The Gaza Ceasefire Part 2: Trump and Israel's plans

After nearly 16 months of genocide, Palestinians saw a long-awaited respite when a ceasefire was announced in mid-January. But while the bombs have stopped raining down on Gaza—for now—Israel's attacks on Palestinians across occupied lands continue. With only 42 days of ceasefire guaranteed, Israeli politicians are already plotting their return to war while escalating settler and state violence in the West Bank. This is the second episode in a three-part series in collaboration with Mondoweiss and Al-Shabaka, the Palestine Policy Network, where we explore what happens next and what the future of Palestine looks like. We'll dive into Hamas's vision for the “day after” in Gaza, the Palestinian Authority's struggle for power and legitimacy, and what Israel stands to gain—or lose—in the process. In this episode, we turn to Washington, where, in the third week of a fragile ceasefire, U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Israeli Prime Minister—and wanted war criminal—Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House. As Israeli officials were preparing for ceasefire negotiations in Qatar, Trump and Netanyahu sent an entirely different message: Trump declared that the U.S. would "own Gaza" and turn it into the Riviera of the Middle East—a statement widely condemned as a call for ethnic cleansing. To unpack these statements, their deeper implications, and what they reveal about the future of Gaza, we're joined by Palestinian human rights lawyer, analyst, and Al-Shabaka policy member, Diana Buttu. Too soon for a truce? Israel downplays push for ceasefire with Hezbollah

The Debate

Ceasefire or all-out war? While Israel's prime minister headed to UN Week in New York, his office stated that Binyamin Netanyahu had not even started considering a Franco-American plan for a 21-day truce with Hezbollah. Word of the plan was greeted with immediate pushback from hawks within Netanyahu's right-wing cabinet. As Israeli jets continue to pound Lebanon, as top brass talk up the potential for a ground invasion, Hezbollah and its main backer Iran are more circumspect: they are still reeling from last week's exploding electronic devices and the killing of three of the militant group's top commanders. They would gladly consider an all-in-one US plan to wind up fighting both in Gaza and on Lebanon's border. The question remains: what are Israel's goals going forward? Has it weakened Hezbollah enough? Has it restored an aura of regional might that first teetered with its inconclusive 2006 war with Hezbollah and then shattered last October 7 when Hamas attacked from Gaza? Can a prime minister who probably faces an inquiry over Gaza when the guns go silent keep up a perpetual state of war? And is Lebanon doomed to forever remain a battleground for all the region's proxy wars?Produced by Alessandro Xenos, Rebecca Gnignati and Mélissa Kalaydjian.

(He sure covers a lot of ground in less than a week.) Their concerns are not much different from those that preoccupy Israelis: Hostages. Civilian casualties and humanitarian suffering in the Gaza Strip. Israel's disunity, which is becoming more apparent as the immediate shock factor of October 7th recedes. And the escalating tension in Israel over the continuing exemption for ultra-orthodox men from serving in the army. There has been much talk in Israel in recent weeks and it is becoming louder. As Israeli military operations continue in Gaza, Democratic Senator. Chris Van Hollen on Sunday said the Biden administration is not being heeded in its entreaties for Israel to reduce the civilian death toll. "I don't think it's getting through clearly enough because we continue to see unacceptably high levels of civilian casualties.” Van Hollen told ABC "This Week" co-anchor Jonathan Karl. The Maryland lawmaker, who serves on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, acknowledged there had recently been some positive developments, such as Israel opening an important border crossing into the territory -- but "it shouldn't take this long." The recent violence in the Jenin refugee camp was a shocking and violent development. The incursion left 12 dead, over a hundred wounded, and a trail of destruction to infrastructure that will make life in the camp even more difficult. As Israeli soldiers made their way through the camp, Palestine activists in London took to the streets to express their anger and opposition to the events in the West Bank, and to the British government's relationship with the government in Israel. This week on The New Arab Voice we look at the state of Palestine activism is the UK. What are Palestine activists doing to get their message across? Are they seeing any success? How might legislation like the 'Anti-Boycott Bill' effect the work of Palestine activists? And should the movement seek greater cooperation with the UK government. The struggle for Palestine in the UK is ongoing, but there is a precedent in the country for successful campaigns. The former apartheid regime in South Africa was an appalling crime, and during the life of this regime, campaigns in the UK, through intense efforts, manage to raise awareness and effect real change in South Africa, via the UK. ("Firm Foundation Inspiration Minute" is a weekly encouragement sent by text on Wednesdays to supporters of New Covenant Church and Dr. Bryan Hudson.  Subscribe to this blog to get connected.) All of what we hope for tomorrow, begins today. Joshua prepared Israel to cross the Jordan River. This was the second time they faced a barrier of water. First was the Red Sea after their exodus from Egypt. They miraculously crossed over with great joy, but they soon fell into bad habits. By the time Moses wrote the book of Deuteronomy, which was the last of his five books called the Pentateuch, he was very aware of Israel's failure after the Red Sea miracle.   In that last book, Moses wrote about people focusing on God and doing His will "today" over 160 times. Looking back, I think Moses realized that the people's hope for tomorrow was not met with preparation today. After Moses died, God raised up Joshua. As Israeli faced their second barrier of water, the Jordan River, we find Joshua giving them instructions today, before crossing over the next day. Joshua said, “Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.” (Joshua 3:5) God has prepared you for every challenge and opportunity in front of you. Today is your tomorrow because what you do today determines your success tomorrow.   God Bless and Be Encouraged! ~ Bryan Hudson

As Israeli security forces continued their attacks against Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem, the Biden Administration came under renewed criticism for failing to take a firm stance against the Israeli government. Leading congressional members of the Democratic Party condemned Israel's use of force and efforts to forcibly displace Palestinian families in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem. Senator Bernie Sanders said “the United States must speak out strongly against the violence by government-allied Israeli extremists in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, and make clear that the evictions of Palestinian families must not go forward”. Senator Elizabeth Warren also called on the Biden Administration to speak out against Israel's' efforts to forcibly displace Palestinians: “the forced removal of long-time Palestinians residents in Sheikh Jarrah is abhorrent and unacceptable. The Administration should make clear to the Israeli government that these evictions are illegal and must stop immediately.” Several other Democratic members of Congress called on the Biden Administration to stand up for the rights of Palestinian families and urge the Israeli government to stop its evictions, calling the violence against Palestinians ‘completely unacceptable.' As Israeli violence against Palestinians in occupied East Jerusalem heats up amid looming evictions of Palestinian families in Sheikh Jarrah and Israeli police storming the al Aqsa mosque, Rania Khalek is joined by investigative journalist David Sheen from Haifa for insight into the Israeli side of the equation. Israeli Jewish extremism has been on the rise for years, explains David, with the religious Zionist movement gaining power in government and in the streets. Their messianic movement wants to demolish the Al Aqsa mosque and build a third Jewish temple in its place. They want to ethnically cleanse Palestinians from all of historic Palestine. They want a theocracy. And Netanyahu has empowered them to maintain his own diminishing power. Why is this happening now? What are the Israeli political divisions and machinations driving the violence? What's behind the Israeli lurch to the religious far right? And is there any chance for reversing these developments? Or are Palestinians trapped at the mercy of an increasingly genocidal Israeli politics with zero obstacles to carrying out their apocalyptic vision?

Plus...The grandson of one of the victims of Mahmoud Abbas' palestinian massacre of the Israeli Team at the Munich Olympics in 1972 is beaten in an anti-semitic attack in Germany...
