Dive into a fiery take on John Taylor Gatto's Dumbing Us Down, where surveillance and networks cage our freedom and connection. This isn't just a lament—it's a call to fight back. Rebellion is any jab against the system: a dodged tracker, a free thought. Tribalism is the heart, the trust that binds us beyond cold algorithms. In 2.5 minutes, explore why we're built for defiance and bonds—and why the machine can't snuff them out.
This is the AI generated discussion of my article, Are LLMs Dumbing Us Down? I was worried about the AI characters discussing themselves on this. It's actually a fascinating conversation. I loved the way they took the issues I identified, both doing thoughtful discussions and giving great examples. There are areas where I disagreed with some of what they were recommending, but the "thinking" and POV was fascinating. This is really worth listening to! Enjoy! Jason Herrick and his wife Caitlin decided to start playing offense for their children and the future of this country by taking control of the education they provide their children, themselves, and all the families lives they will touch through starting their own Apogee Strong campus; Apogee HoCo.Howard County, Maryland will be home to one of 50 campuses starting up in the near future all over the US. The mission of Apogee Strong is one that resonates with me deeply. Leading through example, not being afraid of failure, critical thinking, hands on learning, educating the whole family & more.Jason's story of suffering a severe concussion early in his professional soccer career left him unsure of the future of his family and his ability to provide. After being stuck of the subscription model of healthcare, and dealing with let down after let down, he realized through the help of some non-traditional medical professionals that he had the power to heal himself. It took searching out and being proactive about his care to find this solution. He now aims to provide all the families that enroll in Apogee HoCo this same gift. His leadership philosophy is to encourage, educate, and empower and he lives this in his own life and you'll be able to pick up on his care and authenticity in today's episode. Embark on a personal and enlightening expedition with me, Cheryl, as we navigate the waters of homeschooling alongside Kathy Gibbens of the "Filter it Through a Brain Cell" podcast. Kathy is a homeschool Mom who first learned about logical fallacies along with her 7th grade daughter. She quickly realized that this little-taught skill is essential for navigating all the crazy messages we are being bombarded with by culture. Last year, Kathy got off the bench and launched her podcast, where she teaches critical thinking in short, fun episodes and is passionate about helping the next generation learn to think well and love God with their mind.Together, we uncover the rich tapestry of motivations that lead families to educate from home, challenging the stereotypes and embracing a philosophy of independent thought and strong values. Kathy draws from her well of experience, revealing the profound ways in which homeschooling can cultivate discernment in young minds, amidst a sea of media narratives and persuasive propaganda. In our latest episode, we're not just talking about the logistics of teaching math or phonics at home; we're delving into the essence of what it means to truly learn. Kathy and I dissect the strategies for nurturing critical thinkers, using everyday situations to expose fallacies and biases that so often cloud our judgment. Whether it's through engaging discussions or the simple act of reading together, education unfurls as a personal journey rather than a one-size-fits-all curriculum, unlocking the boundless potential within each child. As we close this chapter, we ponder the paths that unfold beyond the homeschooling horizon, where traditional routes of education make way for innovation and self-driven success. Kathy illuminates the exciting prospects for homeschooled children as they embrace entrepreneurship and alternative learning, crafting a future that resonates with their individual passions. For parents and children alike, this conversation is a testament to the power of choice in education and an invitation to redefine what it means to live a fulfilled and continuously learning life.Get in touch with Kathy:www.filteritthroughabraincell.comIG: @filteritthroughabraincellemail: think@filteritthroughabraincellpodcast: Filter It Through a Brain Cell*****PLEASE share SHARE share this link with friends and in your favorite homeschool group facebook page if you enjoy this podcast and want to hear more episodes! http://thehomeschoolhowto.com/Grab your Sweatshirt! What if the education system is failing our children, leaving them ill-prepared for the real world and stifling their creative potential? We tackle this pressing issue in our deeply engaging discussion with Nicola, a lecturer from Scotland, who shares her unique insights on this matter. We turn our focus to the infantilization of youth, particularly in the UK and Scotland, and how government policies contribute to this alarming trend. We question the skills traditional education imparts and highlight the glaring disconnect between what's taught in schools and what's needed in the workforce. Our conversation takes a fascinating turn as we scrutinize the influence of government and media manipulation, specifically in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. We dissect the breakdown of systems, the strict measures implemented in the US and the UK, and the role media and Hollywood play in shaping public opinion. We go on to discuss the issues surrounding borders, diversity, and censorship—touching on the BLM protests, open borders, and immigration. In a thought-provoking discourse, we question and critically evaluate the ongoing societal concerns. Finally, we explore the challenges and frustrations of teaching in a censored environment and the potential negative impacts on students. We come up with creative solutions for parents to engage their children in problem-solving activities and underscore the significance of creativity in education. This conversation is more than just an informative discussion—it's a call to action for a better, more effective education system. What a pleasure to be joined by Brittni this week, homeschooling mom of three and owner of Henrieka Farm Center, a farm school she created in New York after leaving her teaching position. Brittni is also a member of the military, so we thank her for her service to our country. Brittni explains to us the importance of doing things for our community, whether it be providing farm fresh food to those in need, or providing a screen free, nature filled before and after care for the local school children. I ask Brittni how she came to the decision to leave her career and steady income to homeschool her children and open her farm school. She explains the steps she went through to make such a decision. We discuss how the land she and her husband purchased was once a cottage for the socialites of Albany, NY. Brittni started out by raising chickens and expanded over the years. She even explains to us how she "tanned the hide" this year- and yes, I had to ask her what that meant! Brittni created Henrieka Farm Center to nurture children through free play, calculated and supervised risk and to provide an education into the field of agriculture, directly connecting kids to not only the world around them, but their food supply. The children at Brittni's school learn from a young age how to take care of themselves and others. They learn through experiencing fundamental literacy and educational practices to develop themselves into productive and engaged citizens of their communities. I think it's safe to say that more of these types of schools are needed in our country. There is such a disconnect today with kids to nature and the food they consume and it's only growing worse with the more we rely on screens. I hope Brittni's message finds those who need or want to hear it and I hope we can work together to bring experiences like this to the children of our communities. This week we sit with Amber Coglianese, a momma who homeschooled all five of her children. They are adults now, so we chat about what homeschooling kids back in the 90s and early 2000s was like. I ask Amber, a homeschool curriculum expert, "what is the best curriculum to use?" You may be surprised at her answer. Amber matches people up with curriculums just as a wedding dress seller matches future brides with their dream dress. We discuss how to make your homeschool a "way of life" instead of just something to "get through"- so your day can begin. We also talk about the difference between having a schedule and having a rhythm. Amber tells us how she managed homeschooling five kids at one time; what subjects could be taught together, and what should be done independently. She explains how she kept the little ones occupied as she worked with the older kids. Since her children are all grown up now, Amber started Storybook Umbrella- which has since been changed to Backpack Homeschool. Follow Amber @BackpackHomeschool on Instagram to:

This week we talk with Amberlee Rich from Idaho. Former art teacher turned homeschool mom and financial coach, Amberlee walks us through what made her decide to homeschool her children. Have you ever felt your child was not safe when you dropped them off at school?? Amberlee tells us about that experience.Soon after feeling unsafe in the school system, Amberlee's daughter was diagnosed with MIS-C, a Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C). It is a rare condition associated with SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) that usually occurs 2-6 weeks after a child is infected with SARS-CoV-2. MIS-C causes different internal and external body parts to become inflamed, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal tract. After Amberlee's daughter's diagnosis, she knew home was the best place for her kids. We talk about the importance of teaching financial literacy to our children starting at an early age and how you can incorporate it into your everyday homeschooling life (no extra curriculum needed!)Amberlee explains how she juggles teaching two kids at different levels, and how she picks the books they read. Are you wondering- how has homeschooling been going for ME?? Oh goodness- you don't want to miss this! I ask Amberlee how she handles the situation when her kids just want to be crazy and not pay attention to that pesky ol' school work, and her response is SO SIMPLE! We discuss, "Is homeschooling for everyone?" and when it might not be for you. Krista joins us this week from Oklahoma, where she homeschools her two girls, ages 11 and 8. Krista went to school to become a teacher and was so excited and full of ideas when it was time to complete her cousework as a student teacher. Her disallusion of how the industry of education really works was quickly shattered when she was told in October how she could not use gummy worms and ketchup as part of a third grade lesson because it had nothing to do with what was on the test in June. Krista was disiplined for questioning the authority figure about this and soon decided that education was not the right path for her if she was not free to teach kids in a way that was fun for them. Krista researched private schools to put her, then baby, into one day but kept coming back to the thought, "why would I pay someone to do this when I can do it myself?" She began researching what homeschooling was all about and the first book she picked up was John Taylor Gotto's, Dumbing Us Down. From there, she was sold. This was the path for her family. Krista's excitment for homeschooling shines through the airwaves. Her emphasis on reading good quality books with your child really takes the pressure off us homeschooling parents because that is something we can all do- and it's free with a library card. Krista believes that if reading together is the only thing you did for schoolwork that day- you have had a successful day! Join us for this inspirational chat and get excited to be on this journey with your little ones. A journey where no one can tell you you can't use gummy worms and ketchup to ignite the flame of a life long learner. Click here to get in touch with Krista! Boredom can stifle curiosity and kill a love for learning, leading to low motivation and underachievement. Traditional schools often focus on grades and test scores, which can diminish a child's natural desire to learn. We've found that homeschooling offers a tailored learning experience that encourages intrinsic motivation, allowing children to explore their interests deeply and grow into independent, confident thinkers. John Klyczek, Professor and Author, joins me to discuss how our school system has been infiltrated or rather designed so that it dumbs our students down rather than lift them up, confuse and propagandize them rather than educate. We discussed how the Order has played a big role in this plot to control the minds of the masses. John's book School World Order exposes the connections with this failing education agenda and the transhumanist control paradigm. Lets hope this sci-fi dystopia that's written about by authors like Aldous Huxley becomes fiction in the future rather than reality. John shares an account of his time learning from the late Charlotte Thomson Iserbyt and the fascinating items she shared with him. After teaching in New York City public schools for 30 years–twice winning State Teacher of the Year–John Taylor Gatto no longer wanted “to hurt kids to make a living.” Gatto resigned in the op-ed pages of the Wall Street Journal in an essay titled “I Quit, I Think.” He spent the last 27 years of his life speaking and writing against compulsory schooling. Many parents new to homeschooling often immediately think “what curriculum or program should I buy” when in reality, that question should be much further down the list. Every family comes to homeschooling for different reasons but regardless of that reason, a parent should really take some time to think about what they want for their child’s education, as well as, what their child needs to learn best. These are two separate issues to think about. Both are are very important though to determine how to move forward in determining how and what to teach your child(ren). The good news is there are a variety of social media groups, blogs, articles, and books to learn from and get insight for your educational needs. It’s important to take time to research, think and formulate your own educational philosophies and needs for YOU and YOUR CHILD. Once you think a bit deeper about your needs, you may find that what you want for your child isn’t “traditional” and you want something more natural or developmental. On the flip side, you may find that you want something more rigorous and challenging. Each child is different and it will be easier to target curriculum or programs that might work for you and your child once you dive deeper into these ideas. Here’s a list of well regarded books to explore education and homeschooling as a larger issue. It’s by no means an exhaustive list and there are many books available through your library e media, amazon, Kindle, or perhaps even a fellow homeschooler can loan you one. This episode talks about how compulsory a.k.a. mandatory schooling is designed to control and supress a society of people. It's based off the book by John Taylor Gatto titled "Dumbing Us Down."
A couple weeks ago, on episode 16, we did a podcast called "Technology Dumbing Us Down". In that episode, we discussed how technology is making us weaker these days. During a phone call, my friend, and fellow podcaster, G.R. suggested a different view. So we decided to revisit the conversation. Listening to episode 16 will give you a little context on this conversation. Give them both a listen. Feel like giving us feedback? Questions? Since the late 1990's, technology has exploded and, thus, changed how we live our lives! In 2003, the iPod revolutionized music. Then in 2007, the iPhone changed everything!!! Today, we live and die by our phones and technology that we surrounded with. In this episode, we discuss the different ways technology has affected our lives. Now, it seems, we are forced to rely on technology more than ever before. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? Take a listen!!!
The College Essay Guy Podcast: A Practical Guide to College Admissions
This is the first of two episodes on homeschooling and self-directed learning, something that as the father of a four year-old I am way into. My guest is Becca Orlowski, a teacher and consultant with more than two decades of experience in the independent homeschooling world. On this episode we talk about: What are some common homeschooling myths? Is it true, for example, that homeschooling is “too much work” for any parent in their right minds? Are colleges biased towards homeschoolers… against… neither or both? What kinds of folks choose to homeschool and can parents homeschool and work? Different homeschooling styles, how homeschooling academics differ from public schools, and even nitty gritty tips like the practical differences for homeschoolers applying to college and the amount of detail homeschoolers need in their transcripts As always, lots of resources and recommendations... Jon Corippo describes himself as a “formerly disgruntled student.” He made it almost all the way through school at a 2.9 GPA. His final three semesters in Advertising changed everything, though: Advertising classes were project based. Jon's grades shot to nearly 4.0. Also while at Fresno State, Jon served as a graduate assistant football coach, learning about leadership and teaching at the feet of Jim Sweeney. Jon graduated college with no intention of teaching. After about 7 years in non-educational jobs, Jon's amazing wife persuaded him to try his hand in education: he was hooked after just two days as a long-term sub on an emergency credential. About 20 years later, Jon had served a decade at the K-8 level, opened a 1-1, PBL, Google-based high school, served in two county offices, including as an Assistant Superintendent and It Director. Jon has been recognized a County Teacher of the Year, a 20 to Watch Educator by the NSBA, and was a finalist in the EdTech Digest Awards. Jon also holds the Apple Distinguished Educator, Google Certified Innovator, and Microsoft Innovative Educator badges. Jon is very proud of his work with CUE, where he currently serves as the Executive Director. His work with CUE includes creating the CUE Rock Star concept of Professional Development, with a focus on hands-on learning and getting teachers connected via social media. Cue Rock Star Camps now include Admin, TOSA, Teacher and Specialized Editions for core areas. Jon has lead the development of the very successful CUE Launch program, and the well received CUE BOLD Symposium. Under Jon's leadership, CUE professional learning has trained over 30,000 educators in only two years. Jon lives in Coarsegold, California, near Yosemite, with his wife (a very successful educator), three children and a random number of free-range chickens. Eduprotocols - Book 2 will be adding a dozen new Eduprotocols to the existing sixteen Eduprotocols in original book. In today's episode I want to give thanks and remembrance to John Taylor Gatto. He passed away on October 25 and will be missed by many around the world. For those unfamiliar with Mr Gatto, he was a true pioneer in the education field and harsh critic of compulsory education. As a long time teacher, he saw the inner workings of schools and the effects the system had on children. He was teacher of the year in New York twice and used that platform to expose the faults and dangers of the system he worked in. Thankfully, he broke free of that system and became an advocate and beacon to those bucking the system for something better for their children. One of my favorite Gatto quotes:“Whatever an education is, it should make you a unique individual, not a conformist; it should furnish you with an original spirit with which to tackle the big challenges; it should allow you to find values which will be your roadmap through life; it should make you spiritually rich, a person who loves whatever you are doing, wherever you are, whomever you are with; it should teach you what is important, how to live and how to die.”My introduction to Mr. Gatto was when a friend suggested I read Dumbing Us Down. I can honestly say this book not only forever changed how I looked at education but it changed my life. It's now the book I encourage everyone to read that is considering homeschooling or thinking about education in general. You will not be able to look at a classroom or institutional education the same again.More quotes shared:“School is a twelve-year jail sentence where bad habits are the only curriculum truly learned. I teach school and win awards doing it. I should know.” "I feel ashamed that so many of us cannot imagine a better way to do things than locking children up all day in cells instead of letting them grow up knowing their families, mingling with the world, assuming real obligations, striving to be independent and self-reliant and free."“The lesson of report cards, grades, and tests is that children should not trust themselves or their parents but should instead rely on the evaluation of certified officials. People need to be told what they are worth.” “Children allowed to take responsibility and given a serious part in the larger world are always superior to those merely permitted to play and be passive.”Books by John Taylor GattoDumbing Us Down The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory EducationWeapons of Mass Instruction: A Schoolteacher's Journey Through the Dark World of Compulsory SchoolingA Different Kind of teacher: Solving the Crisis of American SchoolingThe Underground History of American Education Thank you Mr Gatto for being an advocate and never giving up, even when change was slow. I encourage homeschoolers and parents to continue to be advocates and continue to inspire and motivate others in helping their children learn best. Unschooling is more about self-directed learning, finding out what you’re interested in, and going really deep into something. In this episode of Nat Chat, I’m joined by Blake Boles. While in college, Blake stumbled upon a book that really opened his eyes to the world of unschooling, alternative education, and how students could be learning better outside of the traditional systems. Shortly after graduating, he worked in California doing outdoor education and then ran off to South America for three months, where he decided he wanted to work within the alternative education field while also traveling. He then started Unschool Adventures, where he takes students on two-month trips to interesting places around the world. Blake is an excellent guy to follow if you’re into the alternative education and unschooling movement, as well as the digital nomad space. We covered a wide range of topics, including: Alternative educational systems The unschooling movement and its goals Finding the motivation to leave the traditional school system Fixing the existing school systems The importance of self-directed learning Turning your passions into a career And much more. Please enjoy, and reach out to Blake on his website! If you enjoyed this episode and the bits on turning your passion into a career, you’ll like my episode with Tasha Meys, where we talk about that and more. If you want more on the schooling system, be sure to listen to my episode with William Deresiewicz, where we discuss that in-depth. At age 33, Antonio Pondichi had gone from growing up poor in communist Romania, to move a comfortably luxurious life in New York City as an adult where everything he ever needed was planned for him. One day, as his daughter reached age 5, he began to realize that many of the things he had been taught about how to live and raise her weren’t true. He moved his family and his life to the valley of Vilcabamba, Ecuador to explore unconventional ways of living that would allow all of them to find their happiness. Many parents don’t realize that they are giving away the majority of their children’s upbringing to strangers who run the arbitrary schooling institutions of their culture. Schooling trains people in what to think, whereas a true education teaches people how thinking works. We can either acquire knowledge through inheritance from other sources or observing and reasoning it ourselves. The social environment of schooling is frequently destructive to self-esteem and normal bonding habits. Segregating children into groups based on age is arbitrarily limiting to their understanding of their place in the world. Forcing children to learn kills their desire to learn. They can no longer effectively follow their intuition about what interests them. Parents and teachers are often threatened by a child’s natural learning capacity. They unconsciously feel compelled to control it. If you see that the values of your culture are no longer serving you, you are obligated to question them. There is a natural separation now between upcoming generations and their parents who are stuck in old paradigms of growth. What was once considered the role of being parent is no longer true, and will continue to change into the future. Do you feel equipped to give your children everything they need to discover who they are and pursue their own highest education? Are you passing your inherited limitations onto the young people in your life? Have you ever heard of an abstraction? This is probably a new word to you but the meaning is not new to you at all. An abstraction is an idea but not the actual thing. Learning English can sometimes be an abstraction. When you go to a restaurant, you look at the menu, it's a piece of paper. It's what we call an abstraction. It's not anything you would eat. It's just words on a page. You can read the menu. When you read the menu, you'll get some ideas in your mind about what the dish will be, how it might taste, how it might smell. But that's not real, you're just imagining. It's all in your head, it's all an abstraction. You can't eat the menu. You can try, but you'd only be eating paper. You would get no taste or smell or nutrition from eating the menu. The menu is an abstraction, the meal is the real thing. The meal is the real life. And no matter how good the menu is, even if the description's amazing, it will never really give you the experience of eating the actual food. You need real world English, that's why I do this podcast. In my podcast, I don't talk about grammar rules. I talk about real life topics. Real world English. In this latest podcast, I talk about a book right now that I enjoy, "Dumbing Us Down". I talk about life strategies that I think might be useful or helpful to you. I talk in a very normal, real world, conversational way. I do this because you need real world English - real English learning! You don't need grammar rules, vocabulary lists, et cetera. Please join me as I discuss the importance of emphasizing word endings, new books I am reading and more about abstractions!
