Host Karen Roberts - https://karenrobertscoaching.com Special Guest Dr. Kathy Gruver Welcome to an inspiring episode of The Coffee with Karen podcast! Today, we are honored to be joined by the remarkable Dr. Kathy Gruver, a true embodiment of wisdom and vitality. With an impressive background spanning over three decades in MINDBODY medicine and human behavior, Kathy is not just an award-winning author, but also a dynamic professional speaker, certified coach, and a force to be reckoned with. Her journey has taken her across continents, cruise ships, and even to the prestigious world of TEDx talks. Beyond her impressive accolades, Kathy's journey is a testament to her resilience and determination. From her early days discovering her dual passions for acting and healing, she embraced a nonlinear path that eventually led her to a fulfilling career in holistic well-being. Her ability to say "yes" to life's opportunities propelled her through diverse experiences, from Hollywood to Santa Barbara, and expanded her expertise to include reiki, homeopathy, hypnosis, and more. Today, Kathy brings her wealth of knowledge to our podcast, delving into the omnipresent challenge of stress in our modern lives. In a world fueled by gadgets, gizmos, and ceaseless connectivity, stress has become a constant companion. Her insights shine a light on the crucial practice of acknowledging stress while mastering our reactions to it. Drawing parallels between stress and our innate fight-or-flight response, she offers guidance on reshaping our narrative and finding balance. Mindfulness emerges as a powerful tool as Kathy shares the teachings of Eckhart Tolle. By embracing the present moment and accepting its essence, we gain the ability to transform our reactions to stressors, fostering positive outcomes. The conversation also navigates through the profound impact of stress on various dimensions of our lives, highlighting its influence on relationships, financial health, and self-image. In the era of social media dominance, Kathy and Karen explore the shadow side of technology, underscoring the importance of self-awareness and establishing boundaries to safeguard our mental well-being. Kathy's journey from actress to healing expert underscores the multifaceted nature of true health, emphasizing the integration of mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects for a vibrant life. As we wrap up this enlightening episode, Kathy invites us to embark on a journey of self-discovery and self-care. By recognizing our unique stress triggers and understanding our individual responses, we gain the tools to conquer stress and live authentically. Kathy delves deeper into the crucial realm of self-awareness, shedding light on how external influences often lead us to relinquish our power to outside authorities. The conversation centers on the foundation of personal growth – introspection. By looking within, we can recognize the signs of stress that manifest physically and behaviorally. The rise of social media and digital distractions, while offering connectivity, has diminished genuine self-awareness. Our host urges listeners to reconnect with the present moment and prioritize their inner well-being over external validation. The concept of internal family systems takes center stage, offering a new lens through which to view our behaviors and reactions. Through relatable examples, the host illustrates how various ego states or "parts" influence our actions. The key lies in understanding and harmonizing these parts for a balanced life. Balancing ego states proves pivotal; embracing the multifaceted aspects of our personalities fosters equilibrium. Kathy shares personal anecdotes that shed light on the intricate nature of ego states, demonstrating how they trigger different behaviors and even alter handwriting. The interaction between these states and their potential to lead to misunderstandings and conflicts is explored. The segment delves into the "self" state, a haven of compassion, calmness, and connection. Staying grounded in the "self" state offers a tool for managing interactions and navigating challenges. Listeners are introduced to practical strategies for recognizing and understanding their ego states. By acknowledging the strengths and weaknesses of each state, individuals can effectively navigate complex situations. The segment concludes with a call for consistent practice and self-compassion, echoing the teachings of Eckhart Tolle in embracing ego states for personal growth and well-being. In the final segment of this enriching podcast, Kathy Gruver and the host explore the path to healing ego states and unlocking our true potential. Healing these aspects leads to reduced reactivity and healthier coping mechanisms, eliminating the need for harmful substances or behaviors. Acknowledging and thanking each ego state, even the seemingly irrational ones, creates a harmonious internal dialogue. Dr. Gruver outlines the process of healing ego states, which involves seeking guidance from coaches or therapists who specialize in this area. Her interactive cards provide a tangible tool for self-exploration, aiding in the separation of positive and potentially detrimental ego states. By understanding the origins and underlying needs of these states, individuals can gradually heal and integrate them. Trauma, both big and small, plays a significant role in shaping ego states. Dr. Gruver emphasizes that everyone has experienced moments of trauma that contribute to these states' formation. The journey of healing involves revisiting these moments and addressing the unmet needs of these parts. Listeners are provided with valuable resources to connect with Kathy Gruver, offering coaching, workshops, and motivational speaking to guide individuals on their journey to healing and self-awareness. Her upcoming book, "Just Be Yourself: Using Ego States," promises practical insights for navigating life's challenges. As the episode draws to a close, the hosts reflect on the challenges of staying present and practicing self-compassion. Integrating ego state work into daily life holds the potential for profound personal growth and a more fulfilling existence. The transformative power of embracing ego states resonates, encouraging listeners to embark on their own transformative journeys of self-discovery and holistic well-being. In summary, this podcast episode featuring Kathy Gruver takes listeners on a profound journey of self-awareness, stress management, and personal growth. Building personal resilience involves taking care of both body and mind. To help do this, many people are increasingly turning to “alternative medicine” as Western medicine seems inadequately equipped to deal with disease prevention and optimal performance. At the same time, the world of alternative therapies is fraught with confusing information and dishonest practitioners. This is why Dr. Kathy Gruver's work is so valuable. Kathy is my guest in this week's episode. She is someone who can bridge the gap between Western medicine and alternative therapies. Kath is a health expert, author, television host and speaker. Kathy has for many years focused on the mind-body connection and alternative medicine. Get ready to be inspired and entertained. Today's special guest, Dr. Kathy Gruver, delivers life-changing information in a fun and down-to-earth manner. She is an award-winning author, health practitioner, PhD, hip-hop dancer and trapeze artist. She is the host of the new national TV series, The Alternative Medicine Cabinet. But, her natural health career started, unknowingly, at the young age of 6 when she would massage her dad's neck on long car trips. Years later watching him care for her dying mother sparked even more interest in alternative medicine, life options and helping others heal. With a background in theatre and bad fast food, Dr. Gruver overcame her addiction to caffeine, artificial sweetener and meals that were eaten in the car. Now, decades after her mother died of cancer and 15 years since her last drink of soda, Kathy, with her 'Go for it' attitude, makes it a point to help others navigate the sometimes-confusing world of nutrition, stress reduction, natural health and mind/body medicine. Dr. Gruver has earned her PhD in Natural Health. She has studied mind-body medicine at the famed Benson-Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine at Harvard Medical School and is a natural health practitioner with over two decades of experience. She has penned countless articles, contributed as an expert to dozens more, appears regularly as an expert on radio and TV and has written five books. She has lectured around the world for everyone from nurses in the Middle East to 911 dispatchers in New Orleans, corporations around the US and teachers in her own backyard. She just completed work on a project for the military to create and institute a stress reduction program.
