Up until now, only two goalkeepers to have appeared on the Goalkeepers' Union Podcast could lay claim to winning a European trophy. Alex Stepney and Peter Schmeichel now have company in the form of Czechia's Tomas Vaclik. After rising through the ranks on home soil, a multi-title winning move to Basel preceded a sunshine switch to Sevilla where he was present for one of the many Europa League's claimed by the club. A starring role at Euro 2020 followed before a tumultuous spell at Olympiacos prompted an unexpected foray into the English game. Thirteen games later and Tomas had helped to aid Huddersfield's great escape from Championship relegation last season. Now, as one of goalkeeping's very attractive free agents this summer, he talks to GKU about life in Leeds, adapting to new techniques in each country and learning from fellow countryman and Premier League Hall of Famer, Petr Cech. NB: This episode was recorded a week prior to the end of last season.

It's the King's coronation weekend, King Charles III gets crowned, and it's a big topic which Will & Ben take very seriously. The boys also realise that recording just 5 days apart and going for a beer the day before recording means they have very little to talk about for the pod, but still fill an hour with ease. It's another double gameweek in the Premier League, with some surprise results for Liverpool & Man Utd. Napoli finally seal the Serie A Title, Celtic conquer Scotland (again) and Guillherme argues with Ben. The Bundesliga is full of goals again, La Liga is all but wrapped up by Barcelona after Real Madrid drop points again, and Brest are most definitely safe in Ligue 1.The Premier League Hall of Fame inducted 3 new players this week, Rio Ferdinand, Petr Cech & Tony Adams join the already impressive list, in addition to the two legendary managers of the Premier League Arsene Wenger & Sir Alex Ferguson. Will & Ben continue their Premier League all star players with the LM/LW position hotly contested.#DropThePod Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Martin Wickham to look back at a frustrating draw against Everton at the Bridge. In part one we ask why did Potter shut up shop at 1-0? Was it Brightonesque or an attempt at game management? We look at the substitutions. Gallagher for Pulisic? Why not Mudryk? Cheek for Kovacic and Chalobah for Fofana - understandable but Chukwuemeka for Felix? In part two we look at the poor defending by Koulibaly and Kepa's errors for Everton's 2nd goal. The result was frustrating and felt like a defeat and it seems like when Chelsea don't win the negativity starts. However, Chelsea looked fluid for much of the match, although still profligate and the defence was immense bar the two errors for the goals. So, are we getting in a stew about nothing? In part three we give a very warm welcome to Garry Hayes and Ceri Levy from The Chels podcast to talk about their new project: The Blueprint: How Chelsea FC Changed Football, a brand-new narrative podcast series covering the rise of Chelsea FC and the club's role in shaping modern football, has debuted with an extremely rare and exclusive interview with former Chelsea FC owner Ken Bates. From fearing for their very existence to conquering Europe and winning the Champions League all within two decades, the story of modern Chelsea FC is unlike any other. Stamford Chidge & Jonathan Kydd are joined by Chelsea author Mark Meehan to look back at Chelsea's 2004-05 season. On the 2nd June 2004, something very special happened at Chelsea. Jose Mourinho arrived proclaiming himself the 'Special One' and things at Chelsea would arguably never quite be the same again. Bolstered by the transfers of Petr Cech, Paulo Ferreira, Arjen Robben, Didier Drogba and Ricardo Carvalho hopes were high that Chelsea might go one better than the 2nd place in the league from the previous season and win their first Premier League title; their first league title for 50 years and in what would be their centenary year. The bouyant mood of the summer seemed justified as Chelsea remained unbeaten in all competitions until October 16th. But after the 1-0 away defeat to Man City, they picked up the pace again, knocking Arsenal off top spot on November 6th after a 1-0 win at home to Everton.Critics and naysayers accused Chelsea of being boring and functional as they ground out a lot of 1-0 wins, but once the flying wingers of Damien Duff and Arjen Robben returned from injury, Chelsea went up through the gears putting four past opponents regularly and playing scintillating football in the process. Equally important, they had not been beaten by title rivals such as Arsenal, Man Utd and Liverpool and had dismissed bottom half teams with relative ease, banana skins and glorious unpredictability seemingly banished by our 'special' manager.By the end of the year Chelsea were top of the league, 7 points clear with 55 points, the largest points tally at this stage in the PL ever, and were fighting for trophies on all fronts with qualification for the Champions' League round of 16 achieved with 13 points and a Carling Cup semi-final against Man Utd to look forward to in the New Year as well as the FA Cup.Historically, Chelsea supporters would be asking the question "what could possibly go wrong" with knowing cynicism but at the turn of the year many genuinely felt, absolutely nothing. Most footballers are men of many talents. And although football is their priority, they still try to make time for those other hobbies and try to explore their other talents. In this video, we will be looking at 10 top footballers who have tried their hands on music at one point or another. Many of them actually had a good go at it, while some were just straight-up hilarious. 1. Erling Haaland 2. Memphis Depay 3. Jese 4. Kevin Prince Boateng 5. Ronaldinho 6. Rio Ferdinand 7. Petr Cech 8. Wojciech Szczesny 9. Lionel Messi 10. Mario Balotelli
For footballers, what's the one thing that puts them at risk of this condition? Headers! Over the years, we have seen different footballers come out in bad condition after going in for an aerial duel. Some start bleeding on the spot. Some are disoriented for some minutes due to being concussed. Oh, by the way, statistics show that 22 percent of injuries in football these days are concussions. That shows you how common they are. Some require an ambulance to take them off the pitch like Ronald Araujo against Celta Vigo. Some crack their skulls like Petr Cech. Some even nearly lose their lives on the spot, Raul Jimenez against Arsenal in 2020 being a pretty recent example. Now, these are the ones with immediate and obvious impacts. What's scary is that, sometimes, a player could win a clear header and feel perfectly normal at that moment, but that could be contributing to their risk of suffering from CTE later in life.
