On the Analytics FC podcast, we’ll be putting out episodes every month with a thematic focus from using data to analyse injuries to quantifying the cognitive aspect of football, from working with agents to the use of tracking data. This week I spoke to Tom Worville about Analytics and the media, focusing on the challenges faced by presenting data to a public audience and asking what, if anything, analytics can learn from the use of data in the media space. Tom Worville was one of the founders of Analytics FC. From there, he went to Opta where he worked for four years. Since 2020, Tom has been The Athletic’s Football Analytics Writer where he has overseen the roll-out of a form of data journalism across their platform. Follow Tom on Twitter @worville and read his articles and listen to his podcasts at www.theathletic.com. Erik Wagner is Senior Director of Provider Strategy, Healthcare and Life Sciences at Salesforce, one of sponsors at Health:Further 2018. Erik has about three decades of experience in healthcare, working in multiple areas that all tend to revolve around healthcare IT. So he has a great understanding of what the digital side of healthcare looks like these days. In this conversation, we talk about the state of health IT in general, why a lot of supposedly consumer-friendly platforms (like patient portals) don't work, and the difference between just "checking boxes" and actually designing to engage people. Erik also talks about how Salesforce is used in the healthcare industry to solve some of these problems and give providers insight into the patients coming through their doors. It's patient engagement in real time. Check out the whole thing on the Health:Further blog here.

Men vad utelämnade tidningen?

In Episode 07 of the Analytics FC Podcast Sam and Tom are joined by Dustin Ward aka Saturdays on Couch. Before Dustin joins us we talk about the Women’s World Cup. Sam cries into his Canada scarf while we discuss the game, looking forward to the quarter finals and reminisce about a penalty shoot-out way back in 2007. When Dustin joins we discuss his background, recent work on Statsbomb and his influences behind his very popular and thought provoking piece about getting granular with analytics in football. We also talk more generally about Dustin’s work around bucketing teams together depending on their playing styles according to some preset metrics. Finally we also discuss the teams Dustin is looking forward to watching in the 15/16 season (yes, we are slowly previewing the new season!) and round off with Tom absolutely butchering the pronunciation of “Spielverlagerung”. A really fun discussion with some salient points about the buy in of analytics, the importance of visuals in the implementation of it and how tactical awareness is vital to introducing this sort of match-day analysis too.
