Final Fantasy 13 will always be a divisive game. From its linear story telling and more action based yet less player involved battle system, Final Fantasy 13 split audiences harshly. Some people love it, some people despise it. But now with a decade of time passing, its time to go back and look at the one of the most controversial games in RPG history. Final Fantasy XIII is widely regarded as the bloated hallway simulator, forgotten between its more competent older and younger siblings. This week, Mike and Alex challenge this notion and explain why Final Fantasy XIII is the JRPG we wanted and forgot we already had. A special focus on the lack of mp guage (something we discussed last week), uncompromising linearity, the hybridization of real-time and turn based elements, Also including a brief treatment of the weird and awe-inspiring universe.

Show notes and gallery: http://videogamegrooves.com/2020/11/25/episode-72-manawave-w-f-music-from-final-fantasy-13 It's time to talk turkey about video game music on vinyl record, and we're going to start with the drunken uncle at the gathering: lo-fi hip-hop.  We're joined by Caleb Denney, formerly of Debug Records but newly of Channel 3 Records, to talk about some great and noteworthy feature picks!  We begin with the cross-label release of Manawave, an ostensibly low (but not-low) fi (but not-fi) hip (but not-hip) hop (but not-hop) adaptation of Secret of Mana. We admire its aspirations and discuss the album's flowing intentionality and mood, as well as the improbable path to approval by Mana's original composer, Hiroki Kikuta and the album art by Hiroo Isono. We continue to Anthony's pick of W/F Music from Final Fantasy XIII, and champion the unusual divergence the divisive game's music takes from the rest of the canon. A tiny bit of soapboxing and gushing later, and we ponder Square-Enix's vinyl trajectory toward mediocrity from this serendipitously wonderful release. We take care of the news and releases, as always, keeping you informed just in time for those spendy, spendy holidays. And for our final segment, we decide to deeply interrogate the idea of "exceptional" music in the game music vinyl space. What qualifies as exceptional? Are we getting exceptional releases? Do we deserve them? What does the future hold? Is Mass Effect's music really that good? Listen and find out! May is here, E3 is right around the corner, and Final Fantasy Union is back again to talk all things Final Fantasy. Darryl sits down with Lauren and Spencer and they get into the nitty gritty. However, even though E3 is a mere couple of weeks away, the gang uses this episode to do something special. They spend a great deal of time talking about their thoughts, likes and dislikes about Final Fantasy 13-2. Nothing in the game is off limits, so this is your official SPOILER WARNING! First off are the characters. The trio spends a great deal of time talking about the three primary characters of Serah, Noel, and Caius while using your comments to help them guide the discussion. They then spend time talking about most of the secondary characters; which ones worked and which ones didn't. Since this is a sequel, they were able to compare the cast in 13-2 to the original 13. Next up, the story and whether it worked or not with the Historia Crux, the different time periods, and time travel. That moved them seamlessly into talking about the gameplay. While it is similar to 13, they had plenty of changes to talk about such the party monster leveling system and limit breaks, the battle engagements, and the level system found in the crystarium. Which parts were better or worse than the original. And then, the music. Each host has their own pick that they talk about while also talking about the soundtrack as a whole! Reactions and preferences are definitely mixed so listen in to hear how! To round out the episode, you'll get a nice remix of a piece from 13-2 that you'll enjoy! Be sure to stay tuned for new FF developments that are expected to come over the next few weeks!

As we wind things down for the year, we come to our final FFU until 2012. However, that doesn't mean that we’ve skimped on the show! Darryl, Lauren and Colin spend a copious amount of time on Final Fantasy! Things start off with Colin giving his run down of the event he got to go to for 13-2! And then, they tackle the waterfall of news including info for 13-2, localization of Type-0, and how Square-Enix vows to shorten their development timeline for all new games. After a massive rant/tangent, they move into the Burning Question which is “When do you think we’ll see Versus 13?” The answers are what you probably expect :). And the gang doesn’t ignore you or your questions and in this final episode, we have two great ones! The trio tackles their feelings on FF15 being an action RPG and whether or not they would want to be able to control the appearance of the main character in a FF title. To wrap up the show and the year, enjoy a remix of the FF prelude! It’s been an amazing year at FFU, and next year is shaping up to be truly phenomenal. We’ll see you soon!
