Today… we're going skiing! And we're doing it in style in France, Switzerland, Italy, and other European destinations. I wanted to pull together this episode not only because skiing in Europe is an amazing cultural experience, but also because it's looking pretty darn good from a value perspective right now. The Euro and Dollar are currently on par and lift tickets and lessons are massively cheaper in Europe than in the US. Our guests today are the brother and sister team, Rick Reichsfeld and Richelle Blanken. The duo grew up skiing competitively, both raced in college, and then Richelle even raced in the Olympics. When Richelle left the national team - brother and sister teamed up to find a way to make a living from helping others experience the joy of skiing and the duo are our partners in planning amazing ski trips around the world for Bell & Bly Travel clients. We discuss everything from Michelin starred mountain food, to unique lifts across Europe, to the most luxurious resorts, spas, and even non-skiing winter activities. Sit back with a cup of hot chocolate or a glass of champagne, and enjoy this episode of Luxury Travel Insider. Learn more at www.luxtravelinsider.com Connect with me on Social: Instagram LinkedIn

Winter can be a sleepy time at the National Parks on Lake Superior, but at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore near Munising, Michigan, visitors come to snowmobile, mush dogs, snowshoe, fish and cross-country ski. But the biggest event to bring folks into the park is the Michigan Ice Fest. In this episode of the Lake Superior Podcast, Walt Lindala and Frida Waara talk with Ice Fest organizer Bill Thompson about the event and what makes Pictured Rocks such a Mecca for the sport. Key Takeaways:The Michigan Ice Fest has grown from a small gathering in 1991 to an internationally recognized event, drawing over 1,100 participants from 38 states and seven countries.Ice climbing at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore offers a one-of-a-kind experience, with ice formations over open water that can't be found anywhere else in the world.Ice Fest caters to all skill levels, from beginners as young as eight to seasoned climbers, with professional athletes providing instruction and inspiration at the event.Even in warmer winters with limited ice, the festival continues as an educational and community event, showcasing presentations and fostering camaraderie. The event's unique location, accessibility, and passionate community make it a cornerstone of adventure tourism in Munising, Michigan.Notable Quotes:“With the advent of social media and a few professional athletes spreading the word, there's nowhere in the world that you can go ice climbing over open water, with crashing waves and the beauty of Lake Superior.”“Ice climbing is a sport for anyone looking to go out, have an adventure, and try something new.”“Ice climbing takes you places that not a lot of people in this world can get to.”“Our safety system is really thought out. Instead of focusing on, ‘Oh man, I'm high,' I'm focusing on the ice in front of me. You have all of these interesting patterns of ice, you can hear the water trickling behind it, so the sounds are very unique. It's just really, really special."Resources:Michigan Ice Fest Website (michiganicefest.com) – Learn more about the event, clinics, and presentations.Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore (www.nps.gov/piro/index.htm) – Explore the beauty of this unique park.Ice Climbing Safety and Equipment (michiganicefest.com/information/festival-planning/safety/) – Better nderstand the gear and precautions used at the festival.Connect With Us:Website: (nplsf.org/podcast)Facebook: (facebook.com/NPLSF)LinkedIn: (linkedin.com/company/national-parks-of-lake-superior-foundation)Sponsors:Cafe Imports: Supporting environmental sustainability in coffee-growing regions since 1993. Aloha, and welcome to another Hawaii Vacation Connection podcast, hosted by Bruce Fisher, aka Aloha Bruce. As we transition into the winter season in Hawaii, it's a good time to reflect on what these seasonal changes mean for your vacation plans. Though Hawaii is known for its consistent tropical climate, the islands do experience two distinct seasons: summer and winter. Let's dive into what sets them apart and how you can make the most of your Hawaiian getaway this winter. Understanding Hawaii's Two Seasons: Winter and Summer Unlike the traditional four-season climate, Hawaii experiences just two primary seasons: summer (kau) and winter (hooilo). While the temperature difference is relatively small, there are noticeable changes in weather patterns and tourism trends. Winter typically runs from October to April, bringing cooler temperatures, increased rainfall, and the return of the beloved trade winds. This year, weather forecasts predict a wetter-than-average season due to a La Niña pattern, which is expected to bring more rain, especially on the windward sides of the islands. While some may worry about the impact of rain on their vacation, Aloha Bruce advises that winter is still a great time to visit. The rain is often brief, and it contributes to the lush landscapes that Hawaii is famous for. The cooler temperatures and refreshing trade winds make it an ideal time to explore the islands. Here's an illustration depicting the La Niña weather pattern's impact on Hawaii, showing the changes in sea surface temperatures, wind patterns, and rainfall distribution. Winter Activities and Events in Hawaii Winter is a unique season in Hawaii, offering experiences that you can't find during the summer months. Here are some highlights: Big Wave Surfing on the North Shore: From November through December, the North Shore of Oahu becomes the hub for surfing enthusiasts. The famous Vans Triple Crown of Surfing series and the Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational draws surfers from around the globe. Even if you're not a surfer, watching these incredible athletes tackle massive waves is a thrilling experience. Whale Watching: Humpback whales migrate to Hawaii's warm waters during the winter to give birth. The best time to see them is between November and April, with peak sightings from January to March. Maui is often considered the top spot for whale-watching, but you can catch glimpses of these magnificent creatures from any island. Honolulu Marathon and Festivals: December brings the Honolulu Marathon, one of the largest marathons in the U.S., attracting runners worldwide. The islands also come alive with parades, festivals, and cultural celebrations like the Makahiki, a traditional Hawaiian festival dedicated to Lono, the god of agriculture. Holiday Lights and Celebrations: Many hotels and cities, such as Honolulu, host special events and decorations throughout the holiday season. The Honolulu City Lights is popular, featuring parades and festive displays. Why Now is the Best Time to Plan Your Hawaii Vacation If you're thinking about booking a winter trip to Hawaii, Aloha Bruce suggests that now is the perfect time. October and November are typically slower months for tourism, which means more availability and better deals on accommodations. Currently, many hotels are offering promotions like free nights and added amenities, making it an ideal time to take advantage of the softer market. However, if you're planning a trip over the Christmas holidays, be prepared for higher prices and limited availability. It's a popular time for travelers, and accommodations can fill up quickly. Booking well in advance can help you secure the best rates and options. Insider Tips for a Hassle-Free Vacation Planning a Hawaii vacation can be overwhelming, especially with so much information online. That's where Hawaii Aloha Travel comes in. The Cabin is presented by the Wisconsin Counties Association and this week we're featuring Lincoln County: https://bit.ly/3QvVgDlThe Cabin is also brought to you by Group Health Trust: https://bit.ly/3JMizCXCampfire Conversation: Ana, Eric, and Jake explore winter activities in Wisconsin with an eye on the more unique approaches. Sure, you can go skiing, ice skating, snowmobiling, and partake in many of the other typical winter activities, but how about sleigh rides, skijoring, and everybody's favorite New Year's activity (or one to avoid), the polar bear dips? We cover where you can take a sleigh ride across the winter season, not just during Christmas; how skijoring became popular in Wisconsin and places where you can partake, competitively or just for fun; plus some of the most famous places to jump into the frigid waters of Wisconsin's lakes to ring in the New Year, and a number of polar bear dips happening yet this winter, including February and March, in which you can partake. Ice boating is another popular sport you don't find in many other states, but we cover the history, the unique nature of this sport, and how Wisconsin has some of the best (frozen) waters for ice boating and racing, including some in Madison. Another unique feature is the Ice Caves, which during particularly cold winters form along the shores of Lake Superior off the coast of Bayfield County. They already have boat tours of those areas at times, but when the lake freezes well enough a walk on foot is particularly awe-inspiring. Winter festivals around the state offer some unique takes, including the Scandihoovian Winter Festival in Mount Horeb, JanBoree in Waukesha, the ice drags at the Merrill Winter Festival and more - something we detail both in this episode and in some upcoming. Of course, Wisconsin has a number of unique spots for skiing, snowboarding, and tubing - Jake has you covered on that angle. Yes, winters get long in Wisconsin, but with this guide you can maximize the fun in ways you can't in other states. Join us for the tour! Inside Sponsors:Visit Lake Geneva: https://bit.ly/3wHvilf

I have spent a lot of time inside with young kids who have loads of energy (even though we get out as much as we can). We've been in tiny grad student apartments and smaller houses without clear places to physically move their bodies for all 10.5 years of motherhood. As we get into winter, I start to feel a sense of panic about what we will do for months with shorter daylight hours, colder temperatures, and lots of need to move our bodies. In this week's episode, I'm sharing how we've set up our home (even when we lived in tiny apartments) so the kids have places to play hard inside, as well as activities I have to direct the energy when needed. Setting Up Inside So Kids Can Play In The Winter: Create a few intentional places for big movement. Even in our small apartment, we had a picker triangle and a small trampoline. We've added a pull-up bar in a doorway. Have self-directed activities like yoga or calisthenics cards and teach your kids how to use them. Have a list of activities you can refer to when things are going crazy (usually afternoons in our house). Here are a few of our favorite activities from my list: Tape pennies on shoes for tap shoes Skate on the floor with socks - bonus with wash clothes and Force of Nature for a mopping party. Have an indoor snowball fight with rolled-up socks or indoor snowballs. Wheelbarrow walk - hold your child's legs and have them walk around on their hands. Get my personal likes of 25 activities HERE. I don't want to entertain my kids - I want to set up an environment where there are a lot of options for movement. Having these things in place allows us to stay active in the winter months and keep my kids happy and busy. I'd love to hear your best inside activities with kids!
