It's the simple story of a letterer-turned-cartoonist, who conquered the world of children's entertainment with the ongoing Ordinary People Change the World book series and the associated Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum cartoon on PBS. But how did Chris Eliopoulos climb this mountain, you ask? Well, listen to the episode. But if you want the Cliff's Notes version: he started out as a highly successful and prolific letterer and font designer, who among other things, hand-lettered the first 100 issues of Savage Dragon (past guest Erik Larsen is a friend). Chris was bit by the cartooning bug on that same title, where he introduced Desperate Times as a backup feature. After a bigger stint on Marvel's Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius (and the Misery Loves Sherman webcomic), he hooked up with writer Brad Meltzer for the aforementioned kids' book series, which takes a heroic look at historical and contemporary real-life figures. And then, just for fun, the pair created the Xavier Riddle show, where the main character interacts with the figures from the books. The newest books in the series, which takes a turn into the fictional, are I am Superman and I am Batman, which drop on September 27. Go get 'em!You can follow Chris on all the socials @chriseliopoulos._______________________________Check out a video version of this episode on our YouTube channel: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits.If you liked this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts. The New York Times bestselling Ordinary People Change the World series welcomes the 21st and 22nd additions to the collection this fall: I AM ANNE FRANK and I AM BENJAMIN FRANKLIN. The inception for this series, now with more than 3.5 million copies in print, came from a personal place for Brad Meltzer: he wanted to give his own children heroes of character, kindness, and compassion – he did not want his children to emulate someone simply “famous for being famous” on social media. From his love of history, Brad knew there were better heroes for his children to look up to, and he decided to write about them. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Brad Meltzer is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Heroes for My Son, Heroes for My Daughter, a dozen suspense novels like The Escape Artist, and non-fiction books like The First Conspiracy. He is also the host of the History Channel television shows Brad Meltzer's Decoded and Brad Meltzer's Lost History (which he used to help find the missing 9/11 flag). He is the co-creator of Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum – and of course, the inspiration for Brad. He lives in Florida with his wife and their three children. ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR Christopher Eliopoulos began his illustration career at Marvel Comics, and has worked on thousands of comics, including Cosmic Commandos, Monster Mayhem, Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius, Pet Avengers, and Cow Boy, all of which he wrote and illustrated. The Yawns Are Coming!, Christopher’s first picture book as both author and illustrator, is on-sale now. He lives in New Jersey with his wife and their identical twin sons (when the boys are home from college). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

As the book opens, the Republic is deeply divided, each half of the country hating the other half (sound familiar?). The story begins in 1861 on a train traveling from Philadelphia to Washington DC in the dark of night, days before Abraham Lincoln’s first inauguration. On the train, Lincoln is in disguise, dressed an invalid, wearing a shawl and low-brimmed hat. Why? A secret society didn’t want an abolitionist in the highest office in the land. Thanks to the work of famed detective Allan Pinkerton, along with one of the first female private detectives in America, the assassination plot was stopped. The Lincoln Conspiracy shows how dangerously close the killers came to changing the course of American history—and what kind of leadership was required to thwart the plot. This new book, also co-written with Josh Mensch, has received early praise by historians such as James Swanson, Douglas Brinkley, and others. Brad Meltzer is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Escape Artist, The Inner Circle, and ten other bestselling thrillers, as well as the Ordinary People Change the World series. He is also the host of the History Channel TV shows Brad Meltzer’s Decoded and Brad Meltzer’s Lost History, which he used to help find the missing 9/11 flag that the firefighters raised at Ground Zero.

New York Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer grew tired of his kids’ obsession with reality TV and people who were famous for being famous so he began to write children's books about real heroes from history. He talks about the newest additions to his Ordinary People Change the World series I Am Walt Disney and I Am Marie Curie, and reveals some of his own childhood heroes. He says he puts just as much historical research into his children’s books as he does into his bestselling political thrillers and explains why it was so important to show kids that even famous historical figures started out somewhere. He talks about the new PBS TV series based on his books and how it’s a dream come true for a man who grew up with Sesame Street and Mr. Rodgers. Plus Brad announces his next book for his adult readers - a sequel to his best-selling novel The Escape Artist. Golden Alignment with Dr. Beth Golden Radio Show Teresa Funke has built a 26-year career on the notion that thinking outside the box means following your passion and bringing your unique talents to your workplace and community. She believes that all of us, no matter how “ordinary” can be the sparks that start a movement, whether we mean to or not. This notion was enforced by her work as an author interviewing the ordinary men and women who contributed in profound ways to the war effort during World War II and whose memories were the inspirations for Teresa’s seven books about the war. Teresa has built an arts-based business that operates on the assumption that artists, businesses, civic groups, and individuals can collaborate to bring new programs into communities that benefit those in need. She encourages others to nurture and protect their creative and innovative ideas until they can bring them to fruition. And to understand that there is no such thing as failure. Teresa Funke embodies the modern artist/entrepreneur. She is the owner of Teresa Funke & Company and Victory House Press and the award-winning author of seven novels for adults and children based on true stories from WWII including Dancing in Combat Boots and War on a Sunday Morning. Her articles, essays, and short stories have been featured in numerous publications. She is also a nationwide speaker offering keynotes and presentations and a popular writer’s coach who developed the Self-Publishing Blue Print. Her innovative programs and boundary-pushing talks prove that she is a true thought leader, one who challenges us to change our view of how life and business should be led, and how each and every “ordinary” person can be a catalyst for change. www.teresafunke.com teresa@teresafunke.com ~ More about Golden Alignment with Dr. Beth Golden ~ Have you ever hit that sweet spot where everything’s going right, doors open and opportunities magically appear? That is what Golden Alignment is all about. Dr. Beth Golden loves to both play in that Golden space and teach others how to get there and stay there! On some shows Dr. Golden will interview guests, varying in age and expertise, who will share stories about the before and after of their Golden Alignment moments. Dr. Beth Golden was inspired to create this show when she listened to a talk about “What Does My Future Self Know? By Christine McIver. It became abundantly clear that she was NOT in alignment with what her soul was calling her to do. Fortunately, she was only a few ticks away from her magical Golden Alignment and this show is an outflowing of that alignment. Dr. Beth Golden is a Life Coach, Author, Speaker and Radio Show Host. With doctorates in Metaphysics and Divinity. Her genius lies in teaching people how to align with their golden purpose. The foundational principles of her signature program are: Loving yourself; Living in gratitude and Allowing the Universe to move on your behalf. https://bethgoldenphd.com/ To get more of Golden Alignment with Dr. Beth Golden be sure to visit the archives page for replays of all her shows here: https://www.inspiredchoicesnetwork.com/podcast/golden-alignment-dr-beth-golden/

If you think about it, no one ever lived in the past. Washington, Jefferson, John Adams and their contemporaries, didn't walk around saying 'Isn't this fascinating living in the past? Aren't we wearing our funny clothes?' They lived in the present. The difference is, it was their present, not ours. They were caught up living in the moment exactly as we are, and with no more certainty of how things would turn out than we have."David McCullough

According to Brad Meltzer, “This project began four years ago when my daughter was looking for clothes to wear and all she could find were pink shirts with princesses on them. I saw the mission right there. I wanted my kids to see more than princesses and sports figures. I wanted them to see real heroes… real people no different than themselves.” So, in 2014, he began a new series of first-person, non-fiction history books for children: I Am Amelia Earhart, I am Abraham Lincoln, I am Rosa Parks, and other books in the Ordinary People Change the World series. During the program, Meltzer talks about his motivation to write a series for children and talks with students from Lynbrook Elementary (FCPS), via Skype. One segment features Lake Anne Elementary (FCPS) students and their biography bags about famous Americans. Meltzer is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of adult thrillers, including The Inner Circle and its recent sequel, The Fifth Assassin. His comic books, “Justice League of America”, won the prestigious Eisner Award. This multi-talented author is also the host of the History Channel’s “Brad Meltzer’s Lost History” and "Brad Meltzer’s Decoded."
