Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 20-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world. Today, we bring you a bonus episode of What Matters Now, a weekly podcast exploring key issues currently shaping Israel and the Jewish World hosted by deputy editor Amanda Borschel-Dan. This week we speak with the editors of a new prayerbook -- "Az Nashir - We Will Sing Again: Women's Prayers for Our Time of Need" -- written by women, for women, in the wake of the October 7, 2023, Hamas onslaught on southern Israel. The anthology was compiled and edited by Shira Lankin Sheps, Anne Gordon and Rachel Sharansky Danziger, and it was published by The Layers Press, an imprint of The SHVILLI Center. The three editors join Borschel-Dan in The Times of Israel's Jerusalem office this week and explain their impetus to tackle such an ambitious project and the decisions they made while putting it together, such as the inclusion of "visual prayer" -- 30 colorful illustrations by female artists. According to the editors, the Hebrew-English tome is a prayer book companion that emulates a long tradition of Jewish women writing prayers, supplications and liturgical poems in their own mother tongues. So this week, we ask Shira Lankin Sheps, Anne Gordon and Rachel Sharansky Danziger what matters now. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Senior analyst Haviv Rettig-Gur and Zman Yisrael editor Biranit Goren join host Anne Gordon for today's podcast. The holiday of Sukkot is often heralded as a time to celebrate all of the nations of the world -- Israel has parades and performances to that effect. It therefore seems fitting to discuss an important element of Israel's foreign affairs -- specifically, the possible defense pact between Israel and the United States. Both Israelis and Americans have mixed feelings about the potential treaty, and US involvement may now be complicated further, in light of US Rep. Keven McCarthy's departure from his position as speaker of the House of Representatives. Goren and Rettig Gur unpack what it all means. And a new development on the home front too -- Israel's political party, Yesh Atid, which is the party of Opposition Leader Yair Lapid, will be holding primary elections -- and Lapid is being challenged for the leadership, at least officially. Goren and Rettig Gur consider why this shift in approach. Discussed articles include: Gallant to meet US counterpart in Washington, after Netanyahu's sit-down with Biden ‘Basic framework' in place for Israel-Saudi normalization, US says In first, Yesh Atid to hold leadership election; MK Ram Ben Barak to challenge Lapid Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Diplomatic reporter Lazar Berman and legal affairs reporter Jeremy Sharon join host Anne Gordon for today's podcast. The tussle between Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara and Justice Minister Yariv Levin over the fact that Levin has not convened the Judicial Selection Committee is ongoing. Levin has his reasons for not wanting to convene it, and Baharav-Miara has her reasons for insisting he do so. How is the average Israeli citizen affected by this, and what implications does it have for the judicial system? Sharon unpacks it all for us. Just back from a trip to Bahrain with Israel's Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, Berman explains what happened there, and why this trip took place now. He also sheds light on an op-ed by New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman urging US President Joe Biden and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed ben Salman not to support Israeli-Saudi normalization. Discussed articles include: AG: Levin ‘obligated' to convene judicial selection panel, fill open judgeships FM Cohen to Bahraini crown prince: We expect normalization with more Arab states Tom Friedman to Biden: Don't be Netanyahu's ‘useful idiot' with Saudi normalization Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Senior analyst Haviv Rettig-Gur and political and legal correspondent Carrie Keller-Lynn join host Anne Gordon on today's episode. The relationship between the United States and Israel is precious, and sometimes finicky. Of course Israel is glad to welcome American visiting dignitaries -- but Israel is also often on tenterhooks with concern about whether the big powers-that-be will tell Israel what to do (never mind that Israel won't necessarily listen). New York City Mayor Eric Adams was recently in Israel for three days, and managed those tensions. When National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir took to the airwaves last night, he expressed his view of Jewish entitlement in Israel, with some divisive, dramatic, and troubling statements. The real question, however, is whether he will yet become a competent minister. And the next Knesset session is coming fast -- after the Jewish holidays in the fall. With the ultra-Orthodox parties looking to cement yeshiva student draft exemptions into law, the coalition and its protestors are expected to face a contentious, complicated winter session. Discussed articles include: ‘I listened, I didn't weigh in': NYC mayor meets protest leaders, PM, a settler head NYC mayor says he wants to adopt Israeli drone tech for policing Ben Gvir says his rights outweigh those of Arabs in West Bank Ben Gvir: There's a bigger threat than 150 Arabs killed — it could spill over to Jews Coalition whip: We'll pass IDF draft law next, then continue with judicial overhaul Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. US bureau chief Jacob Magid and news editor Amy Spiro join host Anne Gordon on today's episode. One of the ongoing stories of this year is the ultra-high incidence of Arab homicide. On Tuesday, four people were gunned down in Abu Snan, an Arab town in northern Israel, including a candidate running in the upcoming municipal elections. Should the vote be postponed? Terror attacks have also been on the rise in recent weeks. A leaked report from a recent cabinet meeting suggests a renewed tough stance against terror may be in the works. Nearly 45 years after Golda Meir's death, and some 50 years since she was prime minister, her story, including but not limited to her time in office, is the subject of scrutiny. Deborah Lipstadt has a new book out, "Golda Meir: Israel's Matriarch," and a new movie simply called “Golda,” starring Helen Mirren, is due to be released tomorrow in Israel and on Friday in the US. Adam Sandler, who has made a name for himself as a proud Jew in popular culture, stars in a new Netflix movie, also due out this week. The question is whether "You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah" will be the crowd-pleaser that cements American Judaism in pop culture. Discussed articles include: 4 killed, including mayoral candidate, amid spiraling gun violence in Arab community Director-general of Arab municipality killed, drawing call for Shin Bet intervention Security cabinet meets as far-right advocates sharp crackdown in West Bank How should Golda Meir be remembered? Deborah Lipstadt weighs in In Jerusalem, Helen Mirren says Golda Meir ‘one of the greatest' roles she's played ‘You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah' is an endearing Sandler family affair Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Deputy editor Amanda Borschel-Dan and religions and Diaspora affairs reporter Canaan Lidor join host Anne Gordon on today's episode. Israel's current government is thought to be its most right-wing government ever, and also the most religious government in Israeli history -- the secular Likud party is working in lockstep cooperation (or so it seems most of the time) with the Haredi parties, United Torah Judaism and Shas, as well as the Religious Zionism party and Otzma Yehudit, which is largely religious as well. Why, then, are the ultra-Orthodox parties on the verge of stepping out of this united front? In Hungary, the country's oldest Orthodox Jewish community may be out of funds to continue. Will Chabad-Lubavitch, historically less welcome in Hungary than elsewhere, step in with the cash to help out? An enterprising American scientist is encouraging STEM education in Ethiopia, with projects designed based on what the students find lacking in their own society. That same enterprising scientist is using data-driven farming to help prevent starvation in Uganda. And Uganda's novel Jewish community may be key to improving the economy there with new jobs. Discussed articles include: Netanyahu, Levin said to seek pause to overhaul after Haredi party revolt How a Boston-based retired physicist is spreading the gospel of science in Africa Seeding STEM centers in Africa, NGO looks for crop of scientists to cultivate continent How homegrown data-driven farming may save sub-Saharan Africa's Jews from starvation Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Military correspondent Emanuel Fabian and health reporter Renee Ghert-Zand join host Anne Gordon on today's episode. Saturday saw an Israeli father and son gunned down in a fatal terror shooting at a carwash in the hotspot town of Huwara in the northern West Bank. What differentiated this terror attack from others? Moreover, given the predictable grassroots outrage at this attack, what led the IDF to shoot an individual? After reservists in Israel's Navy and Air Force quit as part of their protest against the government's reforms, the IDF suspended them. But they had already quit, so what did the military accomplish? A brand-new COVID variant that is dramatically different from previous variants has been detected in Israel and elsewhere. What do we know? And what are the implications of this variant for the new COVID vaccine on the horizon? Two new treatments should help lung cancer patients -- those suffering from recurrence and those who develop hypoglycemia due to the disease. And new research drills down to the biology of how men and women react to stress differently. Discussed articles include: Israeli father and son gunned down and killed in terror shooting at Huwara carwash IDF soldiers shoot masked settler allegedly hurling stones at Palestinians Air Force suspends several senior reservists as overhaul protests roil military New ‘very different' COVID-19 variant detected in Israel, Denmark and US Israeli study may open door to preventing relapse of certain types of lung cancer Doctors use breast cancer drug to treat life-threatening hypoglycemia in lung cancer patient Study shows how brain cells of males and females respond differently to stress Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. Anne Gordon has been leading dolphin and whale encounters all over the world for many years. During this time, she has gathered first-hand experience observing these wisdom-keepers. As masters of frequency and vibration, dolphins and whales have existed for over 40 million years. Combine this with the fact that they may have been "recording" ultrasonic images of life in the sea, we may someday possess the technology to decode their historic picture language. If you love and are intrigued by dolphins, this is the show for you! Learn more about Anne's work and new oracle cards at www.whaleanddolphinwisdomretreats.com

You are in that present moment. If you're on a boat, and there are dolphins right in front of the boat surfing, righting the bow waves, looking and turning to look up at you, and making eye contact, that is a most mindful experience. Wisdom From The Sea Oracle Deck. Anne: I have a brand new Oracle Card Deck called Wisdom From The Sea. I have been trained as a certified Dolphin Energy Healer. It's like any other kind of energetic healing like Reiki. I consciously ask the dolphins and the whales to send their powerful healing energy through me. I'm somebody who is not sensitive to energy. I can't see it or feel it. Some people can see auras, but not me. What I do get is, in my mind, it's like watching a mind movie that the dolphins and whales send me, a series of images and messages for my client. Oracle card decks are great if you have a challenge, a question, or if you just want some guidance. Swimming With Whales When we swim with whales, we're not swimming, we're floating, and they're swimming around us. There's nothing we can do to keep up with a whale when it wants to swim. Usually we'll find a mom and a calf and Mom will go down and just rest. But baby has to come up more often for air than mom does. So when baby comes up for air, sometimes it'll come take a look at us and they'll wonder, ‘what are you guys doing here?' We met a baby and that was amazing. Now we're not allowed to touch the wild whales, right? Well, this little baby did not read that memo and it literally came to every single one of us and touched us and reached out. He literally reached out his pectoral fin to me and it was inches from my face. And I just gently laid my hand on its pectoral fin. And she went inches from a number of my group. Everybody in my group touched this baby whale or the baby whale touch them. It was the most amazing experience. Words of Wisdom “I'm seeing in my mind's eye, this beautiful eye of a whale that's looking directly at you and just beaming you so much love and to let you know that you are loved, you are not alone, and the whales and dolphins are here to support you and guide you. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Senior analyst Haviv Rettig Gur and environment reporter Sue Surkes join host Anne Gordon on today's episode. With some prices rising and others (oddly) falling, Rettig Gur explains not only the cost of living in Israel, but also why it has been unchangingly high for decades. Hint: It's not because of COVID-19-interrupted supply chains or Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Surkes updates us on the efforts to reduce carbon globally by taking it out of the air and trading it for forest growth and other plants that absorb carbon. She also outlines a proposal to turn one of Jerusalem's thoroughfares into a slower road with an environmentally pleasing park. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. US correspondent Jacob Magid and reporter Luke Tress join host Anne Gordon on today's episode. With the drug epidemic out of the United States shifting from prescription pills to heroin to fentanyl, and with overdoses on the rise, Tress sheds light on why fentanyl is a deadly threat, and why no demographic, including the American Jewish community, is immune to this plague of addiction. Magid reports on Jared Kushner's upcoming book about his time in the White House as senior adviser to his father-in-law, then-US president Donald Trump, including where he contradicts former US ambassador to Israel David Friedman's account of a US-Israel plan for annexation. Magid also fills us in about Israel's security cabinet vote to withhold more than half a billion shekels from the Palestinian Authority to offset the money the PA pays terrorists. This is not an episode about Women of the Wall. It is not an episode about Women for the Wall. It is not an episode about the egalitarian space at Robinson's Arch. Instead, this is an episode about fairness and respect and dignity - issues that should concern everyone who cares about Judaism, regardless of how you feel about non-Orthodox prayer at the Kotel or about women reading the Torah on the women's side of the Wall. Let's be up front about the halachic facts: men have an obligation to pray in a minyan, a quorum, while women do not. For this reason, it's not unreasonable to expect more men to come to shul than women - and that is often what happens. Moreover, assuming that the Kotel has the status of a synagogue, it's reasonable to expect more men to come to the Kotel - and, if it's true that more men visit the Kotel than women, the men's section should be larger than the women's. (Of course, we can't ignore the fact that if the ezrat nashim were larger, perhaps more women would come in the first place.) But based on anecdotal experience, the women's section is frequently - usually? - significantly more crowded than the men's section. Are we really OK with women having to squeeze in to touch the Kotel while the men have no problem doing so? At the same time, the problem with space at the Kotel is emblematic of a problem with space in general. While as Orthodox Jews, we believe that communal prayer should not involved mixed-gender space, and that synagogues halachially require a mechitza, is there a reason that this has started to extend to places where it's not required halachically - and that the women's sections that exist are often treated with such disrespect? To discuss this Scott invited the hosts of the Chochmat Nashim podcast, Anne Gordon and Shoshanna Keats-Jaskoll, to talk about the Kotel and the larger problem of disrespecting women in Orthodox spaces, in ways that have nothing to do with halacha. Health and science correspondent Nathan Jeffay and, from Ukraine, diplomatic correspondent Lazar Berman join host Anne Gordon on today's episode. There have been some interesting and exciting developments by Israeli health researchers, specifically to benefit potential sufferers of fibromyalgia and those who experience male infertility. Jeffay reports on what the future may hold. He also gives us the lowdown on Israel's newest and largest emergency room, and explains why Israelis are not getting enough iodine. A new political party has emerged from the remnants of the old political parties, as the politicians jockey for strategic advantage in the November election. Keller-Lynn reports on "Zionist Spirit." Berman updates us about the Ukrainian town of Uman, site of an annual Orthodox Rosh Hashanah mass pilgrimage, and the refugees who have settled in, given the pilgrims' absence. But what will happen to them come September? He also describes the lay of the land in Kharkiv, Ukraine, 20 kilometers (nearly 12.5 miles) from the Russian front, and his own experience in a shelter, during several not-too-distant explosions. Fabian explains why the IDF was briefing foreign press on the locations of Hamas weapons stockpiles and the like, and why it will continue to do so. Environment reporter Sue Surkes and health and science correspondent Nathan Jeffay join host Anne Gordon, in for Amanda Borschel-Dan, on today's episode. With a heatwave in Israel's forecast this week, and the mercury rising dramatically elsewhere throughout the world, we might ask if this is the future. Surkes reports on a dire claim that meeting the terms of the Paris accords will not do enough to save humanity. But, she says, there are several plans afoot that may do the trick. He also recalls US President Joe Biden's fist-bumps, in light of his recent infection with COVID-19, with a reminder about how the virus is transmitted. Welcome to The Times of Israel's Daily Briefing, your 15-minute audio update on what's happening in Israel, the Middle East and the Jewish world, from Sunday through Thursday. Religions and Diaspora Affairs correspondent Judah Ari Gross and news editor Amy Spiro join host Anne Gordon, in for Amanda Borschel-Dan, on today's episode. Gross updates us on reactions to the Western Wall conflict regarding the harassment of several bar and bat mitzvah celebrations a few weeks ago. Where the State of Israel has been lukewarm in its response, the Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency is seeking a hard line against the disruptive conduct. Gross also sets the scene for the 21st Maccabiah Games, which are now going on in Israel. These so-called Jewish Olympics are a kind of ingathering of the exiles, bringing Jewish athletes from all over the world to compete. But will they drum up support on the local front? Sticking with the sports theme, Spiro elaborates on the most recent woes of the Beitar Jerusalem soccer club, from the team's need for a budget to the furious fans who fear their team will be disbanded. She also explains why Israel has already chosen its Eurovision 2023 contestant. But will pop star Noa Kirel go the distance to compete? Discussed articles include: Jewish Agency demands boosted security at Western Wall after ‘despicable' protest Rainbow of flags as largest-ever Maccabiah kicks off in Jerusalem with Biden on hand Paying the penalties: The stranger-than-fiction rise and fall of Beitar Jerusalem Chart-topper Noa Kirel chosen to represent Israel at Eurovision 2023 Subscribe to The Times of Israel Daily Briefing on iTunes, Spotify, PlayerFM, Google Play, or wherever you get your podcasts. You will discover that when you swim with the dolphins you are helping them to fulfill their mission of infusing humans and spreading their frequencies of joy and love around the world. She tells about how putting down your camera helps you to have magical, eye to eye, heart to heart and soul to soul connections and how her "broken" camera allowed her to have one of her top 3 dolphin encounters ever, when an elder Spotted dolphin invited her into an unforgettable spiral dolphin dance! The dolphins also share how important it is to allow yourself to be seen. To be transparent to them, to your friends and family and most importantly to yourself. Anne talks about how you can open up to being truly seen by the dolphins, even if you never travel to swim with them, right in the comfort of your own home.If you would like to join Anne to swim and connect with the dolphins , check it out here: Dolphin Bliss in Bimini Retreat.

In this episode, your host, Anne Gordon shares the wisdom she has received direct from the Octopus about removing distractions and focusing on one task at a time to give that task full attention to make the result the best it possibly can be.Octopus also gives us three words to pay attention to, patience, observation and adaptation. Octopus is patient, they wait, observing the world around them, waiting for the perfect opportunity to present itself, which may be a crab, snail or fish swimming nearby that they can then easily capture for their meal. They tell us how we can learn how to apply patience and observation to explore opportunities that we could easily miss when we are rushing through the world being busy all the time. They teach us to adapt, as they do to their surroundings. The octopus can change his color to adapt and blend in with or stand out from any environment they are in. We can't change our color, but we can adapt the way we think, talk and behave to get the most out of any situation we find ourselves in. Anne also shares several encounters she has had with wild octopus throughout her life starting with meeting an octopus as a child at a local aquarium to her most recent encounter with a California two spot octopus living in a tide pool not far from her home in Southern California, who reached out and literally held hands with her for several minutes!Join Anne in her Facebook group to see video of her new octopus friend: Dolphin and Whale Wisdom Pod Photo credit for the octopus photo on the cover art: Rich German.
Linda started a deep journey with whale around 2011. From that time onwards she read many books about whales and took every opportunity she could to go on whale watches and retreats. Attending the First Cetacean Summit organized by Anne Gordon was life changing. She was fascinated by the accounts of all the presenters and learned so much from them. Shortly, thereafter she started to teach workshops on whales. People need to know who these incredible beings are. They are not "fish" as some people refer to them but highly sentient, evolved beings. It is her mission, through workshops and as a whale and dolphin energy healing practitioner to en-lighten people about these amazing beings. Linda had been an energy healer for many years, first as an Authentic Reiki® Master/Teacher and then using a technique called Frequencies of Brilliance™. These energy healing modalities acted as stepping stones for her to become an energy channel. Initially she was channeling the energy of the angels and then whales started to come through her. This awakened her interest in whales and dolphins and led her to read many books on them and connect with them on whale watching trips and retreats. She received dolphin attunements from Linda Shay, who then directed her to attend the first Cetacean Summit being organized by Anne. Later she trained as a whale and dolphin energy healing practitioner. In this episode Linda shares some of her magical encounters with Dolphins and Whales, both in the physical as well as spiritually. She channels for us some Light Language and two different frequencies direct from the whales!Check out the picture the Dolphins painted for her of Joy Here.Join Anne on Facebook in her Dolphin & Whale Wisdom Pod Facebook group.

They often dive thousands of meters into the ocean to find their food, the giant squid. The Sperm whales share how it feels to them in the depths and why they love it.They will take you on a journey of understanding as to why most people prefer to stay in the shallows and why Sperm whales are often feared...and it has nothing to do with them at all.Enjoy your deep dive with the dolphins and whales in this episode. If you would like support and guidance from Anne and the dolphins and whales to take your own deep dive in a Dolphin and Whale Energy Healing session check out her website: DolphinHealing.net

In this episode you will meet Jonathon Bengel, a tax accountant by trade, but a world traveler and life philosopher at heart. Jonathan shares many of the powerful life lessons he learned while walking the historic Camino de Santiago through France and Spain. Jonathan began his journey thinking he was on vacation and very quicky realized that this would be much more of a challenge than he had planned on. Jonathan will recount how he learned several profound life lessons on the very first day when he ignored helpful advice to take the right path and his rebellious nature came out and they took the left path, only to realize that it was much steeper and took them miles out of their way. Then a thick fog rolled in, which he calls the fog of ignorance, which made their walk extremely dangerous as it was a challenge to see the precarious cliff they walked next to.
