A, B, C, D, FF3 / Feels like a mid-rank to meVery few podcast, article, or video topics on the internet get folks more enthusiastic or more up in arms than tiers, lists, or a combination thereof. On today's emotional episode of Retro Encounter, four panelists play a fantasy-draft style game to place the main-series Final Fantasy games (plus FF Tactics) into five tiers. What quintet of RPGs land in the coveted S tier? Which panelists skipped the PS3 and PS4 entries in the series? Listen to find out! Prepare to feel feelings! We're talking a very classic game today, one that stands tall over a lot of games that we care about on this show. This one broke a lot of ground and old heads will think fondly of it forever. Do millennials like it though? If so, how much? Today we speak for an entire generation of game playin' individuals. In this episode Adam is joined by Chris Coplien from the Retro Hangover podcast to chat about the first 3 Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters. A lot of waffling on about the Final Fantasy franchise in general but a fun conversation none-the-less!
While Final Fantasy was already a Japanese phenomenon, things here in the states were slower to gather steam. FF4 did well in stores, but nowhere near the numbers overseas. So, what to do with Final Fantasy 5? Release this complex, job heavy dungeon crawler to a market not ready for it or maybe soften the blow. Just a bit. That lighter game became Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, a stripped down version of the Final Fantasy formula made accessible to everyone. By combining the bare bones of an RPG with the kinetic fun of platforming, this oft maligned game remains a fascinating artifact, if nothing else.
As we put a bow on our virtual round table regarding Final Fantasy 4, there's still so much to discuss. In this, the third and final installment on FF4, we take a shotgun approach to the stories by sharing - well - all the things we didn't on the previous episodes. We talk themes, story, logos, sound effects, and one particularly nasty wall in this omnibus episode. It's the episode you've all been waiting for! FF4 has never been more relevant and we're delighted to welcome a guest that couldn't be better suited to the subject; FF loremaster, archivist, and all-round wonderful guy, Anonymoose. We talk all things Zero, the moon, and masked men with plans to move a whole lot of undead souls from one plane to another. This is an absolute must-listen for all FF4 fans or for those of you who might want a bit more insight into what FF4 is bringing to the current FF landscape. Spoiler Level: Yellow It would help to be caught up but we talk more about the game's influences and inspirations rather than actual plot detail.

Kathy ate them right up. She wasted no time mocking Rinna's ridiculous social media tactics. She scoffed at the notion that anyone would believe Erika's word over hers. "I have a lot more credibility than you do." Then she left Rinna with her jaw agape and no comeback in sight. Not nearly enough time was spent talking about the way Jax was treated, not only by Erika but by Kyle and Dorit in the aftermath. But Garcelle still managed to show the FF4 that she has their number, but she CHOOSES to take it easy on them. Pia and I are happy that this season is finally over, but we are also a bit sad that we don't get to meet in our turbans every Thursday morning and recap the show for you all! Welcome to Episode 213 of Broadcast Geeks! On this podcast we discuss all things pop culture provided that our DVR's have space and our streaming accounts are paid up. This week, the Geeks (Mitch and Matt Orrin) are virtually together to discuss all things geek. M&M...Mitch and Matt Orrin with a hockey heavy episode. We talked a bunch about the new Mighty Ducks: Game Changers show which, oddly enough, features Might Ducks alums helping train a different team AGAINST THE NEW DUCKS!! Sounds pretty crazy, though Mitch gives it the seal of approval. It led us to talk about hockey movies and how it is hard to name a bad one. Whats your favorite hockey movie? Prior to that, we talked about the upcoming Marvel phases and how they could contain characters we desire to see, such as Doom. We know Namor is rumored to show up in Black Panther, maybe the FF4 is close behind. We also got philosophical regarding characters and if they are truly villains, such as Zemo. Is he truly a villain, even though he believes in his heart that what he does is just and right. He doesn't want any person to have super soldier serum because of the havoc they could unleash on the world if it were abused. Is that so wrong? You can send your feedback and show topic ideas to broadcastgeeks@gmail.com. Follow us on Twitter @broadcastgeeks and on Instagram @broadcast_geeks. It's time for the last mailbag episode of 2019 (or, looking at the release date, the first of 2020). Kriss and Dpalm go through listener emails and hot topics for November and December. The big thing? Star Wars. Despite the divisive opinions on The Rise of Skywalker, it's a great time to be a Star Wars fan. Between the comics, movies, animated shows and streaming Disney+ shows, it's a great time. We also talk trailers (Wonder Woman 1984 and Black Widow) and wonder if WB is making the same marketing mistakes with Birds of Prey that it did with Wonder Woman. Topics: Emails Why is Star Wars so divisive these days? JR Smith proves shooters gonna shoot Black Panther 2 rumors: Could the FF4 be introduced in BP 2? News Wonder Woman 1984 Trailer Is WB slacking on the Birds of Prey marketing like they did Wonder Woman?
With the news that the Fantastic Four and X-Men will be folded in to the MCU in the near future we start by looking at who we would like to play The FF4 for Marvel Studios
Disregard the previous episode from last week. Disney has bought a huge chunk of assets from 20th Century Fox and some good news has come out of it.
I'll be reviewing the "Avengers: Infinity War" trailer and I'll be discussing Disney's potential deal with 20th Century Fox.
An unloved sequel to a beloved game makes for some rough play, as the FF4 formula wears out its welcome. While Takashi Tokita was working to update Final Fantasy IV for the Nintendo DS, he felt a longing to return to the Blue Planet and revisit the story of Cecil and the gang. What resulted was a strange plan: to release a sequel to an almost 20 year old game in episodic installments on Japanese mobile phones. By the time it arrived in America, nobody quite knew what to make of it, and neither do we.

Hi there, we have some news for you about the future of Watch Out for Fireballs! and Bonfireside Chat. We think it’s pretty exciting. The short version of it is that Bonfireside Chat is ending in August, and will be replaced with more frequent episodes of Watch Out for Fireballs!. The long version can be found below. We’ve got a lot of stuff to talk about, and we want to hear what you think. So we’ve set up a survey to gather your input. And we’re giving away three (3) $20 Steam gift cards to some randomly drawn people from the respondents. Please read everything here before you complete the survey, if you could. Here’s a link to the survey: https://duckfeed.typeform.com/to/LDPTnY Table of Contents Bonfireside Chat is Ending How is Bonfireside Chat going to end? What’s Replacing Bonfireside Chat? Watch Out for Fireballs! is Going Weekly WOFF! Will Change Schedules in August What’s Happening to the Crystal Chronicles? What’s Happening to Other Shows on the Network? How is the Patreon Changing? Early Release is getting better. We’re changing the Slack access tier. What are some open questions? We’re holding a survey. Timeline of Changes Not all of this is happening immediately. Here’s a brief timeline so you can know what takes effect when. January: WOFF! expands beyond retro games. May: Brayton replaces Gary on Check It Out, Comrade! Late June: Changes to the Duckfeed Patreon will take effect. July 1: Early Release shifts to 1 week early instead of 1 day early. July 9: Bonfireside Chat Victory Lap season begins. August 1: Watch Out for Fireballs! schedule change takes effect. August 20: Final Bonfireside Chat airs. Bonfireside Chat is Ending It’s strange to begin an announcement about Watch Out for Fireballs! with news for a different show, but the fate of Bonfireside Chat affects everything on the network. We’ve thought about it long and hard, and we’ve decided to end Bonfireside Chat in August of 2017. Bonfireside Chat and the Dark Souls series have both been very good to us. We’ve met a ton of great people doing the show, built an audience, and made some great episodes. But the Dark Souls 3 season kind of broke us. It was the first time we had to spend so much time playing, examining, and talking about a game that we’re not crazy for. We knew the end of Bonfireside Chat would happen some day. As early as a year ago, FromSoft told us that the series was concluding. We entertained the notion of continuing the show by talking about SoulsLikes, but those are of wildly varying quality. And all of our thoughts come back to this: Dark Souls was a game that was so good that we couldn’t *not** do a show about it.* Most of the sequels were as well. But it makes no sense to bind ourself to things that merely imitate something that we love. What if From releases a new SoulsBorne game? E3 is in a few weeks, and it’s totally possible that From will announce something related to Souls. This won’t change our decision. Instead, that game will be covered on Watch Out for Fireballs! The same applies to any really good SoulsLikes. How is Bonfireside Chat going to end? We have a plan for ending Bonfireside Chat, and we’ve alluded to it before. This summer, we’re walking back through the whole series in the opposite order that we’ve covered it. Each game will get an episode + appendix pair, and we’re going to talk about each entry in the broader context of the series now that we know how it ends. So that means the order is as follows: * Bloodborne (July 2) * Dark Souls 2 (July 16) * Demon’s Souls (July 30) * Dark Souls (August 13) These episodes will have guests, and they’re already chosen from our Bonfireside Chat After Dark tier backers. They are John Hurst, Mitch Benes, Randy Walker, and Kilo Pascal. Prior to that, we’re going to cover the remaining soulslikes we’ve committed to covering. Namely, Let It Die, Nioh, and Hollow Knight. You’ll notice that this brings the entire podcast around full circle. We like how appropriate that feels. What Happened to Bonfireside Chat After Dark? We miscalculated when we added Bonfireside Chat After Dark to the Patreon. We had no idea what would happen with the series or the show when we thought that up. We’ll own that mistake, and we also want to make it right… and here’s how. Those backers who would have been guests on Bonfireside Chat After Dark will instead guest on those final revisit episodes. It feels right to get people from the community involved in the victory lap, especially if they are people who have supported us as much as those individuals have. We’ve spoken with them, and they’re cool with it. If you paid for a prompt or question on Bonfireside Chat After Dark, we will use your responses during those recap appendices. Please look for a message in your email inbox toward the beginning of June. What’s Replacing Bonfireside Chat? We’ve gotten a lot of suggestions about what to cover after Bonfireside Chat ends. People were pulling hard for games like the Witcher and Nier. We seriously kicked around the idea of starting up a show that chronologically examined the Resident Evil games. The Crystal Chronicles was on our Patreon milestone goals for a very long time (more on that later). Starting up a new show about a new series of games makes less sense than making big changes to Watch Out for Fireballs!, which has always been our flagship show. What happens if we broaden that umbrella, and make changes to the schedule to allow us to cover more games in greater depth? What’s it look like if the Witcher 3 becomes a game we could cover on WOFF!? You end up with something we’ve codenamed WOFF! 2.0. But we likely won’t use that name in the future. Watch Out for Fireballs! is Going Weekly WOFF becoming more frequent is a huge deal for us. And here’s what it looks like. The first 3 weeks of each month (or the first 4, if it’s a 5 week month) will feature full episodes about short or medium length games, or episodes about portions of larger games (like we’ve done with large games in the past). The last episode of each month will be a collective listener response episode about all of the games we covered that month. This kind of grouping will also let us do themed batches of episodes each month. Hypothetically, this is what “Weird NES Sequels” month would look like. Week 1: Super Mario Bros. 2 Week 2: Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest Week 3: Zelda II: The Adventures of Link Week 4: Feedback episode about all three of the previous games. Other ideas for themed groups of episodes would be a long look at the Wolfenstein series, going from Wolfenstein 3D to the 2008 reboot to Wolfenstein: The New Order. We could also do a Resident Evil cleanup month, with Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, Code: Veronica, and Resident Evil 6. We aren’t promising that either of those will happen right away, but they’re examples. If this sounds familiar, it’s similar to how we’ve treated JRPGs and CRPGs in the past. The Neverwinter Nights II series of episodes was a test model for this, and we think those episodes turned out very well. Looking at the math, our old “tick tock” model of release would usually result in 26 episodes per year. Our multi-part episodes have made us come out with slightly more than that (for example, we released 30 episodes in 2016). Under the new model, you would get 40 mainline episodes per year. Here are a few things that will happen as a result of this: * We will cover more “small” games. The Pac Man 2 episode in the Duck Bundle was a test for how this would work. * Split episodes will go away (namely, single episodes that feature two games, like the Starflight/Toe Jam & Earl episode, or the Brawler special). * We’ll be a little more liberal about splitting meaty games into multiple parts (example: Metal Gear Solid 2 is on our docket, and we’re splitting that 12 hour game in 2 because we will have a lot to say). * We’ll have to be more comfortable with some episodes being “only” 60-90 minutes, as we cover some shorter stuff. Two things that won’t go away are poll episodes and executive produced episodes. Those will be folded into the model, and remain unchanged. That means one of those will happen each quarter (or four times per year). Another consequence is that listener response episodes will be much meatier since they’ll cover 3 or 4 games, and there will be a more consistent deadline… namely, responses about all of the games should come in by the 15th of each month. WOFF! Will Change Schedules in August The changes to the WOFF! schedule will begin August 3, with Final Fantasy IV month. That’s right, we’ll be covering all of Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. For reference, here’s the schedule up through that point: Crimson Shroud (May 11) Pilotwings (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pilotwings) (May 25) Yakuza (June 1) SSX Tricky (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSX_Tricky) (June 15) NOX(June 29) Metal Gear Solid 2, Part 1 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Gear_Solid_2:_Sons_of_Liberty) (July 13) Metal Gear Solid 2, Part 2 (July 20) Final Fantasy IV, Part 1 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_IV) (August 3) Final Fantasy IV, Part 2 (August 10) The After Years, Part 1 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_IV:_The_After_Years) (August 17) The After Years, Part 2 (August 24) Final Fantasy IV Responses (August 31) What’s Happening to the Crystal Chronicles? You may wonder what us covering FF4 on WOFF! means for the Final Fantasy show we had planned. It means that show won’t happen. We pegged that show at a very high milestone amount because it would take a tremendous amount of work. But as Bonfireside Chat wound down, we realized we probably wouldn’t hit that total any time soon. And redesigning WOFF! presented an opportunity to cover the Final Fantasy games that were meaningful to us without taking on an unreasonable workload that would harm the rest of the shows. In general, we want to be very circumspect about adding new shows, so we’re going to make some changes to the Patreon campaign to reflect that. Expect more details later. Of note: Heartbeat City will not go away. Gary will record and release a pilot for that soon. What’s Happening to Other Shows on the Network? This change shouldn’t have a huge impact on other shows, but there are some things we’d like to announce/clarify so people know what’s up. Gary is taking a leave of absence from Check It Out, Comrade!, the network’s indie game show. Brayton Cameron from Teenage Dirtbags will be replacing him. Gary made this decision to free up more time for working on his book, and playing things for the new iteration of WOFF! We’re really excited to have Brayton take over his seat. Brayton is hilarious, and has different taste in games than Gary does, so you will see them cover different stuff. Gary will still come back for specific games (think Thimbleweed Park or Torment: Tides of Numenera). File Under Water has an end date. Right now, it’s slated to end in late October. A show about R.E.M. was always going to be limited, because they only put out a limited number of albums. We currently have no plans to cover another band. Radio Free Mid-World is a limited show as well. Once we run out of Dark Tower books, related works by King, and related media (the movies, TV show, whatever else comes) we will end that show. Don’t worry, this won’t happen until 2019 at the earliest. How is the Patreon Changing? We’re making some adjustments to the way our Patreon works, in order to reflect these changes to our show lineup. Chiefly (and logically), we’re getting rid of the $75 BSC Afterdark tier, and removing the “get a prompt on BSC Afterdark” from the $10 tier. We are also removing The Crystal Chronicles as a milestone goal. Both of these will be replaced by something else in due time… Look a little further down to see what we’re thinking of (and to see how you can help). We’re also making two other big changes. Early Release is getting better. Effective around the end of June and the beginning of July, episodes on the Early Release feed will come out a week early, instead of a day early. We are also raising the price of this perk to $5 per month. This is more valuable, we think, and it brings us closer in line with other Patreon campaigns that offer a similar perk. We’re going to make a great deal of these changes in the middle of June, and the “1 Week Early” change will happen for any episode that would have normally come out in July. The only show this doesn’t apply to right now is The Level, which will come out 1-2 days early because of how that show is produced. We’re changing the Slack access tier. Effective sometime in June, Slack invites will only go to backers at $5 and up. If you already have access to the Slack team, or access the Slack team before the change is made, then you will be grandfathered in. We will not revoke Slack access from people. We’re doing this for a couple of reasons. The community is getting very big, and it’s requiring more work and more touch than it did in the past. This will help control that. Additionally, it will reduce the number of drive-bys that happen, as $5 is a bigger investment. Something to note is that the $1 tier will not go away. Those small donation amounts are huge for us. You will still get access to incidental content, and access to Watch Out for Fireballs! polls. What are some open questions? Everything laid out before this paragraph is a decision we’ve already made. We feel like they are good decisions, and we wouldn’t shake things up so much if we didn’t feel so secure in how things are going. But each big decision is accompanied by multiple smaller decisions. And that’s why we’re running this survey… to gather useful information from you, and to hear your thoughts and ideas about how the network can get better at giving you things you want. Here are some questions that have gone unanswered, and we want your help. What’s a good replacement for the $75 tier? That’s a lot of money to give, and we want to make it awesome. Would you want to guest on an episode? Dictate a piece of media for a Try This type show? Dictate the subject of some video content like Let’s Plays? What kind of new milestones goals would you like to see? Should we do another live show each year? Should we hold a virtual DuckCon? Include more guest episodes on WOFF!? Do one-off milestones interest you? Not every milestone needs to be an ongoing commitment. Maybe we could do some actual-play tabletop one-offs. Maybe we could set a goal for Gary and Kole to stream some co-op games. And there are other questions we haven’t even thought to ask. We want to know what would make you a patron if you aren’t one already. We want to know what stuff we do that you care about, and we also want to know what you don’t care about. We’d also like to hear how you feel about the changes to our biggest shows. We’ve already made our decision about ending Bonfireside Chat, but it’s worth understanding how this will impact your listenership and patronage. Something we don’t want to hear is “Stick to Games” or “Stop mentioning politics.” We also don’t want to hear “Be more positive.” Save yourself the time and hassle if that’s what you were going to say. We’re holding a survey. After this novella of a post, we want to know what you think. Use the button below to fill out the survey. It will be a huge help to us. Completing the survey and selecting “Yes, I would like to enter the contest” will enter you for a chance to win a $20 Steam gift card (we are giving out three of them). We are especially interested in your responses if you’re not already a Patron of Duckfeed.tv on Patreon. A link to the survey: https://duckfeed.typeform.com/to/LDPTnY Thank you so much for reading this, if you’ve gotten this far. Your support has meant the world to us, and we are incredibly excited about what these changes mean for the network. Thanks for being along for the ride.

This week, we continue with our Spotlight on Nobuo Uematsu. Enjoy! PART II Last week we looked at the beginnings of Nobuo Uematsu’s career, from being hired at Square Co. to his first two masterpieces that we can agree on with his soundtracks of FF4 and FF6. As a reminder, this is a special kind of Spotlight, one where you sit back, and enjoy the music. Let’s continue from 1995. Chrono Trigger, the one fucking game that we need to play but can’t because of the official order of things, was a gigantic project for Square, and is often cited with FF6 as the greatest RPG game ever. Most of the music was composed by veteran composer Yasunori Mitsuda, but Nobuo would leave his mark on the classic game as well, composing 8 of the tracks for the game. Here’s the haunting theme “Silent Light”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9T4WB2zfmps No, no no no. Silent LIGHT. Not Silent night… Jesus.. That was Josef Mohr. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ccv48ZiX1I&index=10&list=PLTHOcnhIuPOvEJd8WJI6kaJbQG0NeKtaY 1996 would be kind-of a dud year for Uematsu. The little known game “Dynami Tracer” would be his only solo work in 1996, and it’s definitely not one of his better soundtracks… But we wouldn’t wanna keep you wanting! Here’s a little piece called...music factory. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-T4JU01UoA&list=PL70567EDAFF96BD39&index=3 We’re not gonna even bother with his next work, contributing to the album for Front Mission: Gun Hazard with a half a billion of other Square composers. His next game was 1997’s fucking Final Fantasy 7. We can’t give you just one. Here’s his band, the black mages’ version of perhaps the most popular FF7 song One Winged Angel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHzEaKFqboI One of the most beautiful pieces from the game, Aerith’s theme, taking a cue from Terra’s theme in the last game, here’s an orchestral version of that song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NU0TcnsLop8 We can’t forget Kaleb’s favorite. This is Cosmo Canyon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qBk58XDx5gY His next game would be that of FInal Fantasy 8. Nobuo has stated that with 8’s soundtrack, he worked hard to reflect the charcter’s emotions at certain parts of the game. It would be one of the more successful FF soundtracks with what is now as of 2016 the second-biggest video game music single ever, Faye Wong’s “Eyes on Me” selling over 500,000 copies. Now… Final Fantasy VIII… This is a tough one because neither of us really care for the soundtrack of FF8. There’s something about the tone of the instrumentation and the terrible engrish lyrics of “eyes on me” that leaves us with a bad taste in our mouths, but no one can deny the power of the opener, Liberi Fatali!!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4MMhY4RyxQ Eh, fuck it, we’ll give you “Eyes on Me”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANw53vQFJeM Along this stream of Final Fantasy games, the often-underappreciated Final Fantasy IX would follow. FF9 would take a departure from the previous games with the soundtrack offering a more medieval scottish highlands inspired milieu. Nobuo would do the entire 160 tracks on his own for this game. Here’s one of them, “The Place I’ll return to someday”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OK29BoxomE We can’t forget “Rose of May”... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKw3eJV6XFM Along with these classic pieces, Nobuo wrote yet another J-pop single to go with the game. This the greatest cover of “Melodies of Life” ever made: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wffHREGnTiA The same year as FF9, the year 2000, would be Nobuo’s first foray into feature films, where he would compose the main theme for the animated film “Ah! My Goddess: The Movie” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2VTbUCek8E The first FInal Fantasy game without a soundtrack composed entirely by Uematsu himself would be the PS2 smash hit…. You guessed it! Final Fantasy X. One would guess that he may have been a bit burned out from FF9. In the end Nobuo ended up composing 51 of the game’s 89 tracks, including the Joe favorite “To Zanarkand” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3eQuEm4R10 One of the most commonly performed songs by The Black Mages is the incredibly zany “Fight with Seymour” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87e5qQnVerI Can’t forget a Kaleb favorite, “Auron’s Theme”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaAhtI1_HU8 Oh, and one of the decent theme songs for a Final Fantasy, probably because it wasn’t awkwardly forced into the english language, here’s “Suteki Da Ne” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikunVjaG2hw Final Fantasy XI, despite the arguments between Kaleb and I on whether or not he composed the soundtrack for the game, was composed in large part by him. NOT THE EXPANSIONS, but the original release. Here’s one of his tracks, “Ronfaure”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZ-ZDsFUEP8 Another insanely cool track from FF11 from Uematsu is “Despair” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joxCId9SvAU ...And one of the best-ever FF songs, one that Joe actually likes. This is the epic “Distant Worlds”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzbzAXKCn-Q Between 2003 and 2004, Uematsu seems to have been put on the backburner a little big, scoring for minor games like Hanjuku Hero Tai 3D and Egg Monster Hero, and only contributing one track for Final Fantasy Tactics Advanced during that time… Here’s the Main Theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqGNeqc26go In 2004 Square veteran Hironobu Sakaguchi famously quit Square-Enix to create Mistwalker Studios, and in a way Nobuo left with him. Wanting to work on his live performances, his band the black mages, and seeking other opportunities creatively, Nobuo decided he was going to forge ahead as an independant contracter, and since that departure he’s returned to the FF series 3 times. For the soundtrack of Advent Children he built on his previous themes from FFVII, with FF12 he gave us another pop song I really don’t have the stomach for right now, and with FFXIV… Well, despite creating a lot of tracks for the original release, A Realm Reborn got rid of much of the original music from FF14. His biggest recent contribution to the FF series is probably the song “Answers” from the tragic end of the original game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMhcyzQ7mKw Nobuo Uematsu has gone on primarily to work with his old friend “The Gooch” on the games Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and The Last Story. All of which feature great soundtracks. Here’s one from Blue Dragon, titled Waterside https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAzwlwkcFaU And here’s another from his non-Square Work. Here’s the terrifying Howl of the Departed from Lost Odyssey: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmCp20CW-Pw Nobuo Uematsu's touch can be felt upon the whole series. Without him FInal Fantasy wouldn't be the same, and would be worse off for it. Nobuo Currently works hard at his live performances and various little composing projects for games and movies that he decides to work on. He’s doing so much, we can’t even cover it in a two-parter, but it seems he won’t be doing a full FF soundtrack anytime soon We are grateful to him and his work. What say we close with a gorgeous piece from “The Last Story” and close the book on our Spotlight of Nobuo Uematsu? This is “Lost Time”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agAlOe0PoxY

This week, we discuss Masayoshi Sokens history within Square Enix. Enjoy! Spotlight: Masayoshi Soken By Joseph DeGolyer Look, it’s hard to follow up after a huge success. To every first generation of Saturday night live hosts, there’s always a second generation. Like Irvine Kershner after George Lucas. Like Jason Newsted after Cliff Burton. Like Andrew Johnson after Abraham Lincoln. Like Commodus after Marcus Aurelius. Some, like Kershner, rise to meet the challenge. Others, like Andrew Johnson, do so terribly their effects sour generations. Even more are just forgotten with time. For Example, Can you name the musical composer for Final Fantasy 12? How about 13? For most of us, these names probably don’t pop so easily into our heads… (They are Hitoshi Sakimoto, Hayato Matsuo, Masaharu Iwata for FF12 and Masashi Hamauzu for 13 By the way---and yes, I did have to look those up.) How can you possibly follow a legend like Nobuo Uematsu? With 12 main series Final Fantasy games composed primarily by him. With pieces like “theme of Love” from FF4 being taught to schoolchildren in Japan, and having the second-highest selling video game single ever (Eyes on Me, yes I still hate it, although I won’t deny the accomplishment), how can someone possibly fill his shoes. You’ve heard the rumors… Is the next Uematsu here? HAS THE CHOSEN ONE ARRIVED? On that, who knows? But let’s talk about him anyway. This is our special Spotlight on Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn composer, Masayoshi Soken!!! ----------------------------small musical interlude---------------------------------- Masayoshi Soken was born on January 10th, 1975 in La Paz Mexico. His father was a Trumpet Player in the NHK Symphony Orchestra for many years, as well as a professor at the Okinawa Prefectural University of Art. Why was his pregnant mother in mexico at the time of Soken’s birth? Who knows! Because he went straight from Mexico to Tokyo, Japan. There he grew to love music, learn piano, learn the guitar, and get into the Tokyo University of Science. Now I’ve desperately been searching for what he got his degree in at University… There are departments there in Science, engineering, innovation studies, chemical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, management, fire science, math, technology, and biology…. Basically, no music or sound design school. Students are required to take some liberal arts stuff, according to the university’s website. I figured, for fun, I’ll list off their principles on liberal arts-supplemented education: “Leaders in science and technology are required to remain motivated to tackle, in cooperation with like minded people from different fields, cross-sectional and complex issues that transcend the borders of specialties, while maintaining a foothold in science and technology. We believe that cultivating such ability and supporting outstanding specialized skills are the role of liberal arts education. For this purpose, organizing a curriculum for liberal arts education should aim to cultivate the following types of ability. Ability to adopt a bird’s-eye perspective of nature, people, and society Ability to think logically and critically Communication skills Internationalism (ability to understand different cultures, languages, ethnic groups, and international issues) Self-management ability” ----------------------------small musical interlude------------------------------------- Whatever it was that he learned from University, be it Biology or his skill in “Internationalism”, he was able to get an interview at Square in 1998 to work in the sound department. Apparently, his enthusiasm for rock and roll is what got him the job, as well as his sick skills on the guitar. And he put that guitar skill to work with his first video game soundtrack credit for the game “Gekikuukan Pro Yakyuu At the End of the Century” in 1999. The game features his punk rock music tracks, as well as some of his sound design… Let’s take a listen to one of his first video game scores…. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zyj_AjLK7E8 Soken would continue to work on sports games for Square, until Square decided that they were done making them. Before that time, would compose tracks for the games Nichibeikan Pro Baseball: Final League and the soccer simulator World Fantasista… Here’s a bit of sound from that game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IphGvVxw9x8 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now, Soken stayed quiet after the Sports Team was dissolved at square. My only assumption was that he was just lurking in sound design for various games, and not given any more opportunities to compose any music until 2005. There is some confusion regarding his credits, as Soken often went by pseudonyms during this time. It is believed that he co-created the piece "Endless Love, Endless Road” with Masashi Hamauzu and Tsuyoshi Sekito from a Final Fantasy X Tribute Album called “Feel/Go Dream Yuna & Tidus”in 2001. I don’t see any proof of this anywhere, but if Wikipedia says it, you know it’s true!!!! I think it deserves a bit of a listen though, don’t you? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqID7jQwnLQ If you want more information on that album… It’s supposed to be songs about Tidus and Yuna… You can look up more if you want. His next piece that we know of was the beginning jingle for the show “Square-Enix music TV” where Square’s video game composers would be interviewed and promote their music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6hsXHXOEn8 On this front, in an attempt to promote himself, apparently he showed up at some kind of fan convention and fought some robots half-naked for Square-Enix players… Perhaps this paid off, he got to compose one spoof soundtrack for Front Mission 5 called “Blue Stream”... http://downloads.khinsider.com/game-soundtracks/album/front-mission-5-scars-of-the-war-original-soundtrack/321-blue-stream.mp3 And so his return to Composing was complete. He would next go on to do the entire soundtrack for the Square/Nintendo collaboration Mario 3 on 3. Here’s a taste of that... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehAZmNS6BPI&list=PLBBD787E4AD05D073 Now, as you can see, a lot of this stuff is more poppy in tone, and far from anything you’d hear in let’s say Final Fantasy 6, but I think that soken was just going pretty much where he was told. He contributed a remix for The Bouncer’s main theme, and he worked on Square-Enix’s web-based games Elebest, Game Brain, and Zenobuster. He was moving up the ladder. In 2007 he got the opportunity to play second fiddle to Kenji Ito on the score of Dawn of Mana in 2007. Here’s his biggest contribution to that game, a track called “Sanctuary”... Sit back and relax for this one... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDbxqrcxSkk Now, that’s more like it, am I right? Mr. Soken was still considered a mid-level composer in the company, and his next two projects “Nameless game” in 2008 would be a minor release on the DS, a Video Game adaptation of The Ring. The theme here, I think, shows that he can do more than pop, rock, and pretty piano pieces… He can create something epic... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_8YugTt-Bc&list=PLfSOLl6OGya6nIZomTmyNp7MZaPnkt2f1&index=2 The last major game he’d work on before Final Fantasy XIV would be the game “Mario Sports Mix” in 2010. I’ll play a bit of one of the pieces that showcases Soken’s punk rock style the most from this game… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqjH20atoNE&list=PL8827B3786F638845&index=5 So, at some point he got hired on to do the sound direction for the 1.0 version of Final Fantasy XIV after this (Which, considering how huge the series is, that is still a massively important job in its own right). Nobuo Uematsu was making a one-off return to the series after going solo, and his shoes wouldn’t need to be filled until 1.0’s massive failure. During the 1.0 to 2.0 debacle (you can listen to our FF14 review to learn all about that), Soken was given the double duty of directing the sound of both games. With no Uematsu, Soken had to fill in much of the soundtrack himself, eventually creating over 100 tracks for the new game, and later creating another 60 tracks for the Heavensward expansion. Let’s go through a few of his most popular tracks from FF14. We’ll be putting up piano remixes these pieces, as I think that that may be the best way to truly appreciate the musicality of Soken--check the description for the links and check out the channels. For the true Soken audio, consult the game, or buy the albums. This first one is called “Wailers and Waterwheels” arranged by Matt Fuss... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmZRCxdvSvU&list=PLBEaChoG50t4iyMscJ9mwMc0fCEK2MNh3 Here’s a pretty cool version of “Leviathan” from Husky By the Geek... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h37r9S0GdIs&index=13&list=PLpamuGhPkpi5sSydUiEYpP3FDpgeGdTP7 ...and we’ll play one more by the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra. This is “A New Hope”... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p97GPoQDXfc ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ For our closing statements on Masayoshi Soken, I’d like to say that I think he’s got incredible potential as far as his future work is concerned. Many FF14 players have gathered around his music in particular, praising it over Uematsu’s work on the same game. I think the Jury’s still out on this one, but I sense great things from Masayoshi Soken in the future. Let’s fade out with my favorite piece from Heavensward that I’ve heard so far… This is “Contention”. A remix by Benjamin Antony James… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-9WEwgevEg

Crimsoncommand I was recently playing FFIX with my brother and thought that it was really odd on how many child characters there were. Honestly, it seems that every child character besides Rydia and Vivi just diminishes the story. To me they are annoying. I'm wondering if anyone else feels this way or what your thoughts are about age and playable characters? Banedrom Long time listener, first time question asker. I started out on Final Fantasy VI with friends before graduating to the PS games. When Final Fantasy VIII came out, it was a graphical dream. Character design was getting more and more realistic. Then I saw the first new about Final Fantasy IX in video game magazines and was a bit disappointed. . Steiner with his frighteningly feminine eyes. And what was Quina anyways? Some see the character design of Final Fantasy IX as a hiccup in the more realistic design since Final Fantasy VIII. Was this a welcome vacation from reality or a disappointment for you guys? Shinru What were your favorite dungeons and bosses in the game? Which bosses and dungeons did you find the hardest? What are your thoughts on the final bosses and final dungeon area? What about the music for the final bosses, did you like it? Did you notice that the Kuja's last boss battle had Nobuo Uematsu get inspired by Black Sabbath's Iron Man song? Did you fight any of the secret bosses like the Tantarian, Hades or Ozma? Hehe Hades was a lot of fun to discover by accident in the final dungeon. Ozma is insane though. I enjoyed the trek through the final dungeon area, having to fight a certain amount of classic FF bosses up to the next checkpoint and I really liked the environments. Necron was insane the first time I fought him, that Grand Cross attack is scary with all those status ailments. I would grip my controller in fear every time he did that attack. A lot of people say Necron was random but he was hinted at a few times in the game if you read the writing on the dungeon walls talking about the god of death. The game does deal with the themes of life and rebirth and death so I never felt that it was weird to have Necron as a final boss. Plus FF9 was paying tribute to past FF games and we all know how FF3, FF4 and FF5 had random final bosses appear out of nowhere so it was trying to recreate that again. How did you guys do against him and what was your final party? Where you doing 9999 Damage with Steiner? Banedrom I know that this is a commonly debated concept from FFIX, but Kuja is a character that really pushes the gender roles. When I first played this game, I thought to myself that was a weird looking female character. Eventually, I was more and more confused as they dialogue indicated that Kuja was in fact a male character. What are your thoughts on Kuja as a "David Bowie as Goblin King - esque" androgynous villain? Void Final Fantasy IX is, in many ways, a throwback to the older Final Fantasy games. What did you think about the old school style and throwbacks in the game? Void The Active Time Events are a really cool way to get to know the characters in Final Fantasy IX. What did you guys think of them? Did you feel that they're an effective way of fleshing out characters? Void I love FFIX, it's my favorite Final Fantasy game. But my major complaint about the game is how slow the battle system is. Not only is the game slow to load into every battle, but a lot of time is spent waiting for ATB gauges to fill up or watching needlessly long attack animations. It is, by far, the thing I dislike most about Final Fantasy IX. So, two questions: Did the slowness of the battle system in FFIX drive you crazy by the end of the game? If that wasn't your biggest complaint about the game (and I don't know how it couldn't be) what is?
News: Final Fantasy XIV has some patch issues. Final Fantasy Record Keeper is announced, although we don't know anything about it. Discussion: This week we finally finished Final Fantasy IV!!!! We bring in a special guest to discuss various versions of the game, what we thought of the story, gameplay, and music, and our thoughts on Final Fantasy IV as a whole. Often regarded as Final Fantasy II in the west we go through the entire developement process and fawn over this classic RPG.
Greetings everyone and welcome back once again to Final Fantasy Union! The time has come for the trio, Darryl, Lauren, and Spencer, to come together and discuss all things Final Fantasy. This show brings some crazy and fun discussions that you’re sure to enjoy! The show starts off with a real bang as the gang sits down and talks, in depth, about the recent press release from Square Enix admitting to losing focus in the way they develop and release their games. There is a veritable ton of ranting, discussion, and tangents. With any luck, the FF that we once new may be returning! After this hefty segment, next up is the news. Listen in as the hosts talk about Sony dumping their SE stock shares, the new Theatrhythm game having a TON of songs from all the different FF titles (not just the games; the movies too), FF14 surpassing 2 million users, and FF15/KH3 being rumored to make an E3 appearance. There is certainly a lot to get through so hang on tight. Next on the agenda are your responses to the Burning Question which was “Which did you spend more time playing: Lightning Returns or FF10/10-2 HD?” You guys were pretty much all on the same side on this one; you’ll have to listen to hear which side it is. And following your answers are your questions for the gang. This time, they discuss issues like their thoughts on FF4 and what one hero/villain in any FF game would they change if they could. The music segment rounds out the show as usual with a really fun remix from Crisis Core. E3 is almost here and we’ll be here to let you know all the details as they come in!
