In this week's Glass and Out episode, we welcome one of the top, young coaches in hockey. At just 35-years old, Matt McIlvane has quickly worked his way up the coaching ladder. Some of the accomplishments in his young career include becoming the head coach of EC Red Bull Salzburg, an Olympic Silver medal, and three DEL league titles. While you may not be too familiar with the name now, it likely won't be long before you we see him behind an NHL bench. Following a playing career in the minors, McIlvane began his coaching career at just 26-years old with the Danville Dashers of the now defunct Federal Hockey League. The following season, he would join Drake Berehowsky's staff in Orlando of the ECHL for one season. His first opportunity with EC Red Bull would come when his former coach, Don Jackson, invited him to Salzburg. After one season, both coaches would move to Red Bull's sister franchise in Munich of the DEL, where they built a dynasty that would capture 3 consecutive league titles.. Then in 2019, at the age of 33, McIlvane would move back to Salzburg to become the head coach of EC Red Bull. This past season, the club tasted playoff success, advancing to the semi-finals. In addition to his club duties, he was a member of Germany's coaching staff during their cinderella run at the 2018 Winter Olympics, where they captured a Silver medal. He was also recently a part of Germany's entry at the 2021 World Hockey Championships, where Germany advanced to the final four. Find out about his motivation behind an early entry into coaching, the importance of having good mentors, and what he's learned about creating a championship culture in this week's podcast!

Lamoureux had immediate success in the ECHL and AHL after graduating from a standout career at the University of North Dakota in 2007-08, but left for Europe after just three seasons in North America and never looked back. The only thing better than the story about why he left, which involves his boyhood idol Ed Belfour relaying how an NHL GM who signed him would probably never give him a chance simply because he is 5-foot-10, is the journey that has followed and experiences that helped him get keep getting better. The oldest of six siblings in a hockey family that includes US Olympic stars and gold-medal winning twin sisters Jocelyne and Monique, Lamoureux shares some of his lessons along the way, including early experiences with current Canucks goalie coach Ian Clark (“If he’s gonna carve me, i’ll give him the knife”), how early lessons on positioning and the recent emergence of box control have helped him thrive as a smaller goalie, the importance of visualization and flow state to his mental preparations, and a lot more. Lamoureux also touches on the goalie-themed children’s book his wife Kellie wrote (and a defensemen-themed follow up), and why he gives up half of his short offseason back home in the United States to coach other young goalies through private lessons and camps at JPL Goaltending, including an annual stop in Vegas. Lamoureux may not be the biggest goalie or a name everyone knows, but this interview is loaded with lessons that every goalie can benefit from.

Matt Addison speaks to Red Bull Salzburg head coach Jesse Marsch for an exclusive podcast. Marsch pitted his wits against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the Champions League earlier this season with his exciting young side stunning the defending champions by battling back from three goals down at Anfield before going down to a 4-3 defeat. But Marsch’s links with the Reds go much deeper than that. Marsch, of course, managed Takumi Minamino before he swapped Salzburg for Liverpool in January – and the American boss gives an insight into the Japan international’s character, his best position and why he will be a success on Merseyside. Marsch also worked with Timo Werner when he was assistant manager at RB Leipzig and so he is perfectly placed to let Reds fans know what they will be getting if the German striker signs for Klopp’s Premier League leaders. And how could we not ask Marsch about Erling Haaland, the goalscoring phenomenon who also left Salzburg in January, and who has been linked with making the move from Borussia Dortmund to Liverpool in the future? And if that’s not enough, Marsch also explains the links between Liverpool and the Red Bull corporation – plus THAT half-time video from the away dressing room at Anfield in October.
