CBDCs are back in the spotlight as the US Congress returns from recess. The Trump administration is preparing a major Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation in Chicago, and it may come as soon as this week. The details have been few and far between, but it would likely increase the number of ICE and Border Patrol agents in the city significantly. According to “border czar” Tom Homan, the White House is even considering taking over a Naval base north of Chicago to hold the “large contingent” of federal agents. Chicago, unsurprisingly, has long been in the crosshairs of President Donald Trump's threats to federally invade cities as part of his so-called crackdown on crime. And Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is not having it. On Saturday, he signed an executive order instructing local police not to cooperate with troops or federal agents if the President's threats come to fruition. For more on the impact that federal arrests have on federal courts, we spoke with Jessica Brand, a lawyer and Executive Director of Wren Collective, a non-profit aimed at criminal justice reform and prosecutorial power. And in headlines: Congress is back in session, a federal judge blocks the Trump administration from deporting hundreds of migrant children to Guatemala, and more than 800 demonstrations take place across the country on Labor Day to protest billionaires taking over the government.Show Notes:Learn more about The Wren CollectiveCall Congress – 202-224-3121Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

Frank is back after a month off with a lot to cover in the current Episode 67. He starts with a review of Canada's handling of forest fires, an area where Canada is arguably a world leader, and what can be done in the new normal to mitigate risk of future forest fire growth. Frank discusses the pros and cons of back to work legislation by the Federal Government used in the Air Canada flight attendant strike and is frustrated whenever one party has too much leverage in work disruptions. After covering the latest on trade negotiations between Canada and the US and the potential sale of infrastructure assets by Canada's Federal Government, he switches gears to US politics, finishing up on Trump's dramatic efforts to broker an end to the Ukraine – Russian war and the gerrymandering of districts fight on-going in Texas. Eddie Yoon breaks down the latest data on the consumer, citing flat PCE and disposable income growth despite inflation headwinds. He believes the 2% inflation rate is "far behind us," and 3% will become the new normal, driven in part by surging energy costs and AI-driven demand. Yoon also notes the potential for a consumer backlash against big tech companies like Microsoft (MSFT), which are driving up energy costs while cutting high-paying jobs. He sees a generational shift in spending habits, with younger consumers favoring experiences and sustainable living over traditional categories like alcohol, which could spell trouble for companies like Boston Beer Company (SAM) and Brown Forman (BF/B).======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. The FDA has begun urging manufacturers to treat cybersecurity risk management as a material business concern. Hal Porter, Director of Consulting Services, Clearwater, speaks with Allyson Maur, Associate, McGuireWoods, about the implications of the FDA's growing focus on cybersecurity as a core component of medical device safety and financial risk and what that shift means for legal, compliance, and risk professionals. They discuss how manufacturers and providers should navigate these expectations, how legal teams can prepare for regulatory scrutiny, and how cyber risk in the device ecosystem is quickly becoming a board-level issue. On this episode, Jason and Matt are joined by their close friend Luis Fernando Mises, along with Jennifer Gillis and Misty Brown, two tireless advocates with the American Kratom Association. Together, we dive deep into the criminalization of kratom — from Louisiana's looming ban to the federal government's quiet war on natural medicine. Luis Fernando Mises is a consultant who teaches leadership across the U.S., a yoga and meditation teacher, a student of Austrian economics, a statesman with the Libertarian Party, a curandero, an entrepreneur, and a family man. He also runs a successful kratom business and brings rare clarity on both the plant and the marketplace. Misty Brown is a fierce kratom advocate and consumer who uses her voice to protect whole-leaf kratom and keep it legal and safe. Her work is personal — helping others fight addiction, chronic pain, anxiety, and depression. Jennifer Gillis has lived with chronic pain for 19 years. After finding real relief through kratom six years ago, she became a dedicated advocate, educator, and truth-teller who supports efforts to keep kratom accessible for all. We begin with the Louisiana ban, where Misty reveals troubling claims of bribery between a sheriff and a rehab clinic pushing the ban behind closed doors. From there, we move to the federal level — breaking down the media's obsession with 7-OH (a lab-concentrated alkaloid being falsely labeled as “kratom”) and how it's fueling disinformation, addiction, and panic. Luis gives clear and grounded advice on avoiding dangerous gas station extracts and choosing safe, whole-leaf kratom instead. We then explore the FDA's alliance with Big Pharma, RFK Jr.'s recent crackdown on 7-OH, and how this could pave the way for a nationwide ban. We dive into Scott Gottlieb's ties to GlaxoSmithKline, the push for synthetic patents, and the blatant monopolization of nature. Then we bring it home with a hard look at the horrors of prohibition through the heartbreaking stories of Shaina Brown and Marshall Price, two innocent people whose lives were upended — and in one case, ended — over this plant. We close with each guest offering real solutions and a final word of encouragement to the millions of Americans who use kratom safely, responsibly, and with purpose. This is a must-listen for anyone who cares about bodily autonomy, plant medicine, and the rising tide of pharmaceutical control. According to a recent survey from Gusto, LGBTQ entrepreneurs are starting businesses in record numbers. Then Transportation Secretary Duffy is targeting Rainbow Crosswalks as distracting and political, though he is basing his opposition for the crosswalks on opinion and no facts or data. Finally, hotel etiquette and respect for staff and public area behavior is a thing of the past. Just in time for Hillary Clinton's 2008 Presidential campaign comes Kathleen Willey's explosive new book that details how her life was changed - and nearly destroyed - by Bill and Hillary Clinton. Target contains never-before-released details of the intimidation campaign launched to silence Kathleen...one way or the other. It provides new insight not just into the death of Kathleen's husband -- on the same day that Bill Clinton assaulted Kathleen in the Oval Office - but into Bill's sexual addiction and Hillary's compulsive enabling, a dangerous combination when partnered with the power of the presidency. Willey makes a persuasive case that Hillary should NOT be returned to the White House in ANY capacity. And, as evidence that the Clintons haven t changed, the terror and harassment continue. Over 2007's Labor Day weekend, Kathleen's home was burglarized. Instead of taking jewelry or computers, the thief took the manuscript for Target, with its explosive revelations that could damage Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. It was a break-in all too reminiscent of an incident 10 years ago in which Kathleen was threatened by a stranger just two days before she was to testify against President Clinton in the Paula Jones sexual harassment case. It's déjà vu all over again -- and time to stop the Clinton machine once and for all.https://amzn.to/4k93dcxBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
In the wake of escalating immigration enforcement targeting vulnerable migrant communities, this Pride Month episode brings essential perspective from the frontlines. In a fiery and urgent monologue, Tara breaks down the escalating threat from Iran—not just to Israel, but to the United States itself. She argues that Iran's ambitions have moved beyond rhetoric, highlighting real attempts on Donald Trump's life, attacks on U.S. naval and commercial vessels, and leaked plans for nuclear grid strikes. Tara claims the Democrat Party has formed a de facto alliance with Iran, turning a blind eye to assassination attempts and continued aggression. She warns that unless this “merger” is broken, future Republican candidates may face life-or-death campaigns from bunkers, targeted by enemies emboldened by silence and complicity at the highest levels of U.S. leadership.
Summer is almost officially here and things are already heating up. From the increasing pressure from Republicans to back Ukraine (a massive win for everyone) to Trump's new half-baked “Golden Dome” defense system to another horrific antisemitic attack on two Israeli embassy staffers in DC, your fearless and always independent host Paul Rieckhoff has you covered. And as the onslaught of crazy news continues to drop, it's easy to lose sight of the wins. To forget about the small victories that keep you during the hard times. And so it seemed like the perfect moment to bring back a returning champion. He's one of the most prominent independents in the country—and his national profile is continuing to grow. Mayor Yemi Mobolade is back and he's here to check in and let you know how it's going—and what he thinks about the future of the movement and the challenges and opportunities the times are presenting. It's a deep look at the state of the independent movement, at what is happening in cities nationwide as Trump continues to expand his reach (especially on immigration), and maybe most importantly, at what is possible for independent political leaders. It's the kind of conversation you're only going to get here. Welcome to the beginning of the Summer of 2025. Welcome to Independent Americans, Episode 336. Mike Johnson's push to gut Medicare and Medicaid isn't just a budgetary decision—it's a declaration of priorities. You, my friend, are not on the priority list. Stripping health care from tens of millions to fund tax breaks for a shrinking circle of billionaires lays bare a political ideology rooted in cruelty and indifference. It's a familiar trade: short-term power for long-term damage, justified by performative piety and cloaked in procedural gamesmanship. Mike Johnson is the reigning Enemy on the Enemies List because his ploy is so cynical, so callous, and so catastrophic to our way of life that it can only be described as evil. This episode is a double-decker! Rick takes your questions in the back half on everything from Elon Musk's public implosion and Trump's ongoing submission to Putin. Learn more about your ad choices. Lindsay Aime remembers the moment his Haitian immigrant community came under a national spotlight. It was September 2024 when then-presidential candidate Donald Trump accused Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, of eating people's pets. To Aime, who is originally from Haiti but has lived in Springfield since 2019, the accusation was not just absurd. It felt like Trump was portraying his entire community as criminal.Today, the estimated 10,000 Haitian immigrants in Springfield are under a different sort of spotlight. The Trump administration is trying to revoke the legal status that allows hundreds of thousands of Haitians and other immigrants to live in the US. Those moves are being challenged in court, but many are feeling panicked and confused. Aime is the co-founder of the Haitian Community Help and Support Center in Springfield, a resource for immigrants looking for legal advice, especially now. “We don't have any good news,” he says. “We keep telling all our people who come in our office: Stay safe, stay safe, stay safe. Stay out of trouble.”On this week's episode of More To The Story, host Al Letson talks with Aime about what it was like when all eyes were on his community during the election, why returning to his home country is not an option, and the challenges of trying to reunite with a son still living in Haiti.Producer: Josh Sanburn | Editor: Kara McGuirk-Allison | Theme music: Fernando Arruda and Jim Briggs | Digital producer: Nikki Frick | Interim executive producers: Taki Telonidis and Brett Myers | Host: Al LetsonDonate today at Revealnews.org/moreSubscribe to our weekly newsletter at Revealnews.org/weeklyFollow us on Instagram and BlueskyListen: Trump's Deportation Black Hole (Reveal)Read: Bomb Threat Prompts Evacuation of Springfield, Ohio, City Hall (Mother Jones)Read: After Jailing of Newark Mayor, DHS Official Warns of “More Arrests Coming” (Mother Jones) Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices
