Join Braden, Chris, and Adam as they discuss Hironobu Sakaguchi's The Last Story, including a brief recollection of Project Rainfall and what it was like to talk about JRPGs on the internet approximately 14 years ago. It's not all horror stories though, as they also cover the game's unique approach to combat, its non-unique approach to storytelling, and why basically no one talked about it after release (hint: it's Xenoblade's fault.) Our hosts found a game they actually enjoyed for once, which is good since the next game they're playing is going to be an absolute nightmare.  Please consider donating to the National Network of Abortion Funds: abortionfunds.org/donate If you've been enjoying the podcast, please consider supporting us at https://www.patreon.com/DeepListens If you like our new art and want to commission some of your own, reach out to Tyler at tylerorbin.net

Which intros propel these games to legendary status, and which ones would the games be better off without? We discuss the qualities at the beginning of each game and rank them in order, from best to worst. It turns out, Final Fantasies all have pretty great intros, so even the least of these games here on this list is still probably above average. Lost Odyssey, by Mistwalker and feelplus, is almost legendary at this point. A darker, sadder RPG by Final Fantasy series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, with a moody yet eclectic soundtrack by Final Fantasy series composer Nobuo Uematsu and short stories interspersed throughout by famed Japanese author Kiyoshi Shigematsu, there is pedigree and talent behind the game, and perhaps most crucially- you probably can't buy it, unless you own an Xbox console. Situations like this tend to lead to inflation of a game's merits, not to mention all of the "this is the real Final Fantasy 13" memes out there. So does Lost Odyssey live up to its mythical reputation? Tune in to find out! Guest Info: Ryan Batie of Lightning Strikes Thrice, a JRPG play along podcast.

Nintendo and Microsoft both had rock-solid presentations during this faux-E3 time of year, and it has some PlayStation fans on their back foot. Why does it seem like Sony is dragging its feet when its competitors are going full steam ahead? Isn't there anything to say? And while many (including some of us on this show) make the argument that its lack of communication doesn't particularly matter in the long run -- PlayStation 5 is doing great as-is -- the consternation is nonetheless growing in the vacuum of silence. Plus: Dragon Quest III HD-2D and a Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Collection are both en route to PS5, as is Hironobu Sakaguchi's Fantasian, while the seventh China Hero Game, Evotinction, is slated for release later this year, Shovel Knight prepares his triumphant return, Bluepoint reconfirms it's working on an original title, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Did developer Game Science really get shaken-down for $7 million by a DEI consultancy? Will Hollow Knight: Silksong ever actually come out, or is it a myth? Whatever happened to the reconstituted Telltale Games? Has Colin gained full royal status, complete with new honorary titles? Square-Enix has decided that they want to make money again. They're publishing Fantasian: Neo Dimension by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy. It looks like a throwback to PS1-era Final Fantasy games. This is after offloading money-hemorrhaging Crystal Dynamics, sacking a bunch of Western game developers, and dropping PlayStation exclusivity. Sections played: First few battles Issues covered: finals fantasies, 1997 in games, testing various games, placing us in that time, a surprising departure in the series, TTRPGs and being "like chess," translating a genre to the PS1, closer combat/smaller spaces, opacity, not remembering the game well, the Zodiac, some other series, a niche genre, limited input options and menus, Ivalice and medieval setting, a deeper simulated system than FF combat generally has, translating well to the genre, the opening cinematics, preferring alignment of story with general engine use, developing technology to stream video, in-game stuff holding up better, getting the leverage from sprites, the diorama look, merging gameplay with non-interactive content, pre-rendered rewards, terrain rendering and spinning the camera, the close-in space vs larger areas and fog of war, elevation and abilities, map differentiation for visuals and challenge, the game over screen, modern engagement. My guest today is a Japanese video-game director, producer, and executive officer of Square-Enix. Born in 1966 in Fussa City in the suburbs of Tokyo, he studied filmmaking at Nihon University. After graduating, he was working at an animation studio when he first played Final Fantasy on the Famicom, and immediately saw the dramatic potential of the video game medium. Despite having no technical skills, he joined Square in 1990, to work as an “event planner”, involved in level design for Seiken Densetsu (Final Fantasy Adventure) for the Game Boy. Four years later he directed Final Fantasy VI, a game widely considered a classic. A protégée of the company's founder, Hironobu Sakaguchi, my guest subsequently worked on many of the company's best-loved titles, and now serves as Brand Manager for the Final Fantasy series. “My father would complain that he had no idea what was going on when I played RPGs at home after school,” he once told me. “This made me want to make games that those watching the screen beside the player might also find interesting.”  Be attitude for gains. https://plus.acast.com/s/my-perfect-console. Check this page to see all of the released specials. Here's a sample of the full show notes - make sure to click through and check them out.Content WarningPlease listen responsibly.Show NotesIn this "Goes to the Movies" episode, we wanted to tackle a movie which isn't necessarily based on an actual game, per se - but keep a look out for Jay's interpretation, very soon - so we tackled Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. As with our House of the Dead episode - do check that out, if you want to hear the boys talking smack about an Uwe Boll movie - we decided to change up the format of our "goes to the movies" episodes. Instead of working through the plot, we decided that it would be much more fun to focus on a handful of scenes from the movie. This serves the double purpose of: Simplifying our episodes, and getting to the gags quicker Not having to discuss the plot which this movie doesn't have Just before we started recording though, Chief uttered the following famous last words:I'm a pro at this now, I've done that many episodes that I could probably do this myself.- ChiefWith that said, we jumped to jump straight into a description of this movie...Basic Info on the MovieJay dropped some key facts on this movie before we could get to our discussion on it:This is a movie that was released in 2001... it is THE reason why a whole bunch of Square-Enix games that came out after that were PlayStation exclusives for a long time... it is known as the 4th biggest box-office bombs of all time... it cost (in 2022 dollars) $190 MILLION to make, and almost drove Square out of business... and only ever made $85 million back, which is less than half of it's budget.- JayInterestingly, the story that this movie was based on - the script was originally called Gaia - was written during the final few days of working on Final Fantasy VII, and was written by Hironobu Sakaguchi shortly after his mother passed away. It was then re-written by Al Reinert (co-writer of Apollo 13) & Jeff Vintar (writer of I, Robot), and was combined with three years of RnD in Hawaii to create the final movie. It's also important to remember that the fallout of this movie lead to the merger between Square and Enix almost being canned. Both companies were in pretty dire straits - even with the rousing success of both Final Fantasy VII and VIII - and Sony had to step in to buy a (reported) 20% stake in Square to keep the merger alive (as Enix wanted to pull out). And this is why a large number of Square-Enix games of the early 2000s were Playstation exclusives.Just think about that for a second: The Spirits Within was that expensive and that much of a flop that it undid all of the profits from both Final Fantasy VII and VIII.Initial ThoughtsEach of the boys agreed that the movie is beautiful to look at, especially for it's time.I don't think I'd willingly go back and watch it again, though.- ChiefBefore we got into the movie proper, Jay asked:With 0 being the worst and 10 being the best, how would you rate this film as a film? Imagine that it's an IGN score though: it doesn't mean anything- Jay Chief: 5 Squidge: Numberwang (or a 7) Jay: unrated Chief had this to say about his score:What I mean is it's a middling film. The plot is serviceable, if a little uninteresting and uninspired. It makes sense, and the animation is good... but one thing I will say about the sound, though. You know when they're firing the weapons? It always feels under-powered.- ChiefSquidge had this to say about his score:I've seen some good CGI movies, and I've seen some $h!t. And so many years later, it holds up... some of the best parts of the movie are Steve Buschemi... the pacing is way too fast, then way too slow.- SquidgeAnd the boys all agree that the movie would have made a great limited series or a game. In fact, they all agree that it plays out very much like a video game. You could probably make [this into] a tactical shooter, survival horror game.- JayHad Netflix been a streaming service back in the tail end of the 90s - rather than just a DVD rental service - they would have bitten Sakaguchi's hand off to make it.It's just done too quick, isn't it? There's good stuff in there, but it's so rushed over that by the time you get to it, you think "ugh, well I've seen that now."- ChiefFull Show NotesMake sure to check out the full show notes for more discussion on the points we raise, some extra meta-analysis, some out-of-context screen grabs from the movie, and some links to related things. Are you a fan of the Final Fantasy games? Have you seen this movie before? If so, what did you think to it? Would you fling it into a tree? If not, are you likely to watch it now?psst. we've actually done a bunch of these "goes to the movies" episodes. Hironobu Sakaguchi, the man who made Final Fantasy, decided he wanted to create a CGI studio and make a final fantasy movie. In the early 2000s, when Final Fantasy VII was one of the best games of the last decade and the JPRG franchise was becoming a massive cultural hit they decided to make a "Final Fantasy" movie with zero Final Fantasy references! This movie ain't great folks! Where did we rank it? Find out on the podcast or check the complete rankings (linked here).
