A special live episode of our sister publication, Expected Goals, hosted by Maggie Murphy and Matt Cutler.Sponsored by Evelyn Partners. Expected Goals Live - Investment in Women's FootballEvent Summary & AnalysisThis live podcast episode from Expected Goals captured a pivotal moment in women's football investment, featuring industry experts discussing the money flowing into the sector and entrepreneurs pitching their businesses.Chapter 1: The Investment Panel - Who's Writing the Cheques?Participants: Nikki Boyd (Sphera Partners), Richard Thomas (Octo Sport), Olivia Hall (Firebird Collective), Anne Rodriguez (Pitch Wise Holdings)The panel revealed the sophisticated criteria investors now apply to women's football opportunities. Geographic positioning emerged as crucial - not just population size, but competitive landscape and heritage matter. The emphasis on academy programs signals investors are thinking beyond immediate returns to long-term player trading revenue, even though million-pound transfers remain elusive.Chapter 2: Global Hotspots - Where the Smart Money is GoingThe US market drew mixed reactions - acknowledged as having momentum but potentially overvalued. Europe, particularly the UK, emerged as the consensus sweet spot, with Australia flagged as "massively undercooked" commercially. The debate over closed versus open leagues revealed philosophical differences, with some investors preferring the security of closed systems while others saw promotion/relegation as adding necessary competitive tension.Chapter 3: Beyond Clubs - The Ecosystem PlayInvestors are increasingly looking beyond traditional club ownership to leagues, media companies, and ancillary businesses. The recent investment in the Upshot League (US women's basketball) exemplifies this approach - backing established operators entering structured ecosystems rather than entirely new concepts.Chapter 4: Advice from the Money - What Entrepreneurs Need to KnowThe panel's counsel was brutally practical: come with more than PowerPoint presentations. They want to see contracts, data, and proof of concept before writing cheques. The emphasis on resilience reflects the reality that this remains a marathon investment thesis.Chapter 5: The Broader Sports Landscape - Opportunities and ThreatsDiscussion expanded beyond football to sports like netball, volleyball, and emerging Olympic sports. The fragmentation risk in US volleyball - with four leagues competing for the same market - serves as a cautionary tale about premature market splitting.Unofficial Partner is the leading podcast for the business of sport. Today, we're launching a brand new show called Expected Goals, hosted by Matt Cutler and Maggie Murphy. Together Matt and Maggie will explore the business of women's football. Matt Cutler is the former editor of SportBusiness and was Director of Communications at Two Circles. As the head of Unofficial Partner Productions, Matt led on our hit series, The Pirates Versus The Premier League and the more recent Last Orders, on football's relationship with the pub. So he's the perfect person to be running the show alongside Maggie Murphy. Maggie was formally chief executive officer of Lewes Football Club and has been one of the most outspoken and most interesting contributors to the debate on the evolution of professional women's football over the last five years or more. She was a board member of the FA Women's Super League and Women's Championship Board, as an elected club representative onto that body. Before that she was director of public policy and sport integrity for the Sport Integrity Global Alliance and senior global advocacy manager at Transparency International. So we're in good hands. Expected Goals will sit outside of the usual Unofficial Partner channels. You'll find it on the Sport Social Network and in all the usual places, including Apple, Spotify and your favourite podcast app. Just search 'Expected Goals'. If you'd like to contribute questions and queries to the show, get in touch. You can email Matt at Matt@UnofficialPartner.co.uk. So listen to this setup episode and then tune in every Wednesday.

Mason Marchment in his second season with the Dallas Stars is en route to a career year. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey highlights the offensive numbers for Marchment and how they stack up against others on the Stars high powered offense. He's currently top five in points and ranks among the top in Expected Goals and Goals Per 60 while also being a physical presence. Not only is he on pace to break career highs in goals, assists and points, but he's drawn the most penalty minutes on the team by quite a margin. Like Tyler Seguin, he has certainly reaped the benefits of the Matt Duchene signing. The next topic revolves around tonight's game versus the Colorado Avalanche. The Avs are very top heavy, but with players like Nathan MacKinnon, Mikko Rantanen, and Cale Makar you can win a lot of games. This matchup is a huge test for the Stars at home coming off a game they should have been able to win if they did not surrender a three goal lead after scoring 11 seconds into the game. The final segment is another update on Jake Oettinger, who left his last start with a lower body injury on December 15. Head Coach Pete DeBoar changed the status from week-to-week, to day-to-day and stated that he is getting better every day. He has begun skating and doing more which is a great sign since Scott Wedgewood is going to make his 9th straight start. Otter is right around the corner and will hopefully be ready for this crucial stretch in the month of January. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey headlines with how the Stars will look without Jake Oettinger who suffered a lower body injury against Ottawa last Friday. We are expecting to get an update on the severity and possible time table for his return today. With Scott Wedgewood as the primary goalie, we're going to find out what the Stars made of during this stretch without Otter. Dallas has dropped to around middle of the pack in terms of goals against average which had been a huge strength of their play in recent seasons. They have been very inconsistent through the first 29 games, but have shown signs of dominating play like the 3rd period against St. Louis on Saturday. Part of the domination is when Miro Heiskanen and Thomas Harley are paired together. They rank the best pairing in Expected Goals percentage and Expected Goals For Per 60 minutes and rank 3rd in expected Goals Against per 60 minutes. Yes, having them play together may leave other pairs venerable, but not much else has worked out throughout the year so you mine as well see what you have with those two. It may solve short term issues until they get reinforcements. The final segment is a preview of the Seattle Kraken, the first meeting between the two teams since they met in the playoffs last year that saw the Stars win in seven games. The Kraken are struggling out of the gate, but have a combination of speed and physicality that has given the Stars their own set of problems this season. In this episode I chat to Rory Smith about his new book 'Expected Goals', which traces the growth of data in football and how it has influenced the game as we know it today. We talk about surprising early adopters, how players were able to skew early iterations of data, the way the use of stats is often at odds with the chaos of the game, poor communication, how things may develop in the future, and lots more – including how StatDNA put Arsenal ahead of the curve back in the day, but never really provided the kind of competitive advantage it might have. The book is fascinating for stats advocates, and stats skeptics alike – and you can order it now from your local independent bookstore.Follow Rory @rorysmithHere's the link to the article mentioned: https://www.arsenal.com/news/danny-karbassiyoon-first-team-itGet extra bonus content and help support Arseblog by becoming an Arseblog Member on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/arseblog Hosted on Acast. Locked On Avalanche - Daily Podcast On The Colorado Avalanche
We jokingly said that if you were a betting fan, bet the over in the Avs / Oilers game 1 matchup which was set at +/-6.5, That was eclipsed by the 2nd period. The Colorado Avalanche and the Edmonton Oilers put on an offensive show Tuesday night with the Avalanche hanging on to an 8-6 win, even though they were up at one point 7-3. No lead will be safe in this series. For the Avalanche there is the added question mark of starting goalie Darcy Kuemper. Kuemper left the game in the 2nd period and did not return with what was being called an upper body injury. It was being reported after the game that his removal was due to lingering issues with his eye that he suffered in the opening round against the Nashville Predators. This series might be up to Pavel Francouz now. With a score like 8-6 there are obviously good things and bad things that happened. Chris and Kyle are here to break it all down! Tune in and subscribe! Each action during a match changes the probability of scoring, and these changes can become part of a model of ball progression. Dan explains how expected goals from ball progression can complement expected goal from shot creation, both in evaluating players and in predicting results. He also shows how both kinds of expected goals can form the basis for tactical tools, sometimes most effectively when they work in combination.Support the show (http://smarterscout.com)
