If you're looking for an episode with periodic crying, impassioned rants, and lots goose sounds; well this is the episode for you! Let's discuss the lasting impact and heartfelt message of the 1996 film, Fly Away Home! HONK HONK!
Ladybugs, Ladybirds, or Lady beetles are familiar to all in art and in reality. These little munchers of aphids and other garden insects are common in many habitats. If the supply of soft-bodied insects on your cabbages dwindles, the adults will fly off to other plants in your garden and elsewhere. Because lady beetles have been collected and sold for as biological control agents, species have been moved from place to place and even between continents. This episode covers such topics and also addresses efforts to document rare native species and even farm them for reintroduction into their former habitats. Episode art is from iNaturalist contributor Bill Siebert. Bill is a retired biology teacher equipped with a 600mm and macro lens. It's runaway bride week here at Fated Mates and we're delightedly traveling down memory lane to talk Julia Roberts, Sally Field, the importance of significant lips for a proper mustache, and all the ways we love cold feet on the way to the altar! We discuss all the ways runaway brides can happen in romance, talk about our high expectations for this trope…and Sarah realizes she's written two of them! Our next read along is Sarah Mayberry's Her Best Worst Mistake, an absolute banger of an enemies-to-lovers romance and one of our favorites. Get it at Amazon, Apple Books, Barnes & Noble or Kobo. You are in for an absolute treat with this one.Show NotesThis week we're talking about runaway brides (in the past, we also recorded an episode about Waking Up Married). Some of the primordial runaway brides are from movies: Smokey and the Bandit (1977) and Runaway Bride (1999).Sarah recommended an essay called The Bizarre Genre of Runaway Bride Romcoms, which has some other great movie rom-coms: Maid of Honor, Something Borrowed, My Best Friend's Wedding. We're tired of kids' movies. Jen's last one was Big Hero 6 (that is not hyperbole, she hasn't seen an animated movie since 2014 when Lil Romance was 11). Other families movies we enjoyed: Ghostbusters (2016) and Fly Away Home (1996).Growing up in the 80s, “those other channels” that weren't one of the major networks were called UHF channels, I think?Whew, the wedding industrial complex is no joke. Our next read along is Her Best Worst Mistake by Sarah Mayberry.

Millions of American "Snowbirds" seasonally migrate from the Rust Belt to the Sunbelt. They seek more comfortable, warmer climates during the cold winters "up north." Many of the Snowbirds also come from Canada. What is a "Snowbird," and why do they want to move around the country chasing the sunshine? Is there something this lifestyle says about us and our culture? Have our patterns of life mimicked the ducks and the geese? In this essay, Arthur Busch explains why he became a Snowbird and how he feels about leaving his home and family behind in Michigan to head for the Suncoast of Florida. Arthur discusses what has become an attainable lifestyle for many from blue-collar regions of America. Is being a Snowbird part of the working-class culture? For many in Michigan who spent careers working in the automobile industry, the answer is YES!

Paul and Sean make no apologies for enjoying this conversation as much as we did! Iain continues to give us fascinating insights into his eclectic and accomplished solo work, including last year's excellent ‘Lockdown' album Fly Away Home. But it's inevitable that we're frothing at the mouth to hear more about his experience of playing in the touring carnations of 10cc with Graham, ELO with Jeff Lynne and Yes with Anderson, Wakeman and Rabin. His accounts are amazing, as is his musicianship. Check out the many live clips on YouTube to see what we mean. Stepping into the late Chris Squire's shoes is no mean feat; nor is recreating the luscious vocal textures of Jeff Lynne's best production work. We also discuss 10cc and Graham's recent publicity work for the new compilation LP, the thrilling unveiling of Natural Wonder and the new piece with Brian May. Finally, we couldn't resist the temptation to include some of the joyous rabbit hole we dived down on immediate contact with Iain. Before we'd even started to talk about 10cc, solo projects, ELO or Yes, we discovered a huge shared love. And indeed rabbited on about it for a while... For completists only, we suspect! ;- ) This will be our last podcast for a little while, as we really need to focus on 'getting on with IT'...

I am very excited to introduce this week's guest, as she is both a friend of the podcast and a someone I consider to be a friend full stop. And that person is Katie Sinclair. Katie is an independent producer and development executive, currently working at Blueprint Pictures, whose credits include Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, In Bruges, The Last Letter From Your Lover, The Riot Club and Emma, where she sources and develops projects for the production company's slate. She has worked in production and development for BBC Film, BBC Studios, Disney and Lionsgate. As producer, Katie recently completed The Last Days (wri/dir. Dipo Baruwa-Etti) which was filmed during the pandemic and was funded by BFI NETWORK and BBC Drama commissioning, while her previous short film Signs (wri/dir Yero Timi-Biu) won the Youth Jury Prize at the Academy Award-qualifying Encounters Film Festival. She produces under the banner Tannahill Productions and is committed to developing and championing new talent. We talk about how she pursued a career in development, what she learnt from working at BBC Film, our shared love of the Anna Paquin film Fly Away Home, why relationships are the key to pretty much everything, how she has built her confidence in her taste and opinion, the difference between working in development for a production company as opposed to a public funder, the art of giving feedback and why the key is asking questions rather than supplying solutions and her producing ethic and storytelling sensibilities and why it comes down to empathy and care. Enjoy!
The Mikes are jumping into some unsafe looking homemade planes and flying a gaggle of geese south for the winter as they discuss the 1996 family film Fly Away Home starring Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin. Butler was sure Field would hate his film, but to his surprise, Field didn't hate it! From the father/daughter relationship of Daniels and Paquin, the cinematography, the true story angle, and of course the cuteness of those geese, there's a lot to enjoy in this film. Of course, it's far from perfect. The Mike discuss the slightly-too-long runtime, the instances of bad CG, incomplete supporting characters, and a poorly written shoehorned villain are some of the things that hold this feel-good film back. The Mikes will also discuss some behind-the-scenes facts about this film, including its true story origins. So, grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits to the left and right of you and settle down for https://www.forgottencinemapodcast.com/ (Forgotten Cinema).
Ladybugs (Ladybirds or Coccinellidae) are a widespread family of small beetles. Regardless of their name, they are not bugs nor birds. We're not sure where their name comes from but it might come from "Beetle of Our Lady" in reference to the Virgin Mary. Many cultures consider them good luck, this is probably because they sometimes eat unwanted pests which helps preserve crops. In The Good The Bad the NewsThis week it's complicated. Jennifer talks about the cocaine hippos from Colombia and how they have become the first animals recognized as “legal persons” in the U.S. (If you want to learn more about them listen to our episode all about Hippopotamus found at the link below). Then she talks Penis worms that lived in the depths of ancient seas more than 500 million years ago. Amber didn't look into bad news because bad news is sad, but for her good news refugees in Cameroon have turned a desert camp into a thriving forest.Ladybugs are often brightly colored with small black spots on their wing covers, with black legs, heads and antennae. However, they are not all red and some are not colorful at all. There are 6,000 ladybug species worldwide and almost 500 species in North America.Unfortunately, due to invasive species of ladybugs, such as the Harlequin ladybird (Asian lady beetle, Asian Ladybug) and the Seven-spotted ladybug, native North American ladybug species, such as the nine-spotted ladybug, are becoming displace and even extinct in some areas. Listen now to learn about the good luck bug, one of nature's natural pests, and also, one of nature's natural pest controls.Link to the episode about Hippos: https://betterthanhuman.buzzsprout.com/603916/4990118-i-want-a-hippopotamus-wait-never-mind-hippopotamus-are-terrifyingly-deadlyFollow us on Twitter @betterthanhuma1on Facebook @betterthanhumanpodcaston Instagram @betterthanhumanpodcasthttps://www.tiktok.com/@betterthanhumanpodcastor Email us at betterthanhumanpodcast@gmail.comWe look forward to hearing from you, and we look forward to you joining our cult of weirdness!#betterthanhuman #cultofweirdnes

Aaron and Josh Sarnecky are back for another podcast. This time they're discussing Fly Away Home for its 25th anniversary. Fly Away Home is a family film directed by Carroll Ballard (The Black Stallion). The film came out on September 13, 1996. Inspired by true events, the film tells the story of a 13-year-old girl named Amy Alden (Anna Paquin, The Irishman), who raises a flock of orphaned geese. With the help of her inventor father, Thomas (Jeff Daniels, The Comey Rule), Amy leads the geese south for the winter using an ultralight aircraft. Other characters include Tom's girlfriend, Susan (Dana Delany, Desperate Housewives), and Officer Seifert (Jeremy Ratchford, Cold Case) from Animal Regulation. Fly Away Home garnered critical acclaim and was nominated for Best Cinematography at the Oscars. It grossed $25 million at the U.S. box office. In the podcast, Josh and Aaron talk about their history with the movie before going into its plot, characters, cinematography, and effects. For more family movie podcasts, you can listen to Aaron and Josh chat about Muppet Treasure Island and James and the Giant Peach. Fly Away Home is available on Prime Video.

Writer/Director Conor O'Toole dropped by to talk about a film he watched "a million" times as a child, Fly Away Home. Fly Away Home is a classic 'girl and her father fly light aircraft across international borders to teach orphaned geese how to migrate' story. Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin are in it. It looks gorgeous and deserves to be part of our nostalgia canon. The talk leads us onto other things like how Conor's relationship to the film now that he's the Jeff Daniels, how we talk to our animals, the Steven Universe film, and Conor's new film Bicycle Thieves: Pumped Up which is at the Galway Film Fleadh from July 22nd to 25th. EPISODE 132 - CARROLL BALLARD - Director Team Deakins has the pleasure of speaking with director Carroll Ballard (WIND, THE BLACK STALLION, NEVER CRY WOLF, DUMA). We learn how he got involved in the project that became the film, Black Stallion, how he worked with cinematographer, Caleb Deschanel. We also discuss the particular challenges of that film. Carroll talks about the difficulties of working with animals and children as well as working with wolves and caribous in Never Cry Wolf, geese in Fly Away Home, and cheetahs in Duma. We also learn about how he met the extreme challenges of shooting the film Wind. We learned a lot in this episode!

It's September! Let's celebrate with a surprisingly good autumnal movie, Fly Away Home
This week, we're talking about two movies from cinematographer Caleb "Zooey's Dad" Deschanel: Never Look Away (2018) and Killer Joe (2011). One's a high point of the McConaissance, the other's a just-fine three hour German melodrama that was somehow nominated for three Oscars this year. SPEAKING OF OSCARS, we also talk about the one time Deschanel got an Oscar nom for Fly Away Home, the movie where Jeff Daniels and Anna Paquin teach a goose how to fly. Life is wild! lfDE8OZOgIzrYRR5zDPp Title music is Life Story by Kevin Hairs. Learn more here: https://kevinhairs.bandcamp.com/releases
And he gives us a glimpse of the future too! Deschanel is just back from shooting Disney's new ‘Lion King' in London. He's now Oscar-nominated for his work on ‘Never Look Away.' That makes his sixth nomination--his previous five were for ‘The Right Stuff,' ‘The Natural,' ‘Fly Away Home,' ‘The Patriot' and ‘The Passion of the Christ.' He talks about his long career, plus his penchant for working with animals.
On my writing desk sits a plant I named Emerson. He’s just a little guy not even a foot tall, including his pot. He’s a Pachira aquatica, also known as the money tree, Guiana chestnut, or saba nut. Emerson comes from Miami, Florida, a place much warmer than where he now lives. The two things I love most about him, (not trying to be sexist here, he could be a her, except I named him Emerson), is that, first of all, he has four miniature trunks that have started to be molded into a beautiful braid, ending in beautiful green lanceolate leaves that grow in clusters of 3 to 5 leaves per stem. The second thing I love is that due to the fact that he is a tropical tree thriving in wetlands and swamps, he is virtually kill-proof – pretty much immune to over watering. These dudes love water so, if you’re like me, you don't have to worry about any over watering disorders you may have, due to the fact that you underwatered all the plants you tried to grow in the first half of your life. The reason he sits on my desk is that he has a job; and that is to inspire me and help give me a “Nature Fix”. Especially on days like today when it’s literally 12 degrees outside and my dogs look at me like I suggested they jump off the deck of the Titanic when I open the door and ask them if they want to go for a walk. Emerson sits on my desk next to the books that I am currently enjoying, and he doesn’t seem to mind when I touch his leaves whenever I have the impulse or need to get a little nature-fix. We all need Nature. It’s just that some of us feel the need more urgently than others. If you are looking for a way to feel close to nature in the dead of winter, you might consider buying a few indoor plants and studying and learning more about them. (A favorite hobby of mine is growing and killing bonsai trees. Not that I particularly enjoy killing them, or purposely try to neglect them – in fact I love them and think that they are so inspiring and beautiful. It just seems that as a collective, most bonsais are really particular about their owners, and would rather commit suicide than put up with an ignorant and irregular watering schedule. Still, I do have a particularly good relationship with a large Juniper named Mr. Miaggi that has seemed pretty happy in our household for the past couple of years. So I haven’t completely given up hope yet for my life as a bonsai caretaker!) Here are a few other ideas for getting your “Nature-fix” on a cold winter’s day – Taking a trip to your local library, Barnes & Noble, or other cool bookstore and hanging out in the Nature section. If you have a good collection already, you might try studying a field guide or reading a great nature book or novel set in nature. (A few examples include – “The Nature Fix” by Florence Williams, “The Nature Principle” by Richard Louv, any book by Annie Dillard such as “Pilgrim at Tinker Creek”, and of course Henry David Thoreau’s brilliant contribution, “Walden”. Right now my wife and I are enjoying “The Dog Master” by Bruce Cameron, (the same guy who wrote “The Dog’s Purpose”. It takes you back in time to the first relationship between wolf and man, and how it evolved into the relationship we now enjoy with our canine companions. It’s a pretty coo read. You could get your fix by studying hiking trails and travel maps you plan on doing or exploring in the next year. Melissa and I set aside sometime yesterday to just get away to a coffee shop and plan our hikes, travels, nature adventures, and 14ers we plan on climbing this year. It’s a great way to set an intention and have something to look forward to at the same time. Try revisiting your old nature journals, or sketching in a new one. This can have a calm relaxing effect on your spirit as it takes you on a virtual journey into the natural world. Watching inspiring movies set in nature such as “A River Runs Through It”, “Dances With Wolves”, “The Call of the Wild”, “Never Cry Wolf”, “Into the Wild” and “Fly Away Home” just to name a few of our favorites. Create your own Nature Zen Den filled with natural inspirations such as a Zen Garden, a beautiful water fountain, wind chimes and nature sounds, plants, Nature pictures and artwork, as well as pine-scented candles and lavender oils, patchouli incense, and so on. The key is to try to appeal to all the senses for the full Nature effect, which is so good for relieving stress and creating feelings of well-being. These are just a few suggestions for helping you get you Nature fix on days when you can’t get outdoors. Try being creative and come up with some ideas of your own. You’ll find it’s well worth the effort! No go get your "Nature Fix" for the day!

Don't be confused by the poster, this isn't E.T., so put down the Resse's Pieces because we're not phoning home and don't wave your finger at me. This is a movie about geese, a little girl who lost her mom and had to move to Canada with her loser father, and an a strangly unreasonable forest ranger dead set on crushing their dreams. Why? Because you gotta fight the system! Even if you have a decently compelling personal drama you can't ease up on oppresssive forces like your local forest ranger, and maybe, I don't know, a guy who wants to build a hotel in a swamp. They can't keep us down. Like birds we are meant to be free. Free to fly and... other stuff! And if it gets cold we'll fly someplace warm, and call that home! We'll... Fly Away Home! The Civilians' first show ever was Canard, Canard, Goose, created in 2001 to explore alleged geese abuse in the Adirondacks. The investigation, inspired by a rumor about the geese in the feature film Fly Away Home, brought up questions about home, truth, and how we know we know - all themes that were particularly relevant for these New York artists in the post-9/11 winter of 2001. This episode is the concert version of the entire show performed at Joe's Pub in 2011 for our tenth anniversary season performed by Aysan Celik, Matthew Dellapina, Greg McFadden, Jennifer R. Morris, Brandon Miller, Caitlin Miller, and Maria Elena Ramirez. Jenny and Aysan were members of the original cast in 2002. The play includes songs by Michael Friedman, and marks the first show for which he ever wrote songs.
