Finally, Albert will have a new FC Seoul player to go watch as Hwang Uijo finally announced his loan move to the K League this week. We also made some fun predictions about the EPL second half, the Bundesliga, and our Champions League Round of 16 picks. It's going to be fun to listen to this one in a few months to see just how right or wrong we were. K League is finally back and the weekend brought goals, shocks and a surprising number of clean sheets. In K League 2, newcomers Gimpo FC kicked off their first game with a win against recently relegated Gwangju FC while Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors stretched their unbeaten opening day streak to 11 years.   Elsewhere in K League 1 Suwon Samsung Bluewings fell to Incheon United after being reduced to ten men early on, while FC Seoul got off to an uncharacteristically winning start, seeing off last seasons third-placed finishers Daegu FC. Sunday's top flight action also saw Gangwon see off Seongnam, Pohang overthrow Jeju and newly-promoted Gimcheon Sangmu, reduced to ten men, hold Ulsan Hyundai.   K League 2 also saw wins for FC Anyang, Seoul E-Land while Busan drew with Ansan Greeners and Bucheon ended goalless with Chungnam Asan.   Alex and Khaelby comb through the action to give their takeaways from the opening round.

Maangchi, pronounced MAHNG-chee and meaning “hammer” in Korean, was the name of her online avatar, who specialized in destruction, wielding a huge scimitar and wearing a tiny miniskirt. In 2007, her children persuaded her to try a more nourishing form of Internet expression: cooking videos. “I had no idea if anyone would watch me,” she said, “but the Korean recipes I saw in English were full of mistakes, and I wanted to show the real way we do things.” 2007年,孩子們勸她嘗試一種更有營養的網路表達方式:烹飪視頻。 Now, Ms. Kim has more than 619,000 YouTube subscribers. At age 58, she has just published a cookbook, “Maangchi's Real Korean Cooking,” one of the few comprehensive books on Korean cooking written for Americans, but without major adjustments to make the food more accessible. From watching her videos, it is hard to envision Ms. Kim as a reclusive gamer. In extravagant eye makeup and bright pink lipstick, she cooks huge batches of bibimbap, bulgogi and KFC, sweet-sticky-spicy Korean fried chicken. She demonstrates the endless variations of kimchi and schools her viewers in the pronunciation of dishes like soegogi-muguk (pronounced SAY-go-gee moo-GUHK), beef and radish soup. Although she presents herself as lighthearted, Ms. Kim is first and foremost a teacher, and a strict one at that. “I have to do everything correctly,” she said. “Otherwise I will hear about it from the Koreans.” This is a phrase she often repeated to the editors of her cookbook when they quailed at including recipes for fermented sardines, jellyfish salad and kelp stock. This, Ms. Kim believes, is the problem with virtually every Korean restaurant in the United States: The food is sweeter, saltier, less spicy, less fishy and less rich with umami than it should be. Ms. Kim was raised in Yeosu, near the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula, where her family was in the seafood business. She learned from her mother, aunts and grandmothers how to not only cook but also pickle, smoke, dry and ferment. Ms. Kim first came to the United States in 1992 with her husband, who emigrated to take a teaching job in Missouri. In the Midwest, she would lead fellow expatriates on expeditions in search of Japanese or Chinese restaurants. Now, she lives and shoots her videos in a compact apartment perched above Times Square. She shares the apartment with David Seguin, a web developer at The New York Times, whom she married in 2009. There, she practices the slow and ancient art of fermenting, making gochujang (chile paste) and doenjang (soybean paste), an umami-rich flavor element pervasive in Korean cooking. The recipe calls for an electric blanket, about four liters of salt and hay; it takes almost a year to complete. Traditionally, even a basic family dinner consists of 8 to 10 different dishes: soup or stew, rice, kimchi, often a stir-fry of protein and vegetables, and at least three side dishes like spicy cucumber salad or steamed eggplant. “There is nothing Koreans love more than sitting around a table where every inch is covered with food,” Ms. Kim said. “And if there is a grill in the middle of it, that is even better.” Source article: https://paper.udn.com/udnpaper/POH0067/282065/web/

It's a two man booth as Paul Neat and Ryan Walters go over the early returns in the K League transfer window. It may still early January, but a number of big names have already made their moves, and as Patreon subscribers well know, there are plenty of rumors to mull over as well.   The two pick some the headline grabbing official transfers to discuss such as Na Sang-ho to FC Seoul, the exodus at Ulsan, and the smart business being done by Suwon FC and Gangwon FC. They then make up their ideal transfer out of thin air, and unsurprisingly ASEAN players get a mention. All that an more in this EXTRA edition of the K League United Podcast!

Ryan Walters welcomes by Matthew Binns and George Slade to the virtual Kim Do-hoon Bunker to break down the K League 2 playoff matches of the season. They start in Changwon where Gyeongnam FC moved on after a 1-1 draw against Daejeon Hana Citizen with a disputed VAR call taking center stage late in the game. The conversation then shifts North where Suwon FC also benefitted from being the higher seed and was promoted to K League 1... after a contentious late VAR call. After getting most of the VAR whinging out of the way, they do briefly discuss why Suwon went up and whether or not this playoff system is the right one moving forward.   The second segment brings reprieve from VAR in the form of AFC Champions League. Ryan, Matt, and George go group by group assessing each K League team's performance thus far. They start with the rollercoaster that has been FC Seoul from their 5-0 dismantling of Chiangrai United to back-to-back losses. Moving on to Group F, they talk about Yoon Bit-garam's meteoric rise on the international stage and the Horangi securing top spot in the group. Group G brings up the Suwon Samsung Bluewings unenviable position of having to beat Vissel Kobe by multiple goals in order to advance. And finally, they discuss the first Korean team eliminated from the contest: Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.    Lastly, the three open up a full Eulji Lewis Mailbag with questions ranging from formations to ACL, and back to – you guessed it – VAR. Ryan Walters is joined for the first time in a long time by Paul Neat and George Slade to discuss a range of topics as Korean football refuses to slow down despite K League 1 and the FA Cup being done and dusted. The three pick up in Austria where the Korean National team lost and won friendly matches against Mexican and Qatar, but the largest talking point came off the field with several players and staff testing positive for COVID 19. The hosts discuss whether or not these matches should have taken place, and which players should (or shouldn't) have been called in.    They then switch focus to the resumption of AFC Champions League where Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, FC Seoul, Suwon Samsung Bluewings, and Ulsan Hyundai all played over the weekend. They begin with a discussion on ACL's format and some potential changes, and then each give one takeaway from the four matches.    The third segment shifts focus to the final match day of the K League 2 season and the VAR controversy that plagued Seoul E-Land vs Jeonnam Dragons. They discuss Julian Kristoffersen's multiple disallowed goals as well as that handball non-call. They then briefly discuss Gyeongnam FC's 1-0 victory over Daejeon Hana Citizen which ensured the exact same match up just a few days later.    The final segment sees the hosts briefly preview Gyeongnam vs Daejeon's playoff match before they give way to Paul's interview with Australian midfielder Connor Chapman. The two discuss Daejeon's season thus far, expectations, and the looming playoff matches.    All that and more in this edition of the K League United Podcast.

We start this week's show with a heavy heart honoring the late Kim Nam-chun. Kim was found in his apartment on October 30th from an apparent suicide according to police. A ceremony was held in his honor the following day at Seoul World Cup Stadium to pay tribute to him ahead of the FC Seoul's game with Incheon United.   In speaking with his teammates and seeing the outpouring of love on social media over the weekend, it's clear Kim was a popular member of FC Seoul and with other players around the league who he had spent time with at Sangju. All of us at K League United send our most sincerest condolences to Kim Nam-chun's family, friends, and teammates in this difficult time. May he rest in peace.    After a break, Ryan Walters is joined by regular co-hosts Matthew Binns and Peter Hampshire to put a lid on the 2020 K League 1 season. They start with Final A where Jeonbuk was once again crowned champions for a record-breaking fourth straight time. The three go over just how wrong their pre-season predictions were, the biggest surprise in Final A, biggest disappointment, and look into the future and guess whether each team will finish higher or lower in 2021.    Ryan, Matt, and Peter rinse and repeat for Final B where both Incheon and Seongnam won back to back games to end the season on a high and avoid relegation. After answering a few early mailbag questions about Incheon's chances of avoiding the same story next season and Busan's need to rebuild, Paul Neat joins in with an interview with Incheon United's Stefan Mugoša. They discuss the Mariners pulling off another dramatic escape, off season plans, and what's next for the Montenegrin striker.    After a brief FA Cup Final preview, the hosts hop into the Eulji Lewis Mailbag. Questions range from what's next for Ulsan to Jeju's chances back in K1, and touch on former U22 players options next season. All that and more in this edition of the K League United Podcast!

The three also discuss the Dave Bulthuis and Bjørn Johnsen red cards that will see both miss the last two matches of the season.    The relegation battle takes center stage in the second segment where FC Seoul managed to finally get mathematical safety from the drop. Whether or not this is something they can build on for ACL is another story according to Matthew. They also discuss Incheon's Great Escape chances, Seongnam's tough schedule, and Busan's outlook heading into the final weeks.    Michael Redmond joins for the third segment to talk about the wild world that is K League 2. Jeju and Suwon remain locked in a heated battle for automatic promotion while Ryan's Jeonnam Dragon's and Michael's Seoul E-Land hold down third and fourth for the final playoff spots. They discuss whether or not the teams can hold on and what to expect in the few remaining fixtures.    Before hopping in the Eulji Lewis Mailbag, Dan returns to preview this weekend's title decider between Ulsan and Jeonbuk and once again defends his manager. Ryan Walters is joined by Matthew Binns and Peter Hampshire to discuss the first Double Dragon Derby between Ki Sung-yueng's FC Seoul and Lee Chung-yong's Ulsan Hyundai. While it was a rather straightforward win for the league leaders on the pitch, the off-field effect of so many national team stars on Korean shores will be felt for a while. The madness that was Gwangju FC's 6-4 victory over Daegu FC closes the first segment. They discuss how the Yellows pulled off the massive win, what's gone wrong at Daegu, and what the result means for the league table.  On the note of massive results, they shift focus to Gangwon beating Jeonbuk for the second time this season and give their takeaways on the loss that opened up a bigger lead for Ulsan atop the table. While discussing Jeonbuk, Ryan and Peter (kinda) attempt to console a teary-eyed Matthew as he gives his eulogy on Kim Jin-su with the defender set to take the field for Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.  Because it isn't a KLU Pod without a little K2, the third segment starts with the growing gap between Jeju, Suwon, and the rest of the second division. Most notably, Daejeon have fallen into the playoff pool and are very close to dropping even farther. As if summoned by the mention of Daejeon, Paul Neat makes an appearance in the first of his new segment, Korean Football Roundup, where Paul gives a brief overview of the going ons for Korean footballers across the globe. Lastly, the Eulji Lewis Mailbag sees the hosts answer questions about everything from K League becoming a selling league to José Morais' abilities as a manager, and a whole lot in between. The three start in K2 with table predictions that have mostly held the test of time. They then move into individual awards that... have not. With a few of the nominated players no longer in Korea and others vastly underperforming, Matt, Paul, and Ryan have the option to double down on their original pick, or regret their choice and nominate someone new.    The second segment sees the hosts go over some significantly more miscalculated K1 table predictions, including a very optimistic position for FC Seoul. The individual awards don't see as many regrets, but do garner quite a few shout outs to players hitting their stride this season.   A very full Eulji Lewis Mailbag has questions on the fate of the post Choi Yong-soo FC Seoul, Incheon United's survival hopes, whether or not Junior Negrão is the best striker in Asia right now, and debating if Pohang has what it takes to finish in a Champions League position this year.    All that and more in this edition of the K League United Podcast.

They each give their main takeaways from a high scoring weekend that saw some lopsided results in K1, and narrow victories in the increasingly tight K2.   Matthew sits down with Suwon FC forward and South African international Lars Veldwijk in the second segment to discuss his move from Jeonju to Suwon. The two discuss the trend of players moving directly to Korea from the Eredivisie, the reason he left Jeonbuk, fitting in to a very good Suwon side, and what promotion would mean to his new club.    The third segment sees Ryan, Matthew, and George look ahead to the weekend to preview the upcoming matches in both divisions and which games to keep an eye on in particular. A number of teams next to each other in the table square off in K1 and K2, and there's plenty of mention of a certain manager that probably should be on the hot seat right now.    Finally, they catch up on previous Eulji Lewis Mailbag questions from weeks past regarding Jeonbuk success and how much José Morais influences it... if at all.
