Ben and Erik are joined all the way from Beiruit by independent journalist Séamus Malekafzali (@seamus_malek) to get a firsthand report of a week where Israel only continues to ramp up regional aggression and murder civilians (and journalists, and humanitarian aid workers). Together, we talk about the twin assassinations by Israel that sparked a response from Hezbollah while Iran continues to leave us all guessing. We also talk Sinwar hiding in women's clothes (?), Rape Rebellion vets on the Israeli talk show circuit, Judith Miller, polio, and grim future plans for Egypt & Jordan. All that, plus US CENTOM goes looking for love in all the right places. Check out Sèamus' excellent substack: https://www.seamus-malekafzali.com/ And stay tuned some more fun guests as we celebrate the build up to the 3 (!!) year anniversary of us starting the show. Thanks as always for listening, some exciting news will be coming soon!

Since 1948, the relationship between Israel and its arab neighbours has gone from open hostility, to accommodation and collaboration. I spoke to Abdel Razzaq Takriti, Chair in Modern Arab History at the University of Houston, about Egypt and Jordan's role in the Israel-Palestine conflict, and how that can inform our understanding of the current Gaza War. Dina Hassan (Lecturer, Modern Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics, University of Oklahoma, USA) speaks with Nicola Pratt (Associate Professor, International Politics of the Middle East, University of Warwick, UK) about Pratt's recent book, Embodying Geopolitics: Generations of Women's Activism in Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon (University of California Press, 2020). Waves of protests drew women and men, young and old across the Middle East into the streets to demonstrate against authoritarian regimes during 2011. Nicola Pratt's sweeping new monograph provides essential context for the gendered significance of that activism. In over one hundred oral histories with activists, Pratt locates the long roots and diverse aims of women's participation in anticolonial and egalitarian movements in Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon from the 1950s to the present day. Grappling with the legacies of state feminism in Egypt or vibrant voluntary societies in Jordan requires scholars develop analytical tools attuned to the dynamism of gender relations over the past century. Join us for a conversation that connects the personal and the political across time, national borders, and political affiliations. Interested in further resources? Hi guys! I'm back on my shit. Please check out my new episode, it's about something 10 people in the world fully understand and I'm not one of them. Basically, everybody wants to be the peanut butter in the Egypt/Jordan sammie --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/curiousqueen/support
Back to reality...sort of! After our whirlwind trip to Egypt/Jordan and now that the holidays are over, we are back to business. But business still means traveling around the US full time for work! Natalee and Jarek talk about whats on our must do winter bucket list. We also discuss all the weird things Natalee has eaten in her life!
Whew! We are finally back from our Egypt/Jordan trip! This might be a 5 part series because we have so much to talk about. We only made it through our first 48 hours in Egypt in this podcast. From The Pyramids, to camel rides, to a Nubian village, we hope you enjoy!
We decided to get a podcast in before we travel to Egypt and Jordan for 3 weeks. Only problem is we did it kind of late after a long day of eating so what resulted was maybe not our most energetic podcast. We still go into how we are preparing for our upcoming trip and we talk a little bit about Thanksgiving itself. Hope you enjoy!
