Fulbright scholar, world-renowned photographer and publisher of 15 beautiful books on Architecture, Interior Design and Gastronomy, Jill Paider, tells it like it is.  She shares stories of pushing through the fear, and the importance of not waiting to be perfect. “Sometimes you just have to fake it ‘til you make it!”, Jill says. She has traveled to more than 91 countries photographing some of the world’s greatest architecture.  One of Jill’s latest books, Carry-on Only Confessions from 100 Countries, a travel memoir, is a compilation of photos from her experience as a solo traveler around the world.   Can you believe she travels for months on end with only a carry-on? Traveling as an unmarried woman can get very interesting at times.  Jill describes very candidly how other people’s projections toward her as a single woman has made her question herself at times. Jill gives us an authentic overview of many issues, but most importantly, how she navigated a complete pivot and reinvention from a career in world politics and finance, to a successful career as a creative and photographer.  Jill believes women are the future of travel. You will love reading Jill’s blog and new podcast, Travel in Style. She is a breath of fresh air and certainly another beautiful woman of ageless mind and spirit. Leah Guy, has been working as an intuitive transpersonal healer, spiritual teacher, inspirational speaker, and media personality We discuss the mind-body connection, energy-medicine, as well as emotional and spiritual healing. She is the author of The Fearless Path: A Radical Awakening to Emotional Healing and Inner Peace, Leah shares about the importance of mental and emotional health.  Her intuitive approach to wellness is based around the belief every thought carries an inherent emotional element which is stored in our bodies and memory.  The path to wellness has to include learning how to witness and process the mind and the emotions. This is needed to get to a place of peace or even begin to find any kind of enlightenment.  Just “letting go” of a difficult experience or person does nothing to actually process the emotion. When unprocessed this causes a disconnection with the self which can deny happiness and peace in your life.  Leah describes three trouble zones when your not balanced emotionally and physically: - Our mind tries to run us and can be self defeating. - Our emotions try to break us away from the pain. - Our spirit becomes crippled in the attempt for growth. This is the formula where for feeling like you are on a hamster wheel of unhappiness and depression.  Have to connect the emotional with the physical and deal with them simultaneously in order to begin to heal. Positive emotional exercises: Stay connected to the Earth- Many ways to connect with nature, even grow a seedling into a plant and care for it.   -Volunteer- Hospice, retirement home or even with animals These things can help ground you and help to connect you to something outside of yourself.  We also talk Chakras and the balance needed in sleep, nutrition and exercise. Fear is a huge factor in blocking our capacity to move forward.  It is sometimes impossible to take that first step to reinvent or even start a new habit if you feel poorly. Can you name 5 things that turn you on?  We have to ignite our passions and be kind to ourselves. “You can only heal that which you understand and know. You have to be in touch with your inner self and emotions.”   Leah Guy on You Tube www.Leahguy.com www.modernsage.com (Has her product line here)   Reccomended Book: The Fearless Path: A Radical Awakening to Emotional Healing and Inner Peace, Leah Guy   HELP US SPREAD THE WORD!   Would you  like to get a weekly reminder of our upcoming shows? Dr. Kathy Gruver, Ph.D,  is a motivational speaker that specializes in stress reduction, communication, practical presence and more.  Kathy helped develop a stress reduction program for the US military and has studied mind/body medicine at Harvard University.   She is an award-winning author of 7 books, health practitioner, and TEDx speaker, and was the host of a national TV series, The Alternative Medicine Cabinet. Kathy has a list of extra curricular activities that would make the most avid adventure seeker envious.   She scuba dives, swims with sharks, rope courses, bungee jumping and flying trapeze. Her mantra is “Go For it!” She is  a self proclaimed Type A personality and we discuss how she teaches others through her practice to Change your Focus and manage stress and think about change.  It is the one thing we can always expect even though we dislike it. One of her mantras : “Go from a Worrier to a Warrior” helps people to see there is no sense in suffering twice by worrying before it happens and then experiencing the effects if something difficult does take place.  Typically, everything works out anyway. We discuss the science of our brain and affirmations or thoughts. These repetitive thoughts keep hitting synapse in the brain with a chemical that goes back and forth. This chemical process becomes so strong and forms a synapse and connection.  Let’s switch our thoughts. We discuss how she stays so productive and she admits to others on the outside she may look scattered but her system works for her. Her secret for reinvention is her passion for helping people. Loves the immediate constant reinforcement from her clients that she helps and spreads her positivity.  A smile can do wonders.   “You can stand on the train track but you don’t have to get on every train that goes by, you wait for the one you bought the ticket for.”   Atlas Obscura  great travel site Dealt Documentary of Magician House of Cards Magic, Nashville   Social: @klgruver  twitter http://kathygruver.com/ @kathygruver (FB and Insta) @DrKathyGruver (YouTube page) check out her trapeze videos! Alex J. Swanson is the founder of Nutrition Genome and creator of the software Genetrition. Alex is the son of our own “Ask Cheri” guest, Cheri Swanson.  Influenced by his mom, he has taken nutrition to the next level.  Alex explains how the Nutrition Genome works through a saliva sample from a cheek swab which holds your very own DNA.  This is then shipped to a lab where they sequence and genotype it which is how to get DNA.  This  gives them a data file on all your genes.   They then look at the data and make sense of it.  This information relates to your brain and heart health, hormones, digestion and different parts of the body.  Nutrigenomics is how your body responds to diet and how your genes respond to food.  We are all a little different and all this relates back to our ancestors….how they ate and where they lived accumulates to who you are now.     The Nutrition Genome removes the fear around genetic testing...showing how your genes are not necessarily your destiny, but rather your blueprint.  Once you understand the blueprint you know how to make modifications and changes to help reduce the risk of disease.  You can take steps to facilitate and help your own biochemistry to be its healthiest.  You get a software report with genes for each section which shows gene variance (what makes you different from other people).   All of this traces back to our migration roots.     HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR INTERVIEW:   We focus on Brain Awareness and Mental Health month so we talk about Alzheimer's prevention.     When people have certain variances in the APOE gene (a gene that has to do with cholesterol as well as protects the brain neurons), they have reduced protection against Alzheimer’s.  This genotype increases the risk of Alzheimer's and has both pros and cons (Pros: higher bone density, less risk of infertility, better calcium and Vitamin D absorption, less miscarriages).    2/3 of all Alzheimer's patients are women.   Avoid inflammation by eating foods that are anti-inflammatory, such as foods that are high in choline and folate (egg yolks, chicken thighs vs. breast, liver, organ meats, nuts, broccoli, romaine lettuce, oranges, fenol, berries, freshly ground flax seeds, hops tea).   Sleep is super important — you should be getting 7 ½ to 8 ½ hours per night.   Important to fast 12-14 hours after your last meal (intermittent fasting) to give your body time to reset and filter.   Focus on exercise and movement.   Women can boost estrogen with foods and phytoestrogen (phytoestrogens foods: flax seeds, hops IPA beers and hops tea)   Exotic mushrooms help the body adapt to stress (Chaga, Lions Mane, Reiche, Shiitake, Nayataki)   Good brands for medicinal mushrooms: Mushroom Science and Fungi Perfecti    Good brands for medicinal mushrooms: Mushroom Science Fungi Perfecti   Book: The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who've Lived the Longest By, Dan Buettner   Genome Testing: (*need affiliate link here) www.Nutrtiongenome.com   Alex Swanson M.S. www.nutritiongenome.com www.thehealthbeat.com www.swansonhealthcenter.com   HELP US SPREAD THE WORD!   Would you  like to get a weekly reminder of our upcoming shows? June is Brain Awareness and Mental Health month.  Ladies Roadmap is shining a light on Alzheimer’s and today we are at the Alzheimer’s OC headquarters in Irvine, CA with the CEO Jim McAleer.  There are over 84,000 people who suffer from Alzheimer's in Orange County alone and at least 34,000 Caregivers. Alzheimer’s Orange County is a community based non profit organization providing free programs and services for local families affected by Alzheimer’s and Dementia. All of us knows someone whose been affected by this debilitating disease in some fashion, whether as a patient or caregiver.  “Unfortunately, ladies it is far more likely to be a woman affected. You are twice as likely to get this disease and 66% of all caregivers are women.” There are many forms of Dementia, Alzheimer’s is just one form. What kind of doctor should you go to if you are concerned about yours or a loved ones memory? There is no cure at this time but many forms are treatable so get checked early if concerned!  Exercise and diet are so important. Brain and heart health are one in the same. Many of the services provided at ALZOC are for the caregivers, teaching them how to not only care for their loved ones but also for themselves. “It’s the airplane rule, you have to put your own oxygen mask on first before you can help others long term.” We also hear 2 brave caregiver’s stories. Phyllis Greenberg shares her valuable story and journey with her beloved husband Morris.  Jan Ebert shares her poignant story, as a loving daughter, with her dear mother. How do you recognize the signs of Alzheimer's and what do you look for in a loved one? They have different experiences and share some very important information and tips on how to not only take care of a loved one with Alzheimer's but how they took care of themselves. The importance of being honest and open with your friends and family. Alzheimer's is not a topic we want to talk about, but we must with so many people suffering and the numbers increasing every year.  Tune into the next episodes where we discuss more about prevention, or at least delaying the onset of Alzheimer's. We will bring you more tips to stave off this disease as we share Maria Shriver’s “Move the Minds” event and fundraiser!   We can all help!  Please reach out and support your local Alzheimer’s organization.     Alzheimer's Orange County www.alzoc.org (949) 955-9000   Where to get tested: Clinical Psychologist Diagnostic Clinics   In Orange County you can go to: Health Assessment Program for Seniors (HAPS) UC Irvine Health Orange County, CA  and UCI MIND (Orange County’s Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at the UC Irvine Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders   Coach Broyles Playbook for Alzheimer’s Caregivers: A Practical Tips Guide By J. #21: First Woman to Reach the Summit of Mount Everest from Both the North and South Sides with Cathy O'Dowd

Cathy O’Dowd is South African and was the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest climbing from both sides.  She wrote a best selling book about her experience called, Just for the Love of it. Cathy, shares about the expedition in a way that may surprise people. The title for the book came to her because she was tired of hearing men write about “The Death Zone and Killer Mountain”, she says it is actually really fun. Her focus is on the importance of team work and relationships with the other climbers and how the experience gave her a much greater insight to human behavior.  This is where, Cathy says, business and mountain climbing intersect. Many times the “Type A”, leaders in the world are not the best at communicating with their teammates. They are more focused on the competition and being the first one to the top.  This is not the most effective way to deal with big challenges when climbing a mountain or running a business. The success of any mission depends on communication and who can endure and collaborate together to get over the finish line. This is where women shine and yet many times we are greatly underrated by ourselves and others.  She learned to step up, value her own opinion and accept failure. “As a mountain climber, you have to know when to turn around and realize the failure of an expedition which can have dictate a life or death outcome. ” Cathy says even though she made it to the summit, the expedition was a failure in many respects as 3 team members walked out shortly into the climb and one climber died. Cathy’s Everest experience and her success to the summit, to her surprise, paved the path to a carreer in motivational speaking.  She speaks to groups and corporations around the world on how to build a strong team and work environment. We discuss the difference in the way men and women assert themselves.  Why do women lack confidence when it comes to giving their input but men, who may have little to no expertise, are far more forthcoming with their opinions and advice?  Cathy tells us how she and only one other woman ended up on this expedition with the South African team and is candid about her reservations to join the group. It did not take long to learn, as she kept expecting the men to open a space for her to give her input, that it was not going to happen .  “Although uncomfortable, a woman has to step into the noise, put her elbows out and push a space for herself.” Cathy continues to climb all over the world and has so much to share from her mountain and rock climbing expeditions.  She has turned her experiences into a wealth of human understanding and knowledge you won’t want to miss.
