Introduce a re-mixing of cassette, originally published online in November 2022. Address potential copyright issues by removing or reducing background music (e.g., "Carry Out Feelings" by Nazareth and "Ode to Billie Joe" by Bobbie Gentry).Discusses recent violent incident in Washington, D.C., where two Israeli embassy workers were killed, advocating for harsher punishments for violent acts. Also mention a tax reform bill, expressing concern over a possible broken promise regarding no tax on Social Security. Not typically an NBA fan, enjoyed a Knicks vs. Pacers game but criticizes the NBA for becoming political, specifically calling out LeBron James.Newly written poem titled "Breacher Leacher," which is abstract and cryptic, touching on themes of deception and decay.1976 cassette features family members, including Helen May Wright "MawMaw" Adolph, Wendy Fitzgerald, and cousins Steve, Craig, Mike, John Dirk, and Kyle, with MawMaw talking prominently.Cassette captures a lively, chaotic conversation among cousins and aunts, in rural Boothville. The dialogue is informal, filled with interruptions, and reflects childhood antics and family dynamics.Kids talk about starting swimming lessons and playing games like volleyball and kickball at a recreation program. They describe beating one team and losing to another.Kids recount mowing grass, playing with frogs (including trying to run them over with a tractor), and grocery shopping mishaps, like Michael dropping a pickle jar and Stevie stealing jawbreakers.Mention using a CB radio, pretending to be characters like Steve Austin (from "The Six Million Dollar Man"), and engaging in imaginative play, such as frog hunting and pirogue (small boat) adventures in a river.Kids talk about staying at MawMaw's house, Craig's antics, and conflicts with parents. They also mention a baseball game and hopes of hitting home runs.Conversation is filled with playful teasing, complaints about smells (e.g., stink bugs, flatulence), and exaggerated stories, like a frog surviving a tractor blade or a ship in the river. The 1976 cassette captures the carefree, mischievous spirit of childhood in the mid-1970s, with vivid descriptions of rural life, family bonds, and playful banter.Attempt to blend modern opinions with nostalgia for the past.

We had to take a few weeks off, but we are back with an episode that is almost as good as the music featured in it - AND THE MUSIC IS VERY GOOD!The idea was to pitch songs that should be used in a sample. Such a fun thought experiment that we thought we should focus on a specific instrument so we could make this a series. So today we present the drums edition of this playlist-based concept.First we'll get into Danny's playlist, featuring 8 songs made up of 2-song pairings that exist in similar spaces. We'll cover country, gritty rock, swampy soulful country funk, and then a random pairing of songs that happen to work fantastic together. Then we'll get into Julius's playlist which covers grunge, Krautrock, and soul - a mix of songs that will have you dancing along while craving buttery chicken. With the last minute addition of a Bjork song it rounds out to 8 classic songs, old and new, that you can jam out to in any setting.Songs featured in this episode:Gettin' HappyHang You From the HeavensTulsa Turnaround (Tyler Childers Live at Farm-Aid)Melt Not My Igloo (Common Remix)Vitamin CTerrapin (Conductor Williams Remix)Links to our Playlists:Danny: Spotify - Apple Music - YoutubeJulius: Spotify - Apple Music - YoutubeCheck our Season 2 preview episode description to see what music we'll be discussing next!Send us a text message! You can follow us here: Instagram Twitter Tiktok Send us a message, we'd love to hear from you!

Here's another piece of evidence that Bobbie Gentry had the makings of a truly great soul singer. Here, she puts in a dynamite performance of a tune that Betty Lavette had recorded the year before. With the help of Rick Hall and the Fame house band in Muscle Shoals, AL, it's a southern soul treat that tastes just right!

We had the pleasure of interviewing Jaime Wyatt over Zoom video! If love is a place, then Jaime Wyatt's found it with her ambitious and hopeful new album, Feel Good, brimming with joy and pushing her sound to new sonic and emotional heights, while blurring the lines between classic roots, southern soul, and vintage R&B. Today, Wyatt fully embraces that notion of musical effervescence with the grooving end of summer love song “Love Is A Place” where she expresses her experience learning to love another woman. It's the first time Wyatt has explicitly written with her intended queer-friendly pronouns since coming out publicly on her 2020 breakthrough Neon Cross. Wyatt originally wrote the ecstatic work of healing and self-acceptance “Love Is A Place” on the piano and considers it to be one of her favorite songs off of her upcoming Adrian Quesada-produced (Black Pumas) album Feel Good out November 3rd on New West Records. Wyatt has a love-hate relationship with her new home Nashville, Tennessee but with “Love Is A Place” she's taking a defiant stand for herself and her queer community and their innate right to Feel Good. “Love Is A Place” revels in the freedom of being seen for who you truly are, and trusting in it, as she sings: “She could free me from a lifetime of pain. And I've been down and out but never fallen. Love is a place I've never known. I'd like to go and would you take me there?”Praise for Jaime Wyatt's come from Pitchfork, NME, Fader, and NPR who love her “remarkable voice” as well as Rolling Stone who've applauded her “lush, layered, and complex” performances. Feel Good is undoubtedly her most ambitious album yet where Wyatt pushes her sound to new sonic and emotional heights. Already, she's unveiled the fierce, soulful meditation “World Worth Keeping” off the record about the kind of beauty that's worth fighting for, no matter how hopeless things may seem. Accompanied by a mind-bending journey of a music video, directed by Dylan Reyes, “World Worth Keeping” is rooted in its omniscient optimism and succinctly lays the groundwork for Wyatt's refusal to surrender to cynicism and negativity despite its ever-looming presence. Read her interview with Billboard about the song and album.Recorded with Black Pumas' Adrian Quesada, Feel Good is bold and ecstatic, built on tight, intoxicating grooves that belie the songs' substantial emotional stakes, showcasing Wyatt's unparalleled artistry and musical prowess. Wyatt's writing is unguarded and intuitive here, tapping into the deep recesses of her subconscious as she reckons with grief and growth, and her delivery is visceral to match, cutting straight to the bone with equal parts sensitivity and swagger. Taken as a whole, the collection stands as a radical act of creative liberation from an artist already known for pushing limits, a genre-defying work of healing, queer joy and self-love that tips its cap to everything from Al Green and Otis Redding to Waylon Jennings and Bobbie Gentry in its relentless pursuit of peace and pleasure. A West Coast native, Wyatt first began turning heads with her breakout 2017 debut, Felony Blues, which chronicled her now much-publicized battle with addiction and transformative journey through the criminal justice system. Her 2020 follow-up and New West debut, Neon Cross, tackled even more profoundly personal revelations and arrived to tremendous acclaim everywhere from Pitchfork, NME, NPR and Rolling Stone. We want to hear from you! Book Vs. Movie: Ode to Billy JoeThe 1967 Song Vs. the 1976 Movie It was a hot and steamy summer day when we recorded this episode, so we decided to go as far south as we could get here in the USA with the tale of Billie Joe Macallister (named Billy Joe for the movie adaptation) and why he may have jumped to his death off the Tallahacthie Bridge. Mississippi native Bobbie Gentry wrote the song in 1967 for her first album, and it became a huge sensation. The song is written from the viewpoint of the narrator, a young girl who knew Billie Joe but did not say if she is privy to why he died the way he did. How did she know him, and what did they throw from the bridge? These are still asked of the singer, but she kept it opaque. (She is also a recluse who never gives interviews, though she is considered a legend in country music. The film was produced and directed by Max Baer, Jr. and written by Herman Racuher (of Summer of ‘42 fame ), who spoke privately with Gentry about the path he wanted to take fleshing out the story. It stars Robby Benson as a sexually confused young man who pursues teenage Bobbie Lee (Glynnis O'Connor.) The film was a massive hit in 1976, and if you check the IMDB and Reddit boards, you will still find people unsure of “what” was going on with Billy Joe that day. So, what are the main differences between the song and the film? Which version did the Margos like better? Have a listen! In this ep, the Margos discuss:Bobbie Gentry's career and the long-lasting effect of the song's success.Theories about the characters of the songThe cast of the 1976 film: Robby Benson (Billy Joe McAllister ), Glynnis O'Connor (Bobbie Lee Hartley ), Joan Hotchkis (Mrs. Hartely), Sandy McPeak (Papa,) James Best (Dewey Barksdale ), Terence Goodman (James Hartley,) and Becky Bowen as Becky Thompson.Clips used:Bobbie Gentry (1967 Andy Williams special)Ode to Billy Joe (1976 trailer)Billy Joe meets Bobbie's parentsBobbie Lee and Billy Joe have a dateCrazy Mississippi partyBilly Joe confesses his “sin”Bobbie Lee leaves townBook Vs. Travis Wammack is a legendary guitarist and recording artist whose guitar licks have been featured on an estimated 60 million records sold. He was the first to develop and use the fuzz tone for an electric guitar. At the age of 16, he had his 1963 number-one hit, “Scratchy,” and by 1969, Wammack's skills landed him in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. There he teamed up with legendary producer Rick Hall at FAME Studios to record songs with Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, Little Richard, Mac Davis, Clarence Carter, the Osmond Brothers, Bobbie Gentry, Sam Cooke, and many others. In this episode we welcome the splendid Holly Gleason, all the way from downtown Nashville, and invite her to tell us about her life as a country music writer and publicist.Holly explains how, as a teenage championship golfer, she first became enamoured of country in her native state of Ohio, later writing about it (as well as about rap and R&B) for the Miami Herald. I have seen friends walk away from relationships, jobs, and promising careers when all they really needed was some time and space to gather their thoughts, slow their heart rate, and rediscover their joy. I'm not saying you should always, “hang on one more day at a time and wait for things to get better.” I am saying you need to recognize the changing seasons in your life. Bobbie Gentry knew when it was time to stop, turn the page, and begin a new chapter. Bobbie knocked the Beatles off the #1 spot on the music charts with “Ode to Billy Joe,” a song that she wrote, performed, and produced. She won Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the Grammy Awards. Eleven more of her songs made the music charts. She was a major headline act in Las Vegas and she co-hosted a successful TV series with country music superstar Glen Campbell. America watched as Bobbie Gentry provided the music for a major motion picture about her imaginary Billie Joe McAllister, then performed “Mama, a Rainbow” for her mother who was seated in the studio during the filming of a television special. The next day, Bobby quietly retired from the spotlight without fanfare, returning no phone calls, answering no letters, and granting no interviews. She had been in the spotlight for 14 years when she whispered, “Enough,” and walked away 41 years ago. What triggered it? Nothing. She simply realized that a season in her life had ended. Solomon spoke famously about the seasons of life in the third chapter of Ecclesiastes:There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace. … He has made everything beautiful in its time. … I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God. One can think of the seasons of life in a few different ways.Financially, we go from survival to acquisition to distribution. Relationally, we go from seeking, to finding, to celebrating. In business, we go from learner, to doer, to teacher. This is essentially the Hero's Journey, a sequence of events that is nearly impossible to escape: 1. We meet the Hero in modest circumstances. 2. He encounters the Call to Adventure. 3. He meets the Old Man in the Woods who prepares him for what lies ahead. 4. He then rises to the challenge of adventure and discovers abilities within himself he didn't know were there. In the Bible we see Moses, Joseph, Samson, David and many others, including women such as Hannah, Esther, Abigail, Ruth, and Deborah as they encounter the Hero's Journey. In literature and in the movies, we see Bilbo in The Hobbit, Frodo in The Lord of the Rings, Daniel LaRusso in The Karate Kid, Simba in The Lion King, Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, Neo in The Matrix, and Luke Skywalker in Star Wars. Luke was just a goober on the backwater planet of Tatooine when he was called to adventure. Obi-Wan Kenobi was the Old Man in the Woods who prepared him for his journey. Luke was again a goober with a wrecked spaceship in a swamp on Dagobah when he encountered Yoda, his second Old Man in the Woods who would prepare him for his second adventure. Which Luke Skywalker are you?Are you...
This was a tough one! The Finleys discuss the 1976 movie, Ode to Billy Joe, based on the Bobbie Gentry song.
The audio in me recognizes the stereo in you. Comedians and cousins Maureen Begley and Ang Buxton highlight 2 musical artists from Mississippi. This is the Stars of the States. We'll tell you some reasons to stay alive, our favorite We Sing bops, dads, Cobra Kai, Human Resources, and of course, cats. Stay tuned for our hit single, Pastries by the Park. Ang tells the story of The Weeks, Mississippi's gutter punk band and insists you listen to 2 of their songs specifically (you'll have to listen to know which.) Maureen tells us about a few women out of Mississippi including Tammy Wynette, who did the twang so that Lee Ann Rimes and Shania Twain could sang. She also touches on Bobbie Gentry, the OG. And OF COURSE we have to talk about This kiss, this kiss. Impossible. Faith Hill. I'm a Rime Song Cowboy.

Bob Dylan [41:16] "Billy 4" Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid Columbia KC 32460 1973 I have a particular soft spot for this Dylan album. The film and soundtrack came into my life at a time when I was becoming increasingly interested in film and aspect ratios like Cinemascope. And also at a time when I was making art that was making art exploring the myth of the American West and native American folklore, especially Old Man Coyote the trickster. In this film and soundtrack we get both the myth of the American West (Billy the Kid) and the trickster (Dylan is nothing if not a trickster). The film itself is a bit of a Peckinpah shaggy dog, but worth the early 70s antihero hubris. I prefer Newman's confused teen Left Handed Gun (https://youtu.be/9BhhGqb6k4I) (another aspect of the myth Billy the kid itself: the infamous daguerrotype in question has reality preserved in reverse) to Kristofferson's avenger (https://youtu.be/a-e47wAkg9g). But with Peckinpah's film you get bonus James Coburn, Slim Pickens, Harry Dean Stanton, and even Rita Coolidge. Bobbie Gentry [47:55] "Billy the Kid" Patchwork Capitol Records ST-494 1971 Speaking of coincidences. From Bobbie's final studio album. Definitely environmental circumstances. This week we're discussing every album by Mercury Rev. Led by Jonathan Donahue and Grasshopper (with huge contributions by Dave Fridmann), Mercury Rev left their mark on indie rock with their 1998 album, Deserter's Songs. But they have so many other albums that are either insanely underrated or overlooked completely. Their friendship with the Flaming Lips explains the stylistic similarities between the two, but their songwriting stands on its own.Closing track: “Sudden Ray of Hope” from See You on the Other Side (1995)Spotify playlist on Mercury Revhttps://open.spotify.com/user/motherpuncherincPatreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @motherpuncherTom Osman's stuff:Debut album on Bandcamp, Spotify, AppleSubstackInstagramTwitterFacebookMike's Picks:See You on the Other Side (1995) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteInner Autumn Outer Space (2013) — Worst AlbumThe Light in You (2015) — Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:All Is Dream (2001) — Best AlbumSee You on the Other Side (1995) — Personal FavoriteInner Autumn Outer Space (2013) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode..Yerself Is Steam (1991)Boces (1993)See You on the Other Side (1995)Deserter's Songs (1998)All Is Dream (2001)The Secret Migration (2005)Snowflake Midnight (2008)Strange Attractor (2008)Inner Autumn Outer Space (2013)The Light in You (2015)Bobbie Gentry's The Delta Sweete Revisited (2019)
