Farah feels alone, even when surrounded by her classmates. She listens and nods but doesn't speak. It's hard being the new kid in school, especially when you're from another country and don't know the language. Then, on a field trip to an apple orchard, Farah discovers there are lots of things that sound the same as they did at home, from dogs crunching their food to the ripple of friendly laughter. As she helps the class make apple cider, Farah connects with the other students and begins to feel that she belongs.Ted Lewin's gorgeous sun-drenched paintings and Eve Bunting's sensitive text immediately put the reader into another child's shoes in this timely story of a young Muslim immigrant. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/avant-garde-books/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/avant-garde-books/support

To accompany the film versions of ‘Night Tree' there is also an activity pack which also comes in an audio version. Welcome to Stories Come to Life. I am your host, Kathryn Lopez Luker. During this time of Covid, many people aren't able to use the library in the same way as in the past. To help bring more stories to more readers, many publishing companies are allowing books that are normally unavailable for copyright reasons to be read out loud and shared with others until June 30, 2022. The stories that fall under that special permission will all be taken down on that date, so listen now, while they're available! Today's story is shared with permission of HarperCollins Children's Books. Today's story is One Candle, by Eve Bunting. This is a more modern and realistic Hanukkah story, that I think you'll enjoy. It always brings a tear to my eye. Maybe it will for you, too. Now sit back, relax, and listen to this story come to life.

It was hailed as one of the most important books about the war describing the experiences of disillusioned young American soldiers there. ----- Other Vietnam War reading: • The Things They Carried (1990) by Tim O’Brien • Home Before Morning: The Story of an Army Nurse in Vietnam (2001) by Lynda Van Devanter • The Quiet American (1955) by Graham Greene • Gods Go Begging (1999) by Alfredo Vea • Music and War In The United States (2019) (Sarah Mahler Kraaz, Ed.) also references the manuscript by Christopher Waltrip, “Radio: Broadcasting the Story of a Soldier’s Life” • Songs of The Vietnam Conflict (2001) by James E. Washington, Jefferson, John Adams and their contemporaries, didn't walk around saying 'Isn't this fascinating living in the past? Aren't we wearing our funny clothes?' They lived in the present. The difference is, it was their present, not ours. They were caught up living in the moment exactly as we are, and with no more certainty of how things would turn out than we have."David McCullough
