As the Los Angeles area wildfires exploded in early January, a nonprofit organization called MySafe:LA leapt into action, disseminating timely information to guide residents through the chaos. But public messaging is just one of countless ways the group has worked to boost safety in greater LA. Over almost 20 years, MySafe:LA has grown into one of the most unique and comprehensive public/private safety and resiliency organizations in the U.S. Today on the podcast, we talk to David and Cameron Barrett, the husband-and-wife duo who founded and run MySafe:LA, about their organization, its role during and after the LA wildfires, and how safety-minded citizens in other cities can build their own programs to boost resiliency where they live.   Links:  Check out the MySafe:LA website Check out the Safe Community Project website Check out the group's wildfire preparedness page Check out the new podcast Rebuild:LA See NFPA's Outthink Wildfire, and its community risk reduction resources

In this episode, Monika delves into the RBI's decision to maintain the repo rate at 6.5% despite market expectations of a 25 basis point cut. She explains the repo rate's role as the interest rate at which the RBI lends to banks, influencing liquidity and inflation. The decision stems from the central bank's inflation-targeting mandate, which restricts easing rates amidst high inflation. However, the RBI cut the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) to 4%, injecting ₹1.16 lakh crore into the banking system. Monika further discusses the rationale behind the RBI's cautious approach. While core inflation remains within target, persistently high food inflation limits the scope for rate cuts. The CRR reduction is seen as a move to boost liquidity, with many viewing it as a precursor to a potential rate cut in early 2025. Lower growth forecasts and rising inflation add complexity to the economic outlook, reflecting the challenges of balancing growth and stability. The episode also covers the concept of bond duration, a critical measure of interest rate risk in debt instruments. Monika explains how duration quantifies the sensitivity of bond prices to interest rate changes. Longer durations mean greater risk as bond prices drop sharply when rates rise. This segment sheds light on how advisors evaluate debt funds based on duration to align risk with investors' goals, ensuring informed decision-making in volatile markets. Listener queries focus on practical financial challenges. Miranda seeks clarity on mutual fund redemptions, comparing lump-sum investments and SIPs for short-term goals, and understanding the first-in-first-out rule for selling units. Nishant, a PSU employee, explores strategies to invest ₹18 lakh gifted by grandparents for his daughters' future while weighing the merits of NPS Vatsalya versus index funds. Finally, Bunti seeks guidance on claiming bank FDs without a nominee, underscoring the importance of updated nominations and succession planning.

One of the least exciting jobs for a firefighter is the dreaded Community Risk Reduction assignment. In an urban environment, CRR may mean doing a meeting with the people you serve. Or maybe you're changing smoke alarm batteries.Either of those—not exciting, but not so much work, either. But if your department covers urban and rural areas, where you could be tasked to fight a brush fire, well, now you may have to do some physical labor ... plus those meetings. Not all, or even many, departments have dedicated crews to community risk reduction. Often, CRR is one person, whose job may include other responsibilities.Today, I'm talking with one of our favorite guests, Chad Costa, about what CRR can do for your community…and what you can get out of it, too.Chad is assistant fire chief for the Petaluma, California, fire department. He has over 25 years on the job.

“Does the job serve you, or do you serve the work?” Meridian (Idaho) Fire Chief Kris Blume wants us to consider our opportunity to serve the work every day, doing the things that don't always get noticed because it's the right thing to do in order to be excellent at the craft. But how do you engrain this mindset in the membership? It all comes back to culture. Blume talks all things culture change: the fire department culture diagnostic, the speed of change (from turning around a battleship to maneuvering a speedboat), and the role of mission-driven culture in empowering members to make smart decisions rooted in reason, not fear of reprimand. Plus, we dig into all this: The book Blume deems the most important for the fire service; 3 ways to embrace an “upstream mindset”; Blume's passion for strategic, integrated CRR; and The journey from “burnout medic” to passionate fire chief – and how he's paying it forward now. ré·su·mé [rez-oo-mey, rez-oo-mey]noun1. a summing up; summary.2. a brief written account of personal, educational, and professional qualifications and experience, as that prepared by an applicant for a job. In Comic Reader Résumé, I use Mike's Amazing World of Comics to travel back through time via his virtual newsstand to the genesis point of my lifelong collecting of comics. From there, I can offer a “work history” of my fandom through my active purchasing of (relatively) new comic books beginning in January of 1982, when my interest in the medium went from sporadic and unformed to routine on through compulsive accumulation. To streamline the narrative and keep the subjects at least remotely contemporaneous, I will not generally be discussing what we call back issues: books bought long after their publication date. Sometimes, I will cover a book published on a given month that I picked up within a year or so that date, and I give myself an especially wide berth on this aspect in the first couple of “origins” episodes. We'll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.) It's part personal biography, part industry history, and admittedly totally self-indulgent on my part. #CRRésumé? rolledspinepodcasts@gmail.com Comment on Résumé page or Rolled Spine Podcasts. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/diabolu-frank/message

In this episode, Katie talks with CRR co-founder Faith Fuller about the recent release of her new book, ‘Relationship Matters: A New Paradigm for an Evolutionary Leap in Relationship.' Relationship Matters is now available to purchase online from Amazon, and there are hardback, paper cover and Kindle editions available. An audiobook version is coming soon. From family and friends, to romantic partners, professional interactions, and community connections, relationships are an integral part of life. Just as our heart pumps blood throughout our physical bodies to keep us alive, relationships are the lifeblood that helps keep our social and emotional worlds going. Despite the importance of relationships, many of us struggle when it comes to creating healthy and meaningful ones. We are incredibly advanced in science, technology, and medicine – yet when it comes to getting along with others we struggle. Fortunately, there is a better way to approach any relationship in life—and Relationship Matters will show you how. First, you will learn that relationships operate as interdependent, interactive systems. In fact, in any relationship at any level, there is a relationship between the two parties – known as the “third entity” – that is greater and more powerful than the separate individuals in that system. No matter how close or distant a relationship may be, the third entity is always present and available for you to tap into, with its reservoir of deep wisdom. In Relationship Matters, Faith Fuller reveals the universal principles that underpin all relationship systems, which will ultimately help you:Understand what relationship intelligence is and why it is critical to human evolutionDevelop Relationship WarriorshipUnlock the hidden potential in conflictIdentify new options for navigating difficult relationshipsBuild life-changing relationships - especially with yourselfRelationships aren't something you “do” in your spare time – they are embedded in everything you do! By understanding these relationship systems, you will finally be able to cultivate positive, healthy relationships within yourself and with those closest to you, while contributing to the evolution of relationships on a global level…because all relationships matter. Faith Fuller is co-founder and President of CRR Global. She is a psychologist and experienced trainer and coach, with over 20 years of experience in working with organizations, couples and communities. Faith takes a systems approach to coaching, namely that all aspects of the system need to be addressed in order for effective change to occur. Her particular skill is empowering powerful, productive and joyous relationships in couples, partnerships and teams . She also has a background in consultation, team building, conflict resolution and community crisis intervention. For over 20 years, CRR Global has accompanied leaders, teams, and practitioners on their journey to build stronger relationships by focusing on the relationship itself, not only the individuals occupying it. This leads to a community of changemakers around the world. Supported by a global network of Faculty and Partners, we connect, inspire, and equip change agents to shift systems, one relationship at a timeWe believe Relationship Matters, from humanity to nature, to the larger whole.

This September, The Coast Range Association, along with partners like 350pdx, Indigenous Environmental Network, Rainforest Action Network, the Pacific Northwest Forest Climate Alliance, and many more, organized a major protest and counter conference in response to the Who Will Own The Forest timber investor conference. If you aren't familiar with the Who Will Own the Forest Conference, I'd encourage you to listen to the episode with Brenna Bell of 350pdx, which you can find on this pod feed or at our website, coastrange.org.The short version is that Who Will Own The Forest is an annual “timberland investment conference” bringing together some of the world's biggest climate polluters, corporate forest clear-cutters, finance giants, and false climate solutions peddlers.  Just to name a few, JP morgan-Chase, weyerhauser,  BP,  the list goes on and on, but you get the idea. Attendees come from all over the world to scheme on ever more efficient ways to exploit communities and natural resources, sabotage efforts to decarbonize, and extract maximum profits for the 1%.So in response, we staged a day long protest outside of the conference which drew around two hundred people, and the next day, we held a day long, Forests Over Profits  counter conference which was attended by roughly the same number of folks! There is clearly an appetite for taking on Wall St's exploitation of forestlands, and I'm so excited to see where this movement goes from here.  If you want to learn more or get involved, email me at michael@coastrange.org.For today's episode, I'm going to be airing a few clips from our Forests over Profits Conference, and I will be putting out another episode or two highlighting different presentations from the Forests Over Profits Conference soon.  I'm releasing this episode on Indigenous People's Day, October 9th, So in honor of that, today's episode will focus on clips from some of our conference's Indigenous presenters, including an Indigenous Environmental Network (IEN) panel discussion and a talk on the commercialization of Huckleberries and other sacred foods.  The Indigenous Environmental Network panel in particular was really powerful and inspiring, but I only have time to air a few clips for our radio edition.   I really encourage you to listen to their entire presentation, so I'll be putting out the full discussion as a bonus episode on this feed.Links and resources:CRR #65: Who Will Own The Forest, with Brenna Bell:More about our campaigns:https://coastrange.org/Forestsoverprofits.orghttps://www.ienearth.org/The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative False Solutions AllianceHuckleberry commercializationFairy Creek campaign:-Amazing documentary https://rematriationthefilm.com/-About Grandma LosahSupport the showPlease Donate to Help us Keep This Show Free!
