“I thought I met the man of my dreams, and he turned out to be one of the biggest con men in history,” shares Benita Alexander, a highly accomplished journalist and executive producer. In this episode, she joins Dr. Z to recount her harrowing experience with love fraud at the hands of Dr. Paolo Macchiarini. Benita's story, featured in the Netflix documentary “Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife” and the Wondery podcast “Dr. Death,” serves as a chilling reminder that even the most intelligent and successful individuals can fall victim to the manipulative blueprint of narcissists. Benita met Macchiarini during a vulnerable period in her life. His charm and apparent empathy quickly drew her in, leading to a whirlwind romance. However, as their relationship progressed, red flags began to emerge, which Benita initially dismissed due to Macchiarini's convincing explanations. Dr. Z and Benita explore the psychological impact of such a profound betrayal, emphasizing the difficulty of recognizing, and escaping from, a narcissistic abusive relationship. They discuss how factors such as intelligence and success do not necessarily immunize one from becoming vulnerable to this type of abuse. Benita's courageous decision to go public with her story underscores the need to raise awareness about the dangers of people like Macchiarini, who exploit their victims' trust for personal gain. Exploring the complexities of narcissistic abuse, the insidious nature of love bombing, and the resilience required to rebuild one's life after such a traumatic experience, this episode serves as both a cautionary tale and a source of inspiration for those who may find themselves entangled in similar situations. Quotes “Any narcissist's worst fear is the collapse—falling from the pedestal, their reputation being destroyed.” (36:35 | Benita Alexander) “It takes so much courage for a woman to come forward and expose herself like that. And then, on top of it, to get attacked—it's the reason people don't talk about this kind of thing. That's what's so concerning to me because if we stay quiet and if women don't feel comfortable enough to come forward and talk, it's going to keep happening. These people—narcissists, con artists, sociopaths, whatever you want to call them—count on you being quiet. They count on you being too embarrassed and humiliated to talk. That's why the lies keep escalating, because they don't think they're ever going to get caught.” (58:59 | Benita Alexander) “I think it's also important to realize—very, very important—not to blame yourself. I mean, what was your crime? You fell in love. You wanted to trust the person you fell in love with, and that's a very normal thing. You didn't do anything wrong. You were vulnerable. When you're vulnerable and you fall in love, there's a reason they say love is blind. But you never expect something this extreme to happen. You never expect someone to be lying to you about literally everything." It's Fraud Week on the Megyn Kelly Show, and we begin with the story of former NBC producer and journalist Benita Alexander, and her ex-fiancé Dr. Paolo Macchiarini. Alexander talks about how she met Macchiarini for a report she was working on about regenerative medicine, his personality and confidence, what drew her to him personally, the way he seemed with patients, how it started to fall apart, the tactics her fiancé used to keep up the fraud like "love bombing" and other signs of narcissism and arrogance, the thrill some people get from lying and conning people, the secret client list he said he had involving The Clintons and the pope, her fiancé's lies about the pope marrying them, his actual relationship with the Vatican, why he chose to amplify the lies he was telling, whether he was a pathological liar and sociopath, how she came to find out her fiancé had been living a double life and lying to her, the revelations about multiple families, what happened after she confronted him, how the con of Dr. Paolo Macchiarini was beyond just personal but professional and medical, the reality of the supposedly innovative plastic windpipe surgery he spearheaded, advice for other women on how to spot the red flags, and more. In this episode of Serial Streamers Jami recaps the docuseries, Bad Surgeon: Love Under the Knife. The 2023 Netflix docuseries highlights the story of Dr. Paolo Macchiarini, who is a world-renowned thoracic surgeon known for his work in regenerative medicine. For years, people believed Dr. Macchiarini was a trailblazer in the medical field and someone who worked tirelessly to save lives by transplanting lab-made organs into patients. What people didn't know was that Dr. Macchiarini was extremely reckless in his approach and fully aware that his poor track record, coupled with faulty plastic organs, would very likely lead to death. Yet, the conman persisted. Jami gives listeners a solid Cliffs Notes version of the docuseries, and doesn't hold back on how she feels about the man who she believes is a low-budget version of George Clooney's ugly distant cousin, at best.

Producent: Gustav Asplund.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
With major (alleged!) misconduct cases happening at some of the biggest US universities, scientific fraud has been in the news a lot recently. If you're a scientist you're supposed to be discovering the truth - so why do some scientists (allegedly - please don't sue us!) just make all their results up?In this episode of The Studies Show, Tom and Stuart discuss some outrageous instances of scientific fraud, and how they were discovered. They look at all the reasons a scientist might decide to break the rules and falsify or fabricate their data - and talk about ways we might try and prevent these scientific crimes in future.*EDIT 22 October 2023: In the podcast we say that Eric Stewart's papers were retracted for “fraudulent data”. Whereas he has been accused of fraud by at least one of his co-authors (and others), and whereas he claims to have lost all the original data files so they can't be checked, it's not correct to say this is why his studies were retracted, as per the publishers' retraction notes. They were retracted for gross errors and incompetence rather than fraud. The Studies Show is sponsored by the i, the UK's smartest daily newspaper. You can get a money-off deal on digital subscriptions—which include full access to all Stuart's science writing—by following this special podcast link. The Studies Show is also sponsored by Works in Progress, an online magazine about science, technology, and human progress. When former transplant surgeon Paolo Macchiarini first implanted a synthetic trachea into a patient more than a decade ago, it was hailed as a breakthrough. But the person he operated on died, as did subsequent patients. And in 2013, Macchiarini was reported to Sweden's Karolinska Institute, where he had carried out the operations, for scientific misconduct. Over the years, Health Check has followed the story and in this programme we hear the latest as Macchiarini appeals against a prison sentence in Sweden for gross assault. Claudia Hammond is joined by BBC health and science correspondent James Gallagher who has been finding out whether eating his meals quickly or slowly is better for his health. And he brings us news from the USA of one of the first functional kidney transplants from a pig into a human. Presenter: Claudia Hammond Producer: Dan Welsh
