Christmas market coming Nov. 30th through Dec. 2nd.
Christmas is that time of the year where Dutch families often gather around the dining table. Some will prepare an extensive 5-course dinner, while others 'gaan gourmetten'. With Nicole Holten from The Dutch Table, we discuss some typical Dutch Christmas dishes.
Ann Frost and Lowell Olivier-Shaw with Visit Pella discuss the expansion of the Dutch Christmas market, Kerstmarkt.

77 years ago, in Nazi-occupied Holland, a Dutch Christmas tradition became a brush with disaster for then 6-year-old Anita Frank, whose memories haunt her to this day.
In this episode, I will be discussing a Dutch Christmas tradition and its association with Zwarte Piet, or Black Pete in English. This character is based on anti-Black stereotypes and involves the use of blackface. This episode aims to examine this specific tradition within a larger context of Dutch colonization throughout the Atlantic World and also considers Black experiences in the Netherlands today. Joining me is my Humanity in Action fellow, Valerie Ntinu.
Brad de Raad took a cooking class in San Francisco last year and it opened his eyes to new techniques and recipes. He's enjoyed baking different kinds of bread and has especially enjoyed baking pumpkin bread during the fall season. In this episode, Brad and I discuss his newfound interest in cooking and baking, we give an overview of our breakfast at a famous bakery called Tartine, and we dive into Brad's family traditions - including buying Dutch Christmas bread every year from a Dutch bakery in Pasadena, California.

...a rant about their old alma mater, Sunderland Uni! Second day of podmas is here and just for you we...basically rant and bitch about our university and general policies regarding graduation in the UK, but especially ours! Alex didn't bother attending his graduation, but Maggie did and she has plenty to say on the topic! Xmas Ruf - In the Netherlands, Sinterklaas (the Dutch version of Santa Claus) arrives from Spain, not from the North Pole. And that’s not the only weird thing about the Dutch Christmas. Sinterklaas has his little helpers, but they are not adorable hard-working elves: they are black-faced boys and girls who can steal your kids if they misbehave, and bring them to back Spain which is, according to the Dutch, a severe punishment. No Terry this week, so there's more waffle than a Dutch Christmas market stall and a lot less factual boxing chat. Although, there's also not endless anecdotes about fights in the 70's, fights in darkest Tajikistan and no 40 minute AOB section at the end, so swings and roundabouts - get well soon big Tel! We chat about everything in the title so read that again for the content information. Get in touch with your questions: @newageboxinguk @newagepodfather @highfieldboxing

The debate around Zwarte Piet – Black Pete – has been raging in the Netherlands for several years. Is the character a black-face racist stereotype or just a harmless Dutch tradition? Positions are entrenched – with supporters and opponents clashing sometimes hysterically. Many in Dutch society are simply stunned as to what’s happened around what is a treasured family holiday and celebration. At one stage the UN even got involved. But what does the international community in the Netherlands make of all this? Here in Holland dives into the debate. From all of us at both Triple D Mining Company, and Dillon and Dutch Metal Detecting... MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.
Black Peter or Zwarte Piet: is it a beloved Dutch Christmas character or a racist throwback to the minstrel tradition? Quinsy Gario, a media expert from the Dutch Island St. Maarten, didn't think much of it until his mother was called “Zwarte Piet”. Then he launched a public campaign to end the tradition that led to a police beating, death threats and a national debate and led him to being, for a few months, the most hated man in The Netherlands. Yes, Maureen and Jen deludedly continue with these podcasts. Back on Jen's sofa - the ladies discuss the important issues of the day like a dodgy Dutch Christmas tradition, the likelihood of Jen 'turning' Babs Windsor and Crosse & Blackwell soup. WILD TIMES.
