Also How to Encourage Creativity in Your Child, here she talks about the six levels of higher learning which most schools teach only three. Lastly How to Raise a Hero God is the Master Storyteller He is crafting every chapter of HIStory to reveal His ultimate message. Who is your support team? Who are the people who know how to hold you (metaphorically and physically) when you're having a tough day? When you're experiencing shame? Not enough-ness? Guilt? Anger? Grief? It took me a long time to find these people and cultivate what we have, but here is a 3 Part Series with my support team and a peek behind the curtain into what our conversations look like (via phone because they all live outside MN). So many clients ask me: “How do I cultivate intimate friendships?” In a society wrought with fears and securities, it's so hard to trust anyone. It's hard to create a foundation of safety. Both parties need to be willing to take the risk and both parties need to be open and willing to hear how the other person wants to be loved. In this 3 Part Series, we talk to my 3 close friends — Tom, Amy, Hailey — checking in about the state of our friendship. What's working? What's not? What's hard? What's easy? They are raw recordings containing laughter, vulnerability, compassion, and love. We are all showing up with a lot of trust in these interviews. When trying to get better from mind body symptoms, the key is having the right information and feeling clear on what is happening in your mind that is helping you or harming you. In this episode of our How To Series, I distinguish between two types of questions — ones that come from a genuine desire to understand more and find advancement in the work and ones that, unbeknownst to the asker are driven by fear and doubt and are designed to get you even deeper in trouble with symptom life. I name these A and B questions so that we can start discussing this concept and how it may be affecting your ability to get better. A questions are the ones that come from a motivation to understand things better. You might think that all of your questions are like this, but this is one of the ways that doubt finds a way to bite you — by hiding in a question that really doesn't have an answer and is only designed to create confusion, fear, and a dead end. These types of questions are B questions. We all ask both kinds of questions, but it is vital that we learn to recognize when our questions are serving doubt and not ourselves. What we end up doing with these questions is also totally divergent, so the distinction is crucial. B questions are not to be taken seriously, because they actually have no good answers (by design, in fact…the more baffling they are, the happier doubt is with having this question on your mind), and aren't even questions, really. What they are is worries, fears, and doubts. Learn to ask the A questions and you will always make headway in your understanding, because that is their goal.
In this episode of our How To Series, I concentrate on how to think about symptoms when the primary profile the sufferer experiences is through the lens of not being able to stop focusing on the symptoms. This video will help you make the crucial distinction between a focus on the symptoms that is driven by obsessional thinking and the same presentation being driven by fear. I note that the pathway to getting the symptoms to recede is different in these two cases and lay out a plan for each. Mind body issues present in a variety of ways, but I have been getting a lot of questions, of late, about these issues of attending to the symptoms and not being able to move forward. When the focus comes from an obsessional personality, you need to use your emotions and power columns to refocus your thoughts in a more productive way. But when it is fear based, it is purely the work of the doubt column and the specific doubt needs to be articulated and contradicted with science and logic. Each column has its function and can help you to locate the nature of your particular struggle within the system. While attentional mind body issues have a doubt origin, the solution is quite different for different presentations, and these ideas should help you to distinguish between varying types and choose appropriate action steps accordingly.
In this segment of our How To Series, I focus in on the details of one way to channel anger, as I so often say can be useful in the power column. Stemming from one of my sessions, I realized the specific power of the word determination and what it means for you. I explore how, instead of being stuck with anger and having it grow in that frustration, you can use every ounce of it as fuel to keep you better motivated to make progress. Whether in relation to symptoms or not, problems will require a significant level of determination and I talk in this video about learning to anticipate the call to give up the fight — from depression, doubt, fatigue, or running out of gas. Another aspect of the how of it all is the different sources of motivation and energy. While intrinsic motivation can be fleeting, and self care (as important as it is) takes time and thought, anger is readily available as fuel virtually all the time. In the end, the main thing we get to in this video is this: It is a huge factor in getting better from mind body symptoms to be sure you win the battle against doubt and that is going to take a lot of work and determination. But you can do it and you can multitask by finding something productive to do with your anger, relieving it as such, and using the energy that is contained within it.
On this episode of our How To Series, I help you consider how depression can be seen like any other mind body symptom, as long as it isn't attached to major psychological catastrophes or medical conditions. The columns work, thankfully, can be a big help when you are feeling depressed because its application to this other kind of symptom does all of the same things — bringing the full emotions into consciousness so that they do not manifest as symptoms, reducing doubt by cutting through faulty narratives we have with or about ourselves, and increasing power by breaking us out of one of the least powerful positions possible: the state of depression. One of the things I cover in this video is how we can think of our own psychologies as having a structure — the consistent things that are always true — versus the moment to moment experience which dominates most things. Depressed thoughts try to fool us into thinking things are permanent and ‘structural' just as doubt does with triggers about physical symptoms. People are always looking for what makes sense and depression will attach to any plausible explanation it can and hide out there. Once we've ruled out a big, present day explanation for feeling depressed, we can attack these seemingly plausible ideas and expose them for what they are: illogical, nonsensical self-attacks. Depression derives much of its power by being seen as a different, harder to manage symptom than most. But this proves to not be true when we apply mind body thinking. It is our doubts that it can be managed this way that, at times, stands in the way.
On this episode of our How To Series, I share a new way of thinking about the columns work, and living in general, that can help you organize your experience between what I call the internal and external track. The key comes in recognizing that we are all taught to integrate everything into one way of operating, but this leaves us trying to deal with internal functions within the confines of the external environment. Instead of doing that, I recommend being able to think of yourself as being on two separate tracks: the internal and the external. On the external track, you will continue to strive to operate at the highest functioning level possible — doing good for others, behaving well, and even going for perfection as much as you want. You'll keep looking at nuances and taking the other perspective, etc. All good things to be doing! But, when it comes to your symptoms and your internal needs, you'll need another place to process these things. I present: the internal track! On the internal track, you deal with your emotional life almost entirely between you and yourself (occasionally, an external boundary is required if someone is crossing a line). Here is where all of those action steps of the mind I recommend can really take off: black and white thinking, for example, can be a place that is relatively permanent in your internal track, while you are only dipping into it on your external track. Putting the blame where it belongs can be the same, where you might put it there permanently internally, but make it not very relevant externally. Come check out this new way of organizing your thinking so that the columns become all that more effective.
In this episode of our How To Series, I concentrate on the nuts and bolts of what to do in the power column. We begin with the information from the emotions column and doubt column that require a power column solution. Included in this is the ongoing work of emotional themes as they relate to the core narrative. I cover the way fear flows from the doubt column into a needed intervention in the power column, and explore the same way this relates to level three doubt — doubts about the self and our ability to get better. Within the power column, itself, you're going to want to take two main actions, once your core narrative is created and some of your power column themes are outlines: 1) You'll need to compare what is going on in the present moment to the core narrative and find action steps that bring you back into alignment with the core narrative goals; and 2) You will be assessing your level of power with respect to yourself, others, and your symptoms, and adjusting accordingly when you slip out of power. One quick tip on the whole thing: knowing whether or not you are in power is as simple as assessing whether or not you feel good at a given moment. Once you've recognized when you are out of power, pinpoint what led to that feeling and then choose an action step that can address that problem.
In this episode of our How To Series, I share my rules of thumb for recognizing when you are ‘in trauma', so that you don't let this altered state of being lead you down the wrong path in dealing with your symptoms. First and foremost, being in trauma just doesn't feel good, so this is the first sign to look out for when assessing your state of mind. But you can also look for the following experiences that suggest an activated trauma system: Foggy thinking, feeling unsafe, increased symptoms, feeling angrier or sadder than the situation seems to call for, being dissociated (meaning, not able to be fully present or present at all), emotionally numb, having slowed thinking, sometimes craving some sort of drive being satisfied (eating, sex, alcohol or other drug cravings, etc.), feeling the need to please someone or desperate for them to accept you or forgive you or text you back or respond to a message of some other kind, etc. By knowing the things for which you need to look out to recognize trauma, you will be able to avoid the pitfalls of believing your own thoughts at such times — a key thing, because trauma related thinking can be not only skewed, but quite convincing. To use science and logic and have a clear head with which to combat doubt and fear, you will need to consider the likelihood that you are, at times, ‘in trauma'. This video can give you the guideposts to follow so you don't fall prey to thinking that doubt can use against you.
In today's How To Series, I take a look at how you can disentangle yourself from others in times of anger. This is no easy feat, as anger leads to a whole set of physiological constellations that perpetuate the feeling. In the meantime, it's hard to let go of anger because it often feels like it depends on how the other person handles it. This is one of the key variables in the whole experience of anger as we sort it out for ourselves: we need to get to a place where we do not need the other person for anything at that moment. Included in that, we have to get to a new understanding of the person that isn't based on the meaning their actions would have if WE did them, because they will often be operating from a completely different set of variables. Once you are able to settle into a new understanding, the entire experience changes and you can get focused on other parts of your experience again. In addition, when you recognize your own mission in life, you can recognize anger as a sidetracking from where you need to be.
In this episode of our How To Series, I took a request to create something to explain the columns and why they are necessary and helpful in a more basic form. The main point you will hear about is how the organization of the columns allows us not only to understand the mind body experience better, but helps us break down the problems we encounter into manageable parts. Because each column is well defined and has its own rules, people can use them to figure out which part of the mind body problem on which they are working. Each column also has a simple and clear set of goals. In the end, the columns system is designed to give you the most accurate information in an organized and accessible way. While it may start off as complicated for some, as I address your questions, the system becomes not only easier but automatic with increased understanding.
In this week's How To Series, I look at a major breakthrough you can have in your power column: the power of aloneness. When you feel lonely or alone in a bad way, it obviously doesn't feel good. But the upside of aloneness comes when you are living in the power column. When your core narrative is in place, you will understand who you are at your essence and you'll remember that no one else has a say in any of it. Through having that fully formed relationship with yourself, you can unlock a great power: you are on your own journey and no one else is in charge of anything! In a sense, this is true self-empathy, because you recognize that only you CAN be fully empathic to yourself. You are the only one who knows it all and, don't forget, it's your body that knows and represents it best of all. Your body is never wrong about your journey!
In this episode of my How To Series, I cover how to understand boundaries and how to set them effectively. As usual, I find that understanding what is going on underneath it all to be the best guiding principle with respect to figuring out how to do anything. With setting boundaries, the first thing you need to know is what it is you need and why. Once you figure out who you are, in any given situation — or generally, more importantly — you can then make more effective decisions. This also can help you disentangle from the needs of others when they do not need to be factored into your decision or way of setting up the boundaries. In addition to clarifying your set up in order to make boundary set up natural and easy, I distinguish between the kind of ‘self care' that actually harms other people, whereas good boundaries don't hurt anyone at all. Come find out how!

In this episode of my How To Series, I explain how you can use the logic that comes from our knowledge of body metaphors to be more certain of your TMS/mind body diagnosis. One of the central ways to do effective work in the doubt column is to recognize the convergence of evidence from all areas and I encourage people to not leave out what our spoken words tell us about what we must know. People can be ‘a pain in the neck (or ass), someone can ‘make you sick', you can literally get overheated when you are angry, and many, many more. Because metaphors come from actual lived experience, I point out how it strains logic to think these are just poetic statements, as opposed to revealing about what we know to be true of the mind body connection. As you work to pin doubt to the ground and get it to relent — because it will try to creep back in at every turn — you need to have every bit of logic you can at your disposal. Pay attention to the metaphors of the body and consider why they are such an ever present part of how we talk.
On this episode of my How To Series, I address the kind of mind body experience in which you just cannot stop thinking about the symptoms, which leads to their perpetuation. This is something I call ‘attentional TMS' or attentional mind body issues. It can be so hard to stop checking in on the symptoms to see if they might go away at all, but what this actually does is get those neurons firing and, simply by paying attention to the symptoms, you em up strengthening them, or even making them happen in the first place. As I lay out here, the antidote to attentional mind body issues comes in the power column. When you are aligned with yourself and your mission in life, you basically forget to attend to the symptoms. You have a different path forward in your life that feels good and this can help you lay other doubt to rest, stop checking symptoms, and live your life to the fullest.
On this episode of our How To Series, I lay out the various ways I think about the three columns — emotions, doubt, and power — so that you can not only form a good plan for recovery but also remember it, which will obviously be key to your getting better. It can often be hard, in the moment, to hold onto the information, even once you've been given it, because there can be so much anxiety in having symptoms or so much doubt that rises to the surface, leaving you confused, afraid, or riddled with questions. In the emotions column, it is most useful to only hold onto the broad strokes themes at the front of your mind. This way you are not overloaded with things to remember and you can get in the right ballpark with the ideas that can get you on the right path to the specific knowledge about what is leading to the onset or uptick in a symptom. As in organizing your computer, once you have those general files down, you can remember what is in each. Essentially, the themes are like buzzwords that allow you to bring in the details, which, after all, you actually know well! In the doubt column, we can rely on the three levels of doubt — is this a mind body symptom? Can those be addressed effectively? And even if it is, and they can, is this something that can work for ME? — and the four forms of doubt — lack of certainty, questions, confusion, and fear — to remind us of the general structure we need to know. Through this, we can then articulate the doubts more explicitly. Lastly, in the power column, the core narrative and the three types of power experiences — power with ourselves with others, and with our symptoms — help provide the structure that needs to be remembered. Once you have these key concepts and points of organization down, you'll have an easier time knowing what it is you might want to think about as you are actually walking around trying to get better. And this makes it all the easier to utilize when anxiety or panic comes up, because it is like practicing the right way to think so it is more automatic and effective.
On this episode of our How To Series, I discuss how to cope with other people's questions, opinions, aggression, and even invasions as we try to keep doubt at bay and recover from our pain and other symptoms. Since the mind body experience is not well understood by nearly everyone, we can often have a hard time explaining to others the very things we are just learning to settle for ourselves. Since reducing doubt is so critical for getting better, the negative influence of other people who don't understand is something we must keep in mind. Having your own story about each aspect of the work is incredibly important, so that you keep others from swaying you to unhelpful and inaccurate ways of thinking. I cover strategies to deal with people and what they say so that you can keep on the most direct pathway to recovery and not let anyone sidetrack you. Sometimes, you may have to not talk about it with certain people and we explore what their (usually not so conscious) motivations may be that can get in the way. Either way, you must remember that your recovery is for YOU and not THEM. Whatever it is you need to get better can be integrated into your growing, individual system, radiating out from my three column system. Other important ideas covered here include: Going back to black and white thinking, at times, to not get knocked into doubt by others; seeing through what other people grapple with about their own fears in relation to pain; remembering that, once you have discovered the idea behind mind body processes, you are way ahead of nearly everyone you know; and, most importantly, learning to not trust ‘experts' who know nothing about mind body experience, because they are, essentially, leaving out such a major part of the process as to become irrelevant in their thoughts. Protecting yourself from others — purposeful or inadvertent in their bad influence — is a very helpful aspect of recovery.
In the next installment of my How To Series, I help the viewer consider what it means to make a decision in their process of getting better, as many aspects of the journey do require subtle decisions we may not even realize we are either not making or are even set against. The key in using this information is to begin to explore if there are decisions that you didn't even understand could BE decisions! I go through the many things about which we cannot make decisions or do not have control, but, particularly in the world of the mind body connection, we can have fairly complete control with the right information. I'm not saying it's so easy, but more that things can make sense if we understand it properly, which can open doorways to getting better. One of those ways is in recognizing decisions we can make which we hadn't even been considering. Included in the kinds of decisions you might need to wonder about in this new paradigm: You might need to decide to pay more attention in the moments of your life, to let some things go and trust the process at other times, to let yourself become powerful where you may have been holding yourself back, or to make an external to internal change in your life. You might have to make more of a decision about who to trust in your healing process and what concepts make sense to you, or decide to give up a certain limiting stance. But, most of all, you have to make a decision — after some soul searching — about trusting your brain, trusting your body, trusting yourself, and the process that all three go through together.
In the latest episode of my How To Series, I look at how you all can handle the numerous experiences of aggression that inevitably come your way from other people. This video helps to organize your experience around what happens in your three columns — emotions, doubt, and power — when someone brings aggressive behavior, words, or feelings your way. One of the key aspects I focus on, in terms of how to understand anger from the outside is whether or not it is direct or indirect. I talk about the toxicity of indirect anger, whereas direct anger (though it can also be toxic) at least affords the opportunity to work it out well. Another section of the video takes a look at a number of aspects of aggression that can come out in indirect ways, so that you can learn to recognize it for what it is. The purpose of this is to then be better able to protect yourself from the negative consequences of aggression from the outside. I also cover how to distinguish when to try to address an angry situation with the other person in real life versus when you are better off finding an emotional handle internally. Finally, we explore ways of thinking that can help you to not be swallowed up or too provoked by the other person's aggression. This includes recognizing that other people's anger is really about a bad interaction they are having with themselves, that you power comes from YOUR relationship with yourself, and that having this kind of independence of feeling from others protects you and keeps you feeling safer in the world.
In my latest episode of the How To Series, I look at how to understand anger and aggression, and we get to focus on how to channel aggression best in our lives to be powerful, to crush doubt, and manage our emotional lives well. I begin with an exploration of Sarno's ideas about anger and the reservoir of rage, but I invite the viewer to take a more specified view with me so that awareness of anger becomes more effective in alleviating emotional symptoms. I also cover why anger is such a hard emotion for so many people of which to be aware, let alone to know how to handle. The focus of this video is not handling the aggression of others (that's next week!), but knowing how you are going to handle yours in the best way for you. One of the key components of this interaction with yourself is recognizing that anger can be a wonderful form of self empathy, in that it can occur when you do not like what is happening to the valued self. Seeing it this way allows us to begin to use anger effectively, as we learn to ‘be in our own corner' while not feeling so invaded or dominated by the other person. Ultimately, my goal in looking at anger is to be able to help you use it as fuel in your life, rather than having it eat you alive or weigh you down. Anger, as it turns out, is a big motivator and can align you with yourself. This is not so much about how you carry that out with other people, but how you view yourself. Connecting to your core narrative, wanting more for you, recognizing that your goodness or competence can lead to attack from others out of jealousy or feeling threatened, and many more action steps can lead to anger being energy to move forward in your life!
In this installment of my How To Series, I look at the important distinction between diagnosis and symptoms. So many of the people who come to see me either are saddled with a diagnosis that causes them to have significant worries and doubts, or are desperate for a diagnosis to explain what is going on for them. The problem? Neither of these situations is a good one and it is totally avoidable if we think in terms of symptoms and not diagnosis. One point that I lay out clearly in this video is that a diagnosis — outside of a life threatening, or life altering medical one — is really just a collection of symptoms that tell us WHAT is happening, but not why. This is why it is most useful to interpret most non-life threatening symptoms as just a description of what is happening, rather than a clear indication of the source. Thinking of symptoms instead of diagnosis also prevents you from getting locked into one way of thinking about things — especially important when the prevailing thought is incorrect — and opens the door to thinking more scientifically and critically so we can get to the bottom of the source of the symptoms. I look at some typical mental health diagnoses in psychology to show just how important this can be in getting you free of your symptoms and not feeling the doubt, fear, and limited thinking of diagnosis. I distinguish between clear cut cases of severe mental health issues, such as true metabolic bipolar issues or schizophrenia, as opposed to behavioral diagnoses that just say what someone is doing, feeling, or experiencing without causal connection. Use this video as a guide to help you consider whether or not you might have a mind body issue going on, rather than a ‘diagnosis'. Instead of diagnosing, we can conceptualize what is happening, by which I mean we can actually understand the cause of the symptom, instead of trying to describe the pathway it will likely take in made up diagnoses that are very often without accuracy or usefulness.
On our How To Series, we turn to the kind of symptom profile where people are fine at night, but find the days to be full of unbearable, hard to control symptoms. I look at what tends to make people suffer more during the day, while not suffering at night, just as I did in an earlier video with looking at nighttime symptoms for people who feel fine during the day. I take the viewer through the various steps I go through in searching for the various causes of my own symptoms, including cycling through the three columns — Emotions, Doubt, and Power — and the rules you can use to interpret the communication of the bodily symptoms correctly. For acute and erratic symptoms, look to the emotional themes you developed for your Emotions column. For chronic or patterned symptoms, look to your doubts and how they have crept back in. And when you can't find either, check in on whether or not you feel in power. We look at a variety of reasons for the daytime sufferer — though I also acknowledge there are plenty of people who suffer day and night and every other profile of which you can think. These include the emotional challenges that come with the tremendous demands of your day, the doubts that can creep in with so much information coming your way, or the challenges to power that come from aggression from others or societal opinions bombarding you. No matter the column, the daytime poses its unique challenges, just as nighttime does. Emotions and fear may be less active, but doubt and challenges to power tend to be even higher. I will keep exploring the various presentations of mind body issues, because the way we all can get better from them is to have a full understanding of what is happening.
On this episode of our How To Series, I share my tips on how to understand the unconscious mind. This is a crucial part of our understanding of mind body issues and very few people who are trying to get better from this kind of suffering are being given the base level of knowledge of it upon which they can interpret the unconscious motivation of their symptoms. I cover such topics as the unconscious not being able to recognize opposites, having no sense of time, having no regard or concern for contradictions, being driven to hide and show the meaning of the symptoms at the same time, and the unconscious thoughts and feelings having a natural drive towards the surface of anyone's psychology. I also discuss how the unconscious part of ourselves knows every aspect of things within us, which makes sense of how the body's symptoms seem to understand us better than our conscious selves. While these topics may sound full of jargon, in this video, I work to break the topics down into logical and clear ideas so the information of the body is all the more useful. On a related topic, I discuss the aggression that people have unconsciously, which helps to illuminate why anger has such a powerful relationship to symptoms. We explore how this relates to power and doubt, as well, as these are two cornerstones of my unique work in the mind body field. The reason I chose to do this video is that it is foundational to so much of the work, but not well explained in the literature and videos I have seen, leaving sufferers with understandable questions and confusion. Hopefully, people will begin to get a better understanding of the fascinating, but sometimes seemingly baffling, world of unconscious thought and feeling.
On our How To Series, we turn, today, to understanding mind body symptoms that manifest mainly (or exclusively) during the night. Each sufferer knows their own pain and symptoms profile and patterns quite well and many have asked me about what it means when they do not tend to have symptoms during the day, but frequently — or always — do at night. The first distinction I make in this video is that nighttime poses a different set of variables to deal with and, at some level, we know what is coming. Sleep is a time of separation from others and having to cope with our problems all by ourselves. Furthermore, it hearkens back to whatever this time was like in our childhoods, making it a time of particular vulnerability for everyone, even if many are not consciously aware of it. I talk about the connection to mortality issues and how it is a time that is also closer to unconscious processes, both of which contribute to the intensity and symptoms of this time of day. In addition to outlining the differences between daytime and nighttime symptoms, I offer a number of thoughts on how to use this information to have an easier time with nighttime symptoms. Included in this are the ideas of taking some time at night to focus on themes of the day or the major themes of your Emotions Column, bringing your intellect into your unconscious process more, understanding dreams, and knowing which kind of themes tend to apply to sleep. Each installment of the How To Series is designed to give you insight into another aspect of mind body living, including strategies to employ with this new level of understanding. I hope you all get a lot out of it and please put your comments below.

Welcome to another edition of the SwissPats’ How-To Series. In this episode Simon Thiriet, the head of communications for the Basel-Stadt schools, explains how the local Swiss schools work. About SwissPats How-To Series: Unlike our typical show that features a guest or our first-of-the-month What's Happening, our How-To Series is here to help those who are new to Switzerland or even those who have lived here for a long time. Hey, you might’ve forgotten what it was like when you first got here and didn’t know anything. In our How-To Series, we have sought out those in the known to help you navigate your life here in Switzerland. From getting the train, to taking out your garbage, there are rules, regulations and guidelines that we all need to follow. A lot of information is out there, but we wanted to bring it to you in a short, bite-sized podcast. Maybe you already have this stuff sorted out, but if you see a newcomer to Switzerland, send them our way and hopefully we can help make that transition to Swiss life a little easier.
Welcome to another edition of the SwissPats’ How-To Series. In this episode, Kate Bottriell explains how to buy and sell furniture - especially second hand - in Switzerland. When Bottriell arrived in Switzerland she had trouble buying good quality second-hand furniture, and thought that there was probably a better way. With a background in sustainable sourcing, she saw an opportunity to address a genuine need, while at the same time combine this with her passion to have a positive impact on the planet. The idea of ecochair.ch began to take shape. The webshop launched in January 2017 and the showroom opened in May of the same year.
