WES BROWNE chats to Scott Blackburn & Paul Burke about his noir THEY ALL FALL THE SAME, (US Amazon link) why it wasn't called Spoon, the Appalachians, North Carolina, pizza and community. They All Fall the Same: Cannabis kingpin Burl Spoon has reigned over the Jackson County area for three decades, building a powerful backwoods empire. But behind a well-run organization, his personal life is crumbling - his daughter can't stay clean; his son has hated him since coming out; and after enduring years of infidelity, his wife is straying too. The only person not on his payroll who still adores him is his six-year-old granddaughter, Chelsea. When his daughter overdoses on heroin laced with fentanyl and one of his employees is murdered, Burl's retaliation against Clovis Begley, the patriarch of the heroin-dealing family involved in both deaths, is inevitable. As Burl's plan spirals into a firestorm of vengeance that threatens the safety of his granddaughter, his drive for revenge conflicts with his longing for redemption. On the brink of losing everything, Burl must find a path between retribution and protecting what's left of his family.Wes Browne has lived and practiced law as a criminal defense attorney, prosecutor, and public defender in Appalachian Kentucky for over twenty-four years. In a special edition guest presenter SCOTT BLACKBURN chats to HENRY WISE about his debut novel HOLY CITY*, MFA programmes, writing-working-family, begin with a million words. Available 6/4 in USA.HOLY CITY After a decade of exile precipitated by the tragic death of his mother, Will Seems returns home from Richmond to rural Southern Virginia, taking a job as deputy sheriff in a landscape given way to crime and defeat. Impoverished and abandoned, this remote land of tobacco plantations, razed forests, and boarded-up homes seems stuck in the past in a state that is trying to forget its complex history and move on.Will's efforts to go about his life are wrecked when a mysterious, brutal homicide claims the life of an old friend, Tom Janders, forcing Will to face the true impetus for his return: not to honor his mother's memory, but to pay a debt to a Black friend who, in an act of selfless courage years ago, protected Will and suffered permanent disfigurement for it.Meanwhile, a man Will knows to be innocent is arrested for Tom's murder, and despite Will's pleas, his boss seems all too content to wrap up the case and move on. Will must weigh his personal guilt against his public duty when the local Black community hires Bennico Watts, an unpredictable private detective from Richmond, to help him find the real killer. It would seem an ideal pairing--she has experience, along with plenty of sand, and Will is privy to the details of the case--but it doesn't take long for either to realize they much prefer to operate alone.Bennico and Will clash as they each defend their untraditional ways on a wild ride that wends deep into the Snakefoot, an underworld wilderness that for hundreds of years has functioned as a hideout for outcasts--the forgotten and neglected and abused--leaving us enmeshed in the tangled history of a region and its people that leaves no one innocent, no one free, nothing sacred.Henry Wise is a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and the University of Mississippi MFA program. A writer across multiple genres, his poetry has been published in Shenandoah, Radar Poetry, Clackamas, Nixes Mate Review, and elsewhere. His nonfiction and photography have appeared in Southern Cultures. Holy City is his first novel.Scott Blackburn is an English instructor and a 2017 graduate of the Mountainview MFA program. He lives in High Point, North Carolina with his wife and two children. When he is not writing and teaching, Scott enjoys training in combat sports such as boxing, Muay Thai, and Ju-jitsu, in which he holds a black belt.Recommendations Ted Flanagan, Polly Stewart, Eryk Pruitt, James A McLaughlin, Chris Offutt, Eli Cranor, Megan Abbott, SA Cosby.Wesley Browne They All Fall the SameRichard Price Lush Life William Faulkner SanctuaryJoseph Conrad Lord Jim*Amazon linkPaul Burke writes for Monocle Magazine, Crime Time, Crime Fiction Lover anProduced by Junkyard DogCrime TimeCrime Time FM is the official podcast ofGwyl Crime Cymru Festival 2023CrimeFest 2023CWA Daggers 2023& Newcastle Noir 20232024 Slaughterfest, National Crime Reading Month, CWA Daggers

Backed with campaign funds from the owner of the local strip club, ex-state trooper and recovering alcoholic Henry Malone's running for sheriff. But because he can't say no to a bad idea, he also agrees to look for a pregnant woman's missing ex-con boyfriend. With his well-armed AA sponsor Woody in tow, Henry's search for the boyfriend soon connects with a homicide investigation run by Lt. Jackie Hall—probably the last cop in West Virginia who still likes Henry.A violent confrontation leaves Jackie near-death and Henry determined to find justice. Except vengeance isn't simple for Henry, especially when an old enemy appears out of nowhere, more bodies stack up, and a series of betrayals and double crosses climax with a morning assault on a farm house that pits Henry and Woody against a deadly band of criminals with nothing to lose.Critical Acclaim for Because the Night:“Henry Malone deserves to be up there with Matt Scudder and Harry Hole among our best, funniest, toughest detectives, and James D. F. Hannah is among our best chroniclers of America's sketchy underside.” —Nick Kolakowski, author of Love & Bullets and Boise Longpig Hunting Club“James D.F. Hannah delivers another dose of heart, humor, and haymakers to the Henry Malone series with Because the Night, leaving us clawing at the pages, and proving why he's one of the best writers working today.” —Eryk Pruitt, author of Something Bad Wrong“Private eye Henry Malone is a worthy descendant of both Robert B. Parker's Spenser and Elmore Leonard's Raylan Givens, and he carries on the family tradition in style in Because the Night. James D.F. Hannah delivers a backwoods barroom brawl of a novel that will leave you bloodied and ready for more.” —Scott Von Doviak, author of Lowdown Road and Charlesgate ConfidentialSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Jesse was an All-American young man who was voted Most Likely to Succeed. Patricia was an All-American young woman on track to become a nurse. When the two met, sparks flew. Even though they were usually separated by distance, they knew they would be together forever. On February 12, 1971, Jesse unexpectedly showed up at Watt's Nursing School in Durham, North Carolina, where Patricia attended, to take her to the Valentine's Dance. The two had a fantastic night at the dance, then left at 11:30 to go to Lover's Lane. When the two failed to return home, friends and family knew something was wrong and began searching for the two lovebirds. Then on February 25, a land surveyor found what he thought was a mannequin leg covered with leaves deep in the woods, only four miles from Jesse and Patricia's last known whereabouts. Upon closer look, he saw the bodies of Jesse McBane and Patricia Mann. They had been tied to an oak tree and covered by leaves and debris. Their hands were tied behind their backs, and a rope was around their necks. This case has remained unsolved for fifty-two years and needs closure. Join Cam and Jen as they go over the case along with the three main suspects. Diesmal Stewart O'Nan "Ocean State", Paul Beatty "Tuff" und Scott Thornley " Der gute Killer ".

Eryk Pruitt joins us to discuss King's 1984 short story "Mrs. Todd's Shortcut" from SKELETON CREW. In this story, we learn about the divide between the summer people and locals in Castle Rock and where exactly this magical town might be found on a map of Maine. Also, did King subtly hint at his future evolution into bulky books early on in this tale? All of that and more in the last CRR of the year. Eryk Pruitt's newest novel is WHAT WE RECKON and he has a true crime podcast coming out soon called THE LONG DANCE. Make sure to subscribe for updates. Today's song is "Suck City" by Black Math.
