Hubo un momento en la historia del automóvil en el que perdimos el norte. Hoy en Garaje Hermético analizamos una era donde el lujo no se medía por la finura de su ingeniería o la calidad de sus materiales, sino por los metros de chapa, los jacuzzis de fibra de vidrio y las antenas de plástico cromado. Bienvenidos a la historia de las "cutre-limusinas" de los 80: cuando el exceso americano cruzó todas las fronteras. ¿De dónde viene el concepto de Limusina? Curiosamente, el nombre proviene de la región francesa de Limousin. Allí, los pastores usaban una capa con una capucha muy característica. En los inicios del motor, se llamó "Limousine" a los coches donde el chófer iba fuera, protegido por una extensión del techo (la "capucha"), mientras los pasajeros viajaban en un compartimento cerrado y opulento. Modelos como el Mercedes 600 "Grosser" o los Rolls-Royce Phantom definieron el segmento. Eran coches diseñados desde el tablero de dibujo para ser largos, con chasis reforzados de fábrica y suspensiones calculadas para su peso. Pero en los años 80, todo cambió. La "epidemia" del estiramiento Con la llegada de la era del "pelotazo" y la MTV, el mercado sufrió una mutación. Aparecieron los "Coachbuilders" o carroceros independientes que, en lugar de fabricar un coche desde cero, compraban sedanes de serie como el Lincoln Town Car y les metían la radial por la mitad. ¿Por qué estos modelos? Porque usaban chasis de largueros y travesaños, similares a los de un camión, lo que permitía cortarlos y alargarlos con relativa facilidad sin que el coche se partiera al instante. Sin embargo, esto no significaba que fueran seguros o eficientes. El catálogo del horror interior El término "cutre" cobra sentido al abrir la puerta de estas creaciones. Los interiores eran un festival de materiales cuestionables: -Espejos en el techo: Supuestamente para dar amplitud, pero que terminaban vibrando y generando ruidos insoportables. -Muebles de melamina: Imitaciones de madera que se astillaban al primer golpe. -La antena de "Boomerang": Un accesorio de plástico en el maletero que en la mayoría de los casos no estaba conectado a nada; era puro postureo visual. -El Jacuzzi: El colmo del absurdo. Llevar cientos de litros de agua en la parte trasera era un desastre dinámico. Ante cualquier frenazo, el agua se desplazaba por inercia, inundando la moqueta barata del vehículo. Una pesadilla para el chófer Conducir estas "salchichas" era una labor hercúlea. El radio de giro era comparable al de un transatlántico y la visibilidad trasera era nula. El mayor problema era el "efecto corte de esquina": si el conductor no abría la trayectoria al máximo, las ruedas traseras terminaban subiéndose a la acera. Además, al eliminar la rigidez estructural original, la carrocería flambeaba. En autopista, el tren delantero y el trasero parecían tener opiniones distintas sobre la dirección a seguir, obligando al conductor a corregir la trayectoria constantemente mientras los frenos de serie sufrían para detener semejante mole de hierro. El salto a Europa y el declive En Europa intentamos imitar la tendencia con resultados variopintos. Desde preparaciones sobre el Mercedes Clase S (W126) por parte de Duchatelet, hasta experimentos con Range Rover que perdían toda su capacidad todoterreno y comodidad. A finales de los 90, el gusto cambió. La limusina extra-larga empezó a verse como algo de "nuevo rico" sin clase o exclusiva de despedidas de soltero de bajo presupuesto. Muchos de estos gigantes terminaron abandonados en campas y naves industriales, oxidándose como monumentos a una época de excesos sin sentido. En definitiva, las cutre-limusinas fueron un experimento social sobre ruedas. Demostraron que se puede tener mucho presupuesto y, aun así, carecer de sentido común. Un capítulo divertido de la automoción, pero una advertencia clara: la buena ingeniería nunca puede ser sustituida por el tamaño.

Varieties and rootstocks are the topics of the September episode of the All In For Citrus podcast. Earlier this month, a field day was held in Jason Griffin's grove near Lake Alfred, Florida. He is collaborating with the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) to evaluate several rootstock/scion combinations developed by UF/IFAS citrus breeders. Griffin has focused much of the trial work on the OLL variety line, which was developed by Jude Grosser, UF/IFAS professor of plant cell genetics. Both Griffin and Grosser are podcast guests this month. Grosser discusses his research developing the OLL varieties and why he believes they are a good fit for Florida growers. The OLL line grew out of his relationship with Orie Lee. Lee was a legend in citrus breeding circles and discovered an interesting tree in his research groves near Saint Cloud, Florida, where the original OLL cuttings were taken. Grosser has developed several OLL varieties that are now commercially available. Combinations like OLL-8 on UFR-4 rootstock have performed well. Grosser also recommended growers consider the Orange 14 rootstock, which has shown some tolerance to both diaprepes and HLB.   Griffin discusses his grove trials and why he selected the OLL line. Tolerance to HLB, good yield and quality are among the reasons he likes the varieties. There are several rootstock/scion combinations he highlights as favorites during the podcast. One of those is OLL-20 on a mutant X639 rootstock.  Griffin also talks about the importance of a solid production program to promote tree health and productivity. In addition to a solid fertilizer program, he is a big believer in compost and mulch to increase soil organic matter. More frequent and controlled irrigation is also an important part of his program.
