As disturbing as the reported opioid overdose death toll has been over the past decade, a 2018 study suggested that many states were likely underreporting those deaths. The reason was that coroners and medical examiners were not specifying the drug contributing to the cause of death on death certificates. To better understand drug overdose deaths in Arkansas, state lawmakers passed a law in 2023 addressing this challenge. In this episode of the Wonks at Work podcast, we speak with Dr. Ted Brown, director of the Arkansas State Crime Lab and the state's chief medical examiner, to discuss the impacts of the law and his work to answer questions about how Arkansans have died.

Ted Brown is President & Partner at Lockton Companies, and the founder of The Valor Bridge Foundation, which merged with Salute Colorado in 2021. He now serves as Chairman of the Board for Salute Colorado. Ted discusses the importance of self-awareness in decision-making and emphasizes the need to be comfortable with uncertainty. At Lockton, he believes in empowering individuals to determine their career paths and aligning work with their strengths for long-term fulfillment.  He highlights the importance of a strong leadership team based on authenticity, servant leadership, and cultural fit, and stresses that leadership should be merit-based, not political.   Ted reflects on the value of "aggressive authenticity" in leadership, especially for younger generations, and stresses the importance of developing future leaders to ensure company culture endures beyond a single leader. Finally, he warns against the dangers of ego in leadership, encouraging a focus on servant leadership when developing others.   Key Takeaways [02:51] Ted shares how his father's emphasis on hard work and adversity, shaped by losing his own father young, influenced him during summers working on a ranch and sparked his desire to serve in the military. After 9/11, Ted tried to enlist in the Navy to become a SEAL but withdrew due to personal reasons, a decision he regretted deeply. At 37, too old to enroll, he channeled this regret into action by interviewing veterans and creating a 12-week program to help veterans transition to civilian life, focusing on personal identity, leadership, and networking with mentors. This initiative has been highly rewarding and impactful. [07:36] Ted discusses decision-making, explaining that it starts with self-awareness. In both personal and business contexts, decisions require understanding one's values, timelines, and impacts on people and culture. He emphasizes that decisions rarely have all the information available, so it's important to be comfortable with uncertainty. [10:57] Ted touches on leadership potential and career fulfillment at Lockton. He explains that while the company offers resources like executive coaching and personality tests, not everyone follows the same path. They need both long-term contributors and those seeking advancement. It's about empowering individuals to determine their career trajectory. [13:08] Ted agrees with Jan that companies today need more personalized development approaches. While a general framework is necessary, tailoring growth to each individual's strengths leads to better career fulfillment. He believes that aligning 75% of one's work with their natural strengths is key to long-term satisfaction and organizational stability. [16:20] Ted discusses the importance of a strong leadership team that is comfortable in their skin, authentic, and servant leaders. He explains that when people are miscast in roles, they become limiting factors. Ted stresses the need for leadership teams that fit well within the culture and how advancement should be based on merit, not politics, to avoid limitations. [19:39] Jan asks Ted about the role of consequences in reinforcing company culture. Ted explains that, initially, their company rewarded bad actors for financial performance, but the focus has now shifted to authenticity, servant leadership, and having an impact beyond financial success. Leaders lead by example, picking up the heaviest burdens and being the first to admit mistakes. [22:44] Ted reflects on "aggressive authenticity" as a leader, especially in front of younger generations who want to see themselves in their leaders. Authenticity, he believes, comes from sharing personal stories, admitting mistakes, and earning trust by following through on commitments. He encourages leading by removing obstacles for the team. [24:51] Jim raises a concern about leadership cultures falling apart after a leader leaves. Ted emphasizes the importance of investing in others to ensure the culture outlasts a single leader. Leaders should focus on developing their teams so that future leaders can make the company their own while keeping core principles alive. [28:09] Ted concludes by highlighting the dangers of ego in leadership. He suggests that self-interest can ruin leadership potential, while servant leadership focuses on the impact and value delivered to the organization. Ted advises being okay with giving credit to others and developing people who may one day surpass you in the company. [30:17] And remember,  You shall, I question not, find a way to the top if you diligently seek for it; for nature hath placed nothing so high that it is out of the reach of industry and valor.  - Alexander the Great   Quotable Quotes "It's an honor to serve those who served our country and sacrificed. That's the least I can do, but it's definitely been a rewarding journey." "You have to understand who you are first and what is going to fulfill you in your life and your career. That requires a process." "Turn regret into action." "Be comfortable being uncomfortable with making decisions without 100% of the information." "Fulfillment doesn't necessarily mean happy. It means that you're being challenged and having tough, hard conversations about meeting or exceeding expectations." "Career fulfillment comes down to leveraging and utilizing your God-given strengths 75% of the time." "Empower people to embrace who they are and leverage that for their own advancement, and you'll end up with a lot of longevity in an organization."  "It's almost easier to make decisions in business than it is in life." "Your culture becomes the worst behavior you tolerate." "Trust is earned when you actually get to that finish line." "If you're not demonstrating that behavior, you can't enforce the expectations. You will lose the culture." "In order for things to last, they have to be legacy-minded principles and philosophies." "One of the things that can absolutely ruin leadership potential is ego." "The second you free yourself of self-interest and you focus truly on the impact and value that you can have to an organization, that's how you can become a great servant leader." "Relevance is fueled by ego." "Be okay giving all the credit to those around you. Be okay putting people in positions that someday could be your boss. If you do that, you're going to be a big part of something that's way bigger than yourself." Resources Mentioned The Leadership Podcast | Sponsored by | Rafti Advisors. LLC | Self-Reliant Leadership. NEW POLLING: VOTERS TERRIFIED BY TRUMP "3RD TERM" TALK - 5.22.24

SERIES 2 EPISODE 180: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: We may have had a breakthrough with the electorate. Democratic AND Republican pollsters are finding a shocking number of undecideds or Republicans who will not vote for Trump because of his talk of trying to make himself eligible for a third term, or eliminating term limits entirely, or elections entirely. The fundamental lesson of January 6th - that he will never leave office voluntarily - has sunk in. And which ever way the cult is trying to position it, these voters are taking it seriously. More over, these seem pollsters are finding a sudden surge in independent and even Republican backlash against The Supreme Court because the gutting of Roe-V-Wade has caused countless voters to reconsider what kind of havoc a corrupted Trump-owned Court would be willing to do to fraudulently bring about the America the fascists want. It's stunning news and combined with additional polling showing Biden running far behind Democratic Senators in the swing state, it suggests not only that there are margins of victory to be added to his vote totals in those states, but that there is a straightforward way to get them: campaign AGAINST dictatorship, third terms, and a rogue Court. PLUS: THE DEFENSE RESTS at the Trump Trial. Literally, in his case. All you need to know about what happened was that on Trump's Tuesday posse was comedian Joe Piscopo, who was very good on his last hit, Saturday Night Live, which he just left recently. Well, no, not recently - FORTY YEARS AGO THIS MONTH. B-Block (30:47) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Marco Rubio doesn't know what the phrase "last name" means. Chris Cillizza has just discovered people have been diagnosing mental acuity of presidential candidates from afar (it started a decade ago, by Trump. Chris thinks it started earlier this week with Stuart Stevens). And having burned through CNN, MSNBC, PBS, and Fox News, Tucker Carlson premieres on Russia-24. C-Block (37:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: At 5:40 AM he told me he was going to get my fired from our radio station, and kill me. At 6:40 AM he was promising me a multi-year contract as a new sportscaster on our radio station. It's more than four decades ago and it is still as scary an experience as I've had in my career. Hear all about it on this episode of Big Blend Radio, along with some banter about his move from New Zealand to the US, his music career and songwriting, and some conversation on music history. The album “Solstice Canyon Loop” is a reminiscence of a journey. From Ted's crazy, dangerous troubled twenties in his hometown of AK New Zealand, to his restoration to sanity in Los Angeles CA. He was able to start again in the U.S. and had time to really pause and reflect on this during the lockdown months of the pandemic. Plus, Ted really got in touch with the memory of some of those who never made it. Calling on members of his 70's Country cover band, The Electric Fields, Ted assembled some of his favorite L.A. guys to play on the record. Notably, Dusty Wakeman on Bass (Dwight Yoakam, Lucinda Williams, Buck Owens), Mark Hart on Keys (Crowded House, Supertramp), Joel Martin on Guitar (Grateful to the Core, Pearl), Tim Walker on Pedal Steel (Glen Campbell, Jimmy Webb, The White Buffalo) and CalArts Alum and musician extraordinaire Rob Anderson on Drums. SERIES 2 EPISODE 57: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Who could have guessed this? Republican Congressmen and Congresswomen are only in favor of threats when the threats are NOT made against themselves! Imagine being SUCH a schmuck that all the other people in the schmuck PARTY not only hate you and are trying to defeat you, but they have coordinated their hatred so that the votes against you keep GROWING and you get MORE humiliated each time you step out there. Imagine that's YOU. That would make YOU…Jim Jordan! Hi, Schmuck! Now it's 22 Republicans vote against him, and at least SEVEN claim Jordan is responsible for doxxing and intimidation and in at least one case, death threats. So they are reportedly co-ordinating their no votes. So he gets LESS support on each vote. And he still plans on conducting a third vote. I'll explain who the fictional Senator Fred Van Ackerman was, which movie he was in, and why Jim Jordan is one plot twist away from becoming him and getting Van Ackerman's choice: resign, or stay around as a mute lame duck. Because it turns out the Republicans hate Jordan even more than WE DO. I'll also explain how the Gaza Hospital scam didn't even last 24 hours. Because if it starts with “THEY BOMBED THE HOSPITAL” but it proves they actually “BOMBED THE PARKING LOT," all the other claims become exponentially LESS believable. And that leads us to genius of Joe Biden for going to Israel and throwing this country's weight behind the truth. And how that dovetails into the story of what the newspapermen were writing 40 years ago today, about the president who was too old to run again and might not run and was facing an unbeatable opponent. And that president wound up winning the electoral college by 525 votes to 13. B-Block (23:00) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: GOP Congressman Mike Collins pretends GOP isn't imploding by saying Hakeem Jeffries lost too. And Marjorie Taylor Barney Rubble Greene makes that rare double appearance in the list: winning for attacking "insurrectionists" at the Capitol whose text messages were about hot dog stands. C-Block (29:25) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It wasn't THAT traumatic. It was just the most venerable disc jockey in New York radio coming into the newsroom and screaming that he would get me - the 21-year old back-up sportscaster - fired that day, and then an hour later, the same disc jockey coming back into the newsroom and screaming that he would get me a multi-year contract to become a regular on his show.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

EPISODE 199: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-BLOCK (1:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: All mainstream American news organizations must today solemnly and unflinchingly look inward after what happened last night and understand that if you simply assume as CNN did that if you apply the journalistic rules of 20, 50, or 150 years ago to a candidate who will speak any lie, who will slander any person, who will manipulate any fear, who will betray any and all aspects of democracy, you will inherit the wind. CNN handed over 70 minutes of its primetime, and all of its remaining credibility, to a madman, to a criminal, to a liar, to a would-be dictator. It gave him an audience of braying cult members who gave him not one critical nor even less-than-fawning question. It gave him a moderator whom he ignored, mocked, insulted, lied to, lied about, and who in turn thought everything would be fine if she simply responded to his lies by saying “no you're wrong.” CNN must fire its CEO Chris Licht for birthing a journalistic abomination unprecedented in American television history last night; Its new owners must sell the network whose brand they irreparably damaged last night. E. Jean Carroll needs to sue Donald Trump for the new defamatory comments he made about he last night; And moderator Kaitlan Collins needs to sue her agent for ending her career last night. Last night, CNN legitimized the lies and the feral venom of Donald Trump. And for whatever shamed remorse might leak out of that organization today and in the days ahead; for whatever sober self-reflection might be done at the New York Times or The Washington Post or the other outlets who may have now seen what happens when you apply the laws of honest journalism in a democracy to a man who will not and cannot even consider honesty or democracy; for whether or not some editor really stopped someone writing “Trump lied to and abused America for 70 minutes last night; here's why that's bad news for Joe Biden”…for whatever regret felt, or lesson learned.. there will be others who will look at the ratings as they come out later today and say “Did you see those numbers? We need to do one of those right away!” It was a disaster from start to finish. And the bottom line is: CNN as a credible news organization, as the FIRST credible full-time American television all-news organization - THAT'S what's finished. B-BLOCK (21:37) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: So many counts against George Santos that he, Devolder, and his drag queen persona could each get life sentences. The return of Feinstein. (24:00) IN SPORTS: NFL's new schedule: only two days a week WITHOUT any football. And you can be a top college basketball coach and use a homophobic slur and the word "Catholic" as the adjective before it and still NOT get fired? (27:34) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Which idiots scheduled their attack on the Biden family between the Santos arraignment and the CNN Trump fiasco? Alex Haley may have made up the quote that made enemies of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. And Senator Tuberville wants to make the Military safe for White Nationalists (like him). C-BLOCK (33:40) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Beautiful young German Shepherd Lonzo may die in California (35:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Morning radio and sports fanaticism do not mix. One day a long time ago I criticized the New York Football Giants on the station that carried them. The DJ who loved them then came out into the newsroom and threatened to get me fired by 8:30 AM. EPISODE 72: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) OH GOD I so wanted Trump to declare his candidacy last night. He was THISCLOSE to doing it at his fascist rally in Ohio and thus snatching defeat for the Republicans from the jaws of victory, like he did in Georgia. But somebody got to him! (3:46) Whatever happens today, the media is doing everything it can to stick to the "Red Wave" narrative: Their polls all indicate Democratic leads in the Generic Congressional Ballot so what did Politico, Yahoo, and Reuters do? THEY DISMISSED THEIR OWN POLLS AS OUTLIERS. It all underscores the real media narrative: The media corporations are sucking up to the fascists (8:30) Last night, the Republicans gave away the next narrative: any election undecided by Wednesday morning has been fixed by the Democrats (10:48) Oh by the way, a key member of Russia's 2016 Conspiracy with Trump confessed to interfering in the election (11:45) And Elon Musk tweeted more Nazi names and six months after saying "for Twitter to deserve public trust it must be politically neutral" he told his 115,000,000 followers they should vote Republican. Oh and he's also talking about putting all of Twitter behind a paywall.  B-Block (16:40) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Ace has been reserved! Today it's Angie, in Brooklyn (17:33) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Bannon incarceration delayed, Ted Cruz hit by a White Claw and Texas police actually just don't stand there (19:24) IN SPORTS: Check with me Monday after new Coach Saturday makes his debut Sunday; It's the strangest NFL coaching move since Rock Island fired its coach mid-game in 1921. Baseball free agent news and the new Veterans' Hall of Fame Ballot is out: McGriff, Murphy, Mattingly, four roiders, one jackass - where's Keith Hernandez? (23:27) Brit "Trash OnThe Street" Hume and CNN's New Morning Show, called "Fascists? Please Let Us Live!" are no match for the all-time champion of Conventional Political Lack of Wisdom and Groupthink: Chris Cillizza with an all-time great column, telling History Teacher Jim Clyburn he doesn't understand history. C-Block (34:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: The day in 1981 the disc jockey on the top New York radio station tried to kill me and then get me fired for daring to criticize "his" New York Giants on his show. The saga of Ted Brown and "he won't remember that either" (49:55) Plus, because it was handy, a complete sportscast from December 30, 1981, and 22-year old me doing an entire sportscast on WNEW Radio in New York, complete with the latest Wayne Gretzky news (and Ted Brown).See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In June 2012, Egypt held its first ever free democratic Presidential election. Mohamed Morsi, representing the Muslim Brotherhood, emerged victorious. Ben Henderson spoke to Rabab El-Mahdi, Chief Strategist to one of Morsi's rival candidates. She described what it was like to be involved in the first election of its kind, how Morsi tried to recruit her, and the personal impact of political campaigning in such a polarised country. In June 1982 a young Chinese-American engineer was murdered with a baseball bat by two white men in the US city of Detroit. The lenient sentences the perpetrators received sparked an Asian-American activist movement with protests across the US. At the time, America was going through an economic depression and many blamed Japan, which was perceived to be flooding the US with its cars. For Asian-Americans, it was a time of fear. Farhana Haider spoke to Helen Zia, one of the activists who led the fight for justice. This programme was first broadcast in 2017. In 2003, Dr Nayana Patel, who ran her own fertility clinic in the state of Gujarat in India, carried out her first surrogacy procedure. It involved a surrogate mother and her own daughter. Dr Patel's clinic would go on to become one of the biggest in India attracting Western couples. It was legalised in 2002 but due to growing criticism, the government banned couples from the West from paying Indian surrogates to bear their children in 2015, arguing that the industry was exploiting poor women. Reena Stanton-Sharma spoke to Dr Nayana Patel. In 1985, the first robot-assisted medical surgery took place in Vancouver, Canada. It's now become a standard feature of operating theatres worldwide. The original gadget was named Arthrobot. A member of the original project team, Geof Auchinleck, told his story to Kurt Brookes. A Made in Manchester production. As a non-profit they are able to reach potential participants through the school system. One of the ways the outreach program works is by accepting musical instrument donations. The repair techs volunteer their time and repair the instruments and then give the instruments back to kids who want to play music but do not have the money to rent or buy an instrument.  The Live It OUTLOUD program is an 8 week summer program that shows kids 12 to 18 how to be in a band.  Featuring professional musicians as mentors the kids are placed into bands and provided hands on instruction.  The program ends  in a concert where the bands showcase their new found skills.Stephanie shares a lot of stories and insights about Ted Brown Music and the Ted Brown Music Outreach program. Ted and I sat down for a live conversation at UK Black Pride's 2021 virtual pride celebration, Love and Rage, to explore the sparks that ignited his activism, our shared connection to Bayard Rustin, what he's learned about love and rage, and his advice to a new generation of activists and change makers. Ted Brown is a black LGBT rights pioneer who helped organise the UK's first Gay Pride march in 1972, featuring a mass ‘kiss-in' that, at the time, would have been considered gross indecency, which was against the law. When Brown realised he was gay, homosexuality was illegal in Britain - the only person he came out to was his mother. She cried and told him he'd have to battle not just racism but homophobia too; both were rife in society at the time. At one point Brown felt so dismal about his future that he considered taking his own life. But inspired by the Stonewall Riots, he found hope in Britain's Gay Liberation Front and became a key figure in fighting bigotry in the UK. He tells Emily Webb his moving life story. So many people will resonate with the musical journey that Don Messina has had.  He has been a proponent of the music and style of Lennie Tristano ever since meeting him in 1973, and he also spent 14 years studying jazz with tenor saxophonist Fred Amend. In addition to being part of the Kazzrie Jaxen Duo/Trio/Quartet, Don has session and performed with Sal, Mosca, Jimmy Halperin, Larry Bluth, Jon Easton, Peter Prisco, Ted Brown, Rick Moore, Chris Aiello, Will Jhun,  Charley Krachy, Skip Scott, Rich Peare, and others. Don has also performed with Phil Woods, Stanley Turrentine, Joris Roelsof, Vassar Clemens, Mike Scap, Josh Breakstone, and the Lew London Trio. Don and I dig into his decisions to play gut strings and without an amp, the unique musical scene surrounding Lennie Tristano, Sal Mosca, and Don’s other major influences, how the jazz scene has evolved over the years, and much more. We also feature a couple of excerpts from Don’s solo album “Dedicated to…”  Enjoy! Listen to Contrabass Conversations with our free app for iOS, Android, and Kindle! Eugene is a surprising hotbed of video games. "Tribes," "Godzilla: Destroy All Monster's Melee," and "Red Baron" are just a few games to be developed in its local studios. While larger studios like Pipeworks tend to employee the most people, there's also an active indie scene that is nowhere more apparent than at the second annual Indie Game Con. Hundreds of people filled Lane Community College in early October to play new titles, from space shooters like "XO" and "Star Mazer" to fantasy games like "Villagers & Heroes" to the more unusual, like a game of dueling narwhals called "Fail Whale" and a game of dueling tongues called "Smooth Operator."On today's show we talk to developers about making games and getting game face on for taking their creations out into the world.Meet our guests: Ted Brown is the director of Eugene-based Indie Game Con. A veteran of Zynga and Buzz Monkey Software, Brown own and operates game studio Oreganik LLC, which developed the app games "Chess Heroes" and "Epic Skater." He’s also on the board of the trade group Oregon Game Association. Michael Jones is a Eugene-based sound designer and composer who has been creating audio for games for more than a decade. He chairs the Eugene chapter of the International Game Developers Association, and he’s director of professional development for BitForest, a networking group for Eugene-area game makers. He also composed all the music used in the show. Britt Brady, lead designer and art director of Cowboy Color Games, has lived in Eugene for about nine years. Involved in the game community for the past two years, he says he’s more of an “abstract creative” than a programmer. Cowboy Color’s game of shooting and blocking, "Charge Shot," was prototyped during a game jam. Cullen Dwyer, lead programmer of Cowboy Color Studio, had only recently moved to Eugene when he partnered with Brady to develop "Charge Shot." Kate Thomas, producer and co-founder at Portland-based Beardo Games, developed "Smooth Operator" with programmer Chris Harback and artist Miles Neilson. The trio prototyped the game where you compete to be the better kisser for the Ludum Dare global game jam in 2013. Damon Slye is one of the godfathers of the Eugene gaming community. After co-founding the pioneering game studio Dynamix in 1984, he helped produce games for the Commodore 64 computer and game companies Activision and Electronic Arts. He left the company and the industry in 1994 (Dynamix was acquired by Sierra Online in 1990.) He came back in 2007 with Mad Otter Games. Currently he’s developing an online multi-player fantasy game called "Villagers & Heroes" that emphasizes social interactivity. Mad Otter has also acquired the rights to "Red Baron" and is planning a reboot.Plus a cast of hundreds of gleeful developers, players, and others who wandered through Lane Community College's downtown campus in Eugene that day. Press "play" to begin!
