Whose agenda is primary in your life? Sometimes our faith and our prayers look like us imposing our agenda on to Jesus. In John 11, Jesus is surrounded by people trying to do this. How does He respond and react? And what does His statement, "I am the resurrection and the life" teach us about the way He wants to relate to us?
In this message, Sam Jackson helps us to understand the rich context behind Jesus's declaration, "I am the light of the world." We are surrounded by 'lights' that claim to illuminate our paths giving us meaning and purpose, and ultimate satisfaction. Jesus claims to be the only light that can truly light up our lives. What light are you following as you navigate the darkness in this world?
Do you consider yourself cool? Americans were asked a simple question: How cool do you think you are? 16% say they're very cool, 39% say they're somewhat cool, 24% say they're not very cool, and 12% say they're not at all cool. This Easter message invites us to behold Jesus as the true King, revealed not in power as we expect, but through His death and resurrection. Focusing on Thomas' journey from doubt to faith, it shows how encountering the risen Jesus transforms everything, leading to the declaration, “My Lord and my God.” The sermon speaks to anyone wrestling with doubt or disappointment, inviting us to believe that Jesus is alive, offers forgiveness through the cross, and gives new life by His Spirit to all who believe.
This week the boys have some fun with tangents before rolling into a deep discussion about the new Spiderman trailer, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, and finally a nice recap of this year's Academy Awards. In the words of the great Sam Jackson, "Hold onto your butts"!!
In this message from John 1:29–34, the focus is on John the Baptist's declaration, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” John uses his influence not to draw attention to himself but to point people to Jesus, revealing Him as God's provision for the forgiveness of sins and the fulfillment of God's promises. The sermon explores two key questions that arise from John's testimony: What are you beholding? and What are you being filled with? As believers fix their attention on Jesus—the Lamb of God who removes sin—they are invited not only to receive forgiveness but also to be filled with the Holy Spirit. The message calls listeners to continually behold Jesus, allowing their focus on Him to shape their inner lives and open them to the transforming work and fullness of the Spirit.
In this message on John 2:1–11, the story of Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding in Cana is explored not just as a miracle but as a sign revealing something deeper about who Jesus is and what He came to do. By transforming water from ceremonial purification jars into the best wine, Jesus points to the greater work He would accomplish at the cross—replacing inadequate religious rituals with the abundant grace of forgiveness through His sacrifice. The sign also reflects the broader biblical theme of the wedding celebration between God and His people, pointing forward to the ultimate “wedding supper of the Lamb.” Just as Jesus turned a moment of potential shame for the bride and groom into joy and honour, He takes humanity's shame and provides lasting joy through His death and resurrection, inviting believers to fix their eyes on Him and persevere in faith.
This message explores the powerful biblical call to “make room” for others to encounter Jesus, drawing from the story in Mark 2 where four friends go to extraordinary lengths to bring a paralysed man to Christ. Highlighting both the man's physical healing and spiritual restoration, the message emphasises how collective, active faith can create life-changing moments for others. Through personal stories and real examples from church life, Sam challenges listeners to shift from being people who simply receive space to becoming people who intentionally create it—making room in their calendars through prayer, in their communities through hospitality and discipleship, and in their church through growth and service. Ultimately, it invites believers to partner with Jesus' mission of transformation, trusting that when we make room for people, we create opportunities for them to encounter God and experience His life-changing grace.
Vision Sunday 2026 calls our Gateway family to do what matters again - to pray again, to plant again, to prioritise people again, and to share Jesus again. Jason & Susan Elsmore share vision for the year ahead, including 21 Days of Prayer & Fasting, future campus planting, and a renewed focus on life groups, serving, and welcoming others, while celebrating God's work through Gateway Beyond and Emily's powerful testimony of coming to faith. Sam Jackson then inspires us to be like the little boy who shared his lunch, believing that Jesus can multiply again and again whatever it is we bring to Him in childlike faith.
KPFA Theatre Critic Richard Wolinsky reviews “The Mountaintop” at Oakland Theatre Project through Feb. 15, 2026. TEXT OF REVIEW: In late 2008, it felt as if we'd entered a new world. The Republicans were out of office, people of color were being appointed to key positions in business and government, and a black man had just been elected president. Martin Luther King's dream seemingly had come true. Stories of his infidelities had come to light two decades earlier, and he'd been shown to have, as they say, feet of clay. He was no longer a god, but he was a hero. And Obama's election had proven it. And in June 2009, The Mountaintop, a play by Katori Hall, about the last evening in the life of Martin Luther King, premiered in a small theatre in London, later moving to the West End, and coming to Broadway two years later. Now, under a very different national circumstance, The Mountaintop can be seen in an Oakland Theatre Project production, which runs through February 15th, this coming weekend. We are in Dr. King's room at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, just after his sermon, I've Been to the Mountaintop. Rain pounds the windows, lightning flashes, lights go on and off. He's sent his assistant out looking for cigarettes and he's waiting impatiently. He calls room service for coffee. A maid quickly appears. They chat, flirt, and then things take a surprising turn. In this staging, King's motel room is also his tomb. We are not quite in the real world. But Dr. King, as performed brilliantly by William Thomas Hodgson, feels definitely real, as does Sam Jackson as Camae, the maid. Also real is the intimacy of the theatre, especially during the play's various moments of crisis, when the audience feels like part of the production. The times are very different now than back in 2009. As the co-director of the production Michael Socrates Moran writes in the program, today It may very well be that the fate of our democracy hinges on the capacity of citizens to engage in non-violent resistance against armed federal paramilitary troops. He goes on to say that, Dr. King's worldview stands as a bastion for radical humanization not only in the face of fascism, but also in the face of a status quo that privileges peace over justice, equality and freedom. In 2026, Dr. King's mountaintop feels even further away than it did nearly sixty years ago, and what felt triumphant then takes on an irony nobody could have expected. But the play's focus on King's humanity and the humanity of his message still remains, as does the power of theater in this formidable production The Mountaintop plays at Oakland Theatre Project through February 15th. For more information, you can go to oaklandtheatreproject.org. I'm Richard Wolinsky on Bay Area Theatre for KPFA. The post Review: “The Mountaintop” at Oakland Theatre Project appeared first on KPFA.

In this message on Psalm 111 (and 112...), we explore the idea that we often want the benefits of God's kingdom without truly knowing or submitting to the King. Using the metaphor of electricity—loving the power but resenting the provider—the sermon shows how Psalm 112's picture of the “good life” can only flow from a right understanding of the God revealed in Psalm 111. Together, these paired psalms reveal a God who is great, majestic, holy, and awesome, yet also gracious, merciful, and faithful—both transcendent and immanent. This tension is ultimately resolved in Jesus, where God's justice and mercy meet at the cross. The message calls us, at the start of a new year, to fear the Lord, ponder His works, delight in His commands, and extol Him with our whole hearts—because the true fruit of the kingdom is found not in chasing blessings, but in knowing and worshipping the King.

Is it only April? We hope everyone has been doing well and hanging in there. Hopefully today's episode will help up lift some spirits because we've got a fun one with 1995's Die Hard With a Vengeance. Not only was Jordan surprised to learn this is actually the third film in the series, but also that it could have also co-starred Laurence Fishburne instead of Sam Jackson. It also lets us ask a lot of important questions like who was the first Black person to save the world on film and what if Simon Gruber asked questions only about Black history? Our book club is starting up soon! Coming up on Sunday April 27th we'll be discussing Eve Ewing's Original Sin which explores the intentional failures of America's education system when it comes to Black and Indigenous children specifically. We'll be talk about it on our IG (@whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod) and on our discord so be sure to join us on both. We'll be back in two weeks with Academy award winner Adrian Brody in the very confusing Chinese blockbuster, Dragon Gate.
