In his book Tolkien, Philosopher of War (Catholic University of America Press, 2024), McAleer uncovers Tolkien's critique of Enlightenment thought and his deep concern with the apocalyptic politics of his time. He argues that Tolkien's metaphysical, political, and aesthetic views—shaped by a rejection of gnosticism, a defense of monarchy, and a resistance to Futurism—offer a unique perspective on the dangers of progressivism and total war. We explore Tolkien's personal experience which inform his writings and the processes by which he was able to sculpt these great works and systems of thought. This conversation sheds light on Tolkien's modern critique of political ideologies and offers new insights for readers of Catholic studies, war philosophy, and Tolkien Studies alike. So much of our lives are spent in a car. Whether it's driving to work, scooting around kids to friends houses and other activities, or running to the post office, we really are stuck in a car-centric culture. But today's guest is trying to get us out of that rut, one bicycle at a time.Donna Matturro McAleer is the Executive Director of Bicycle Collective, a group of non-profit bike shops refurbishing donated bicycles and putting them into the hands of those in need, focusing on children, Newly resettled refugees, immigrants, individuals experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity and more.In this episode, they explore the broader economic, environmental, and community impacts of making bicycles accessible as a form of sustainable transportation. We'll also hear about the Bicycle Collective's programs, sustainable business model, and pandemic growth.Eccles Business Buzz is a production of the David Eccles School of Business and is produced by University FM.Show Links:Donna Matturro McAleer | LinkedInDonna Matturro McAleer | 2024 CEO of the Year - Utah BusinessBicycle CollectiveDavid Eccles School of Business (@ubusiness) • InstagramEccles Alumni Network (@ecclesalumni) • Instagram Episode Quotes:In a car-centric country where transportation poses significant barriers to economic stability, bicycles emerge as a transformative tool. [03:32] If you think about it, Frances, In Utah, in our country, we are a car-centric country. But if you think about transportation, transportation is a formidable barrier to economic mobility. Access to nearly everything associated with economic progress and upward mobility, whether that's getting to school, getting to a job, getting to a job interview, fairly priced goods and services, medical services, healthcare, depends on the ability to get from one place to another efficiently and in an affordable manner. And that's where a bike can really be a transformative tool, especially in a place like Salt Lake City and throughout this state where so many resources may be concentrated within a few miles.Choosing a bike over a car can cut your carbon footprint by 67% and transform communities[08:22] Choosing a bike over a car just once a day reduces the average person's carbon footprint from transportation admissions by 67%. So, that's just once a day. Think about if you use it as your primary form of transportation, a moderate increase in bicycling each year could save 6 to 14 million tons of carbon dioxide. So, there's huge, huge impacts that bicycling has on the individual, on the community, on the economy, and on the environment, all in a positive way. It's not a trade off of one or another. We get to experience all those things with biking.Bicycle Collective is a resource for everyone[20:16] Bicycle Collective is really for everyone. Whether you are a first-time cyclist or maybe you want to try a new discipline, but you want to get in at an affordable level. So, maybe you never tried mountain biking and you want to get a mountain bike or you want to start road riding or, hey, I've been road riding, I've been mountain biking, but I want to be a bike commuter. We are a great resource for cycling enthusiasts, first-timers.

Erin McAleer is the President and CEO of Project Bread, Massachusetts' only statewide food security organization, connecting people and communities to reliable sources of food. McAleer uses her background in health and human services and public policy to address food insecurity in Massachusetts through systemic and scalable strategies. Key Takeaways:Lived experience is critical in solving food insecurity issues and policies need to be driven by those most impacted, shifting away from the traditional top-down approach. Don't prioritize immediate payoffs, consider long-term systemic solutions, and strive to execute on both fronts.Establish a council of experts full of people with lived experience of the need that your organization aims to address. Solutions must be guided by the community that the organization serves with a process or system that ensures inclusivity and collective involvement.Shift your focus to the people that you serve. Use storytelling to raise awareness, promote donor engagement, and educate your audience about how they could serve. Eliminate the cost and stigma barriers against access to needed resources for the community you serve.Leverage your skills, experiences, and expertise to make a difference. Seek a meaningful life by striving towards your higher calling. Look into the pain points that you've experienced in your life and find a way to serve that need in the world for others. “Lived experience is the most expertise that you can provide to solve this problem.” “Solutions always come from the community.”  “The disconnect between donors and reality is that bridge that we are trying to make through storytelling.” - Erin McAleer Reach out to Erin McAleer at:Website: www.projectbread.orgLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erin-mcaleer-22b21012/Project Bread LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/project-bread/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/projectbread/Twitter: www.x.com/projectbread  Ask for and receive all you want, need and deserve without feeling rejected, ineffective, or pushy. Tony co-founded the organisation Life After Hate, which assists individuals in leaving White Supremacist movements, drawing from his own profound personal transformation. As a young man, Tony was deeply entrenched in hate groups, leading the Aryan Resistance Movement and engaging in activities that saw him confront the Supreme Court of Canada. His life took a pivotal turn with the birth of his children, leading him through a path of intense personal reflection and counseling. This journey not only transformed him but also gave him unique insights into the psychology behind hate group participation and the challenging road to reintegration into society. In “The Cure for Hate,” he shares his story, offering hope and understanding to those struggling with similar issues. His commitment to healing extends beyond his own experience; he actively contributes to community healing through talks and donations from his book. Join us for an intimate conversation with Tony McAleer, as we delve into his past, his transformative journey, and his ongoing efforts to cure hate. This episode promises to be a compelling exploration of redemption, understanding, and the power of change.

We'll also discuss his transformative realizations as a parent, the profound impact of personal growth workshops, and his eventual co-founding of Life After Hate, an organization dedicated to helping individuals exit hate groups. Tony will share insights from his book, "The Cure for Hate," and his emotional journey to Auschwitz, reflecting on confronting his past Holocaust denial. This episode is a deep dive into the human need for belonging, the psychology of extremist behavior, and the transformative power of compassion and connection. So, join us as Tony McAleer helps us understand the darkness and, more importantly, the path back to light.

Released during the trial in 2020, it's an extraordinary document of a cultural flashpoint, providing a far deeper and more troubling portrait than most media coverage did at the time. Nobody was shocked when Weinstein was slapped with a 23-year sentence, but it seems many people were when that conviction was overturned on Thursday, April 25.Not Ann and Phelim. “This is of course not any surprise at all us, and to any of you who've been listening,” McElhinney said during the “special news breaking episode” recorded yesterday, “We Were Right - Weinstein Case Collapses.” Catherine A. Christian, a former prosecutor in the Manhattan DA's office, was also unsurprised. “A number of us were expecting that it probably would be reversed if there was some sort of intellectual honesty,” she told Politico Magazine.”You don't want to make bad law for bad defendants.”Few people followed this case as closely — or produced the kind of hard-hitting journalism as Ann and Phelim. Listeners may recall Sarah's beloved holiday tradition for three years running: She listens to all 23 episodes of the podcast, which is very weird, although Ann called it “the most precious compliment I've ever had.” McElhinney and McAleer join Nancy and an awestruck Sarah to discuss “the silence of the laptops” in the courtroom, why actress Annabella Sciorra should never have been on the witness stand, the transactional nature of Hollywood relationships, and whether Weinstein will be tried again in New York. McAleer and Rosenthal-Pubul argue for an ancestral conservatism that emphasizes transcendence, family, and education, relying on the wisdom of the past and the importance of one's local community. They also discuss the importance of cultural institutions and ways to incorporate diverse intellectual traditions, such as psychoanalysis and phenomenology, into conservative thought. For a deep dive into this topic, check out the book: The Wisdom of Our Ancestors: Conservative Humanism and the Western Tradition

It was originally broadcast on the radio, during the Stars Fell on Alabama festival. LuLu's is a place renowned for fun, food and music. No doubt, many of you heard the sad news about Jimmy Buffett, Lucy's brother. Fun, food and music were a big part of his life as well. We were heartbroken to hear about Jimmy's passing on September 1st. If you've been listening to The Paul Leslie Hour you know how many people and events from the Jimmy Buffett world have been covered here. And some of you know, Paul's very first broadcasts were heard on Jimmy Buffett's Radio Margaritaville in 2003. To honor the troubadour of the tropics, we're bringing out this interview with his sister Lucy and brother-in-law Mac. You'll hear in Lucy's voice something of her brother. You'll recognize the same joyous spirit and childlike enthusiasm. Carson Forrester, a listener of The Paul Leslie Hour and a boatbuilder commented the other day on Paul's instagram. In recent years, our country has experienced deep divisions fueled by political polarization, social unrest, and economic disparities. The rise of identity politics has further exacerbated these tensions, with people retreating into their respective ideological echo chambers. It's essential to acknowledge that these divisions are not new; they have long been simmering beneath the surface, waiting for the right spark to ignite.  To honestly address these challenges, we must first recognize that our collective identity is not monolithic. America is diverse, encompassing many perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences. However, it also requires us to navigate complex issues with empathy, understanding, and a willingness to listen.  The path to reconciliation starts with open and respectful dialogue. We must create spaces where individuals from different walks of life can come together, share their stories, and truly listen to one another. This means setting aside preconceived notions, biases and approaching conversations with an open mind and even more open hearts. But how?   Today we will have that conversation by proxy, asking what it will take to change.  Our guests for these next two episodes are an Emmy award-winning television personality whom Americans invited into their homes for over 17 years. He is a decorated former naval officer, inspirational speaker, prolific author, entrepreneur, and fierce advocate for patients worldwide.   Our other guest is the author of the book, The Cure For Hate, and he is also the focus of the 2023 documentary movie, The Cure for Hate: Bearing Witness to Auschwitz.    Our guests have met before but under very different circumstances that, in many ways, reflect one axis of the division in America. Knowing them both, I created a goal to bring them back together as a sanity touchstone to show the healing of separated factions #StartsWithUS.   Our guests for the next two episodes are an Ex-Neo Nazi, now the Neo-Compassionist, Tony McAleer, and fierce veteran's advocate, host of The Montel Williams Show, Montel Williams.  Tony McAleer https://www.thecureforhatefilm.com https://www.thecureforhate.ca Social Media https://www.instagram.com/antonymcalee https://www.facebook.com/TonyJMcAleer Montel Williams https://www.montelmedia.com Social Media https://www.facebook.com/MontelWilliamsFan     https://twitter.com/montel_williams         https://www.instagram.com/montel_williams Part 1: What Does It Take to Change a Nation? 1991 When the Black Jarhead Meets the White Supremacist The Power of moving 1% to 5% of Normalizing Hate The Truth and Lies of America's Foundation Modern Torture is it the Exception, or is it The Rule? Filmmaker Peter Hutchinson's latest documentary THE CURE FOR HATE: BEARING WITNESS TO AUSCHWITZ follows Tony McAleer, a former Neo-Nazi and Holocaust denier. After spent 15 years in the white supremacist and neo-Nazi movement, starting as a skinhead before rising in the ranks into leadership, McAleer shed past life to become a founding member of the anti-hate activist group Life After Hate. positions. (the film) THE CURE FOR HATE: BEARING WITNESS TO AUSCHWITZ documents Tony's profoundly personal journey of atonement to Auschwitz/Birkenau - exploring the conditions that allowed for the rise of fascism in 1930s Europe; shedding a unique light upon how men get into, and out of, violent extremist groups; and serving as a cautionary tale for our time that underscores the dangers in allowing hate to be left unchecked. Aware and deeply ashamed of the lineage of hate he'd once promoted, Tony had long-contemplated traveling to Auschwitz in the spirit of tshuvah - to bear witness to the inconceivable ravages of the Holocaust, and deepen his personal work against the rise of extremist politics. Director Peter Hutchinson (Requiem of the American Dream) and Subject Tony McAleer join us for a conversation on the road that brought them together, the size and scope of the Auschwitz industrial killing operation, and getting to know each other.   For more go to: thecureforhatefilm.com
