We've done it this week! My husband Rich and I do some tightrope walking in this episode - difficult topics that I am a little nervous to address. Okay, I actually am not sure if we are on a tightrope or out on a limb, either way, there's some precarious issues we face in this episode. We were unscripted and ended up talking about some things I didn't expect, but boy, are these important topics. (pun may be intended). Won't you come be a part of the conversation? In episode 148 we address topics such as, how to help our kids redefine failure, giving them age-appropriate challenges for growth, restoring with our kids when we have blown it in our parenting, and ways to show our kids we believe in them. We also tiptoe into some pretty difficult topics - such as the No-Father Factor, Toxic Masculinity, Cautions when our child's heart is depleted in an area. All of this in our special Father's Day Week episode of the Practically Speaking MOM Podcast. This conversation may in fact be in my top ten on the podcast so far, out of 148 episodes! This episode is for all parents - from single moms to widows to parents who have a father and a mother in the home. No matter what your family looks like, it is time to take a look at failure, pitfalls to avoid as we give our kids the messages they need to feel believed in and supported in their life, what to do when we blow it as parents (restoring with our kids, even grown kids), and cautions for girls who aren't feeling treasured or sons who aren't feeling capable in life's challenges. While Rich and I have four girls and three boys, our youngest two have been daughters, thus many times my examples on the podcast end up being daughter examples. And, so it is, that I had a goal of making the month of June a very special month on the Practically Speaking MOM Podcast - a month for celebrating sons! While the examples are about boys, the topics are very much applicable to both boys and girls. "Teach your kids the principle: We are to do good in this world with the strengths we have been given. Use your Strengths for GOOD." - episode 148Some questions our sons may be thinking but not saying:Can I be depended on? Will I be able to come through in difficult situations? Am I dependable? Am I capable? Can I achieve challenges that come my way? What can a dad do? What does a mom do if there is no dad or not a healthy involved dad in their daughter or son's lives?STEPS to Giving Kids GROWTH Opportunities:1. Let them do hard things alongside us while we are doing hard things. Include them in our efforts, letting them see our example, and speaking wisdom into them in the skills and mindset needed for the challenges of life.2. Provide opportunities (or identify opportunities) for growth and challenges in their life.3. Prepare them for the opportunity - what tools will they need for success in this challenge?4. Praise specific efforts.5. Help them define their failures - those failures don't define them but are opportunities for motivation and growth!6. Keep letting them work alongside you, Keep creating and identifying more opportunities for growth and continue the process over and over. When a person is depleted in an area of our life (a question in our heart that is not being adequately answered = depleted), we may go searching for the answers or searching for fulfilling our depletion in unhealthy ways. Rich and I give some cautions about this in episode 148 - some cautions for parents of daughters, some cautions for parents of sons...

This episode is less about just one game, but about game design itself. In this mammoth episode the boys go in depth on what it's like to play a game from 1993 in 2021 and how that translates for a busy gamer. Point and Click adventure titles seem to have dwindled in recent years, but how does a compelling tale about ancient African religions and German monster hunters hold up? The boys discuss the standardized verb systems used with games in that time, and the methodology of game direction. With a stellar cast of Tim Curry, Mark Hamill, Leah Remini, Virginia Capers and more, this point & click adventure title features Gabriel Knight, a budding novelist in New Orleans, investigating serial killings which is staged as acts of voodoo, but as he researches deeper, the possibility that voodoo is real starts to unfurl. We also dive into a small touch of PlayStation 5 and Monster Hunter: Rise. Boy: Hi, Dad. Father: Hi, how's it going? Boy: Did you have a good day at work? Father: Same as usual, really. What about you? Good day at school? Boy: Yeah, pretty good. Except for one little thing … Father: Why do I have a sinking feeling in my stomach? Boy: Do you remember you lent me your phone? Father: Yes? Boy: Well, I was standing just outside school, texting Jack, and somebody ran past and grabbed it. Father: You let someone steal my phone? Boy: I didn't let them. Father: No, I suppose not. But did you know that that might happen? Is that a dangerous spot? Boy: Well, I had heard of that happening, but I'd forgotten. Anyway, I didn't think it would happen to me. Father: No, OK. Did you see who it was? Boy: No. It was someone in a blue tracksuit, and there are loads of people who wear those. But there's a CCTV camera on the entrance. It might have got a shot of the thief's face. Father: You reported it then? Boy: Well, not yet, but I will tomorrow. Father: All right. Don't forget to report it tomorrow. I'll have a look at the insurance and see if it's covered.

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs: - 2603 (in 'Jesus Prays') - The evangelists have preserved two more explicit prayers offered by Christ during his public ministry. Each begins with thanksgiving. In the first, Jesus confesses the Father, acknowledges, and blesses him because he has hidden the mysteries of the Kingdom from those who think themselves learned and has revealed them to infants, the poor of the Beatitudes. His exclamation, "Yes, Father!" expresses the depth of his heart, his adherence to the Father's "good pleasure," echoing his mother's Fiat at the time of his conception and prefiguring what he will say to the Father in his agony. the whole prayer of Jesus is contained in this loving adherence of his human heart to the mystery of the will of the Father. - 2701 (in 'Vocal Prayer') - Vocal prayer is an essential element of the Christian life. To his disciples, drawn by their Master's silent prayer, Jesus teaches a vocal prayer, the Our Father. He not only prayed aloud the liturgical prayers of the synagogue but, as the Gospels show, he raised his voice to express his personal prayer, from exultant blessing of the Father to the agony of Gesthemani. - 2785 (in 'Abba-Father') - Second, a humble and trusting heart that enables us "to turn and become like children": for it is to "little children" that the Father is revealed. [The prayer is accomplished] by the contemplation of God alone, and by the warmth of love, through which the soul, molded and directed to love him, speaks very familiarly to God as to its own Father with special devotion (abbreviated). - 240 (in 'The Father Revealed by the Son') - Jesus revealed that God is Father in an unheard-of sense: he is Father not only in being Creator; he is eternally Father by his relationship to his only Son who is eternally Son only in relation to his Father: "No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." - 473 (in 'Christ's Soul and his human knowledge') - But at the same time, this truly human knowledge of God's Son expressed the divine life of his person. "The human nature of God's Son, not by itself but by its union with the Word, knew and showed forth in itself everything that pertains to God." Such is first of all the case with the intimate and immediate knowledge that the Son of God made man has of his Father (abbreviated). - 459 (in 'Why did the Word become Flesh') - The Word became flesh to be our model of holiness: “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me.” “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me" (abbreviated). - 1615 (in 'Marriage in the Lord') - This unequivocal insistence on the indissolubility of the marriage bond may have left some perplexed and could seem to be a demand impossible to realize. However, Jesus has not placed on spouses a burden impossible to bear, or too heavy—heavier than the Law of Moses. By coming to restore the original order of creation disturbed by sin, he himself gives the strength and grace to live marriage in the new dimension of the Reign of God. It is by following Christ, renouncing themselves, and taking up their crosses that spouses will be able to “receive” the original meaning of marriage and live it with the help of Christ (abbreviated). - 544 (in 'The Proclamation of the Kingdom of God') Got a Bible question? I don't care whether you are happily married, a single dad, divorced dad, separated, or live far away from your child in a different country. You are a father. and if you want to learn how to be a good dad, there are some things you have to do. If I had to narrow down the most important things needed to be a good dad, these would be it. In this episode, I'm giving you 3 specific things you need to start doing now. It doesn't matter whether you have a newborn or a grown adult child. #1) Presence - Not gifts, your physical and mental presence. You can't be a good dad if you are not there. Both physically and mentally. Now, if you only see your child once in a while, then make it count when you do see them. I would suggest you do whatever you can to see them more often but I understand everyone has their own circumstances they need to deal with. When we spend time with our kids, make it quality time. I talked with a man who told me a story about only seeing his dad a few weeks every summer when he was growing up. Yet those weeks were some of the best of his life. His dad would take off from work and they would spend quality time together. They went camping, had amazing conversations, and his dad was present. 30 years later, he has an amazing relationship with his father and looks back at his early childhood years with his dad as very positive...yet he only saw him a few weeks a year. If you are with your kids all the time, I understand not every minute can be high quality. But be mindful about putting your phone away, reducing your distractions, and spending that quality time with your child to be present. It goes by fast. #2) The second thing for how to be a good dad is providing your child Affection - For many men, being affectionate towards your child may not come naturally. I don't care. You need to practice and make it natural. No excuses. Give your child hugs, kisses, and as much affection as you can. When they are young, they will hold your hand. They may get to an age where they don't want to do that. Then put your arm around them, give them hugs. The physical touch and coming from their father is so powerful! Touch provides connection, it provides safety. It's like communicating but you don't have to talk. As they grow older they may back off with their affection, but you try not to. Stick with it. Being affectionate with your child is so valuable both for them and for you. The 3rd thing is Empathy - I can't tell you enough how important empathy is in learning how to be a good dad. From your newborn baby to your grown child, being empathetic is the key to a great relationship. Empathy is looking at a situation from the other person's perspective and understanding it from their point of view. Here's an example: Let's say your child comes to you crying and says: "I just fell off my bike and my knee hurts." The normal dad's response might be, "you're ok, I don't see any blood. Shake it off. you'll be fine." Well no, the child is not fine. The child is upset and his knee hurts. So why you don't want to coddle the child, an empathetic response is: "It looks like you are really upset. Falling down and hitting your knee can hurt. Is there something I can do to help you? Do you want to get an icepack?" This has nothing to do with teaching your child to be tough or to get back up when you fall. You can value those things if you want to and still be empathetic. It about your child feeling like you understand them. you are hearing them. Do this hundreds of times with multiple aspects of their lives and you better believe your child will be close to you., will feel comfortable communicating with you and will want to be around you. This is how to be a good dad. I created a series of 7 videos called the Fatherhood Formula. It goes into much more detail about how to be a good dad to your child. We would love to hear from you.
We couldn’t pass up the opportunity to talk about how the unexplainable pain of something as unfortunately common as a single-parent household produced the design and destiny of Steve Dent, who decided not having an earthly father wasn’t going to keep him from achieving and impacting his community and this world. Hence his company’s name: No Father, No Excuse. Join us in the conversation. The governor again said to them, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" And they said, "Barabbas." (Matthew 27:21) Twist of Fate It was a quirky twist of fate that Jesus had on the morning of Good Friday. Here the crowd was faced with a choice. Do they release the Son of God or the notorious criminal named Barabbas (whose name means, "Son of the Father")? No matter who the crowd chooses, one "Son of the Father" will be released and the other condemned. That's a choice that we have on a daily basis. Which "Son of the Father" do you choose? The choice is Jesus as our suffering, dying Savior or Jesus as a great moral teacher and example. We live in a society that wants to be able to get along and not have people "rock the boat." But Jesus is all about "rocking the boat." When He came to earth, it was to turn everything that we know about God and us upside down and inside out. We come to see that our relationship with God is not made better by our works but by Jesus' Passion. His mercy and sinless life is what makes every baptized Christian acceptable to God. Which "Son of the Father" have you chosen? Amen.

Liz: It's nice to get back and put our feet up. Mother: You're telling me! My feet are killing me. But we had such a lovely day, dear. Father: I had no idea that there were such wonderful museums in this city. Mother: I could have spent all day in the art gallery. Liz: Me too Mum; and I was thrilled that there was an exhibition of Paul Klee. I love his work. Father: No, that's not my cup of tea, - too many squares and rectangles. Liz: Oh Dad. It's expressionism. There's a world of expression and depth in all his shapes. Father: Well, there's nothing quite like a Rafael Santi's battle scene. Liz: That's not my cup of tea, thank you very much. I'm a pacifist. Mother: Oh, they're all splendid in their own ways. Today was just the ticket. We're so fortunate to have access to great art.
