We catch up with Wagga based trainer Gary Colvin who added to his metropolitan record when Cambar scored a tradesmanlike win in the TAB Highway on Nov. 30th. Gary's hoping Cambar will emulate the deeds of stable favourite Another One who won a Championship Final  in 2022 after having finished second the year before. Gary begins our podcast by talking about Cambar's two early wins at Wagga when ridden by stable apprentice Holly Durnan. He looks back on his purchase of the little colt at the Inglis Premier Sale in Melbourne. He got a second opinion from Warwick Farm trainer Greg Hickman who'd trained the colt's sire Pierata. Gary says Cambar has been a thorough professional from the day he was broken in. The trainer retained a part ownership of the horse while the remaining shares were snapped up by old friends. He says one of the quartet is a first time participant. Gary looks back on childhood days growing up with his six siblings on the family farm at Tullibigeal. He says his father was never without a horse or two on the property. He pays tribute to uncles John and Noel Colvin, both very successful jockeys. Gary says he was 17 when he joined three of his siblings in Wagga. He pleased his parents greatly when he registered for an apprenticeship in joinery. He talks of his progress in the old world trade. He talks of his passion for Australian Rules Football, and reflects on his involvement with the Wagga Tigers and the Collingully side. He plays down reports that he was a very accomplished player. Gary remembers his short stint in a coaching role. He looks back on Fred Colvin's move to Wagga and a renewal of his trainer's licence. He assisted his father for eleven years while training a small team of his own. When Fred retired in 1997, he was ready to train in his own right. Gary hasn't forgotten the mare who provided the first win of his full time training career. He acknowledges the special horses to get him up and running as a commercial trainer with special mention of Baltra and Lock the Key. The accomplished trainer takes us through the circumstances leading up to his purchase of Another One at an Inglis Classic Sale. He's never forgotten the instant he first saw the chestnut colt.  Gary talks of Another One's pedigree and the 15 strong syndicate who got together to race the horse. The trainer recalls setting the talented horse for a maiden 2YO at Wagga. He and the owners were stunned when a Randwick trained youngster from the John O'Shea yard turned up for the same race. He takes us through Another One's progression to his first tilt at the Country Championship. Gary followed a similar path the following year and the gelding again made the final at Randwick. This time he prevailed in the highly prized event.  He pays tribute to Another One's regular rider Nick Heywood who wages a fearsome battle with weight to stay in the saddle. Gary talks of Another One's Kosciuszko failure and his most recent wins in the Riverina. The trainer speaks highly of Danny Beasley who rode the horse to victories in the Canberra National Sprint and the Wodonga Cup. Danny recently joined the Wagga training ranks and is situated right next door to the Colvin stables. Gary talks of wife Karen's picture framing business in Wagga, and his willingness to lend a hand in the early days of the operation. He says his assistance was not needed.  Gary talks of daughter Gabby who's currently a highly regarded member of the Melbourne Women's AFL side. Her dad's pretty chuffed. He makes mention of sons Brodie and Matthew. One prefers the thrill of trying to back a winner- the other enjoys being around the horses. Good to catch up with yet another talented member of the country training ranks.

What is the productization of agency services, and how can it be done? Productization can be defined as solving a problem you know people have, following a similar identical process for each client. The easiest transition to productization is when it's derived from things you've already been doing for your existing clients, which doesn't change your agency's entire process. In this episode of The Agency Blueprint, I'm joined by Greg Hickman to discuss agency productization and how to design productization correctly. Greg is the Founder and CEO of AltAgency™. Over the last 4 years, Greg and his team have transformed AltAgency™ from an automation consultancy serving many well-known entrepreneurs and growth experts into one of the top coaching and training companies for agencies looking to grow and scale by packaging their expertise, installing systems for growth and leveraging automation to save time. Don't miss this episode to learn what happens when agency owners decide to productize and systemize. Key Questions: [01:05] What do you define as productization or to productize services for an agency? [08:28] What have you seen with non-productized and non-systemized agencies after they've done the work to create process? [14:37] What are your thoughts about monetizing expertise properly for agency owners? [24:56] What's your advice to an agency owner wanting to productize beyond the process-oriented aspects? What You'll Discover: [01:19] Greg describes productization as solving a problem you know people have following a similar identical process for each client. [04:10] The difference between the “done for you” and “done with you” modalities and the opportunities layered with the latter. [07:10] How to design productization to include customization and creativity to streamline processes. [08:51] Greg explains what happens when agency owners decide to productize and systemize. [15:03] How to monetize your expertise by identifying your strategic component that allows for your process. [19:03] Understanding that clients have a shelf-life and how to extend a lifetime value to them as an advantage to you. [23:17] How to clearly articulate your process to remain unique instead of selling on price. [25:16] Greg on how to productize the right way beyond the process-oriented pieces. And that's exactly what today's guest helps develop for his clients: Leverage to grow and develop their business to the level and direction they want to go. This week, welcome Greg Hickman on the show. He is an industry veteran and Founder of AltAgency, a consultancy that helps agencies, service providers, and freelancers drive growth without sacrificing their nights and weekends by packaging their expertise, installing systems for growth, and leveraging automation to save time. Greg is all about setting up systems, defining your core customer base, and productizing your offering to enable repeatable growth. What's more, he's throwing in a hot take or two on services (But you'll have to listen in to learn more!). In this episode, Greg sits down with Corey to share his philosophy to helping agency owners, breaking down the common pitfalls and challenges riddling business owners and independent consultants alike. Here's what we cover: - The evolution of Greg's company, his founder journey, and how the offering has shifted over time. - The concept of affinity in verticalized businesses and why specialization wins. - Greg's take on customized offering versus productized services. - Scaling through monetizing expertise, not just headcount. Here are some actionable key takeaways for agency founders: - Scaling isn't about arriving at a destination, it's about having a continuum where you have room for growth. - You need to have affinity with the vertical you're serving; empathy builds success. - Starting out, try different things to find your sweet spot, but then narrow it down. - Productizing services creates efficiencies, and efficiencies grow businesses. Greg Hickman is the Founder and CEO of AltAgency, which helps agency owners, freelancers, and service providers grow and scale without working nights or weekends. He has worked with hundreds of entrepreneurs, including John Lee Dumas, Betty Rockers, and Nerd Fitness. As a serial entrepreneur, Greg is also the Founder and CEO of System.ly, where he helps online business owners create reliable marketing systems to maximize profits for products and services. In this episode: The traditional agency structure involves owners serving as full-service providers to each client. Yet this model decreases client value, creates operational inefficiencies, and places undue pressure on owners. How can you remodel your agency to generate value for clients and scale effectively? As an advocate for an alternative agency framework, agency growth expert Greg Hickman diversifies revenue systems to monetize and scale services. This process involves identifying your core competencies and the specific outcome for each service. However, scaling beyond $3 million solely by offering traditional services is not practical since they must be customized for each client's unique needs. Additionally, some clients may not benefit from them, so Greg recommends developing a membership community to offer mastermind courses in your area of expertise. By systemizing your offerings, you can establish multiple income streams to scale. In this episode of Systems Simplified, Adi Klevit welcomes Greg Hickman, the Owner and Founder of AltAgency, for a discussion about diversifying revenue streams through an alternative business structure. He shares the barriers to transforming agency growth, the updated systems for scaling, and the benefits of documenting processes.

Get ready to discover the concept of the "Alt Agencies" - where specialization and specific outcomes for niche clients are favored over the traditional agency model. Our Guest Greg Hickman shares his journey on how to deliver a repeatable sales and onboarding process. The conversation touched insightful topics like: Power of productizing services [04:56]Understanding the concept of "productizing" services, which involves packaging a repeatable service with fixed problem-solving, turnaround time, and price. Discover the benefits of standardizing packages and systemizing processes to scale a business effectively.Importance of specializing and finding a niche [06:50]Find out the challenges and benefits of specializing in a specific area, what realization can working nights and weekends bring you and ultimately understanding how to divorce your time from your income.Role of webinar funnels in scaling a business [08:26]How focusing on webinar funnels and becoming experts in that area changed the game for Greg's agency and what are some common plateaus experienced by many service providers.Evolving agency model and additional revenue streams [15:58]Exploring the term of “Alt Agency” and discussing the changing landscape of agency models, such as tech-enabled, strategy-focused, or platform discipline-focused agencies. Key Quotes: Unique Skills: “If you can position yourself as the engine builder, you can charge a premium. You're more valued because you know how to do this unique thing. And that is kind of how I see how we were able to make the shift to only working on the stuff that we enjoyed. And that was, I think, the true value to the client.” [12:53] Understanding Nuances:: ”Nobody understands that a person who's at 3K a month and a million a year could actually be experiencing the exact same thing and need almost the exact same solution. But there's still these little nuanced differences. It's fascinating to me. We pick back up mid-conversation with Greg Hickman on this episode of The Friday Habit. He is talking about how agencies and businesses that function mostly in the full-service space spend too much time and energy thinking that the grass is greener on the DIY side of things, and vice versa. Ultimately, your best bet is to find a sweet spot right in the middle and then branch out in either direction to have multiple income streams and a variety of clients. He describes this as a ladder with one-to-one higher-cost product offerings at the top and several rungs down you get to one-to-many self-service product offerings. Greg encourages businesses to have 1-3 product offerings and to never have more product offerings than you have employees. Here are a few questions Greg recommends you ask yourself about your business: What does this market need? What do I need? What am I designing this for? What are my goals? Is it worth it? At the end of the episode, Greg describes his top 3 action items for listeners: Document your current process and focus on doing what you are good at Write out your 3-5 year goals and reverse-engineer your life to get there Find a mentor to shorten your learning curve Connect with Greg:greg@altagency.com https://altagency.com/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIMW0w-FD3yXlz3MR0aAEqAConnect with us:https://www.thefridayhabit.com/thefridayhabit@knapsackcreative.com https://www.instagram.com/benjaminmanleyhttp://www.benjaminmanley.com/https://www.brandvivamedia.com/https://www.facebook.com/Marklab2https://www.linkedin.com/in/marklab2/

Our guest on this episode of The Friday Habit is Greg Hickman, founder of Alt Agency. Greg graduated from a small liberal arts college and earned a business management degree, then joined one of his classmates at a big brand agency as a project manager. Working with all departments at the agency really helped give him a good understanding of the design process and working with clients. Before long, he decided to go out on his own to help personal brands sell their courses and develop sales funnels, eventually providing full-service automation. This experience helped him realize that monthly recurring revenues were not scalable or sustainable for his team and he found himself in a cycle of needing more help to take on new clients but not being able to afford to hire anyone new. As he began to process how he might be able to shift his model, he focused on the 80/20 rule and decided to start with productizing his services and then introduce retainers later in the sales process. They also flipped the script on client work, waiting until the client created the required content before having his team start their portion of the project to reduce unnecessary backups waiting on the client. This became the Foundations flagship program offered by Alt Agency, teaching people that they have to specialize before they can productize. Businesses that successfully productize market to a specific problem and articulate to consumers how they can solve that problem. They also systematize all parts of the funnel, from lead generation to onboarding to communication to billing. Come back next week for the second half of Mark and Ben's conversation with Greg!Connect with Greg:https://altagency.com/ Connect with us:https://www.thefridayhabit.com/thefridayhabit@knapsackcreative.com https://www.instagram.com/benjaminmanleyhttp://www.benjaminmanley.com/https://www.brandvivamedia.com/https://www.facebook.com/Marklab2https://www.linkedin.com/in/marklab2/

On this episode of Rhodes to Success, I interview Greg Hickman who is an entrepreneur, mobile marketing consultant, and creator of the Mobile Mixed podcast. If you want to know how to build your email list, increase webinar conversion, and drive sales with text messaging then this is an absolute must listen!   Main Questions Asked: -       Why is SMS marketing so powerful for podcasters? -       How does SMS marketing work, and how do you get people to opt in? -       What is your take on high downloads versus people who listen to every episode? -       What should lead magnets be? -       What are examples that will get people to opt in? -       Talk about your video training series and all the different ways you are putting out content. -       What is your business relationships philosophy?   Key Lessons Learned: -       If you are a podcaster and don't blog, there is little reason for listeners to visit your site. -       Connect with listeners where they are (on their mobile device). -       Podcasts are great for authority, getting yourself on other shows, and creating relationships with people, but blog posts, such as tutorials, are what gets shared. -       It is much more difficult to create a viral podcast episode, as sharing is not as easy as blog content.   Two Types of Shows: -       1) Passive listeners - E.g 20,000 passive listeners who are not going to show notes or opting in -       2) Active listeners – E.g 500 active listeners who download every episode and offer a high conversion rate   SMS Marketing: -       65% of podcasts are listened to on a smart phone. -       If you can't get people to your show notes, then the odds of getting someone on your email list is low. -       Listening to a podcast is something people do while they are doing other things. -       The odds of people listening to your podcast from in front of their computer are low. -       You need a solid call to action and reason for listeners to participate, such as registering for a webinar, free content, or event registration. -       Text message marketing software is available, such as Call Loop. -       Only a few software platforms have two-way interaction that allows you to capture email addresses. -       Example – Podcaster announces “text ‘lead pages' to 38470.” The listener will receive a bounce back text “to confirm your registration, reply with your email address.” -       Once you have the email address, the listener is on your list and you can add to platforms, such as Mailchimp or Infusionsoft. -       By offering this text opt-in option, you are giving the people who want to take action the ability to join your email list no matter where they are listening. -       Look at SMS marketing as a new opportunity to capture people that might be audio-only listeners by enabling text call to action.   Downloads Versus Loyal Listeners: -       As a podcaster, you have to ask yourself “what is my goal?” -       Is the goal to get a high number of downloads in order to gain sponsorship, or is the goal to use the podcast as a lead generation tool? -       Most podcasters aren't going to make a living from sponsorship so it is best to use the podcast as a lead generation tool. -       Focus on repeat listeners and people who are going to join your list.   Lead Magnets & Content Upgrades: -       Lead Magnets - webinars and free courses work well, and is something that provides the listener a lot of value. -       Content upgrades – creating a unique piece of content that is pulled from each episode, e.g screenshots, checklist, or process flows. -       Content upgrades are something you will want to download, and is heavily promoted. This helps increase your opt-in and conversion rate.   -       Most podcasters and bloggers constantly promote the same lead magnet; however, if someone isn't interested, then they will never opt in. -       By having unique lead magnets for every piece of content, you are giving yourself an opportunity for people to opt in.   Business Relationships: -       As long as you put yourself out there, engage with people, and try to deliver value, then it will come back to you. -       Often, you may not find people in your area who are also entrepreneurs, so you may want to create opportunities to find them. -       Meeting face-to-face is important. Going to conferences and live events is a great way to engage. -       Once you create relationships with people, you need to actively stay in touch and continue to deliver value.   Subscribe to the show in iTunes or Stitcher Radio!   The music in today's episode was written by The Danger Os and produced by Nick Palmer.
