In the first episode of our "Mental Health at Work" series, my colleague Jenn Mason and I tackled the critical distinction between being tired and being truly depleted. We start by defining burnout as work-related exhaustion that happens over time, while compassion fatigue comes from the emotional toll of over-identifying with the suffering of others. We contend as well, though, that depletion is a much deeper state that impacts your core motivation and ability to connect, going far beyond simple exhaustion. Jenn and I were candid about how leaders, even us, in our own trauma-informed mental health organization—often miss the signs of depletion in ourselves and our teams because the culture rewards "powering through". We also explore the invisible burdens and emotional labor that are so inherent in leadership roles. We believe that a human-centered approach requires building in practices for replenishment. We shared some of our own personal strategies, from recognizing physical stress signals in our bodies to taking small "pit stops" during the day. I also talked about how I started my "Freedom Fridays" (which I've talked about in previous episodes) to build in recovery time before our emotionally-demanding town hall meetings. Ultimately, we want leaders to understand that they must model these healthy behaviors to create psychological safety for their teams. By prioritizing recovery just as much as we prioritize performance, we can proactively address the root causes of depletion before they lead to bigger problems like disengagement and turnover. Or Zones of Genius plural? This term came from the book 'The Big Leap' by Gay Hendricks. Some say it's our purpose and some even say it's our 'superpower'.The best way for me to describe it is that our Zones of Genius are our traits or things that we're naturally good at (it comes easy for us) and it's things or actions that energize us altogether. So for example, I'm good at planning gatherings but I don't absolutely love the tasks that go into it. This isn't my Zone of Genius because I don't love to do it and I don't feel that it's my purpose. Another way to figure this out is if you don't do any of your Zones of Genius, you feel 'empty' or 'off' or even 'down'.If I don't do at least one of the below every so often I won't feel good and I'll be down and out. I've discovered that my Zones of Genius are (in no particular order): 1. Connecting with others2. Encouraging and Motivating others3. Sharing information with othersIt took the most of my life to figure out what they were. I didn't know before this. Self-awareness is a part of self-love. Do you know what your Zone of Genius is or are? If the answer is no, I encourage you to take some time and to do a brain dump and write down what you absolutely love doing as well as what you're naturally good at. Something that comes easy for you that people always say..."you're really good at this!" or "How did you do this so effortlessly?". Remember it also has to be things that you absolutely love doing, too! It's interesting how we are taught and "groomed" (especially women) to look 'outward' for advice and to ask, ask, ask. And to not ever look inward and to follow our instincts and what our intuition is telling us. I'm not speaking about anything that's harming someone else...I have too much empathy for that and I would never preach that. This is for the sole reason of us following our intuition in life and that that is enough. We don't need to ask for permission or to ask for advice or to look outward. It's all within us and isn't it interesting that that's when we seek advice the most? If someone asks you "why are you doing this or that?" or "how come?" you can steal this answer from me which is..."Because I'm following my instincts" and if they keep asking you can follow-up with "My instincts are just that, they're mine and they won't make sense to you"....just like your instincts are yours and they won't make sense to me either". And you can be rest assured that that is enough of a reason. :)~~~~~~~~~~If this or any of my podcast episodes have been of value to you, please subscribe/follow and if you would be so kind as to rate me a 5 star ️️️️️ review? >>>To do a review on: Apple>>> 1. There are a lot misunderstandings around what the term DOR means. Often times when people first hear about DOR, they believe that that the "D" of DOR means "depleted" ovarian reserve. This is not true! To set the record straight, DOR means "decreased" ovarian reserve. The other thing that happens when the word "decreased" gets mixed up for "depleted," is that many people next assume that getting a DOR diagnosis means that they will need to use donor eggs in order to get pregnant. This is also not true! With DOR, you still have eggs, you just don't have as many eggs as you once did. In this episode, I'll be sharing more about DOR. At some point, every one with a uterus will go through it. I'll talk about when egg reserves tend to decline, what tests you can take to determine your egg reserve levels, what you can do to keep your eggs healthy, and when you might consider using donor eggs. I also talk about being an Introvert and Introversion, I speak a little about self-care and I have some quotes in there that I like as well. A little 'preview' of my personality and a taste of what's to come... ;-)~~~~~~~~~~~My absolute joy is to mentor, motivate and encourage others to ..One: be self-aware. One of my favorite Dr. Maya Angelou quotes "when you know better, you do better". Two: with this self-awareness to then break this stigma of what being an introvert really is (it's just how we recharge that's it!) Hello lovelies! Thanks for listening and reading!I met Michelle in 2022 at a women's business conference, and we've been friends ever since.I ended up joining Michelle's community called 'Say Yes to Desire' (formerly called 'Planner Girl Insiders') and I must say Michelle is a breath of fresh air! She designs her life and business around what lights her up and not on what others might want thus putting herself last! You're logging endless kilometres in the pool, on the bike and in your running shoes. Your training plan is meticulous. Yet somehow, the numbers on the scale refuse to budge. If you're feeling exhausted, constantly hungry and frustrated that you’re not losing body fat despite all that training, you're not alone. This is one of the most common struggles I see as an advanced sports dietitian working with triathletes. The truth is, you simply cannot out-train a poor diet. There’s No One Size Fits All Next time you're at an Ironman event, take a look at the athletes around you - they’re all different shapes and sizes. Many of them train 15+ hours a week but still struggle with body composition. The disconnect often stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of how our bodies respond to training and nutrition. It sounds like a contradiction, but under-fuelling during heavy training doesn't lead to fat loss – it leads to compromised recovery, diminished performance and a body that clings desperately to its energy stores. The result? Depleted, exhausted athletes moving further away from their goals with each training session. Balancing Energy Requirements When training for long-course triathlons, your energy demands skyrocket but so many athletes don’t know how to fuel properly. This creates a frustrating cycle: inadequate nutrition leads to poor recovery, which diminishes training quality, which reduces your body's ability to utilise fat as fuel. The end result is often injury, burnout and stalled progress. The Appetite Rollercoaster During heavy training blocks, your appetite regulation can go haywire. Some days you're ravenous; others you have no appetite at all. Add in training fatigue, and you're naturally drawn toward quick-fix carbs and sugars – often consuming more calories than your session actually burned. This isn't a willpower issue – it's your body's natural response to energy demands. But without a strategic approach, these patterns can completely derail your body composition goals. Taking A Strategic Approach Losing body fat while training for triathlon is absolutely possible, but it requires a strategic approach. Rather than drastic calorie cutting or carb cutting, focus on creating sustainable deficits during less critical training windows while continuing to fuel effectively on key training days. The off-season is an ideal opportunity to address body composition without compromising performance. Attempting significant fat loss during peak training or race preparation is almost always counterproductive. Testimonial: Erin Byrge lost 40 pounds while getting faster and stronger Make sure you stay tuned toward the end of the episode where I interview Erin, a member of the Triathlon Nutrition Academy Program, who learned exactly how to shed a significant amount of body fat while fuelling her body for performance. She not only completely changed her body composition, but came out stronger, faster and continues to knock out rockstar race performances. LINKS:

Is the human microbiome an endangered species? Dr. Martin Blaser, author of "Missing Microbes: How the Overuse of Antibiotics Is Fueling Our Modern Plagues," has also been featured in a documentary, The Invisible Extinction, that explores the dire consequences of our depleted microbiomes. Antibiotic overuse, C-sections, lack of breast-feeding, ultra-processed food, lack of exposure to nature, and chlorinated water conspire to deplete our bodies of beneficial bacteria; these imbalances in intestinal flora have profound, far-reaching effects, not just on digestive disorders, but on immunity, metabolism, and brain function. Conditions like insulin resistance, obesity, Parkinson's Disease, depression and anxiety, and many more have been linked to microbiome deficits. What lessons do stool samples from indigenous peoples offer us? There may be a transgenerational effect of microbiome depletion. Dr. Blaser has gone so far as to advocate a Microbiome Vault to preserve our bacterial heritage. Are fecal transplants and poop pills the answer? “Vaginal seeding”? What role do high-fiber diets play? Are fermented foods beneficial? What about probiotics? Dr. Blaser describes measures we need to take now to recover our microbial diversity.
Dr. Hoffman continues his conversation with Dr. Martin Blaser, author of "Missing Microbes: How the Overuse of Antibiotics Is Fueling Our Modern Plagues."

My client Maura came to me when she was struggling to fall asleep and would go days without sleeping if she wasn't taking a sleeping pill. She was taking Trazodone and Lexapro to sleep and feel calm. She was a mom to 2 young children and she had to take a leave from teaching because she wasn't sleeping. Her goal was to sleep 7 hours a night, get off meds, and not feel anxious about sleep. By the end of our time working together, she achieved all of these goals! "In 2 months I weaned off Trazodone. On average I'm sleeping 7-8 hours a night and feeling a lot better.”Her test results showed:Depleted sex hormonesLiver dysfunctionMold toxicity (from the school where she worked!)Mineral imbalancesH. pyloriDysbiosis (imbalance of good to bad gut bacteria)Gluten sensitivity All of these imbalances were affecting her sleep!I recommended supplements and diet changes which she immediately embraced. We also worked on stress about sleep and so her anxiety about sleep improved pretty quickly. She even slept well when she traveled to Ireland. She emailed me after her trip: “I returned from my trip to Ireland yesterday. I was so nervous about sleeping in various hotels in a different time zone. I did great and slept really well. Each night I slept between 7-8 hours. My anxiety about sleep is so much better."Maura was 100% committed to the process and because of that, she had great success!“I loved having a plan, knowing we're going to work together, slowly add supplements, then slowly take them away. I appreciated having support and being able to email you. Having someone in my court. I wasn't in this alone. And it doesn't take the whole time (6 months)."By the end of our time working together, Maura was back to work teaching when the school year started! You can listen to her story on the podcast.Maura loved the step-by-step, simple plan I gave her in the Complete Sleep Solution program because then she knew exactly what to do to get better. She was relieved that all she had to do was follow her protocol, without questioning if it was right for her.She stopped googling about how to sleep better and trying random supplements and gadgets because she had a plan customized for her life and body. If Maura can get better, you can, too! Schedule a free consultation on Zoom to get started so you can consistently sleep 7+ hours a night without drugs!I'll tell you exactly why everything you've tried so far hasn't worked (even though you're doing everything you can to sleep well) and how the Complete Sleep Solution program will find and fix all the root causes of your sleep and health issues once and for all. 00:00 Introduction: Overcoming Sleep Issues Without Drugs00:15 Meet Maura: A Journey to Better Sleep00:40 Understanding the Root Causes of Sleep Problems01:27 Personal Anecdote: The Importance of Good Sleep04:21 Maura's Struggles and Goals05:04 Identifying and Addressing Health Imbalances06:53 Overcoming Anxiety and Traveling Success07:46 Maura's Success and Return to Normalcy09:17 The Complete Sleep Solution Program09:42 Conclusion: How You Can Achieve Better Sleep
