Wendy Smith is an award-winning business professor at the University of Delaware, where she also serves as Co-director of the Women's Leadership Initiative. Wendy's research focuses on strategic paradoxes – how leaders and senior teams effectively respond to contradictory agendas. Her research has been published in top-tier academic journals and her book, Both/And Thinking, was published by Harvard Business School Press in 2022. Wendy earned her Ph.D. in organizational behavior at Harvard Business School. In this episode we discuss the following: When we view our challenges through an either/or lens, we limit our options, often leading to suboptimal decisions. Both/and thinking, on the other hand, enhances creativity leading to better outcomes. Take fairness, for example. Some argue it means treating everyone the same. Others believe it requires treating people differently to ensure comparable outcomes. Both views have merit and represent a classic paradox. And this is where Wendy's process if helpful. First, notice the paradox, notice the either/or. And then change the frame to see if we can accomplish both. Is there a win/win that allows us to do both right now? I love Wendy's mule analogy here—the mule, a hybrid of horse and donkey, represents the power of combining two different paths. And if we can't do both at once, maybe we can do both over time. Wendy's tightrope metaphor was excellent. A tightrope walker stays balanced by making continuous, slight adjustments as they move forward. If we stick to either/or thinking we risk getting trapped, incapable of adapting when context changes. 'When I first started, people were like, "Don't say the word paradox... don't say it because they won't get it." And now people are like, "Oh my goodness, I need this."' When it's a case of scarce resources - as it always seems to be, right? - our default thinking is Either/Or. Either I spend time on this project, or I prioritise my family. Either I work on delivering today's priorities, or I focus on planning for tomorrow. But Professor Wendy Smith would like you to consider a different way of thinking: Both/And. Life is essentially paradoxical, and she argues that the best way to navigate all the competing demands on our time successfully is to understand their interdependence. In an increasingly complex world, navigating tensions creatively can lead to better, more inclusive solutions - and this applies to personal life just as much as professional life. There are certainly times when that's the case, but it's also true that leaders going too slow at the wrong time can make things worse. While almost every organization espouses the importance of employees, few executive leaders can identify who “owns” the employee experience in their organization. In contrast, almost every organization has a clearly defined customer experience owner. Proper investments in technology are often an obstacle to an ideal employee experience. Getting better at this means that senior leaders in human resources, information technology, and customer experience must work together to help impact line up with intention. Three starting points for better employee experience are: reviewing data for customer experience and compare it to the trends for employee experience, utilizing employee advisory boards for a voice in emerging strategy, and reviewing employee survey results to determine what findings have been addressed. Getting better at balancing customer experience and employee experience means moving away from an expert's mindset and towards a beginner's mindset.
