Is your accent in English holding you back professionally? [Show summary] Esther Bruhl is a speech pathologist and founder of Speak More Clearly, an accent reduction training program for non-native English speakers. In this episode she explains how accents are formed and how new ones can be learned.  Increase your marketability or productivity, by reducing your accent when speaking English [Show notes] Welcome to the 433rd episode of Admissions Straight Talk. Before we dive into today's interview, I want to mention a free resource at Accepted that can benefit you if you're applying to graduate school. The challenge at the heart of admissions is showing that you both fit in at your target schools and stand out in the applicant pool. Accepted's free download, Fitting In & Standing Out: The Paradox At The Heart Of Admissions will show you how to do both. Master this paradox, and you're well on your way to acceptance. You can download your free guide at accepted.com/fiso, which stands for fitting in, standing out.  It gives me great pleasure to have on Admissions Straight Talk for the first time Esther Bruhl, a speech pathologist who specializes in accent reduction for non-native English speakers. Esther is also the founder of Speak More Clearly, both the site and the YouTube channel, and I think she's the first guest we have had from down under, also known as Australia.  How did you get into the accent reduction field? [1:58] I'm a speech and language pathologist. I work with children who have speech and language problems, but I also work with adults who feel they can't be clear. Another speech pathologist and I started doing groups for people face to face in our clinic a long time ago, because in Australia, like in America, there are many people who have second languages. They've come from other places. In fact, in Australia, we have over 400 other languages that other people speak. So we started this for people who were professionals, working either on the phone or other sorts of professions - lawyers, whatever. And they were feeling not confident and not good about the fact that they couldn't be understood. People had to keep asking them to repeat themselves, et cetera, which is very frustrating actually. And so we started those at a very small level and then more and more people were coming along. She pulled out, she went on to do something else, and I just continued on. The more people we had, then we realized we had to make some courses. We originally just had audio courses, but now we have video and audio, the whole shebang, online. And that's how I started, and I got more and more interested in it as I went along.  I assume at this point you're mostly working with adults, no longer with children, right? [3:57] Oh no, I still do have a children case load. What causes accents? [4:09] Oh, I think this is a great question. When we're very, very young, and we start to learn language, we actually hear all the sounds that there are to make. When we babble, we babble all the sounds. All different sounds, even the ‘cha' and ‘schm', and any other sounds that are not in our native languages. And slowly over time, as we're learning our native language or languages, we diminish our auditory acuity for all those other sounds and only focus on the sounds that are in our native language or languages. At the same time, what we're doing is learning to move our mouth in a certain way. We organize our articulators in a certain way to only use those sounds as well, because before when we're babbling, we're saying all sorts of odd sounds that are not in our language. Slowly that takes over, and we no longer use all those other sounds and therefore we have an American accent in English, or an Australian accent in English, or whatever language we're speaking. That is partly to do with our neurological centers which are our language listening areas. So the language listening areas are very open at that po...

Aikman hails from the United States, holds a BA in English, and is also a LEED AP. She is happy to finally be putting her degree in Creative Writing to good use as the Chief Storyteller at the Hub, as well as writing segments on sustainability for The English Show on RadioX. She loves nature, art, furniture-making, traveling, reading, karaoke, every margarita ever made, and all things eco. And she truly believes that each of us has the power to make a difference. Unlike our typical show that features a guest or our first-of-the-month What's Happening, our How-To Series is here to help those who are new to Switzerland or even those who have lived here for a long time. Hey, you might’ve forgotten what it was like when you first got here and didn’t know anything. In our How-To Series, we have sought out those in the known to help you navigate your life here in Switzerland. From getting the train, to taking out your garbage, there are rules, regulations and guidelines that we all need to follow. A lot of information is out there, but we wanted to bring it to you in a short, bite-sized podcast. Maybe you already have this stuff sorted out, but if you see a newcomer to Switzerland, send them our way and hopefully we can help make that transition to Swiss life a little easier.

Have you ever heard of an abstraction? This is probably a new word to you but the meaning is not new to you at all. An abstraction is an idea but not the actual thing. Learning English can sometimes be an abstraction. When you go to a restaurant, you look at the menu, it's a piece of paper. It's what we call an abstraction. It's not anything you would eat. It's just words on a page. You can read the menu. When you read the menu, you'll get some ideas in your mind about what the dish will be, how it might taste, how it might smell. But that's not real, you're just imagining. It's all in your head, it's all an abstraction. You can't eat the menu. You can try, but you'd only be eating paper. You would get no taste or smell or nutrition from eating the menu. The menu is an abstraction, the meal is the real thing. The meal is the real life. And no matter how good the menu is, even if the description's amazing, it will never really give you the experience of eating the actual food. You need real world English, that's why I do this podcast. In my podcast, I don't talk about grammar rules. I talk about real life topics. Real world English. In this latest podcast, I talk about a book right now that I enjoy, "Dumbing Us Down". I talk about life strategies that I think might be useful or helpful to you. I talk in a very normal, real world, conversational way. I do this because you need real world English - real English learning! You don't need grammar rules, vocabulary lists, et cetera. Please join me as I discuss the importance of emphasizing word endings, new books I am reading and more about abstractions! Did you know that you can take six, seven or even eight years of English class and still not know how to speak English? So what are you learning in English class? You are learning how to follow the rules and do what you are supposed to do. But when you get out of class, you no longer have someone telling you how to study English. You no longer have someone telling you to take a test, study, practice your English. I'm not here to tell you exactly what to do. I am not your boss. I don't want to be your boss. I want to be your friend. I want to be your guide. Your coach, your coach who encourages you to be a great performer. Your coach who encourages you, motivates you, to be stronger, to be an independent learner, to have success independently, to get what you want from life, not what I want you, for you. One of our important values in Effortless English is self-reliance. Self-reliance. It's an important value. It means, basically, trust yourself. Trust, believe that you are smart enough. You are good enough. You can make your own decisions. You are your own boss. You are the boss of your learning. You are the boss of your life. Not me. Not some other teacher. In this episode of the Effortless English Show, I share with you easy ways to improve your English reading and English speaking. I share with you the types of books you can read and techniques you can incorporate to improve your English. Most importantly I share with ways to take your power back and have the confidence to know you have what it takes to speak and read English fluently!!
