As I've been trying to wrap up this season of the podcast, I've been reflecting, in particular on my conversations about psychiatric diagnosis with Dr. Awais Aftab and Dr. Miri Forbes.I keep coming back to this question: How do we decide what human traits, behaviors, and subjective experiences to pathologize? What makes something about a person a problem that we try to fix? It's a deeply complicated question, with few, if any, absolute answers. Yet I still think we have to wander that hall of mirrors, and I believe that how we conceptualize and approach the question is actually more important than any conclusions we might make.Because when we are able to articulate the various factors that influence what we pathologize and when, we actually increase our ability to apply those factors across contexts without needing to have an ultimate conclusion that is true for all people, in all contexts, at all times.Listen to the full episode to hear:How even using suffering as a metric for a problematic trait is often complicated by contextWhy we cannot discount the sociocultural context for an individual's expression of traitsWhy pathologizing states as problematic across the board falls apart in real lifeHow the medical model of optimal human functioning fails to translate to psychopathologyWhy we have to stay open to uncertainty in viewing our clients' suffering and how we can help ease itLearn more about Riva Stoudt:Into the Woods CounselingThe Kiln SchoolInstagram: @atherapistcantsaythatResources:Season 3 Ep 9: Epistemic Justice in Diagnosis: Exploring Borderline Personality Disorder with Dr. Awais AftabSeason 3 Ep 10: What We Talk About When We Talk About DiagnosisSeason 3 Ep 11: Redefining Psychiatric Constructs with Dr. Miri ForbesEffective Reaction to Danger: Attachment Insecurities Predict Behavioral Reactions to an Experimentally Induced Threat Above and Beyond General Personality Traits, Tsachi Ein-Dor, Mario Mikulincer, and Phillip R. John Charles in conversation with John Copenhaver
When a popular mystery novelist dies suspiciously, his writing partner must untangle the author's connection to a serial killer in award-winning John Copenhaver's new novel set in 1950s McCarthy-era Washington, DC.In May 1954, Lionel Kane witnesses his apartment engulfed in flames with his lover and writing partner, Roger Raymond, inside. Police declare it a suicide due to gas ignition, but Lionel refuses to believe Roger was suicidal.A month earlier, Judy Nightingale and Philippa Watson—the tenacious and troubled heroines from The Savage Kind—attend a lecture by Roger and, being eager fans, befriend him. He has just been fired from his day job at the State Department, another victim of the Lavender Scare, an anti-gay crusade led by figures like Senator Joseph McCarthy and J. Edgar Hoover, claiming homosexuals are security risks. Little do Judy and Philippa know, but their obsessive manhunt of the past several years has fueled the flames of his dismissal. They have been tracking their old enemy Adrian Bogdan, a spy and vicious serial killer protected by powerful forces in the government. He's on the rampage again, and the police are ignoring his crimes. Frustrated, they send their research to the media and their favorite mystery writer anonymously, hoping to inspire someone, somehow, to publish on the crimes—anything to draw Bogdan out. But has their persistence brought deadly forces to the writing team behind their most beloved books? In the wake of Roger's death, Lionel searches for clues, but Judy and Philippa threaten his quest, concealing dark secrets of their own. As the crimes of the past and present converge, danger mounts, and the characters race to uncover the truth, even if it means bending their moral boundaries to stop a killer.Amazon.com: Hall of Mirrors: A Novel (A Judy Nightingale and Philippa Watson Mystery): 9781639366507: Copenhaver, John: BooksSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Once again I'm talking about AI. There's been yet more news about the disaster that is BingAI so I discuss some of the issues I discovered, as well what other folks have been focusing on... And why that's the wrong thing to focus on. I also get a little into why we need to be more critical about technological development.

This is the forty-second and final installment in Eric Ludy's epic summer Daily Thunder series entitled Spiritual Lessons from WW1. This concluding episode wraps up the epic drama of WW1 in the Hall of Mirrors in the palace of Versailles. In June of 1919, exactly five years after Gavrilo Princip shot the Archduke of Austria-Hungary, the peace treaty was signed by all the belligerent countries and “peace” ensued. But it was a temporary peace, because it was a peace based upon brute force and revenge and not one derived from genuine agreement. This very misconceived treaty became the seedbed for Adolf Hitler and the Second World War in 1939. On this edition of Parallax Views, journalist Aaron Lake Smith joins Parallax Views to discuss his 2018 Harper's Magazine article detailing his trip to the Russian separatist breakaway republics in the Donbass entitled "Light in the Donbass Window". We discuss the pro-Russian Luhansk People's Republic and Donetsk People's Republic seeking to break away from Ukraine and the strange mix of supporters and foreign volunteers this has brought to Donbass including tankies (leftist who oppose American imperialism and NATO to the point of supporting China's Xi, Russia's Putin, Chechnya's Kadyrov, etc.), Nazbols (National Bolsheviks, a performance art prank created by Eduard Liminov that has since turned into an ideology/movement), Duginists (adherents to the Eurasianist philosophy of Aleksander Dugin), and others. Reporting on the "International Fascist Conference" in the Donbass, Aaron met a wide variety of individuals who supported the People's Republics of Donetsk and Luhansk. But he quickly began to consider that these various individuals were caught in the cross-hairs of a spy-vs-spy style hall-of-mirrors world. In other words, a seeming proxy war between Russian and NATO. Aaron also details the rotating cast of characters in the two People's Republics' leadership positions as well as the deaths and mysterious disappearances of many in the middle of this strange saga. It's a story of information warfare, cloak-and-dagger intrigues, and tankies. In the second segment of the show, Mickey Huff of the long-running media watchdog non-profit Project Censored joined me to discuss Project Censored's State of the Free Press 2022 (edited by Mickey Huff and Andy Lee Roth). We discuss the problems facing news media today including junk food news, "humilitainment", the problems of corporate media, state-run media, censorship, how the stories for State of the Free Press are collated each year, Palestinian activists and the Canary Mission, free speech, and much, much more!
Tahiry, otherwise known as TK Devine, reflects on her take on her dark night of the soul experience. Deeply embedded into the fabric of church, yet having rebellion destined within her blood, TK speaks about the likenesses she sees in others and herself, and about how she takes responsibility for her life through her response to the external stimulation. Billions of people worldwide are trying to track the truth. And yet we are living in a hall of mirrors. Whether it's admonitions to “trust the experts” or headlines that read “Science says…” it's too easy to forget that human beings have epistemic limits. We are all trapped in our subjective selves. We come with biases. And in our search for truth we sometimes have to appeal to authorities who are just as human as we are. In this brave new world of narrative warfare, we must reckon with the fact that tracking the truth (nevermind arriving at collective intelligence) is a tough, dirty business. In this episode, we seek the wisdom to know our limitations and the courage to track the truth despite them.
Science fiction is a genre encompassing imaginative works that take place in this world or that of the author's creation where anything is possible. The only rules are those set forth by the author. The speculative nature of the genre inspires thought and plants seeds that have led to advances in science. The genre can spark an interest in the sciences and is cited as the impetus for the career choice of many scientists. It is a playing field to explore social perspectives, predictions of the future, and engage in adventures unbound into the richness of the human mind. - Summary by Amy Gramour Genre(s): Fantastic Fiction, Science Fiction, Short Stories Language: English Group: Short Science Fiction Collections Get Audible: https://amzn.to/3fZZT4p Crypto Opportunities: https://bit.ly/3bB2yAu Grow your Social Following: https://bit.ly/3wJi70U ManySwap: https://bit.ly/3yGUVSP --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/freeaudiobooks/support
LET'S GET SOMETHING CLEAR:The demons in this little universe thingie have it much worse than us, okay? Literally existence itself hurts them. Don't take your ambient sadness and be like, oh, hey, Mr. Pantheon guy wrote a story about suicidal demons, so I should commit suicide by blowing up the world. Nah nah nah nah. You're sad 'cause we humans are stupid, and have messed the world up by worshipping selfishness. Help in fixing that, you'll feel good. I know 'cause I'm also a person, believe it or not, and I know how to really feel good in this man wrought hell. And also in general, too : )Anyways, I have a real perverse sense of fun, but then don't we all? It's so much better to endorse that in make believe stories then in harming the real flesh and blood people of this universe, isn't it?
