Robert B. Parker (1932-2010), in conversation with Richard Wolinsky and Richard A. Lupoff, recorded June 13, 1992 while on tour for the Spenser novel, “Double Deuce.” Mystery and suspense author Robert B. Parker died at the age of 77 on January 18, 2010. His career encompassed 38 novels in his popular Spenser detective series during his life, with another three published posthumously, plus nine novels in the Jesse Stone series, four in the Cole and Hitch series, six in the Sonny Randall series, nine other novels, and four books of non-fiction. There were two Probabilities interviews with Robert B. Parker. The first time, co-hosted with Lawrence Davidson, was recorded in Parker's hotel room in the spring of 1981. At the time he'd just switched publishers and with Looking for Rachel Wallace and then Early Autumn, he was finally having success as an author. His success would explode exponentially over the next eleven years, and by the time of this interview. Robert Parker had written an additional ten Spenser novels, the TV series Spencer for Hire starring Robert Urich had run for three seasons, and a spin-off, A Man Called Hawk had had a 13 episode run. In addition, he'd completed an unfinished Philip Marlowe novel by Raymond Chandler, and followed that up with a sequel. Four Robert Urich Spenser filmswere produced after the interview was recorded, each based on a different Spenser novel by Parker. Three Spenser TV movies, based on three other novels with Joe Mantagna as Spenser ran from 1999 to 2001. A 2020 Netflix film with Mark Wahlberg, Spencer: Confidential, was based on a Spenser novel written by another author, Ace Atkins, who continued the series. In the interview, Robert Parker insists he won't start other series. In fact, of course, he did. The Sonny Randall series, featuring a female former cop turned private eye; the Cole & Hitch series of western detective novels, and the Jesse Stone series, featuring the police chief of a small town in Massachusetts. There have also been nine made for television films starting Tom Selleck as Jesse Stone. This interview was digitized, remastered and re-edited in January 2024 by Richard Wolinsky. The post Robert B. Parker (1932-2010), The Spenser novels, 1992 appeared first on KPFA.

Robert B. Parker is a favorite author of Tony's, and he's chosen Appaloosa, the first Western of a series featuring Virgil COle and Everett HItch. There's plenty of drama, action, terse conversations, and a surprising amount of humor in these pages! Tom was delighted, so much so that he quickly consumed the next three books in the series.TTYpodcast.comThumbingthroughyesterday.com
Greed, duplicity, betrayal and treachery. Sounds like the plot of a summer blockbuster movie or a Robert B. Parker mystery novel. That and the latest chapter of “As College Sports Turns.” In a breathtaking span of roughly 24 hours last Thursday and Friday, five schools, the universities of Oregon, Washington, Utah and Arizona and Arizona State University all bolted from their moorings in the Pac-12 Conference for new homes. Utah, Arizona and Arizona State landed in the Big 12, an amalgam of schools scattered across the country from Morgantown, West Virginia southward to Orlando and westward through Texas and into Provo, Utah. Their migration follows, by a week, Colorado's move to the Big 12 from the PAC-12. Meanwhile, Oregon and Washington, who were founding members of what was the Pacific Coast Conference in 1915, tossed 108 years of history aside to become the 17th and 18th members of the Big Ten. That means that as of next August, college athletes from Seattle and Eugene, Oregon, will be playing games in College Park and Piscataway, N.J. And vice versa. If none of this makes sense to you, welcome to the wonderland world of college sports, where down is up, left is right and longtime alliances can be dashed at the drop of a hat and at the pursuit of a penny. And make no mistake: Every single move that has happened in college sports going back nearly 40 years to when the Supreme Court lifted the restrictions on the number of times a school can appear on television has taken place for two reasons: money and football. Actually, those two go together like a horse and carriage, though it's hard to know these days which drives the other. Well, that's not entirely true. Television and its zeal to present football, the biggest money maker in all of sports, to as many eyeballs as possible, are what has fueled this unholy and relentless move of schools to ignore traditional coalitions and basic geography. This wave of conference relocations, which will bring Southern California and UCLA to the Big Ten next year is just the latest in a series of moves that included taking Maryland out its 60-year home in the Atlantic Coast Conference nine years ago. In a cold cost-benefit look at the moves, it's hard to argue that the universities are wrong. The passel of television contracts that will bring Saturday Big Ten football to FOX, CBS and NBC this fall will pay the league more than $1 billion annually. That comes out to between $80 and $100 million per school per year, giving Big Ten universities a tremendous advantage over the rest of the field. Indeed, officials at Florida State have talked to an investment firm about creating a private equity fund so that that school can keep up. Lost in all this is what happens to non-football athletes, who will see their experiences, in and out of the classroom, debauched to provide television programming for zealous football fans. The future for them and for the schools left in the wake of this naked money grab feels less like a rom-com and more like a horror show. And that's how I see it for this week. Except vengeance isn't simple for Henry, especially when an old enemy appears out of nowhere, more bodies stack up, and a series of betrayals and double crosses climax with a morning assault on a farm house that pits Henry and Woody against a deadly band of criminals with nothing to lose.Critical Acclaim for Because the Night:“Henry Malone deserves to be up there with Matt Scudder and Harry Hole among our best, funniest, toughest detectives, and James D. F. Hannah is among our best chroniclers of America's sketchy underside.” —Nick Kolakowski, author of Love & Bullets and Boise Longpig Hunting Club“James D.F. Hannah delivers another dose of heart, humor, and haymakers to the Henry Malone series with Because the Night, leaving us clawing at the pages, and proving why he's one of the best writers working today.” —Eryk Pruitt, author of Something Bad Wrong“Private eye Henry Malone is a worthy descendant of both Robert B. Parker's Spenser and Elmore Leonard's Raylan Givens, and he carries on the family tradition in style in Because the Night. James D.F. Hannah delivers a backwoods barroom brawl of a novel that will leave you bloodied and ready for more.” —Scott Von Doviak, author of Lowdown Road and Charlesgate ConfidentialSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues Bookwaves Vanessa Veselka, whose latest novel is “The Great Offshore Grounds,” in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky. “The Great Offshore Grounds” is an epic novel about two sisters on a quest to find themselves during the upheavals of the current era. It's a detailed examination of feminism, of lives lived on the edge, and of life in the parts of America we hear little about. Vanessa Veselka's first novel, “Zazen,” has just been reissued by Vintage. Published by a small press over a decade ago, it looks at the travails of young adults set against the backdrop of an ever-increasing political violence in America. Both novels are available in trade paperback. Vanessa Veselka, the daughter of journalist Linda Ellerbee, left home at the age of fifteen and early in her life lived the life of a homeless vagabond, eventually becoming a professional musician in the Pacific Northwest, a union organizer, and a writer of fiction. Complete 51-minute interview. Bookwaves Robert B. Parker (1932-2010) is known today as one of the most important writers of detective fiction during the final quarter of the 20th Century. His wise cracking Boston private eye, Spenser, Spenser's sidekick Hawk, and girlfriend Susan Silverman have become iconic figures. When Parker died at the age of 77 in 2010, 38 Spenser novels had been published. Two more came out posthumously, and a third was completed by his agent. Novelist Ace Atkins has now written nine more Spenser novels. The series Spenser for Hire, starring Robert Urich and Avery Brooks ran for three seasons, and Brooks had a spin-off that ran for half a season, A Man Called Hawk. Several television movies were also made from Parker's Spenser books, the most recent, Spenser Confidential, is actually based on one of Ace Atkins' Spenser novels. This interview hosted by Richard Wolinaky and Lawrence Davidson, was recorded in the spring of 1981 while Robert B. Parker was on tour for his novel, Early Autumn, and marked the first Probabilities interview with a mystery writer. His career hadn't advanced under his first publisher, Houghton-Mifflin, and he switched to Delacorte, and Parker's audience began to grow. This was his seventh Spenser novel, and his eighth over all (Wilderness had come out late in 1980 and Looking for Rachel Wallace was his first under the new contract. At the time of the interview, his first five novels were all out of print in paperback. Though he says in the interview his detective fiction would be limited to the Spenser series, eventually he branched out to write another series of nine books featuring Jesse Stone, a former LAPD detective who becomes the police chief in a small New Enngland town, and six novels featuring Sunny Randall, a female detective. Eventually there was some crossover between the three series. Along the way, he also wrote a handful of westerns, the Cole and Hitch series, and two books featuring Raymond Chandler's detective, Philip Marlow. When Parker died in 2010 of a sudden heart attack, the family decided to let other writers continue the Spenser, Stone and western series, which go on to this day. Complete 40-minute Interview. MIKE LUPICA chats to Paul Burke about FALLOUT (Jesse Stone) & REVENGE TOUR (Sunny Randall). Spenser, 'follow the money', the Parkersphere & the Robert B Parker legacy.FALLOUT: Paradise is devastated when a star high-school baseball player is found dead at the bottom of a bluff just a day after winning the team's biggest game. For Jesse, the loss is doubly difficult - the teen was the nephew of his colleague, Suitcase Simpson, and Jesse had been coaching the young shortstop. As he searches for answers he is stonewalled at every turn, and it seems that someone is determined to keep him from digging further. Jesse is further shocked by the murder of former Paradise police chief, Charlie Farrell. Farrell had been looking into a series of scam calls that preyed upon the elderly. But how do these 'ghost calls' connect to his murder? When threats - and gunshots - appear on Jesse's own doorstep, the race to find answers is on.REVENGE TOUR PI Sunny Randall's landlord and former client, famous novelist Melanie Joan Hall, is being threatened and blackmailed, and it is up to Sunny and her best friend Spike to ensure her protection. But as Sunny looks into the identity of Melanie Joan's stalker, she learns that much of the author's past is a product of her amazing imagination, and her loyalty to her old friend is challenged. At the same time, Sunny's aging ex-cop father, Phil, is threatened by a shady lawyer settling an old score. Fighting crimes on two fronts, Sunny must use all of her savvy, and the help of her friends, in order to protect those she loves.Mike Lupica is a prominent sports writer. Mr. Lupica is a New York Times Bestselling writer, working in genres ranging from young adult, biography, non-fiction, mystery, and thrillers. Patrick Millikin in conversation with Mike Lupica
Raymond Chandler wrote three more Philip Marlowe novels: The Little Sister in 1949, The Long Goodbye in 1953, and Playback in 1958. He became a dual citizen of the U.S. and Great Britain. His wife, Cissy died in 1954. In 1955, he attempted suicide. Heartbroken and drunk, Chandler neglected to inter her cremated remains. They sat for fifty-seven years in a storage locker at Cypress View Mausoleum. Chandler was in the midst of a new Marlowe novel, Poodle Springs, when he passed away on March 26th, 1959. Robert B. Parker finished the novel thirty years later. Chandler is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, in San Diego, California. Later that year ABC brought Marlowe to TV for the first time in a series starring Philip Carey. It lasted five months. James Garner starred as Marlowe in a 1969 film, while Elliott Gould played Marlowe in the cult classic Long Goodbye from 1973, and a middle-aged Robert Mitchum starred in the 1975 Farewell, My Lovely and the 1978 Big Sleep. Between September of 1977 and January of 1978 BBC dramatized The Big Sleep, The High Window, The Lady in the Lake, The Little Sister, and The Long Goodbye. Ed Bishop starred as Marlowe. Ten years later, BBC did a version of Farewell, My Lovely. The shows were later heard in Los Angeles over NPR's affiliate KCRW-FM. BBC was back at it again with new adaptations of Chandler's novels starring Toby Stephens in 2011. Meanwhile HBO produced two series of Marlowe TV episodes in the mid-1980s starring Powers Boothe, and both Danny Glover and James Caan have played Marlowe in made-for-TV films in the years since. It has recently been announced that Liam Neeson will star in a new Marlowe film in 2023.
In this monthly q & a session, the guys answer listener questions. J.K. Rowling was nearly homeless when she wrote the first Harry Potter book. Stephen King penned CARRIE on a small desk wedged between a washer and dryer. James Patterson worked in advertising and famously wrote the Toys “R” Us theme song long before becoming an author. Join New York Times best-seller, J.D. Barker, and indie powerhouses J. Thorn and Zach Bohannon as they pull back the curtain on some of the world's most prolific authors. Where did they start? What is their process? The biggest names in publishing all have origin stories, all have a process, all have tips and secrets... What does it take to consistently top the bestseller lists? Get your notepad out. School's in session. This, is Writers, Ink. Questions asked: This is a difficult question - I've been pondering this for some time. I suspect you might be unable to answer this. There are a series of TV films starring Tom Selleck based on Robert B Parker novels called the Jesse Stone series. If you could use one word to describe the atmosphere in the films it would be melancholy. It's mostly achieved by music photography and Tom Selleck's slow drawl dialogue. How can one achieve this melancholy feeling in writing? How do you reconcile multiple streams of income (in multiple author services) and the simplicity of offering ONE thing on your website for clients? I know that in order to build clientele, we need to focus our efforts, time, and attention (and maybe even marketing) on one service so as not to overwhelm the potential client with too many options. But, I receive (small amounts of) income from various author services I perform--editing, coaching, audiobook narration. How can I keep my website, newsletters, and "elevator pitches" simple enough and still allow clients to know what they can hire me to do? For instance, I thought of putting up my signature offer on a featured website page, and then list "other author services" with a link to a different page so it doesn't clutter up the featured page. If you could go back in time and change one decision you made in your writing career what would it be and why? If you wouldn't change a thing...why not I'm appreciating more and more the benefits of hybrid publishing through traditional and self. While I start my query process, I'm curious to best practices. How many agents should you submit queries to at one time? If you have two novels in different genres, should you submit both and see which one is picked up or focus on one? Also, where are the best places to meet agents? I write in the fantasy and superhero fiction genres. Where would I find agents that represent my genres? Does a personal meeting help the process of query acceptance? Sounds like JD has "won" the treadmill that most authors hit in terms of making enough money to retire on without having to work with all his investments. What keeps him writing? I think Steven King said that 1 million words published is an achievement to make you a great writer. Do you think that number is correct? if not what is the number? Or does it mean you need to have an editor and ensure you have deliberate practice in order for the million words to count? J. D. Barker - http://jdbarker.com/ J. Legendary Boston PI Spenser is back in ROBERT B. PARKER'S BYE BYE BABY, the 50th installment in the critically acclaimed saga started by the late Parker and the tenth to be written by New York Times-bestselling author Ace Atkins. Over the years, fans have looked to Spenser—widely considered to be “Parker's greatest creation” (Chicago Sun-Times)—as a symbol of honor and honesty in a sordid world. Nowhere is this more apparent than in this latest entry, which sends Spenser on the campaign trail with a progressive political ingenue, who is the target of a deadly conspiracy. G. P. Putnam's Sons is thrilled to publish this electrifying new adventure. Carolina Garcia-Ramirez is a rising star in national politics, taking on the establishment with her progressive agenda. Tough, outspoken, and driven, the young congresswoman has ignited a new conversation in Boston about race, poverty, health care, and the environment. Now facing her second campaign, she finds herself not only fighting a tight primary with an old guard challenger but also contending with numerous death threats coming from hundreds of suspects. When her chief of staff reaches out to Spenser for security and help finding the culprits of what he believes to be the most credible threats, Garcia-Ramirez is less than thrilled. Since her first grassroots run, she's used to the antipathy and intimidation women of color often face when seeking power. To her, it's all noise. But it turns out an FBI agent disagrees, warning Spenser that Garcia-Ramirez might be in real danger this time. It doesn't take long for Spenser to cross paths with an extremist group called The Minutemen, led by a wealthy Harvard grad named Bishop Graves. Although Graves is a social media sensation, pushing an agenda of white supremacy and toxic masculinity, he denies he's behind the attacks. As the primary nears and threats become a deadly plot, it's up to Spenser, Hawk, and a surprise trusted ally to ensure the congresswoman is safe. This is Spenser doing what he does best, living by a personal code and moral compass that can't ever be broken. ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Ace Atkins is the New York Times bestselling author of twenty-eight books, including ten books in his Quinn Colson series. Handpicked by the Robert B. Parker Estate nearly a decade ago to continue the Spenser series, he's written ten novels about the iconic private eye. He lives and works in Oxford, Mississippi. Robert B. Parker was the author of seventy books, including the legendary Spenser detective series, the novels featuring Police Chief Jesse Stone, and the acclaimed Virgil Cole-Everett Hitch Westerns, as well as the Sunny Randall novels. Winner of the Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Award and long considered the undisputed dean of American crime fiction, he died in January 2010. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support
Today, we're chatting with award-winning crime novelist (and journalist) Ace Atkins, about 'The Heathens,' his latest entry in the Quinn Colson thriller series. Atkins worked as a crime reporter in the newsroom of The Tampa Tribune before he published his first novel, Crossroad Blues, in 1998. Along with Colson books, he has also continued Robert B. Parker's iconic Spenser character after Parker's death in 2010. https://aceatkins.com/
