California currently ranks 33rd nationally when it comes to per capita investment in its state arts agency.  In late June, Governor Gavin Newsom signed off on a new state budget for the 2026/2027 Fiscal Year. That budget doesn't include funding for California cultural districts. Nevada County has two cultural districts - Grass Valley-Nevada City and Truckee - a rare feat for a rural county. Nevada County Arts and Culture, an arts service organization tasked with supporting local arts and artists, has launched a Cultural District Resilience Fund to limit the impact of this lack in state funding.
