One more run right?—Just one more go at it, and this time, things will be different. That’s the allure of the Roguelike genre of video games. It isn’t just one thing to jam through a level filled with beasties and hazards, you also have to improvise your approach with whatever power-ups or drawbacks you’re given, at least long enough to make it to the next area. What was once a hardcore spin on action games has gradually permeated several other genres like Shooters, Metroidvanias, and hell, even Dating Simulators—it’s grown to a point where we’re seeing enough games lightly dabble with the formula to spawn its own subgenre, Rougelite. Realizing just how many games we’ve played under this banner, with Hades, Absolum, Dead Cell, Returnal, and several more, we figured it was high time we took a more earnest look at the category of gameplay, and try to see what makes it tick, and whether or not it’s officially reach the mainstream! Bonus Episode #69 of BGMania: A Video Game Music Podcast. Today on the show, Bryan reviews Saros, the latest PlayStation 5 exclusive now available from Housemarque, the Finnish studio behind Returnal. Set on the hostile, shape-shifting planet Carcosa under an ominous and ever-present eclipse, the game follows Arjun Devraj, a Soltari Enforcer sent to investigate a lost off-world colony who arrives with his own deeply personal reasons for being there. This Musical Review covers the fast-paced combat loop and roguelite progression systems built around Carcosa's eclipse cycles, the game's striking environmental design and cinematic presentation, the multi-phase Overlord boss encounters that rank among the best the genre has to offer, and an honest look at the story's ambitious but uneven narrative and the emotional distance created by its complicated lead character. The episode also dedicates a full segment to the original score, how the dark, atmospheric, and cinematically driven music supports the tension and isolation of Carcosa at every turn, and what it contributes to moments where the writing alone doesn't quite carry the weight. Email the show at bgmaniapodcast@gmail.com with requests for upcoming episodes, questions, feedback, comments, concerns, or any other thoughts you'd like to share!

In today's Daily Fix:Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic could still be years away from release, but that hasn't stopped the internet from speculating how long the game will be. Director Casey Hudson is aware that many gamers don't want a 300-hour experience, and hinted that it will be in line with his work on the Mass Effect games. He also said that he typically doesn't work on games for more than 4 years, if that's any indication of when we'll see more of FOTOR. In other news, the recent Silent Hill games may be a turning point for the franchise, with both the Silent Hill 2 remake and Silent Hill f selling well. On the flipside, Sony's Saros isn't quite matching spiritual predecessor Returnal's sales, although the two games released under different circumstances. This week, the internet did what it always does: took something good, something that clearly resonated with real people, and turned it into a battlefield. We're talking about Mixtape — the new game from Beethoven & Dinosaur and Annapurna — and why the so-called "controversy" surrounding it tells you more about gaming culture than it does about the actual game.Because let's be honest: a 2-to-3 hour game with a 95 Metascore on Xbox, thousands of positive Steam reviews, and music from Devo, Joy Division, and the Smashing Pumpkins doesn't NEED the internet's permission to be good. But here we are. We're going to talk about why these faux controversies keep popping up, what they say about who gaming makes room for, and why some people just cannot stand it when a game dares to be an emotional experience without a fail state. Then we get into Saros — Housemarque's spiritual successor to Returnal — and yeah, we have THOUGHTS. Arjun Devraj, Rahul Kohli going absolutely OFF in this performance, cosmic horror on planet Carcosa, and a roguelite loop that somehow got MORE accessible without losing the teeth that made Returnal special. Is it better than Returnal? That's a conversation we need to have.We also sat down with Directive 8020 — the newest entry in Supermassive's Dark Pictures Anthology — which takes the series to space and has y'all fighting alien mimics in the void. Alien meets The Thing in video game form? The story and the Turning Points mechanic are genuinely doing something. The stealth sections though… we'll talk about it.And to close it out: Double Fine — Tim Schafer's legendary studio, makers of Psychonauts and the recently released Kiln — has filed a petition to unionize with the CWA. 42 workers. Microsoft taking a neutral stance. This is big, and it's part of a larger wave rolling through the industry. Workers deserve protection, and this moment matters. We're gonna break it all down.Let's get into it.Twitter/X — https://twitter.com/spawnonmeInstagram — https://instagram.com/spawnonmeYouTube — https://youtube.com/@spawnonmeTwitch — https://twitch.tv/spawnonmeSpotify — https://open.spotify.com/show/spawnonmeApple Podcasts — https://podcasts.apple.com/spawnonme

PlayStation had one of their two major releases drop in Housemarque's Saros, and Sean's been playing it, and he has some thoughts. What does Sean think of the game, even though he didn't play their other title, Returnal? Should gamers who aren't fans of Roguelikes try it out? Is it a Game of the Year contender? Also, Sean has thoughts on some other games he's been playing this week, too, such as the newly released indies Motorslice, Wax Heads, and Dead as Disco, along with a game that released last week in Soul Quest as well. Marc played a lot of Diablo IV: Lord of Hatred Expansion and checked out Forbidden Solitaire. Plus, Asha Sharma does away with Copilot, Gamestop wants to buy Ebay, Sony gives an answer on the DRM check-in, and it's good news, there's an Atomfall TV Series in development, Forza Horizon 6 has gone gold, and more! Hello one and all, and welcome back to another episode of Trophy Talk. On this month's episode Colin is joined by Kevin Garaventa and Will AKA Sqweezy from down under! After what has been a difficult week personally for both Colin and Will, the prospect of gathering around the proverbial hearth and talking about trophies and video games was a much needed reprieve, and one the boys were all too happy to take advantage of. We start off the episode by looking forward and backward at what recent episodes have hit the network, and what is to come. Kevin is very hot indeed on Metal Eden and by the time this episode releases, he will already be recording his thoughts on the game for May's PS Plus Game Club. Colin is also excited after a pretty mid experience with Tormented Souls to get to something more light hearted and fun in Luigi's Mansion 2 for May's Surviving the Horror, and Will is looking forward to his future streaming and YouTube videos on his own channel. After introductions the crew discusses their favorite trophies earned in the last month, what we've been playing, answers Patron write ins and also gives our customary Platinum Shout Outs. The bulk of our discussion here centers around what game we would erase from history if we could, and how we think Marathon is performing now that it's been in the wild for a few months time. If Steam charts are any indication, Marathon has roughly 1/3rd the daily active user base of Helldivers 2 which came out 2 years ago at this point. Is the small but hardcore community enough for the game to find continued success? Lastly the team gives some initial thoughts and a gut check on Saros, the newest console exclusive from Housemarque and a spiritual successor to Returnal. We hope you enjoy, and thank you for listening!

Hosted on Acast. In the world of PlayStation, this past week was one of mystery. For instance, the director of Uncharted: The Lost Legacy seems to be rather blatantly teasing a new Uncharted game on Instagram. But is he actually? Meanwhile, the promise of PlayStation on PC seems to have gone totally up in smoke, with the quiet removal of related iconography from the PSN. Could it be a sign of things to come? Plus, Sony's aggressive new position on the PlayStation Store continues to bear fruit, as even more games are deleted and unpublished that never belonged there to begin with. Are we finally getting the storefront we deserve? Other news this week includes intrigue surrounding an interview with Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki, changes incoming for PS5's UI, potential teases for remakes or remasters of Persona 1 and 2, the wet fart that was the Tales series' 30th anniversary, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Do you have to play the original Resident Evil trilogy on PSone to be a "real" fan, or do the remakes suffice? It's another week of bad news for PlayStation, as PlayStation 5 -- as well as PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal -- are getting another fresh round of global price increases. While every previous gaming generation got progressively cheaper over time, our current gen is becoming substantially more expensive, and things are clearly starting to get to a breaking point. There's much to say. Also, more bad news: Newly-minted first party shooter studio Dark Outlaw Games has been unceremoniously shuttered after only a year. Such a move speaks yet again to the uneven leadership, tastemaking ability, and decision making at the top of PlayStation Studios, and begs the question how much bloodletting we need to see before anyone takes responsibility. If this sort of thing doesn't fall on Hermen Hulst's shoulders (an idea which doesn't really make any sense in and of itself), then who or what is responsible, and when will the poor stewardship of the brand's own games and studios finally cease? Plus: PlayStation cuts down on its years-long mobile gaming investments and initiatives, Sly 4 studio Sanzaru at one time readied a pitch for a Jak & Daxter remake, we nearly got a Breaking Bad game on PSVR, Epic Games lays off 1,000 employees, Pearl Abyss owns its AI mistakes in Crimson Desert, Microsoft Flight Simulator on PS5 gets PSVR2 support, Marathon sells a purported (and somewhat soft) 1.2 million copies, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! With Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth courting older gamers on average, is Final Fantasy officially finished with the younger generations? Are platform holders and publishers intentionally underpublishing physical copies of games to drive customers to digital storefronts? Do we believe the incessant rumors that Witcher 3 will get an expansion more than a decade after it first launched? Could Colin be the undisputed typing champion of Last Stand Media?
